  • Why won't my original Tiger discs boot on my Macbook Pro, and why can't I reinstall Snow Leopard using other discs?

I have 17" MacBook Pro 3,1 I am trying to reformat so I can sell (I recently bought a 2011 MBP). I had upgraded the OS to Snow Leopard, but the original discs are for Tiger. Of course, now I'm searching high and low for my Snow Leopard upgrade disc, but can't find it. I decided to try and boot from the Tiger discs, but when I did, all I got was a screen that looked like a blizzard of pixels. I was able to boot using the Snow Leopard disc from both my new MBP and my girlfriends MB, but both said that OS X could not be installed on this computer, and I couldn't even use the disc utility to wipe the drive.
After reading a few of the questions on here, I went to my hardware overview to double check the product line for the computer. When I did, I found that my serial number is missing. Apple recently replaced the logic board in the computer (the nVidia graphics card melted, so nVidia floated the bill, even though the computer was long out of Apple Care), so I'm wondering if that's why my serial number is missing. Do I need to have a serial number to reinstall OS X? Am I in deep deep trouble?
I appreciate any and all help, thank you all in advance!

The firmware was likely changed and it's not compatible anymore or the disk is bad.

Those disks don't have the hardware drivers your machine needs.
Your going to need to get a Snow Leopard retail install disk from Amazon/elsewhere.

    Thankfully No.

  • Why can't I reinstall Tiger 10.4 please?

On startup the system time and date had reset to 1976. I was unable to get into the system preferences to reset these and decided to reinstall OSX 10.4 from the original disk. I selected Archive and Reinstall (having restarted from the system disk), but it gets to the bit where it verifies the destination volume and says it can't install. (I tried this 3 times and got the same message).
I then managed to reinstall OSX 10.3.2, but when I try to install OSX 10.4 over that, it just comes up with the same 'can't install' message when it tries to verify the distination disk.
I then tried running Disk Utility First Aid from the system disk (I don't have Nortons) and it says there is an "Overlapped Extent Allocation file (file 1530403d)"
It says it is repairing the disk then gets right to the end and says it cannot repair it!
Any help would be much appreciated as my next plan is to install another hard drive to copy all my data etc to (100Gb+) and reformat the original disk and reinstall Tiger, but I know that will cause lost file problems on other software.
Also, when I eventually get Tiger reinstalled, where can I get system updates for Tiger 10.4 in English on disk as I don't have broadband where I live in Spain and downloading is out of the question because of the file sizes?

    Hi Andalucia,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Ooops, that's a bad one! Usually Disk Utility cannot repair this error. You will have to use a third party utility such as Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro to repair this.
For further information and instructions read these articles:
Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume

  • Why can't PS CC read .gif and .png files anymore?

Everytime I've tried to load my files into my PS like usual (simply dragging the photo to the dock) I get this error message "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file." for both .gif files and .png. It's quite frustrating because a lot of my files on my computer are in .png format and I have previous .gifs I've made that I'd like to edit and can't. I have a Mac OSX and I've tried rewriting the file names but I still get the same message and I've tried making a new document in PS and pasting the photo but I only end up with the image below. I'm not sure what else to do anymore. It's quite frustrating. Any suggestions?

All right. That could also explain why my updates aren't working. (I'll try the same for my illustrator because those updates aren't working also.)

  • Why can't I reinstall my iLife suite of apps on my Mac Mini after having reinstalled Snow Leopard OSX?

