Why Can't I see or access my external hard drive anymore using finder

I have a MacBook using Lion 10.7.5 and I use a Seagate 1 TByte external hard drive to store large photo and video files so that these won't take up space on my system hard drive. I also use the drive to share files with friends, colleagues and family members. Just recently I was no longer able to see my harddrive when I plugged it into the USB port on the Mac. However, when using the Disk Utilities, I was able to see the hard drive but could not access or see the files. Therefore the USB cable and USB port is working from a hardware perspective.  The light also was on when I plugged the hard drive into the USB port so I know the hard drive is working.  I brought the laptop and hard drive to my local Apply store to see if they could determine the problem. They did everything I already did regarding the testing of hardware. They recommended that I reload my software because something in the OS must have gotten corrupted. I re-installed the OS and the updates to the version.  The re-install DIDN'T help.  Using Bootcamp with Windows XP which is installed on my MacBook, I wanted to find out if Windows would recognize the hard drive and also give me access to the files.  Using Windows, I was able to now see the drive and access the files. I now know the hard drive works, the USB cable and port is working and windows gave me the ability to access all of the files.
THE FIX: The hard drive was stuck in the Windows Mount Mode and because of this, the Mac OS was not able to recognize the hard drive using finder in Mac OS.  When I was still in Windows, I ejected or dismounted the dick prior to removing the hard drive from the MacBook.  I then shut down Windows and restarted the Mac OS.  Once the system was fully up, I plugged the hard drive into the MacBook via the USB port. The Hard Drive is now being recognized by my Macbook once more. I can again access all my files.
HOW THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED: While sharing my hard drive with a colleague to transfer some files on a PC using Windows, the colleague disconnected the hard drive from the PC after the files were transferred by pulling the USB cable out of the USB port without a software dismount or ejection.  This caused the hard drive to hang in a "windows mounted state" even though there was no power to the hard drive. When peripherals are connected to either a Mac or PC systems, they should always to properly dismounted via a software dismount or a system ejection. Proper dismount of peripherals will always insure the closure and correct allocation of data within the booting sectors and data fields of the hard drive.

Thanks everyone. I suppose I'll just reformat for Apple. I need to use it for large files, and I suppose I could survive without editing ablities on Windows.
There's another alternative, format it as exFat, 4G limit does not apply and OSX + Windows will be able to read/write.

  • Can I put my library on an external hard drive and use it between two computers?

Can I put my library on an external hard drive and use it between two computers? I have two MBP; I will refer to one as computer A and to the other as computer B. I would like to be able to plug in my external hard drive, boot up iTunes, and if there were any changes made to the library previous to its last time accessed on this compluter, they show up on that computer, regardless of being imported on the other.
A hypothetical example: I import three albums called 1, 2, and 3 on computer A over a week or so. I take the external hard drive and plug it into computer B. The entire library which was visible on A, is visible on B, including albums 1, 2, and 3.
Is this possible? If so, what files need to be copied onto the external? I'm trying some different combinations, trial and error basically. Hopefully someone knows and can answer before I mess up my library. I also want to do this to free up space on my computer. All importing will be done from disc.

iTunes/Preferences/Advanced : point your iTunes to the new location of the Library.
Set "Share on local network" in the Sharing tab, and you or everyone on the local network can play your music.
You make a backup first of the Library.
Move the follwing to the new location:
    /Users/your username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
    have fun.

  • Why Can't I Copy Files from an External Hard Drive or SD Card?

Major problem here... Why when I try copying files from an external hard drive or an SD card onto my internal iMac hard drive, it doesn't work?  The status bar that pops up, shows that it completes the transfer of the files to 100%; however, when it does in fact finish, the files actually do not appear on my hard drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  This is one of many problems I have been finding with OS X Lion and am very much on the verge of going back to Snow Leopard.
    Thank you.

Have u tried the usual? Safe boot. Delete finder plist files? etc. And the drives are formatted for mac yes?

  • Why can't I make changes on my external hard drive?

I have an external hard drive that I set up through Windows XP that I can now access through Mac OS X on my MacBook. Unfortunately, I'm not able to delete or make any changes to any of the files through the Finder. Why is that, and can it be changed?

  • Why can't I copy files from my external hard drive - error code -50.

