Why can't I transfer video from iphoto onto an external HD?

Can anyone tell me why I cannot transfer my iphoto video onto an external hard drive from imovie? Basically I am trying to transfer all my video from imovie onto an external hard drive to clear up space, but I cannot seem to find a way to do the video under iphoto. It let's me transfer all other video, but not the video under iphoto.

Have you tried the Export function in iPhoto? Since there is one with choices including Quicktime, I would guess that it has to be rendered first. So, you could try that and save it to your desktop and then copy it over (or, if available, directly to the external).

iTunes and the video-capable iPods support only a limited set of video formats. Your videos need to be in these supported formats. Check this Apple document for details...
    iTunes/iPod video FAQ
Which includes this little tidbit of info:
What video content works with iTunes and iPod?
    iTunes:
Video content purchased from the iTunes Store.
QuickTime and MPEG-4 movie files that end in ".mov", ".m4v", or ".mp4" and are playable in QuickTime Player.

  • I'm new to Mac and I'm having a problem trying to transfer photos from Iphoto onto a external hard drive?

My hard drive says it's locked and I don't know how to unlock it. Also i tried exporting photos but that didn't work either. Thanks so much

No idea - you actaully have to share details
What version of iPhoto and of the OS?
What format is the external hard drive? What is the exact error message you get?what didn't work about exporting?  What exactly are you trying to accomplish?
If you want the iPhoto library to operate on an external drive the way is
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

Why can not I transfer songs from my computer to my iphone?
The songs are on iTunes And I try to add them to my iPhone And it fails!
have tried many times, what am I wrong?
    Thank you in advance!

Are you manually dragging and dropping files in an attempt to move music from your client itunes to your idevice?  And seeing the process hang and potentially locking itunes?
I have been having similar issues, but recently found something that works for my ipad air.  Not sure if this will help you but...
In your itunes client music library:
Right click on one music file
Hover over the Add to Playlist option
Select a playlist from your iphone in the side popup window
See if that helps move the music file over.  If it does, test out the original drag and drop on a new file.  The move to playlist option seemed to clear whatever blockage I had and I'm not dragging and dropping with ease.

    Did you empty the Trash?
What size hard drive & how much free space. You should always have a minimum of 10-15% or more free space?

  • How can I download my photos from iphoto to the external hard disk? thanks!

How can I download my photos from iphoto to the external hard disk? thanks!

This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk or new Mac:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How to transfer videos from iPhoto to iMovie '11

I can't seem to understand how to put my videos from iphoto over to imovie.

    Hi,
Can you say what you have tried?
    I do it this way:
    - after importing the videos into iphoto, close iphoto
    - close imovie if you have it open
    - reopen imovie
you should see a dialog box saying imovie is generating thumbnails. Allow it to do so.
I don't know why closing the applications, then restarting imovie works, but it may help you.

  • Can't export older videos from iPhoto

Hiya, I hope someone can help me out here.
My wife and I have a few years worth of videos that were taken on digital cameras and were imported into iPhoto. The videos from the past few years were taken on our iPhones, but the older videos were imported from our old digital camera. All of our videos play correctly within iPhoto. But I recently tried to export my videos from iPhoto, and the older videos do not play. They are very short - usually about 10K to 500K, and they are zero length. When you press play they just immediately skip to the end. It's almost like they are a photo. This happens in iMovie and when I try to play the video directly out of the finder.
Now, I did my homework on exporting and made sure to chose 'Original'. And all of the exported videos from the past three years (the iPhone videos) or so work just fine. So I don't think I messed up my iPhoto export somehow. Another interesting wrinkle is that I can choose 'locate in finder' for the older videos and find the movie that way and it plays just fine. These videos in the iPhoto library are also the correct size - 10M or so. So I suppose that if worst comes to worst I can just manually copy every single video. But I'd like for the export process to work.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Justin

If you want to find all videos/movies very quickly in iPhoto create a Smart Album with the criteria:  Photo is Movie.

  • How do I move photos and videos from iPhoto onto my iPhone?

Hello! I downloaded all my videos and photos from my iPhone onto our Mac mini. My wife wants to put some of them on her iPhone. How do I get them from iPhoto onto her iPhone? Thanks for the help!!!

You sync them using iTunes. Se:

  • Why do videos show up in photos and why can't i export them from iPhoto for iOS

Somehow, I just don't get it:
If I take a picture on my iPhone 5s, it is saved to 'Pictues' ... sound reasonable.
If I take a video on the same device, it is saved to 'Pictures' ... that's where it gets messy.
If I receive a video on an app like e.g. WhatsApp ... it also get's stored in ... guess what ... 'Pictures'!
Now that's a little bit confusing.
Generally I would like to keep these different types of media (still pictures vs. moving images) in separate spaces, but it seems like that is not possible out of the box, because if go ahead and tab on that share-button in iOS 7 i get prompted to share the videos to various installed apps like e.g. YouTube, Vimeo, Twitter - you name it.
It seems like there is no way to export videos from 'Pictures' to 'Videos', even if you use iPhoto for iOS in the gap.
The only ways (that I found) to get what I want are way to circumstantial:
Either use iPhoto for the Mac to import videos from the iCloud Photostream to the Mac and from there via "Show in Finder" re-import to iTunes' 'Videos'
or use iExplorer (a third party application for the Mac) and export the videos from the iPhone to a temp-folder and from there re-import with iTunes to 'Videos'.
Why isn't there just a simple share-sheet or export label called 'Export to Videos'.
    Why doesn't it just work?
Am I missing out on something?
Is there an easier way to complete this relatively simple task?
Hints and support are very much appreciated!
    Kind regards,
    Chris

Hi. My camera is a Canon 600D. And yes my videos are stored in the Aperture library and they are not referenced. Even then I tried to select all the videos in Aperture and clicked 'consolidate masters' and there was a messge that said all 'none of the files are referenced',... so they didn't need consolidating.
I also tried preferences> export> external video editor > choose > iMovie. And then right click on the video to edit with imovie. Even then the video didn't show up in iMovie. It seems like the only option for me is to import the videos directly to iMovie which means there will be two versions of the same file stored in my computer eating up space.

  • Transfer videos from iPhoto to AppleTV??

    Hi Everyone,
How do I transfer videos imported into iPhoto to AppleTV? I have a Sony Cybershot that takes stills and video. When I import the media from my camera...both video and pictures transfer to iPhoto. I have a smart album created to pull all videos from my videos event. Now, how do I transfer them to AppleTV. I can do this with pictures with no problems. I just sync my picture albums to AppleTV.
    Thanks in advance.
    Michael

    Michael,
Apple TV will only synch photos from iPhoto, not movies. In order to synch movies, you must first convert them to an Apple TV compatible format, then import them into iTunes. It is kind of a pain.
The way I do it is to copy (drag and drop) the movies into iMovie, then use the File > Share, Expert Settings option to export to Apple TV version. Then in iTunes use File > Add to Library and select the files. Once they are in iTunes, you could delete them from iPhoto and/or delete the exported file from your HD, if you are concerned about space. However I would recommend burning them to disc or something for backup.
It would sure be nice if Apple automated this more. If anyone has any shortcuts better than what I am doing would love to hear them.
    Hope this helps,
    Rod
