Why can't I read books on my mac computer?

I have the latest iTunes and automatic download enabled. If I buy a book or an audio book I want to be able to read it on my computer and not just my phone

So far Apple haven't made a Mac (nor PC) reader for them, so currently they can only be read in the iBooks app on an iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch - whether they will make a Mac version in the future nobody on here will know.
If you want to be able to read ebooks on your Mac then you could consider one of the other ebook readers/stores e.g. Amazon have a Mac version of their Kindle reader (though you won't be able to read ibooks in it)

  • Why can't I read iBooks on my Mac?

The user unfriendly way of selling ebooks is very disapointing!
I can not read them on my computer, only on my iPad.
I can not lend them to my daughter, as I would do with any other form of book.
no way I am going to buy anymore books this way!

Because Apple has chosen not to make iBooks readable on the Mac.  As fellow users, we cannot speculate on why they have decided this.
However, you can still read books on your Mac.  The best approach is to download the Kindle app for Mac.  Then you can buy electronic books from Amazon, and read them on your Mac (or iPad).

  • Why can't I read books purchased from itunes on my macbook pro?

I find it very upsetting that books purchased from itunes on a Macbook pro can not be read on a Macbook Pro.

Many MacBook Pro users are professional authors, reseachers, teachers, ... and we need to manage large libraries of copy protected digital material (journals, book collections, protected imagery, ...) , which we directly reference and include (with citations) in our writing and analyses.
Laptops and desktops are the only viable options in terms of screen real estate (multiple monitors needed), application availability (image analytics, serious statistics, real 2D and 3D modeling, ...) high speed storage attachment (the cloud can't handle many needs) and processing horse power. iPads and iPhones are a few generations away from being adequate for many such activities, which Apple had traditionally supported.
This particular oversight by the  folks behind the Apple iTunes bookstore business, stands in stark contrast to what used to be our vision of the premier professional creative platfom. I find this deeply dissappointing and inconsiderate of our long term investment in apple technologies.
Asking folks to simply abandon their investment in copy protected ebook material, purchased on iTunes, is just wrong.

  • Why Can I not read my iBooks on my computer?

I've joined this simply to ask this quesiton and i am beyond annoyed at the fact that i cannot read any of my ibooks on anything but my iPod which i've dropped and smashed. I wish to continue to read them on the computer and cannot.

It is possible to read some ebooks without an iOS device -- those in the epub format which do not have DRM.  Usually free books are like that, and some publishers of paid books (like O'Reilly) also omit DRM.  Apps like Adobe Digital Editions and Calibre can be used for ebooks in this category.

Apple have not created a Mac or PC program that can be used to read them - currently you need the iBooks app, and therefore an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch

  • Why can't I read my book in Reader like I bought it?????

It's been awhile since I used one of my eBooks but every time I double-click it brings me to a web-site to install DE. Even after installing it still takes me to DE. Even when I'm in DE the experience is less than pleasurable. Why can't I read it how I want to? I hate DRM!!!!! Way to kill enthusiasm for eBooks Adobe! Guess I'll have to repurchase a paper version.
Who programmed this piece of crap anyway? Why can't I simply hold my down arrow to scroll the document like every other application in existence? Why does clicking above or below the thumb in the scrollbar not page up or page down like every other application in existence????? Why do I have to bring up some weird little window to zoom to anything other than a predefined width??? I am completely infuriated that I cannot read my book in the format I purchased it!
Having it in Reader was so cool. I could double-click on the file and pick up reading where I left off. It almost felt like a book. Now it feels like locked digital content that I have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get to and that may or may not be there for me when I need it. Way to go idiots!

With Adobe Acrobat 8.0, Adobe Reader 8.0 and the Digital Editions software, Adobe has really crippled the PDF reader. I supposed, eventually Adobe will address this issue, but here's what you can do now to get the functionality back:
If you installed or upgraded to Adobe Acrobat 8.0 or Adobe Reader 8.0, uninstall the software and go back to Adobe Acrobat 7.0 or Adobe Reader 7.0. You can still download this version of Adobe Reader from Adobe's website.
Uninstall the Digital Editions software completely from your computer.
Go into Adobe Acrobat 7.0 or Adobe Reader 7.0 and disable the feature that automatically updates the software (to prevent your software from being upgraded to 8.0 without your knowledge):
Edit > Preferences > Updates > select the option "Do not automatically check for critical updates"
Change the file association for PDF files back to Adobe Reader 7.0 (or Adobe Acrobat 7.0): open up File Explorer > select Tools > Folder Options > File Types > find and highlight the PDF file type > select the "Change" button and select Adobe Reader 7.0 or Adobe Acrobat 7.0.
This won't fix the books you've already opened in the Digital Editions software, but now when you download DRM protected PDF files, you can use them as you are accustomed to.

  • Why can't I read a book purchased through iPhone ibook app on my MacBook Pro?

Why can't I read a book purchased through iPhone ibook app on my MacBook Pro? Also, is there any way to print pages from book?

In general if you want to read paid-for ebooks on your Mac, you need to buy them from one of the other sources like Kindle, Nook, Kobo, or Googlebooks and use the free OS X and iOS reader apps which they provide instead of iBooks.

To read a book on your computer, get the Kindle app for PC, and download the book you want from the Kindle Store.

  • Why can't I get Back To My Mac to work in both directions between my 2011 Mac Book Air and my 2012 Mac Mini?

Why can't I get Back To My Mac to work in both directions between my 2011 Mac Book Air and my 2012 Mac Mini? The network uses a Time Capsule. Everything works when connecting from the Mini to the Air, but the reverse is not the case, none of the Mini's drives are visible, and the screen sharing option is not available. I've tried the measures already suggested in online articles, everything seems to be configured correctly using my iCloud account. I'm at a loss, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've now managed to get the service running in both directions, but not in the way I had anticipated. I had to create a second account on the Mac Book Air, this also has administrator privilages, everything works fine when connecting from this acccount. However, this is not the way I would expect to work, none of my documents, applications and settings would be available, unless I laboriously duplicated them to the new account.
Also, I've yet to get the service running from outside my home network.

  • Why can't I delete books from iBooks/iCloud?

    Why can't I delete books from iBooks/iCloud?

What happens when you try to delete them from the iBooks app on your Mac ? If they are downloaded into the app (i.e. they don't have the cloud symbol on them) then you should be able to select them and then press the delete button on your keyboard to delete them.
In terms of the cloud, you can't permanently delete any item from your purchase history, all you can do is hide them so that they don't show for redownloading, which you can either do via your computer's iTunes : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919
Or for the iBooks app you can go into the Store in the app, and on the Featured tab select the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the screen and hide them (hover your mouse pointer on a book and it should get an 'x' on its top left corner, click that to hide the book).