Unfortunately my Mac Mini I use for audio production work and web design got slower and slower until one day it just gave up! I blame the internet for this, as before I started using the internet on this computer it was fine, nice and fast without any problems.
I tried reinstalling just the OSX but that didn't work, so I ended up erasing the disk with a full 35-pass option which failed itself after the eleventh pass, but it had still done what I wanted and completely erased the hardisk, so I wasn't bothered. However, now in Utilities, it wasn't finding any hardisk!!! I powered off and thankfully this time the disk was showing and so I tried installing the OSX again and this time it worked!
Next it was time to reinstall iLife that had come with the Mac Mini. No chance! Same error message every time to contact the software manufacturer!!! I've read on the communities that after 2012 this version of iLife apparently doesn't work. Is this true? If so then Apple is ripping customers off. Why should we have to keep upgrading all the time? As the old saying goes, "if it ain't broken, don't fix it!" If this is true that iLife won't work after 2012 then basically Apple is saying that its products are so crap that they won't work after a few years!! Surely not. I've also read in the communities that one person had to pay another $18 out for an iLife suite that works, what crap! Whatever came with the computer should work with the computer and not be limited to just a few years life and we shouldn't have to pay out for another disc when the original has be kept securely in its original packaging! I have an old Windows XP PC which is still going strong today and up until a year ago I had an old Windows 3.1 PC which was still working 22 years after purchase and I still had occasional tasks to carry out on it at DOS level!!
So I'm beginning to wonder whether I should go back to PCs if Apple computers have such a limited lifespan.
I look forward to your comments.

  • Why can't I reinstall OS x ?

Three days ago, my Mac Mini crashed while my son was playing World of Warcraft. It would not start back up, and when we used the start up disk to reboot, it could not repair the errors on the disk.
Today, I attempted to erase the old volume and reinstall OSx. I believe the erase went ok--it didn't really tell me if it was successful or not.
As for the reinstallation, I don't know if I am doing it wrong or what, but it keeps giving me the message that there was an "error in installing the software: please try installing again". So, I have now restarted and attempted unsuccessfully to reinstall 3 times.
    So my two questions are:
    A. How do I know if I successfully erased my drive? and
    B. What could I be doing wrong on installation? My Install CD's are pristine. Could it be that my hard drive is physically damaged? My teenager has been using it heavily during the summer for marathon WOW sessions--could he have damaged it somehow?
Any suggestions on what I should do at this point?

Well, you may just be hosed. If you've really erased the HD and can's install the OS, as I said before, either the install disks are bad, or there's a hardware issue.
Typically, when a Mac behaves badly, I'd boot from an installer CD and run DiskUtility to check the HD. If that reports no errors/problems, I'd boot in single user mode (hold down cms-S when you boot). type fsck -fy once it's booted. If that reports errors and says the disk was modified, try it a few more times. It may eventually say the HD checked out OK. If it keeps reporting problems, fsck likely won't help. But keep in mind, that fsck works on installed OSes. If you have no installed OS, it probably won't help. You can then try installing again.
You can try also resetting the PRAM
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    The sad truth follows:
If you can's get the OS to install on an erased HD, either the Memory, the HD, or some other hardware on your mini has gone bad. I'd suggest googling for replacing Mac mini memory or Mac mini HD, and see what you hubby and his boss are willing to try. I've no experience with replacing the memory or HD on a mini, so I'm out of suggestions other than Google is your friend, you may have to bring your mini for expensive repairs, consider a new iMac and get the AppleCare extended warranty on any computer that is hard to crack open.
Finally, your son, unless he dropped, kicked, threw the mini, probably is innocent
But please feel free to post back with any more questions/comments about troubleshooting this issue.

  • Why can't I reinstall Adobe CS in my iMac

I have 2 iMac G5's both running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Suddenly one decided that it woud not allow Photoshop 9 (CS1) to work so I tried to reinstall. It seems to reinstall but will still not save files. Tried to reinstall  Photoshop CS2, and the whole CS2 suite and the discs will not load at all.
I have tested the disc in the other iMac and it's fine.
I have tried all the obvious repair routes - disc utility, restarting from the system CD, creating a new user, software updates, but still cannot get any of teh Adobe sofatware to reinstall properly.
    Any thoughts much appreciated.

...Backed up hubby's iMac, then got him to clear a whole load of work out.
Restarting, if that's what you did, would have cleared the temporary files and allowed room for the reinstall. In addition, it sounds like you made some more room.
For the "original problem," did you install the 2012-001 Security Update? That caused problems like this for Rosetta/PPC apps. A new patched version v1.1 is available from Software Update or here.

Also, running so close to the edge for free space may be causing this issue.
