Why can't I use Microsoft Word in Mavericks?

While installing Mavericks I got a message saying I've got Microsoft Word and Excel on my machine and these will not run with Mavericks installed. So I cancelled the installation. Is this the norm or could there be something wrong with my Microsoft Office program?
Any suggestions appreciated.

You are at the latest version of OS X that will run your version of Office. OS X 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9 (Mavericks) will not work. Depending on your hardware you might want to consider an upgrade to Office 2011. The price is no where near what it was when you purchased your version of Office.

Why can't I use the word "faces" in my url-mapping?

I am trying to get a servlet to work for the url /faces/inloggen but I cannot get it to work. Anything without the word faces in it will work.
I simply want this tag to work:
    <servlet-mapping>
        <servlet-name>LoginServlet</servlet-name>
        <url-pattern>/faces/inloggen</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping> The servlet reads a username and password from a database and should eventually redirect to the correct page.
Does the order in which the mappings appear in the web.xml matter?

Hm, that also means I have no faces context in my servlet, which makes it kinda hard to look in the database for the password.
How should I go about this then? I tried using Lucas Jellema's login module but it has this weird bug which makes every username containing 'OR' impossible to use because of sqlinjection (yes, even if there's no spaces around it).
I figured I could write my own servlet and let it handle my logins but apparently that's not how it's done. Any help would be appreciated!

All database LoginModules that perform authentication based on user and role tables contain this code snippet. The regular expression can be extended to filter even more SQL key words if needed.That's great! How do I change that regexp so that I can use usernames containing 'OR'? This is a real problem for us....

Thanks -- will do. But if I want to save a bunch of old e-mails that are in Entourage, can you think of a way for me to do that? I.e., I could presumably somehow dump Lion (I would guess by trashing my hard drive) and reinstalling everything from a pre-Lion Time Machine back-up, then convert select e-mails to a Word file. I could upgrade Word to Mac 2011 and then reinstall Lion some time in the future. (I assume I'd have to pay for it again, but hopefully I'm wrong.) Thoughts? BTW, I don't actually know the steps involved to delete my hard drive and reinstall from a Time Machine back-up, and will probably call AppleCare for help walking me through that.

If you were using Office 2004 or earlier, use Office 2008 or newer, TextEdit, Pages, OpenOffice, or similar software.

Having reacently downloaded Lion fro my Mac Book Pro, i have now see that office is no longer supported! Why? how can i fix it?

Lion no longer has Rosetta so it is not able to execute PowerPC code. So any PowerPC programs you might have will no longer work on Lion which includes Office 2004.

Try to run the update to Aperture 2.1.4 (download here: Aperture 2.1.4 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL913).
Some members have been running Aperture 2.1.4 with Mavericks, but it has many problems. Try to return Aperture 2.1 as incompatible to whoever sold it to you and ask for a refund.

I can not use microsoft word with osx lion, why is this and what can I do to use my word software?

I just installed Lion after waiting for a while as I use Office regualarly and was hoping that any bugs had been sorted. I didn't read any recent complaints on these forums....
however, all seems ok apart from, every time I open a Word, it opens up every other word doc i've opened that day. not cool when you've opened around 30 documents in a day!
any ideas or solutions??

If you absolutely must have the Microsoft applications, you can purchase and download them from http://microsoft.com/mac.
Free software suites LibreOffice and OpenOffice offer similar functionality (word processing and spreadsheets).
Or you could do worse than look at Apple's Pages, Numbers and Keynote, which should already be installed in your Mac and can export to Microsoft formats if need be.

Office 2004 is a PowerPC app that requires Rosetta to run. Roseeta and thus all PPC aps are not supported on Lion. Further Office 2008's Installer is a PPC app. Office 2008 will run if installed before installing Lion, but you cannot install it from Original Office 2008 Media after installing Lion.
