Why can't I use my old Time Machine BU on TC for my new MBP???

This is getting very frustrating as all the literature says I can use a Time Machine Backup on my TC network for my new MBP just purchased.
The "old" TM backup (BU) was working fine with my MBP laptop that I just replaced (BOTH have Lion 10.8.2 updated).
When I turned on my new MPB -
I went through the system setup which took the information from my old one and carried it over - it worked fine
I then went to the TM system preferences and tried to start with the old TM BU which was called MBP13 sparsebundle
I was never given the window "would you like this computer to inherit the backup history from an older Mac".
I did go to the TM system preferences and clicked "select back up disk. But it selected the disk that the sparsebundle was on and then started a brand new backup. Thats not what I wanted to do.
Remember that I use TC with an external Hard Drive to store the TM BU.... I tried both connecting directly to my new MBP as well as through the network.
What I want to do is just inherit that old TM BU and then go forward.
I really could use some specific help here...
Thanks in advance.

You can migrate from one machine to another provided both machines are able to boot from the same version of OS X. But that is not the case for you because the two computers have different hardware. The new hardware requires a special build of Mountain Lion. Your old machine uses a different build making its version of Mountain Lion incompatible with the new computer.
Once there is a new public release of Mountain Lion compatible with both computers, then you can install on each as well as migrate from one to the other.
This is a special situation that only occurs when there is a change in hardware that occurs before the public release of OS X has been updated for the new hardware.

  • Why can't I see my old Time Machine Mackups?

When opening up time machine today I can only see today's backup.  All of the panes that are "behind" today's backup are empty, and the timeline on the right reports only today and now.
But viewing time machine in Preferences I see that the oldest backup is Nov 6, 2013.  But I can't find that one, or any one subsequent to that one.
My basic problem is that an external HD crashed yesterday.  It was in my Time Machine backups, but since I can only see today's backup (i.e., after the disk when missing from the system), I can't recover the data.  I am left reverting to Backblaze restores, which are more of a pain.

  • Exporting to Facebook - why can't I use the old plug-in?

It's nice that iPhoto '09 tried to help us with the Facebook exporter built-in. But why couldn't they make it useful? Why can't I tag people before I upload them? Why can't I upload photos to an existing album? I wouldn't mind so much, but they seemed to have disabled the existing (working) plug-in that was available. So now I have to export the pictures to my desktop and upload them through Facebook. Hmm...doesn't seem too user-friendly.

Exporting to Facebook - why can't I use the old plug-in?
Have you considered asking the author of the plug-in?

Millions upon millions of people do find it very useful
Why can't I tag people before I upload them?
You can - have you watched the iPhoto tutorials?
Why can't I upload photos to an existing album?
You can IF the album was created by iPhoto
Do you have an iPhoto question that one of the iPhoto users who volunteer here might be able to help with?

This is really difficult to the point of not really worth it.
Keep the old TM backups in archive.. and start afresh on the TC.
Time Machine has a different way of backing up on Network drives cf Local drives.
Pondini does have a method to do it... but I would not recommend it.

  • Why can't I use my previous MobileMe email address instead of creating a new one?

Why can't I use my previous MobileMe email address instead of creating a new one?  When signing up for iCloud I'm asked to choose an email address [email protected]  I am already using an @me address via moblileme.  When i input that address it states that that address is already taken.  Try picking a new one.  I don't want a new one I want to use my mobileme address.  How can that be done?

It appears you set up a new iCloud account rather than migrating your MobileMe account over to iCloud.  I migrated everything over this morning and am still using my old MobileMe email address.
Check to see if you can migrate rather than open a new account.

  • Can I use my old iMac as a second screen for my new one?

I have an old iMac (about 4-5 years) that I don't use anymore and a new iMac that I just bought a few months ago.
Can I us my old iMac as a second display for my new one? Its a slow computer now, but the screen is nice and big so it would be nice to be able to keep using it like that.
If yes, what cord(s) would I need to make this happen?
If no, is there any disadvantage to using a non-mac screen for a second display? (I'm a graphic designer, so little things like having the color exact on each screen are very important)
    Thanks for the help!

Is there any way to do it without lag? Right now it works, but its really annoying to have things so slow on the other screen.
Is there any way to hook them up so they work like an actual dual monitor setup (wired connection with no lag)?

  • Why can I no longer backup to Time Machine on OS X Server?

We have a Windows Server and a Mac Server. The OS X Server is basically only for backups from workstations via Time Machine and as a Software Update Server.
I can no longer backup from my MacBook to the Server. If I try to add the location again in Time Machine Prefs, it asks for username and password. I try my AD account, but it fails. Guest doesn't work either. Any suguestions? When I set up the Time Machine service on the server, it was very easy. What did I miss?

You have to enter the name and password of an administrator on the server.

  • How do I copy old Time Machine back-up data onto my new (second) back up drive?

