Why can't I turn my phone on while updating to IOS 8.1.0?

I am trying to update my phone from IOS 8.0.2 to 8.1.0 but I'm not sure if it is updating. There is a red circle with a, eighth note and under it, it says iTunes. (I'm guessing it's the old iTunes logo) then below that there is a small arrow pointing upwards and the lightning charger cable. Is that supposed to happen when updating to IOS 8.1.0?

That screen is telling you the iPhone has entered the recovery mode...you must follow the recovery mode instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 to attach to a computer running iTunes, in summary:

Without more info, here's a wild guess...
Plug it in to power for at least 15 minutes. Then, try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

Since updating, anytime I try to make a phone call it appears that the phone connects but I cannot hear anybody on the other end. All I hear is my own echo?

While I know there are phones that can do this, they really are not powered "off" - they are more in a hybernation state. However, the iPhone has never worked that way. Off on an iPhone means truly powered off - nothing is still running so there is no minimal function left ticking away to wake up the phone and sound the alarm.

You must have had find my iPhone on, or it was locked by your phone carrier.
Call your our cell carrier first.
then log on to a computer to iCloud to erase your iPhone.
NOW... You will be able to setup with a backup.

Don't jump all the way to restoring just yet. Check to make sure there's nothing in the headphone jack, and nothing covering the microphones (including the noise cancelling microphone at the top next to the headset jack)

2. Reset the device. (Same article as above.)
3. Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 (If you don't have a backup, make one now, then skip to the next step.)
4. Restore as new device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137 For this step, do not re-download ANYTHING, and do not sign into your Apple ID.
Test the issue after each step. If the last one does not resolve the issue, it is likely a hardware problem.

Hi Prodigy1,
There is a limit of 8 megapixel, because the Exmor RS lowlight capabilities are optimized around this resolution. So change the resolution to 8MP or lower and it should work.
