Why can't i update Itunes on my mac?

I have a new ipod nano7. its my 4th ipod. Suddenly Itunes tells me I need to update my software which I have tried to do but it just shows up on the desktop as Itunes11.1.5.dmg. When I click on that it has two things - Read before you install (which i cannot open) and Install Itunes. no matter what i do clicking on either does nothing. This is so frustrating. When I try and use the nano on our PC most of my music and playlists will not show up. Help! I have spent over 4 hours trying to make this work and i am ready to heave it out the window. Whatever happened to Apple being intuitive and logical.

When I opened iTunes, it reminded me I had an update (10.7). I just ignored it at first because I was in a rush. Later, I wanted to install a song onto my iPod, but because I had already updated it iOS 6 I needed to update iTunes first. When I went to Help>Check for Updates, 10.7 came up but when I clicked download now, the window closed but nothing else. I tried this several times, and closed and reopened iTunes, but I still couldn't get it to work. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

The installer will uninstall the previous version of iTunes prior to installing the new version. (That's actually what happens when you update using Apple Software Update too ... it's just not explicitly flagged as happening during the update process.)
Updating to 10.7.0.21 using an iTunesSetup.exe or iTunes64Setup.exe shouldn't touch your content. By way of an example, I've updated to 10.7.0.21 on two different computers using the downloaded installer files (using an iTunes64Setup.exe on the 64-bit system and an iTunesSetup.exe on the 32-bit system) and didn't lose anything.
(That being said, it's still always a good idea to maintain a current backup at all times, in case of disasters of any sort.)

Had exactly same problem on iPad1. "Unable to check for update. An error occurred while checking for a software update". Been getting this since 3/7/2012. Apple support said probably server overload. Checked these comments and found answer that worked.
-- Reset device
    . Backup your iPhone/iPad to iCloud (very important). Settings>iCloud> Storage and Backup>Backup Now (at the bottom)
    . Erase your device. Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content And Settings
    . Device will reset and wipe itself
    . When it restarts follow the instructions on screen and setup your device.
        You're choices here do not really matter except for restoring From a backup.
        Do not restore a backup, chose "Set up as new".
    . When complete, the Software Update should now work which will install IOS 5.1
    . When installed, Erase the device again (see Above).
    . Once erased, follow the Wizard but this time select that you wish to restore from a backup
        In iCloud. Select the backup that you took in first step.
     . Your device should be back to normal and with IOS 5.1.
This takes time to complete but it worked. Thanks to Glosdeveloper for this. By the way this was an "over the air" update (as opposed to plugged in.

iPad: RAM - 256MB, Processor - 1 GHz Apple A4
iPad 2: RAM - 512MB, Processor - 1GHz dual-core Apple A5
iPad 3: RAM 1024MB, Processor - 1GHz dual-core Apple A5X
Similarily, the iPad 2 did not get Siri and some other features in iOS 6.

iTunes is built into ios and is only a link to the store to buy media, it is not like itunes on a pc and can not be updated outside of an IOS update.
If you are receiving that error message it means itunes is experiencing server problems, your internet connection is experiencing problems or your firewall/antivirus junk is causing problems.

I try to update my ipod touch 4th gen. to the new iOS 4.3 software and the thing loads and after the 7-8 minutes or so, when it says "processing file" a pop up says that the network connection has timed out, and to check my network settings. I've tried several different times and get the same result. My wi-fi is working with all three bars and my computer is also connected to the internet. Have you tried to see if you have the newest version of iTunes? Also, it may help if you try the following steps.
Download iOS from a third-party website (i reccomend http://whited00r.com/) (as this is a full operating system, it is a big download and may take time on a slow internet connection)
Unzip the file.
After unzipping, you should now have a .ipsw file.
Open iTunes
Connect your device and make sure you take a back-up of it first (if you don't all your data will be erased)
Now, while pressing the Restore button, hold down the Alt key (for Mac) or the Shift key (for Windows).
You should now have a window open asking you to choose a file.
Choose the file you just downloaded from whited00r.com
Press OK
It should start replacing your current OS to the new one.
When this finishes, your device will restart
Click restore from (whatever your old device was called)
It will put back all your apps and information
