Why can't I use multiple Apple ID's?

I have a MacBook Pro Retina with two user accounts - one for my girlfriend and one for myself. I have iTunes associated with my Apple ID in my user account, and likewise for her.
I'm trying to help her download her cloud purchases to the MacBook in her account and we hit the "only one Apple ID per computer" error, presumably because I've done the same thing in my user account first.
Have I done something wrong? Is there a way around this?
If not, what's the point of even having user accounts if a MacBook is limited to one truly functional account?

Is your Apple ID one of the old ones which isn't an email address but simply a username? you can't use that to make an iCloud account.
I'm not sure whether you can change the ID to an email address (such as a free GMail address) at http://applied.apple.com - you could try that; if you can't do that you will have to create a new Apple ID for use with iCloud. You can still use the present one for these forums and iTunes.

In our family we have been registering everything (ipods, iphones and computers) all under one apple id. We have made purchases with the family apple id which we have been accessing on multiple devices. With everyones different needs I am wondering about setting up new apple id's for different family members. Can I use multiple apple id's on devices like my iPhone and still access apps/books/music purchased on the family apple id's and if so how do I do this.

Why do you have 3 Apple IDs?
Apple IDs cannot be merged and items bought with one Apple ID cannot be transfered to another. A computer can only be associated with one Apple ID every 90 days for automatic downloads, re-downloading of past purchases or iTunes Match. There is no getting around this restriction.
One computer can be autorized to play content purchased with multiple Apple IDs, though.
My suggestion is to pick on Apple ID and stick with it for the future. Once you have decided, log into one of the other Apple IDs and download every avialble item you bought with that ID to your computer. Wait 90 days. Log into the other ID and do the same thing. Wait 90 days. Finally log into the "main" Apple ID and stay logged in. Keep current backups of all your purchased items on a local, external HDD.

You CAN use the ATV to share more than one iTunes library. Homesharing however require you to use the SAME apple ID on both computer. I have homesharing turned on both my girlfriend and my computer with me signed in on both computers and the ATV. Both itunes librarie show up on the ATV as long as both computer are ON.

So, I received an apple gift card for graduation from college. It was $500 and I wanted to use to buy an iPad.
The person at the apple store said I was not allowed to use a gift card to pay for more than %50 of an iPad.
My question is...WHY? They got their money when someone purchased the gift card, what does it matter?
I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this issue, or knows why this is apple's policy. It just doesn't seem to make sense to me.

That is a very, very big assumption.
Apple could simply check the gift card and see if the purchase of that card was valid. They would have to Do that anyway to verify the amount on it anyway.
Not wanting to pony up the cash could be a sign of naughtiness.

The weirdest things are happening. I just bought my iPad mini, and I can't log in to use FaceTime or iMessage. At one point, it would let me activate my account, but it wouldn't let me make calls; it would display the "call lost" notice and I would try again, and it still wouldn't work. When I exited FaceTime and reentered it , it asked me for my password again, and I entered it, 100% correctly (I double-, triple-, and quadruple-checked) and it said that it was WRONG!!! ***?!?!
