Why can't I walk into an Apple store and buy OS software?

I tried buying OS X in both of Palo Alto's Apple stores today and nobody could sell me a copy of anything. Leopard is "discontinued" (wait for 2 weeks for it to come through snail mail) and Lion does not exist on DVD for sale... only on new machines or as a download, which means you have to have OS software in the first place. This is nuts.

Depends what OS you want and it depend upon the machine you have what you can or cannot run on it.
If you have a Intel processor machine, the best and most stable is Snow Leopard 10.6.
Leopard 10.5 if you have a PowerPC Mac, G4 or G5
Lion 10.7 the latest OS, was just released and has quite a few issues and lots of new strangness, it can be downloaded and installed for $29 online if you have Snow Leopard installed first and updated to 10.6.8. Then Rosetta programs won't work and you need a 64bit Intel processor, not 32 bit.

If you are trying to buy the ipad air, they're new, so I know you know there are no 'deals' to be had. But if you're thinking of buying an ipad 4, please consider this which I just sent to another poster with a refurbed ipad question. I wrote -

After the intro of the ipad Air, the ipad 4 refurbed price came down another $30.00. I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

Having it engraved wont' stop it from being stolen. All it might do is make it easier to identify if it is.
The best way to work towards preventing theft is to be smart with your device. Don't ever leave it laying anywhere unattended....you're in the library, need to take a bathroom break, don't leave it on the table, put it in it's case/bag and take it with you or leave it in the custody of a friend.
Be aware that it is a target for thieves and treat it accordingly. Treat it like you'd treat your purse or wallet.

Somehow I have deleted a very important folder. It isn't in my Trash and is nowhere to be found. Ive even taken it into the Apple store and the guy has said that it is there but he can't retrieve it. Can it be retrieved?

There is recovery software (do a Google search). When you delete something, the directory pointer is erased, not the data. HOWEVER, the system will use any available free space. If the data was not overwritten, you MIGHT be able to recover it. I have not used recovery software, so I have no recommendation.

You can exchange for an out of warranty exchange iPhone 4 at a price of $149 in US
you get an as new iPhone 4 and the Apple genius bar take your "bits"
Apple are about to offer a trade in programme in the US but I believe the donor iPhone must be in full working order to qualify

Apple offers an out of warranty or not covered under the warranty "repair" price, which pays for an exchange at a discounted price off the full retail sales price.

They can fix it at the Apple Store. I wish you could get it fixed for free, but the warranty doesn't cover accidents like this . It sounds like you understand this, I just want to make sure you know.
