New Mac Mini Server, has two Hard drives, could I install an older Mac OS on the second drive and switch start up disks to run PowerPc applications?

I haven't purchased a Mac Mini at this time and I may not if I can't use it as a non server. I need to update my system I would be better off buying a new Mac with Snow Leopard the last app that will run Rosetta. The Mac Mini Server has a quad 2.0 processor and 4 GB RAM and two internal hard drives and should out perform my dual 1.25 G4. I can run PPC apps on my G4 but it is 8+ years old and seems to be getting noisy. I don't want to tie myself to another old machine. I want a machine that will work with Intel Apps I was hoping that the two hard drives would allow me to boot from the second with Snow Leopard and use Lion on the first drive to be able to keep up to date with all my other universal apps and Mac OS up grades. The application I use the most is my CanvasX app with drawing & vector effects, text & typography, sprite technology, painting, image editing, and multimedia tools are all in this one app but will not be updated to run Intel apps. I am frozen in time because my most valuable Application won't be updated and Apple has cut me off by not supporting PPC in Lion and onward; Apple used to backward support but I guess that they are no longer as user friendly and concerned with a happy user. I have always been a loyal Mac user and I will not migrate to Windows under any circumstance; I hate windows!
    Thanks for your prompt response,

I am getting a message "can't open because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."  What do I do about these programs?

In defense of the original poster, I just went through the Lion page (http://www.apple.com/macosx/) and the sub-pages linked on the top (including the 250 new features) and nowhere does it say anything about dropping Rosetta/PowerPC compatibility. A simple compatibility line in the tech specs page could help these kinds of threads. Nevertheless, the argument that Apple should have made this change more prominent is quite valid IMO.
Remember that Apple prides itself on being simple so don't expect everyone to be as up to date on compatibility issues as you. With the big uptake of new users in the last couple of years, these kind of questions should be expected, especially since most users are coming from Windows where compatibility is king (I can run apps from 10+ years ago with almost no issues).
Complicating the issue further is that there is no obvious way to see which older applications are PPC and which are not (who knew Warcraft 3 was PPC and not universal??).
A simple solution could be for Apple to provide copy of Rosetta that users can purchase if they want compatibility. Who knows, maybe such a solution is going to come from a third party

  • Why can't I run my Java program with just the JRE, the JDK is required?

I've recently written 3 programs in Java using the Netbeans IDE with JDK 1.6 as the default Java platform. The compile-time libraries include the Swing Application Framework. I use BuildDesk from ProductiveMe to package the each program into a Windows installer.
When I install the programs on a new computer without a JRE or JDK being present, and attempt to run them I get an error (as expected) stating that there is no JVM. The messages says that I need to install JDK 1.3 or higher. I downloaded the latest JRE onto the new computer and attempted to run the programs and I get the same error message. My question is, why can't I run these programs with just the JRE installed? Why do I need the JDK? When I install the JDK, the programs run fine. The typical user may not have the JDK on their system, but they likely have the JRE if they've run Java programs before.
Is the answer as simple as there must be library functions being used by the programs that belong to the JDK, but not the JRE? I'd rather a user not have to install the JDK verses the JRE because they may also have to update some Windows environment variables.
Thank you for any help on this issue.

Thanks for your replies. I further investigated BuildDesk and found an option which allows a JVM check but that check needs the JDK. I stopped the JVM check and rebuilt using BuildDesk and it now only requires the JRE to run the programs. The reason why I use BuildDesk is to package more than just the jar file for the user. BuildDesk allows me to create a installation folder structure as well as include any other files in the build. I could just as well zipped all this together for the user but decided against that method.I don't think anyone will question your usage of an installer tool; that is entirely up to you. But what is questionable is that you have problems with that installer tool and then go look for help in a Java programming forum. The next time, go look for help at the source. If there is no way to acquire help (support, a forum, a mailinglist, anything) then that is a very good reason to not use the product in question.

  • I have an early 2011 macbook pro 13" running 10.6.8, if i upgrade to osx mavericks 10.9.1 will I still be able to run powerpc applications?

