Can't compose, reply or send mail - but can receive

My software is up to date and I can receive mail, but I select reply and it usually would bring up a new mail window and won't or I try to compose a new email and my mail won't let me even type past the third letter or send/forward/reply to anything.
Worked yesterday fine - the only thing I did was delete some fonts, but replaced them and restarted and mail still won't work - but I can receive and all of my other programs are uneffected.

This problem in Mail is usually caused by some Launch Services cache or preferences corruption that affects the built-in spell checker. If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, take a look at this other article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures. The most appropriate utility for this particular problem probably is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:

As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
1. Quit all applications.
2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
3. Go to Maintenance > Reset and check LaunchServices database.
4. Un-check any other pre-checked options.

Forgive the comment if it offends any poster but - this problem persists in dozens (if not more) threads and Forums and is clearly an iPhone problem. My Nokia (using a non Nokia email) and my BlackBerry (ditto) has never had this problem. Sadly, in my case, it appears to be a random rejection of emails sent via the iPhone - which is intensely frustrating as one can never be sure the email has gone - until the error message pops up again. And yes, I have done all that the threads on this Forum suggest, and yet the problem remains. I feel that Apple should get the grips with this and offer a proper fix (and set of instructions) so that it can indeed be fixed! Ho hum...

I understood from your help file that synchronization is compatible only with IMAP mail provider
I can receive and send mails from TB , but when making action on TB (Del or send) no reflection on main server, same when make the action on the main server (Del or send), no change on TB
from yahoo help I managed to find configuration for IMAP , but could not apply them on TB , as TB have already Yahoo as POP in the configuration list
please your help on this

You cannot convert an existing account, but you can set up your Yahoo account as IMAP in parallel to the existing POP account. See

This box has always been ticked and in the past no copies remained on server, now for no reason I can find the copies are put in the trash folder on the server and have to be manually removed.
Maybe your isp changed what "delete from server" means and that's what they do now. I would check with your ISP before blaming a mail program local to your machine.
If you want to try a "controlled experiment", set up another mail program, e.g., Thunderbird, and send a message to yourself. See if the message is treated the same way. Note, Thunderbird, like most (all?) mail programs also has an option to delete messages from the server.

I have Aperture3 and iPhoto. When I try send video clips as attachments, I get a message saying Quicktime can't open the .avi - why? Others couldn't open them so I sent them to myself and get the same message. Doesn't seem to be a size issue as I've tried with really short clips (4 seconds). As I recall, I didn't have this problem before buying Aperture last fall, when I only had iPhoto. It appears that by default, an attachment to an email automatically comes from my iPhoto files and not Aperture - assume that is supposed to happen but not sure. Thanks for any and all help!

How are you tryin to send the .AVI file? Are you sending the attachment directly from Mail or from Aperture or iPhoto?

Setting up Mail for SSL
Important: These steps require Mac OS X 10.1.3 or later.
1. Open the Mail application.
2. Choose Preferences from the Mail application menu.
3. Click Accounts.
4. Select an account name, and click Edit.
5. Click the Account Options tab.
6. Click the Use SSL checkbox to enable this option.
Selecting the checkbox will auto-populate the default port numbers. If there is a non-default port number already present, it will not change. You can manually enter a number if your ISP gave you a different port number. Be sure you enter the correct port for your mail server here when selecting SSL, even if it auto-populates a default number.
Note: If SSL is accidentally set up when it should not be, or is configured using the incorrect port for your mail server, an alert box with a message similar to this may appear:
"Fetch Error: Couldn't connect to a POP host name mail.apple.com."

the server settings are in settings/mail etc . Tap on email account under the accounts heading then tap on the account name on the next screen, then the outgoing mail server is shown there. If you tap on advanced at the bottom of the screen the incoming settings are then shown

Why is smpt not letting me send mail?

The latest security download did something to my mail settings.My wife and i have a pop account through Cox.Connection doctor tells me that trying to log into SMPT account failed.Make sure the user name and password are correct.However,whenever I try to set the SMPT info. for my account, the exact same info is reflected in my wifes'account.If i try setting her mail first,then her settings appear in my account.
Also,the smpt box shows the account as offline which it is not.The bottom line is that I cannot send mail but can receive it.
Any suggestions?

Further, It seems that whenever i set the outgoing server I then automatically show the account as offline.Is there someway for me to delete or prevent it from showing up under smtp as offline?

Go Mail - Preferences - Accounts and re-input all the settings for it even if they look OK. From time to time a setting can become corrupt, on the surface it looks fine but underneath it's not OK. If you re-input that will remove the old setting and input a new one and this frequently helps.

Did you set up restrictions for changing account info in Settings/General/Restrictions? If yes, disable them and try again to edit your mail account info.