I recently bought a second back-up drive for use with my MacBook Pro (running 10.9.4).
I'm successfully backing up my computer to both drives on a regular basis using Time Machine. (a Seagate drive and a Western Digital drive respectively)
I was wondering if there's an easy way to add the old back-up files from the old drive to the new drive as well. That is to say, I wish I had all the data that precedes my new back-up drive on BOTH drives. There's plenty of space on the new drive.
Again, I'm already running Time Machine successfully to both drives, is it perhaps as easy as connecting both drives to my computer and copying the older dated back-up files over to the newer drive within the Backups.backupdb folder for my profile?
    Thanks for any help!

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
This technique will only work if the volume you're copying to is the same size, or larger than, the one you're copying from.
First, open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Options button. You may have to unlock the settings first by clicking the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Authenticate as an administrator.
Delete the volume you're going to copy from the list of backup destinations. Then turn Time Machine OFF.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased.
If the volume you're copying was encrypted by Time Machine, you may have to unlock it first. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar of the Disk Utility window.
Turn Time Machine back ON and select the new volume as a backup destination. You can also continue to use the old volume, if you wish. The two will be alternated when both are available.
CAUTION: If the volume you're copying is corrupt, as shown by Repair Disk or Verify Disk in Disk Utility, then that corruption will be copied to the new drive. Don't copy data from a corrupt volume on a malfunctioning drive. Put the drive aside and don't use it until you're sure you'll no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and take it to a recycling center. Do the same if the Restore operation fails with "disk errors."

  • Why can't I use my old apps that I purchased on my ipad 1?

I don't understand why I can't use my old apps that "I" paid for.  They all worked fine until I can no longer update my ipad.  When you purchase software for your computer you can keep using it until your computer dies.  Doesn't seem quite right that suddenly your apps are all gone and you can no longer use them.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I have the Ipad 1 which is sufficient for me with the Apps I "had" now each time I update and sync I have fewer and fewer apps that actually work.  I think at least I should have the last updated version of the app.

    Don't update....
Some of these apps may be fixed to be backward compatible.   Until then you will lose apps if you allow updates on the computer and sync to iPad.

  • Ach! Why can't I use my old logic (4.0) plug-ins!

Hi everyone- I need some serious assistance!
As much as I love the new logic, (7.1) and the slammin OSX environment it comes with, all the files that I created in Logic 4 with my 8/8/220 I/O lose all the great plugins as soon as I open them in 7.1 and switch them to the coreaudio interface.
Needless to say, the new files I create just don't sound as good either...
Anyone know how I can use the old plugins with the new logic? Have to say that the new plugins just can't compare!
    Thanks so much!
    Max

Yea, sorry to have to be the one to break it to ya... But we all went through that initial disappointment when we hopped over to OSX.
The good news is, there are some excellent native 3rd party plug-ins around. Here are some that have an excellent reputation:
    http://www.sonalksis.com/
    http://www.elementalaudio.com/
    http://www.tritonedigital.com/products.htm
    http://www.pspaudioware.com/indexen.html?url=http://www.pspaudioware.com/plugins /vintage.html;
Also, you could look into a UAD-1 card, and have the best software compressors on the market today (IMHO).
Check with the manufacturers of your VST's, and if you're a registered owner, many of them offer the Audio Unit version as a free update, or at minimal cost.

  • Can I use my old macbook as a disk drive for my new iMac?

My husband just bought me a new new iMac (yey!) but had assumed it would have a dvd drive (as you do).  It doesn't.  So can I use my old Macbook to upload cds and dvds and somehow import to my itunes on my new computer?

As long as your Macbook is up-to-date.  Go to system preferences>Internet and Wireless>Sharing>check mark CD/DVD sharing.

  • How do i use an old time machine with a freshly installed Mountain Lion

I recently formatted my HD, that was on OS Lion, and installed a fresh copy of OS Mountain Lion. Is  it possible to still use my time machine machine backup (from before i formatted my hard drive) with the newly formatted HD running Mountain Lion? or do i just start from scratch again.
    Thanks for the responses
    MacBook Pro 2010
    OS 10.8 (mountain Lion)

This is the closest thing to my query that I have been able to find. I recently installed ML on my late 2011 MBP. I have tons of backups from Lion and I want to continue backing up ML. I have hesitated to do so as I fear that I will not be able to recover my data and settings in the event that I decide to downgrade to Lion. If I was to downgrade back doe Lion; could I use a ML TM backup to recover my files and settings?

  • Why won't trash clear out old time machine folders?

I have moved older folders into trash and when I click on Empty secure trash, it loads, gives me the banded progress, the goes away, never giving me the solid band that it is clearing out trash.
    Any suggestions?

You're not supposed to delete folders from within Time Machine. Time Machine uses very specific journalling and indexing and if you delete folders in there you run the risk of losing all access to your backups.
That being said try emptying the trash non-securely. If that is not visible as an option go into Finder -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck Empty Trash Securely.