I sm trying to back up an external hard drive to a network drive. Some files copy but not all;.  SOmetimes a folder seems to have copied but then I see that most of the files inside have not.  And sometimes I just get 'An unexpected error has occurred'.  Error code - 50.
I need to have a back up copy of the files on this hard drive.  How can I stop this happening and copy files properly and securely?
The external hard drive is a LaCie bought from Apple, share formatted FAT32.
The network drive is a WD MyBookLIve Duo which WD tell me should work equally well with any operating system.
Please advise.  I need to archive a security copy of this data urgently

  • Why can't I download songs from an external hard drive onto iTunes?

So I have an external hard drive with some songs on it that I wanted to get on iTunes so they can be synced to my iPod. I plugged my hard drive in and then went to iTunes where I clicked on "File" (in the top left corner) and scrolled down to "Add folder to Library". I then found my external hard drive and selected the albums/songs that I wanted.
They loaded onto iTunes just fine. Everything looked right and the songs were all on the list. I even managed to get album artwork on most of them.
Then I went to "sync iPod" and an alert message popped up saying "Some of your songs were not synced to your iPod because they could not be found." (Or something very similar to that)
So none of the songs made it onto my iPod and when I checked the Library list again, all of the songs I had just put on iTunes had exclamation points in front of them.
What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Sounds like you
    1) added the songs to the itunes database, but did not copy the acutal files to the PC's internal HD
    2) unplugged the exHD and now itunes doesn't know now to find them anymore
If you plug the exHD back in, and it has the same drive letter as it did when you added the songs to itunes, it should work.

  • I have an older MacBook Pro using 10.4.11 and want to use new operating system to use the latest iLife. Can i install 10.7 on an external hard drive and use the external hard drive to run new system while leaving my old system intact?

I want to use a new version of iLife (for iMovie and iDVD) but am currently running OS 10.4.11, which won't work with the newer iLife programs. Can i install OS 10.6.3 or 10.7 on an external hard drive, boot to that hard drive and work with the new software (installed on the external hard drive) using my MacBook Pro  (circa 2005/6) as the engine while leaving my laptop running 104.11 the rest of the time?

Yes, you can use an external drive. To upgrade, however, means:
Purchase Snow Leopard DVD then update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8.
Access the App Store with your Apple ID and purchase and download Lion.
Your computer must meet system requirements:
    Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Obviously, you do not have to upgrade to Lion but can stop at Snow Leopard 10.6.8 which is sufficient for the current versions of iLife apps. Note that iDVD is no longer part of the newest version of iLife. Lion 10.7.2 or later is needed should you wish to use iCloud.

"You don't, they only appear in open file dialogs and in tool panels like in iMovie, iPhoto.
To view your media, you open the app that you use to manage that type of media." this on the other hand was zero help
What you did doesn't show the Media Browser. It just shows the folders where your media is stored. You may be correct that was all that cobacc wanted.
The Media Browser shows the actual media in thumbnails so that you can preview the media.
However, neither requires any Sharing services to be enabled.

  • Can no longer access USB external hard drive

Hi - I am running OS X 10.8.4 on my iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009), and have been using a La Cie USB  external hard drive for several years for my Time Machine backups without issues.  All of a sudden yesterday, the external hard drive disappeared from Finder and my Desktop,  and as a result, no more Time Machine backups  I rebooted both the external hard drive and iMac several times  and changed the USB cable but with no success.  Disk Utility and Time Machine cannot see the external hard drive but it does appear under System Information => USB (see below).  I connected it to my Windows 8 laptop. The Windows laptop can see the external hard drive under Disk Management as an uninitialized disk.  But I will not allow me to initialize it and therefore cannot acces it.
      Product ID:          0x0951
      Vendor ID:          0x059f  (LaCie)
      Version:           0.00
      Serial Number:          152D203380B6
      Speed:          Up to 480 Mb/sec
      Manufacturer:          LaCie
      Location ID:          0x24300000 / 4
      Current Available (mA):          500
      Current Required (mA):          2
Any help to restore the external hard drive would be appreciated.
    Ron

Thank you for your quick response.  Disk Utility does not see the hard drive.  Windows 8 does see it under Device Manager and says that it is working propoerly but it will not allow me to initialize it.   As indicated  to Lin Davis,  I'll buy a new external hard drive.