I have an early 2011 macbook pro 13" running 10.6.8, if i upgrade to osx mavericks 10.9.1 will I still be able to run powerpc applications?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mac OS X 10.6.8 is the last Mac OS X version that supports PowerPC applications, so if you upgrade to OS X Mavericks, you will lose the ability to use PowerPC applications.
I recommend you to look for upgrades to those apps, but if you cannot or any of your apps are not available for Intel-based Macs, a different option you have is to create a second partition and install OS X Mavericks there, so you can still use your old apps by starting up into Snow Leopard. To create the partition > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html

For videos. Uninstall the current Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Quit then relaunch Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
    Try a video.
All online bank statments are in PDF format.
    Go to  /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Move the Adobe PDF Browser plugin  (or just PDF Browser plugin) to the Trash.
    Now try a bank statement.

  • Why can't I run quicktime videos on ipad2?

why can't I run quicktime videos on ipad2?

    Eric-
QuickTime is capable of playing more video formats than the iPad.  The iPad can play M4V, MP4 and some MOV format videos.  It can not play formats like WMV and FLV.
One thing you can do is to convert the video formats on your computer.
A free program that can do it is HandBrake, which is available for both PC and Macintosh at <Download>.

  • Why?  Why can't I run iMovie and have it

Why? Why can't I run iMovie and have it ask me whether I want to load an existing project or new one? I don't see a setting for this in Preferences.

I haven't gone to the trouble of actually testing to see which uses more CPU power, but Firefox has been faster than Safari on every Mac I've ever owned.
To see CPU usage by process, open the terminal (in Utilities) and enter 'top' at the command line. You might have to expand the window as processes don't appear in any logical order.
It could also be hardware-related: I have late 2009 mini with similar specs and it pinwheels easily.

  • Can I bypass not being able to run PowerPC applications on my mac?

Is it possible to bypass the "You cannot open the open because PowerPC applications are no longer supported"? I can't find anything and I need to get past it to instal a game. My macbook pro w/out retina runs the latest version of mavericks by the way.

Yes: You can install Snow Leopard Server into Parallels and regain access to Rosetta, which will allow many games to run again in Mavericks.  However some games with complex or 3D graphics may not run well or work at all in virtualization.

  • How to run PowerPC application under Mountain Lion?

I ahve just upgraded my ancient laptop running Leopard to a newer model running Mountain Lion.
I use a legacy application (Filemaker v5.5) for work that cannot be upgraded in the near future for my work.
This is a PowerPC application that is  no longer supported. Is there an emulator or utility that will allow me to run this (and other) PowerPC applications?
Is there a version of Rosetta or something similar I can get?
The alternative is to create a Windows partition (shudder) and run it there.

No Mac will run an OS or OS point version earlier than what it originally shipped with. You can see which iMacs shipped with Snow, from this link. That said, it's not entirely clear that even the mid-2011, if it shipped with Lion, will still be able to run Snow.

baltwo said he got it running on a mid-2011 refurb, but on a separate partition from a clone.

  • Help: How can my user run my Application

    Group,
I created a user "test1" as developer, user "test2" as end user at the same workspace TT. Then I created the application testapp1 as "test1".
Then I login to my website http://localhost:7777/htmldb/htmldb_login as
    workspace: TT
    username: test2
    password: temppassword
But after I login as test2, there is only one item "administrative", I do not see any applications that test1 just creaetd. How couild I make the application created by "test1" seen by "test2"? How can "test2" run the application "testapp1"?
Thanks very much for your help.

I think if you read the thread carefully, you'll find that it's not suggesting you give out your developer password. It's suggesting that you give your users a URL that takes users directly to the application rather than the development environment (workspace), e.g.
    http://www.myurl.com/pls/dad/f?p=101:1
Where 101 is the application ID and 1 the page where you'd like the user to start. If authentication is required, the user will be presented with a login page. If you want a menu of applications, you'll have to create a static page with links to each application. You could also implement a menu using a public HTML DB application with a list of links.

  • TS3938 I can't print because PowerPC applications are no longer supported?

What has happened to my printer connection?  I received the "you can't open the application 7100 Series Utility Launcher because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.  I need help.

Your printer appears as compatible with OS X Lion and Mountain Lion, so there are newer drivers for your printer.
Make sure that your printer is turned on. Then, open System Preferences > Print & Fax, and press the + button to add the printer. Then, just choose your printer and it will be added. Do you see your printer?
Also, you can try installing the Lexmark drivers before doing that > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1397
