QuickTime is capable of playing more video formats than the iPad. The iPad can play M4V, MP4 and some MOV format videos. It can not play formats like WMV and FLV.
One thing you can do is to convert the video formats on your computer.
A free program that can do it is HandBrake, which is available for both PC and Macintosh at <Download>.

To add to what Mayahyuk asked, are you also using a previous version of iMovie '08 or performing a manual QT conversion of iMovie '08? As previously indicated, Sony video clips when imported to previous versions of iMovie or when converted by QT. This is because Sony stores its video in a "muxed" format that is only playback supported by QT. Previous versions of iMovie automatically convert such files for editing as part of the import process losing the audio. (Manually converting the files in QT applications does also loses the audio.)
Can I do something to make the sound play?
In the case of Sony's MPEG-1 clips, simply use an MPEG-based, third-party conversion application to convert the video arnd retain the audio. Applications like iSquint (free), MPEG Streamclip (free), FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), etc. will handle this.
i would also love to know the solution to this, since i have tons of videos i can do nothing with...
iSquint would likely help in your case as you can drop "handfuls" of clips to the "batch" processing window and allow it to automatically convert each in turn on its own.

Actually it is not Adobe refusing to build an ios version of Flash, it is Apple who has refused to work closely with Adobe to allow them to create a very efficient version.
In Steve Job's own words he says "WE do not allow Flash on IOS..."
Blackberry, who has been working with Adobe, and allowing them access to the resources they need in order to create a very efficient Flash player has done so with incredible success. Even the Register points out how insanely well the Flash player and Air enviroment runs on the playbook, and during their tests found zero effect on battery compared to using any other software on the device, which gets about 13 hours in battery life.
Google, has also allowed Adobe access to the resources required to make an efficient player and have done so with incredible success, Android 3.1 and Flash 10.3 incorporated Hardware acceleration, the ability for flash to perform operations on the gpu, requiring far less energy. Many reports coming out have found the same situaton as they did with the blackberry, meaning Flash, when allowed access to the proper resources can be less resource intensive and less of a battery drain than any other software on the device.
Windows, has been working with adobe and allowing them access to these resources for years, and you can see the difference in performance on a windows machine vs a mac.
If Apple does not want to work with Adobe to allow the Flash runtime to perform up to its potential on their devices then that is fine. But understand it is Apple that is crippling the flash runtime and causing it to perform task in ways it is not designed to, and thus requiring more resources, and battery.
Last year, when Steve Jobs released his open letter, I was up in the air about it. But now after seeing company after company manage to get the Flash runtime working and being super efficicient, I have no choice but to think that the only company having issues with it (Apple) must be doing so via thier own choice, and not due to the fault of adobe, or the efficiency of the platform.

For videos. Uninstall the current Flash plugin then reinstall new > Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Quit then relaunch Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
Try a video.
All online bank statments are in PDF format.
Go to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Move the Adobe PDF Browser plugin (or just PDF Browser plugin) to the Trash.
Now try a bank statement.

2. You say that your video is from a Panasonic Lumix camera...which model and what are your camera settings?
We should be about to know what your source media are from that although a properties readout from programs such as MediaInfo or gspot would be useful.

Hi. My camera is a Canon 600D. And yes my videos are stored in the Aperture library and they are not referenced. Even then I tried to select all the videos in Aperture and clicked 'consolidate masters' and there was a messge that said all 'none of the files are referenced',... so they didn't need consolidating.
I also tried preferences> export> external video editor > choose > iMovie. And then right click on the video to edit with imovie. Even then the video didn't show up in iMovie. It seems like the only option for me is to import the videos directly to iMovie which means there will be two versions of the same file stored in my computer eating up space.
APPLE. What are you doing?

Why can't I open facebook videos on my ipad and iphone any more? I used to be able to open most but now I can't open any. Now it just comes up with a message 'unable to play video.Check your internet connection and try again' There is nothing wrong with my internet connection. I am on wifi and full signal strength. This is happening on both ipad and iphone. It's not the problem where sometimes a video wants Adobe to open it. This message comes up as soon as you try to click on the video play button in the video. Can anyone tell me how to resolve this please?

Thanks for this Griff but it's not the app that isn't responding. I am in the facebook app (on both iPhone and iPad) and the app is working fine but if people post a video I can't look at the video on the iPhone or iPad. i always used to be able to but now it keeps coming up with the message I mentioned above. So I can no longer watch videos from facebook on either my iPad or iPhone. Here is a screen shot of my phone of what is happening. As you can see I have full wifi so there is nothing wrong with my internet connection. Why can't Aperture supply referenced Videos to iMovie?`

I recently figured out that I have some videos inside my Aperture library, the rest is referenced in a separate location.

Because that is the way the program was written.
Seriously there is no way to answer that question. The designers of Aperture made this choice, whether it is because of some limitation in the underlying software or for other reasons no one can say.