Hey guys, how can i password protect my files in external hard drive? I want to access those files both from mac and windows PC!

If you want a cross-platform solution that doesn't require the use of third-party software, use an external drive with hardware encryption. The device will have either a physical key or a numeric keypad. I don't have a specific recommendation.

I imported photos as cat to new hard drive. Using "find" lightroom 5 can't see any photos that are PSD, how can I fix?  I can see them in the folder using windows explorer.

  • Cannot access shared external hard drive with other mac accounts

I cannot access a shared external hard drive with other mac accounts (all accounts are on the same macbook Pro). The shared external drive is shared via time capsule and is connected (of course) in USB. I see well this external hard drive as a shared disk with my main account. Yes shared option has been activated with the Airport Utility .. but when I open other account these othe accounts can see the external drive but cannot access to its content that is flagged with a no way sign. Strangely enough when I close my main account and start opening a new session with one of the other account then fine I can access the external hard drive and its content .. BUT then it is from my main account than I cannot access its content the no way sign showing ..
Looks like only one account at a time can access the content of this SHARED external hard drive .. any one as an idea on how to really make it a shared hard drive so that all accounts on the same mac can also access it ? I am at my wit ends on this case. THANKS ..

Results of my enquiries at Apple Genius Bar .. the guys found the problem interesting. They've been unable to provide a fix neither to give any explanation as to the reason why. To be fair I was not much impressed by the technical level demonstrated ..
In the mean time I have found that if account no.1 can see the shared external drive content and in such case account no.2 (same Mac computer) cannot see its content (only the external HD with a no way sign) this account no.2 can UNMOUNT (by ejecting) this external HD from account 1 and then remount it (just clicking on the TC shared part in a finder window) and .. see and access its content ; whilst account no.1 cannot see its content anylonger. Unless it unmounts the shared external HD and remount it .. then account no.2 can see its content anylonger. This can goes on an on.
So eventually YES the TC can allow to share a USB external drive between several accounts and a same Mac .. BUT this require to unmount and remount EACH time the external drive is accessed from a "no.2 account". So OK to share files with seldom access but not practical in case of frequent access needed.
I just I have now to figure how iTunes can automatically unmount and remount a shared external HD when it needs to access one of this shared HD content from on time account no.1 and then next time from account no.2. May be I am asking too much ..

  • How can I sort out iphoto with my external hard drive?

Hello, and sorry if this has been answered before, i did have a look, but with no results.
a while ago my ibook filled up, and so i bought an external hard drive. i then dragged the photos across onto it, deleted them off my i book. no problems.
a while later i read about setting up my external hard drive to use it as an iphoto library. i did this, pressed the "alt" key whilst iphoto opened and i was able to open my photos from the external drive.
however, all the photos that i'd orignally transferred were not there, only the most recent ones.
so, to sum up, when i look at the photos on my external drive, they are all there, but when i try opening them with iphoto i can only see some of them.
how can i re-set up my external drive so i can see all my photos using i book?
i was thinking i could drag the photos that don't open from the external drive into iphoto, then redrag the entire iphoto library back onto the external drive. however, i only have 2 gb of space on my ibook, and about 20000 photos in total.

    sorry for being unclear.
i will try and explain again.
i still have my iphoto library on my internal drive.
i initially dragged and dropped the photos from iphoto onto the external drive and deleted them off my internal drive to free up space.
then i read how i better way to do it would be to drag my iphoto library from the finder, onto my external drive, because then i would be able to open it from iphoto. so i did that and when i pressed the option key whilst iphoto was setting up, accessed my iphoto file on my external drive.
the only photos to appear were the ones from when i dragged the entire iphoto file from finder, not the previous lot that i had dragged from iphoto itself.
so, any ideas how i can get the photos that aren't showing up using iphoto, to show up?

  • How do I block access to external hard drive

I have a child account on my computer, and have set up various parental controls but can't see a way to block the access to external hard drives which are connected to my Mac.
I have a couple of drives which contain my work related files so I don't want my child to view or edit them. Is there a way I can stop her seeing these drives when she searches for something in Finder?
    Thanks

You can create encrypted sparse disk image.
Once you have done that you can move the data you wish to protect into it.
This way the only to access the data is by first providing the password to open the disk image.
