Why can't I remove icons from desktop

Why can't I remove or relocate icons on the desktop. When I attempt to do so a circle with a slash thru it appears and it snaps back to it's original position. I also can not remove icons from the trash to the desktop for the same reason.

This may fix it. Open Terminal in Utilities and Copy/Paste -- don't attempt to type this in. This will set the correct Permissions on your Home Folder. (Disk Utility Permissions Repair won't touch these.)
sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Then hit return.
If you've never used the sudo command before, you will get a warning and then be prompted to enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in.
Wait until you get a new $ sign prompt and then close the window.

  • Why can't i drag photos from desktop to iphoto

why can't i drag photos from desktop to iphoto all of a sudden?

    From iPhoto help:
To import photos from a hard disk:
    Do one of the following:
Drag one or more photos or a folder of photos from the Finder to the iPhoto main window.
Drag one or more photos or a folder of photos from the Finder to the iPhoto icon in the dock.
In iPhoto, choose File > “Import to Library.” Then select the photos you want to import and click Import.

  • Why can't I remove iMessage from iCloud backups?

Why can't I remove iMessage from iCloud backups?
I've noticed that my iCloud backups are constantly hitting their 5GB max, even after clearing out camera rolls, etc.
After some testing, I've found that iMessages are also backed up.   For someone like me, I'm constantly sending pictures / videos to friends and family, having a little guy under a year old (but that's not important).
In any case, it seems you can set iCloud backup for just about every app EXCEPT iMessages.   The only way I've found to solve this is to constantly delete message threads from my iPhone, so that they aren't taking up iCloud space.   But this honestly is a bit of a pain (okay, only a little bit)...  why can't I keep my messages around for as long as I want, without backing them up?

Make sure you have their icloud email they use for imessage in their contact information before sending them an imessage.

  • Removing Icons from Desktop?

This question is most like simple to fix.
I am curious to know how to remove the icon off of the desktop after it has been installed and is currently in the applications folder. For example, I just downloaded Skype and it is on my desktop. How can I get this off my desktop? Is it ok to eject it or will that remove the program?

    Hi amsayl2!
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There are most likely two files involved, one is .dmg file and the other is the mounted disk image. After you've dragged the Skype program file into applications you can eject/unmount the Skype bundled disk image. You'll then want to also remove the .dmg file that was initially downloaded, which is either in your Downloads stack or on your desktop.

  • Why can't I remove attachments from emails in the Sent items folder?

I Recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion, and so far, there are at least a couple of things that puzzle me.
One is that now I don't have the option to "Remove Attachments" from emails in the sent items folder. It seems to work normally
in the Inbox and Drafts folders, but not in the Sent items. Go figure ???
Another thing that bothers me is that in Preview, when I save a screen shot, or a scan, etc., I no longer have the option of saving it as a GIF
(which, when better quality isn't absolutely necessary, is often much lower in KB or MB than a PNG or JPG, etc.. When I store lots of things as such images, I'd rather have that option.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I have now created a smart mailbox as described above (good idea), and although I have some 50 messages in my Sent box, all with attachments (waiting to be removed so I can store the messages in the proper mailboxes), the smart mailbox is empty. So, Mail doesn't recognise these messages as containing attachments.
This led me to think that maybe Mail has been redesigned to work the way you would expect it to, at last; to contain a link to attachments instead of including them in all their bits and bytes. That would mean that the messages in my Sent box - with attachments - could be stored in local (or server-side) mailboxes without taking up extensive space.
But then I checked the size of my Sent Messages folder inside the Mail Folder in Finder, and - whoops - it's 50+ MB. So the sent messages do contain attachments all right. And Mail doesn't recognise these, since a) the smart mailbox trick says that the messages are free from attachments, and b) the Remove Attachments menu option is disabled.
I will have to wait for the next Mail update, and my Sent box will grow accordingly ...

  • How to remove icon from desktop

I have added an external hard drive (for back up.)   It has a USB connection.  Its icon appears on my desktop.  It is only so much clutter, and I would like to make it disappear, as I have done with the icon of the internal HD.  Can that be done?  If so, how?

