Why can't I play songs on my iPod using iTunes?

This is probably a simply question and one asked many times. When I attach my iPod, iTunes starts, however, when I click on my iPod icon and Music, all of the songs are 'greyed out' and I'm unable to play them. Is this the norm? and, if not, what can be done to enable playback? Thanks for your help.

i have a similar problem which i need all your help! just bought a new classic to replace my nano. i have so far loaded approx 3000 songs on to it without a problem, but the songs won't play on the computer - they all show up in the library and any new cd's that i copy are all shown in the library and copy to the ipod and play ok, it's just that none of the songs will play on the computer, when i click on them an explanation mark appeard on the left of the song and a pop up tells me that "song couldnt play because original file couldnot be found, would i like to locate it" - course i would but i can't!! i'm a complete novice at all this and would appreciate any help from you experts.

  • Updated to iTunes 7 and can no longer play music off my iPod through iTunes

    The title says it all. I can no longer play music from my iPod through iTunes now that I have upgraded. When I click on my iPod there is a little black lock beside where it shows the disk usage.
    anyone have any ideas. I like some of the new features of this version of iTunes but it really seems to be a few steps backwards.

    That little lock usually indicates that the iPod is set to autosync. In order to play iPod content through iTunes, you have to be on manual sync.

    Im trying to play my the songs on my iPod with itunes that I just installed on my friends laptop. The problem is, the place where it says Charles's (me) Laptop, the songs are all grayed out and I cant select any of them.

    Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to "automatically update songs and playlists". If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and Playlists" in the iPod preferences.     The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):

If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

    Neither Lion (10.7) or Mountain Lion (10.8) support anything that was written for PowerPC's. Rosetta, which enabled the functionality has been dropped.
    You will either need to update or replace the games or consider creating a partition on your drive with Snow Leopard installed and booting into that to run your games.

    I had an issue with songs being present on my iPod, yet the artists would not appear under "Artists". So I turned off "Group by Album Artist" in Settings and the problem was solved.     What happens when you try to sync tracks to it via iTunes? Any error messages?  Does the iPod still appear under Devices in the left hand pane of iTunes when you connect it via USB?
    How is your iPod configured to sync with your library? In other words, what options and settings do you have in place from under the iPod's Summary and Music configuration tabs in iTunes?

    Try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync.     If you haven't already tried, you have to plug your iPod into the computer and open iTunes. Then it can get confusing, but when you're in iTunes you have click on your device and then sync your music. This will take all the music already in your iTunes library and put it on your iPod. It will also take all the purchased music on your iPod and move it to iTunes.
    However, if you have downloaded songs from cds or anyother program, they will not sync into iTunes and will be deleted from your iPod. But this will only happen if they are not already in iTunes. You also need to be careful of one other thing when you are syncing your iPod. The iTunes library already comes with a default of songs that apple provides you with, and these may also sync onto your iPod if you're not careful. I know because I had to do the same thing with my iPod and all this happened to me.

    I have a 32 GB iPod Touch. I've had it for almost two years now, and so far there haven't been any major problems with it. I got it wet once, and the screen crashed when I dropped it, but it always responded like it'd just come from the Apple Store. Lately, I've had problems syncing songs to it. I have 659 songs in my iTunes library. All of them have a checkmark on the left side.
    When I checked my iPod after the latest sync, there were only 650 songs. I'm thinking this might be because I deleted them from my iPod, but in the sync settings I have it set to "Sync all songs from the library". Shouldn't this re-sync the songs to my iPod? And I'd have to delete them all over again? Thanks.

  • I can't transfer some songs to my ipod from itunes

    I subscribe to itunes match. When highlighting certain songs in itunes where a cloud symbol has appeared next to them, I get the following message: "the song................could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" If I press the locate button it takes me to a windows file search screen (giving me no clues as what to do next), but if I cancel it finds the song and an arrow appears at the base of the cloud symbol next to it. If I click the symbol now it eventually disappears and the problem seems resolved. ie it plays when highlighted and can be dragged and dropped onto my ipod. On other songs the cloud symbol appears next to them but with an exclamation mark in it and "Error" in the icloud status column (Whereas "matched" appears next to the others). I get the same message as before and if I cancel the song is found. The difference is that when I now click on the cloud symbol, I get the message "The item was not added to the iCloud as an error occurred", the exclamation mark reappears, "error" remains in the icloud status column and the song will not drag onto my ipod. I can't find a way round this.
    I manually manage my music and am preparing to revert to syncing my ipod . I have many playlists in itunes and looking through them there is a scattering of these cloud symbols throughout against random songs. The clear symbols I can alter as above (though it will take ages) but I don't think I will be able to sync the ones with the - ! - mark in the cloud symbol next to them. I have in excess of 10,000 songs - 99.9% from my cd collection.
    This is very frustrating especially as these songs I have manually stored on my computer from my cds but iTunes match appears to be denying me access to a significant amount of them. Any help would be appreciated.
