  • Why can't I open Windows Media Player videos?

I opened the Tonight Show with Jay Leno web site:
    http://www.nbc.com/nbc/TheTonight_Show_with_Jay_Leno/fruitcakelady/
When I clicked on the link to view videos of The Fruit Cake Lady, I got this message:
The page “NBC.com > Screening Room” has content of MIME type “application/x-oleobject”. Because you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type, this content can’t be displayed.
I’ve tried in vain to find this plug-in. Can anyone tell me where I might get it or how I might get around it?
    I’m using an eMac Power PC G4, 125 GHz, 768 MB RAM, Safari 2.0.3, QuickTime 7.1, Flip4Mac 2.0.2.10
eMac 1.25 GHz Power PC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   768 MB RAM, Superdrive

Google to the rescue! http://www.google.com/mac?q=nbc+videos led me to http://blog.nocertainthing.co.uk/2006/04/04/hacking-nbcs-videos-cont/ which has complete step-by-step instructions to extract the correct address to play the videos.
NBC could have designed their web site to do this in a browser-neutral manner. But apparently they hate anyone who doesn't use IE on Windows.

My purpose for copying to a CD or DVD is so that I can make copies and send to friends and relatives. What is the best way to get these files on a CD/DVD with the right codecs?
The easiest thing to do is to simply tell your friends and relatives to copy the files to their local hard drive before playing them. Your basic problem is that data discs have a limited real time transfer rate. Since you say VLC plays the files fine, I might suspect its player is likely buffering the data while the QT 7 Player is not.
Data discs made for playback directly from the CD or DVD are normally encoded using MPEG-4/AVC (H.264) video with AAC audio. This is a modern codec which has specific settings to re-package the data (i.e., must be encoded using the multipass option and then select the "optimize for CD/DVD" option).

  • Mdworker, system.log, and VLC Media Player

I downloaded some small videos from Google video that were originally from a digital camera but downloading them from google saved them as .mp4 supposedly ipod format. They seem to play fine with VLC Media player however I noticed 2 things while playing them.
    1) The mdworker process loaded down my cpu to about 130% usage for an extended period of time even after closing VLC. From my understanding mdworker is a process usually used by spotlight for indexing? Then why would this process be running? I unmounted all of my external drives and spotlight didn't show that it was indexing anything.
    2) I saw the syslogd process come up in Activity Monitor so it reminded me to check the system.log and I found the log was filling up with entries that look like they are from VLC Media Player. The log is currently over 300MB should I clear it out now or just wait for the maintenance to take care of it?
Here is part of the log:

    Anyone have any ideas?
    George

Encase anyone is interested I got the original AVI videos and had no problems playing them. The CPU was less than 20% and the daily maintenance cleared out the logs. So I guess it was just a strange conversion problem I got from downloading google videos.

  • How do I uninstall Windows Media Player 11 (from Windows XP)

I tried to uninstall Windows Media Player 11 using the 2 methods in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934372/en-us
The 1st method rolled back Windows Media Player 11 , but I want to uninstall it.
The 2nd method gave me the following pop-window:
    Run
C:\WINDOWS\$ntUninstallwmp11$\spuninst refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network,
and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.
I am surprised that Microsoft supplies a product that one cannot uninstall.
I would very much like to uninstall Windows Media Player 11 -
If that is not possible, I could re-install it.
    Thanks for any helo.

  • Audio recording on a flash. recommended to download vlc media player did this. tried to play messages says quicktime does not recognise this format. what to do pleaser

RECIEVED AN AUDIO RECORDING ON A FLASH. PLUGGED IT IN. DOWNLOADED VLC MEDIA PLAYER AS RECOMMEMDED. TRIED TO PLAY.
MESSAGE RECEIVED SAYING QUICKTIME DOES NOT RECOGNISE THIS FORMAT. WHAT TO DO PLEASE.

You could add Perian.  It may help (...or not).
Wait, you received and audio recording and you are trying to use a video player (vlc) to play it?  What kind of file is it?  Does it have a filename extension?  If it is .wmv then you might want to install Flip4Mac.  Then you could play it with QuickTime.

Because eight years ago, when Apple developed it, Steve Jobs was adamant that iOS NEVER EVER EVER be compatible with Flash. That... will never change.
Apple says to use "SkyFire" as your browser if you must view Flash content (which they do not recommend you do with an iPad). It's free in the App Store.

As Kirsti mentioned, getting your OS and any error message will be helpful.  In addition you might want to review this help document which covers the common installation errors:

Because Adobe has never made a version of Flahs that can run on an iOS device like an iPad.
You can try out a Flash supporting Browser like Photon or Puffin and see if you can view whatever you are trying to view through there.