You do it the same way you did with your internal HD.
Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the desktop -> External disks

  • Cannot remove  Icon from desktop

I had to copy some files from an SD onto my desktop for a class project and now no matter what I do the folder for the SD card wont go away. I can't eject it or put it in the trash or anything. I no longer have access to the SD card to try to re-eject it properly. Sorry, I'm kind of a neat freak when it comes to my desktop so this is killing me inside. =P any suggestions are more than welcome.
I have the newest 15" macbook pro model and I'm running OS 10.6.4. Thanks in advance for the help!

Quick aside. If you're running 10.6.6, update your profile info.

  • Why can't i remove files from my iPhone?

I have audiobooks and music files on my iPhone and iPod that I would like to remove so that I can put new ones on and I cannot remove them in iTunes.  I never had this problem before iOS 5 and the latest update for iTunes.  I have tried clicking on the file and pressing the delete key and right clicking but the delete/remove option is no longer there.  I have searched the iTunes help file and cannot find any answers.  Does anyone know how to remove these files?  Thanks in advance for any help!

No one here knows why. No one can help you with so little information because we do not have a crystalball. You will need to provide detailed information about what happens when you try to buy an app in order to begin to help with your issue.

  • Why can't I import photos from desktop

I am unable to import photos into my iphoto from my desktop. An error comes up after I file/import/desktop/photo saying this:
unrecognized file type, the following files cannot be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
The images I try to import are scanned into a photoimpression program, than I save as to my desktop as a .jpg image.
    Can anyone help?

Yes, it is an ordinary folder on the desktop and I get the same warning when I just try to drag the image into iphoto. The same thing happens when I try to take a picture from a CD where I have photos saved. I've tried save as with those as well on to the desktop and no luck, in a folder or not.

  • Why can't I remove attachments from mail in Apple Mail 5

I'm sure I used to be able to do this in SL?
I can do it on some messages, but not all, and not quite sure of a rhyme or reason (I've noted others think it doesn't work on Sent mail, but SOME of my sent messages let me delete attachments??)
    Has there been a change?
    Will there be a fix?

  • Why can"t I remove ITunes from my Dell. I keep getting a message that says there is an older version of bonjour. I can't locate it. Help!!

I am trying to download iTunes 10.xx and keep getting a message that says I have an older version of bonjour on my laptop. I thought I removed everything associated with apple. Where is it hiding?

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Why can't I attach files from desktop to hotmail?

I'm trying to attach files to a "hotmail" message and my eMac just spins forever. There must be some security settings preventing this. Can anybody assist me? Thanks.

As I don't use hotmail I don't have experience with this problem. Maybe just move away from the Microsoft windows.live hotmail, to something more Apple friendly.
Do they have a support site where you could see if other's are experiencing this problem?
If you have an ISP, don't you get an email account with that, as part of the service? Often you can have several email addresses with the one ISP. For that you can use Apple's Mail application.
If you are traveling overseas and want web based email, the other alternative is Gmail.
Sorry I can't help solve your problem but it seems uncommon and I am not familiar with hotmail.
One web based email I use is Yahoo and that seems to work OK. Maybe switch to that.

  • How can I remove icons from the Finder sidebar?  Were transferred when I set up laptop from my desktop computer.  Tried dragging off but that didn't work.

How can I remove icons from the Finder sidebar?  Transferred info from my Mac Pro desktop computer (using target mode) and there were folder icons on the Mac Pro Finder sidebar that are now on the MacBook Finder sidebar, even though these folders do not exist on the MacBook.  Tried to drag them off, which is the usual way to get rid of folders that the user adds to the sidebar (as opposed to those that can be added via the Customize Toolbar dropdown menu) but was unsuccessful.  I then unchecked all of the Customize Toolbar menu items and the folder icons still remained.  What else can I do?

Did you hold the Command (Apple) key while dragging them off the sidebar? That usually makes them go *poof*.
