Why can't I transfer my purchased downloads from iTunes from my old laptop to new? The only option seems to be sync my iPod to the new playlist, and sacrifycing everything that's already stored on it.

I am trying to get my old library onto my new computer and the best way for me to do that is take them off of my I Phone 3gs and "transfer purchases" but when I try it the "authorize this computer " shows up and it is already authorized! Usually effects packages are AU plugins that would have no effect on track selection. Interfaces should have no control over what kind of track you can select. I really think something else is going on her maybe something you overlooked.
Did you choose the input channel in the track info pane. Try both channel 1 mono or channel 2 mono. Make sure the track is record enabled.

The Restore erases the iPod's hard drive, so the song files are gone.
It is like an external hard drive (if you set the iPod to Enable disk use), so standard data recovery utilities may (?) allow you to recover erased data, like you might from a regular external hard drive.

I bought a new iMac back in September and finally got around to setting it up. Unfortunately, I am having loads of trouble transferring stuff from my older iMac to the new one. It probably has something to do with the reason why we've replaced it...video RAM failure. I really don't care about settings and applications and most other stuff on the old computer, but I really do want my photo library and if possible, all my saved emails. We've tried transferring info from first set-up of the new computer and the old computer would just freeze and have to be shut down half way through the process. We tried this for HOURS yesterday and just wouldn't work. Both computers were connected via FireWire, but it didn't help. I got so fed up with it that I just manually set up the new computer, but it's a blank canvas. I can get my new e-mail, but don't have my saved emails or my contact list. We tried transferring again after setting up the new computer but that failed as well...the old one froze half way through. Can I just transfer bits and pieces without having to transfer the whole user account and settings?

I stated that I did try to do all of this when I first set up the new computer...I did do the Setup Assistant numerous times but my old computer kept freezing half way through. Even if I did it when I first got the new computer back in Septemeber, I would have had the same issue b/c my old computer has been 'broken' for a while. My old computer can't handle doing too much at once and I think the setup and then migration functions I tried were too much. That's why I was hoping I could use the migration function piecemeal. I wish I could just check off the exact files and folders I want vs. having to choose it at the 'user' level...that's too much for my old computer to have to transfer.

I haven't done this already, because where I had iTunes previously, was on an old laptop that ran as slow as molasses. So, now with a new(er) PC, I just downloaded the newest version of iTunes to the desktop, and selected "transfer purchases", but iTunes gave me some sort of option to select, where I could either only download 'purchased items to play from the iTunes library', or to 'replace everything on the iPad with items already in the iTunes on this PC'.
When I downloaded the latest iTunes on the new PC, it automatically pulled in any music i already had on the computer, but I dont want this to replace everything I've purchased from iTunes, or what I have on my iPad currently.
What do I do to transfer? And, then to sync?
Do I need to disable the iTunes from my old laptop?
How do I ultimately update to the new operating system?

Sound like you need to remove whatever you currently have on the new PC and migrate the library from your old laptop over properly...
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data. If you don't have any Apple devices then see HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

Why can't I transfer music files from i-Tunes to my 30GB ipod?

I have just updated the software on my ipod, and now there seems to be a major problem. When I drag a song from the i-Tunes library to the ipod folder it has a 30% success rate - the other 70% gets the message "attempting to copy to the disk 'name' failed. An unknown error occured (-48)." What on earth does this mean?
NB. yes my preferences are set to manual update
