Why can't I send an iMessage without attaching a photo?

Hi,
When I upgraded to iOS5 and got the iMessage app I was able to send an iMessage with no problem. Now all of a sudden I can't if I don't attach a photo. The send button doesn't get activated if I only type a text for sending. I have to click on the camera button and take or select a photo before the send button gets activated.
Thanks in advance,
Al

Yes and that didn't work but I just read a response from MTreece to another in the community with same problem that I have and that solved it. I was only typing text in the subject box and not the text box. Thanks for responding anyway.
Cheers!

Why can't I send an iMessage to someone from my iPad unless they message me first?  Even if it is someone I have chatted with on iMessage before, if they have been cleared off my screen, I can't send them anything unless they message me first.  I know for a fact they have an up to date iPhone.

  • Why can't I send quicktime movies via attachment?

    Hello everyone
This is my first post since making the transition over to mac a few months ago. While the transition has been pretty smooth, I have run into a little problem which I can't seem to get my head around.
I have recently started using .mac as my primary email account. Most of my friends do not have a .mac account (80% have hotmail accounts) but sending photos and text-based emails have not been a problem.
However, I've been trying to send quicktime movie files as attachments (< 10 mb limit) and I keep getting a error message "Can not send message using server "smtp.mac.com".
From quickly browsing the discussion boards, there was a suggestion to change the port settings from 25 to 587 which I tried. Unfortunately, It didn't made a difference so I've changed it back.
I am currently participating in the 60 day trial - does apple place any restrictions on what I can or can't send during that period?
I know I've probably made a silly mistake somewhere - I just can't seem to find it.
Any help would be most appreciated
    Thank you
    Ash

Usually webmail servers with size limits refuse to accept a message
that is too long and generally notify you of that.
True if a message that exceeds the overall message size limit for the recipient's incoming mail server is actually sent.
I'm basing my conclusion this is an overall message size limit problem on the size of one of the pre-encoded QuickTime files the OP has tried to send and the following copied from his first post in this thread.
I have recently started using .mac as my primary email account. Most of my friends do not have a .mac account (80% have hotmail accounts) but sending photos and text-based emails have not been a problem.
I don't believe he is accessing/using his Hotmail account in Mail to send these messages since he referred to trying to send a QuickTime file attachment to his Hotmail account with his .Mac account via the Mail.app but I may be wrong.
Since you are a relatively new Mail.app user, I'll give you an example of an improper error message provided by the Mail.app.
If the incoming mail server for an account that you access with the Mail.app is down or experiencing a temporary problem, the Mail.app will prompt you to manually enter the account's password when checking the account for new Mail even though this password is stored in your Keychain instead of a more proper error message such as:
There was a problem communicating with the incoming mail server for this account.
The incoming mail server is not available and may be down or experiencing a problem.
Please check with your ISP or email account provider for this account.
Sometimes there is a problem with the Keychain password for the account that running Keychain First Aid will (or should) resolve but the problem is not having any idea where to look or where the problem lies based on this prompt to manually enter the account's password only.
I've been using the Mail.app exclusively since Jaguar was introduced and such an improper prompt without a valid error message is my biggest complaint about the application.
Sorry to get off topic here.

  • Why can't I send an iMessage to one person only?

I can iMessage everyone on my iPhone but I can't iMessage this one person I've tried like three times but it just says "not delivered". Please help!

Do they still use an iOS device? If they had an iOS device and moved to a different type of device there was an issue where their number was still registered under iMessage and would not send as a regular text. Apple has created a way for those people to disconnect their number from iMessage so texts can then be received by iOS users.

  • Why can't i send imessages to my dads iphone?

Why can't i send a imessage to my dads iphone??
It comes up with not delivered and when i press retry it does nothing??
    What is happening??

    1. Messages on the iPad can only be sent to other iDevices and Mac Computers running Mountain Lion.
    2. They must also be registered with iMessage
Note: The two above conditions must be met.

  • Why is iMessage taking my incoming emails and then not making them available for my PC to get?  Why can I not send a text msg with photos when iMessage is turned off (but MMS is still on).

    Apple is great!
Why is iMessage taking my incoming emails and then not making them available for my PC to get?  Why can I not send a text msg with photos when iMessage is turned off (but MMS is still on).
I compose an iMessage with the destination as my email address and I attach 2 photos I want on my PC.  I send them several times from my iPhone 5C but they never arrive. I look at my ipad later and realize that it's iMessage app is getting ( and swallowing) these emails. I then turn the ipad off.  Still can't get the photos through because iphone is now getting them on it's iMessage.  I turn off the iMessage feature and try to send photos from text msging.  Phone tells me it can't send photos unless iMessage it turned on.  What happened to regular MMS text messaging?  I go and try to send photos as an email attachment and see that there is no option to attach from the stupid email program.  I look up online to learn about the brave new world of apple attachments and send them.
Why is iMessage taking my incoming emails and then not making them available for my PC to get?
The email program on my iphone is not configured to remove messages from the server.
If iMessage is turned off I don't have the issue.
Why can I not send a text msg with photos when iMessage is turned off (but MMS is still on).

Did not work. I've selected iMessage to ON and left it. After a few hours I recieved a message "activation unsuccessful. Turn on iMessage to try again". This has been going on for the past 3 days.

  • I have an ipad mini 16G wifi - why can't I send SMS txt msg and only imessages?  On the settings, there is no option for "send SMS when imessage not available" like on my iphone.

Why can't I send SMS messages from my ipad mini 16g wifi?

Even when your iPad Mini has a 3G cellular modem onboard, the iPad Mini still can NOT send or receive SMS Text messages.
The 3G modem is only used for a internet data connection and has no software to either send or receive SMS text messages even though the hardware is available.
I can confirm this with the iPad Mini iOS6.1 with 3G cellular modem.
Apple Support has this issue currenlty under investigation - you can follow this issue here:

Why can't I send text messages on my iPad? I can send and receive messages on my iPhone.

    Hi Kathy,
Happy Holidays!  Do you have an iPad with cellular service and a text-messaging plan?
Send messages with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201287
What's the difference between SMS/MMS and iMessage?
SMS/MMS lets you send text messages and photos to other cellular phones or devices. iMessage lets you send text messages and photos to another iOS device over Wi-Fi, without worrying about text-messaging charges (cellular data charges may apply).
What do I need to use SMS/MMS and iMessage?
Here's what you need to use SMS/MMS and iMessage:
SMS/MMS: A text-messaging plan. Contact your carrier for more information.
iMessage: An iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later.
How do I know if my message used SMS/MMS or iMessage?
You can tell which type of message you're sending by the color of the Send button and text bubble.
SMS/MMS: Send button and text bubbles are green.
iMessage: Send button and text bubbles are blue.
How can I link my iPhone number with Messages on my iPad, iPod touch, or Messages for Mac?
When you sign in to Messages with your Apple ID on your iPhone, you link your phone number to your Apple ID. If you then sign in to Messages with the same Apple ID on your iPad, iPod touch, or Mac, Messages will link that device to your phone number as well.
I hope this information helps ....
    - Judy

  • HT5395 why can't i use my imessage on my macbook air

I'm trying to imessage someone from my macbook air to their iphone. but it said i am unavaliable?? why can't i send imessages anymore???

    Hi,
The iMessages account in Messages does not list itself as Unavailable.
AIM, Jabber and Yahoo accounts via their Buddy lists (if shown separately) or the combined List can show as Off line.
The iMessages Account seems to presume the computer will be on all the time and be connected to a Network continually like an iPhone is.
It does not indicate when a Contact is Off Line or Unavailable until you try to send an iMessage when it might pop up an alert to say it was not delivered.  (Most likely when a iPhone has lost a Cell/Mobile service coverage as well as WiFi).
Can you explain what you are seeing and where ?

Why can I not send e-mails from my e-mail account? I can receive e-mails. It is not an iCloud account it is a Bell Aliant account. An account I pay for.
This is the second time in three months this has occurred. Bell Aliant suggested I contact Apple directly as the only option is to remove my e-mail account and reconfigure it. This will mean losing all my files. These files are very important as my account is a business account.
Bell Aliant thought perhaps it is an Apple problem and that Apple may better be able to remedy the situation without me losing my e-mail files.

    Sorry ?
An Internet email provider losses all your Mail and it's Apple's fault ??
Did they explain how the app managed to delete all of your mail and then not even let you have access ?
If that was the case the app should still be able to access the empty folders.
I know there is often blame and counter blame in these situations but there are limits.
