Why can't itunes locate my music files when they are there?

I think that this happened when I checked off both "keep iTunes media folder organized" and "copy files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library."I had all of my files located at C:\Users\Beata\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media   and then I noticed that itunes made folders for all of of my music files because I have checked off the keep iTunes media folder organized. Ever since then, itunes can't find all of my files but only some of it and I don't want to go one by one to locate all of the songs. All of my songs are located in the same location which is C:\Users\Beata\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music  I changed it to this location because all of my song files are located there and the place where it was located before, I didn't find the song files on there. I also noticed that itunes would oragize and create folders for my songs in the my music library and I thought that was the reason why itunes couldn't find the files because they were in the wrong location so I moved all of those folders to C:\Users\Beata\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music  So, is it because all of my files are in folders since itunes organized them? All of my files are in album, artist, and song title folders. Where should all of these folders be located at? Also, iTunes creates multiple folders that have the same name and should I just leave the folders be or organize them myself because I have folders that have the same exact name as in the artist and title but it has different song files in the folders. Should I combine the files into the same folder that have the same artist or should I just leave it that way?  Please ,I really need help as I have tried almost everything.

  • Why can't itunes locate the music file?

Lately when I put songs or albums that I've downloaded it won't let me drag the songs into itunes or the folder so I have to put each song into it by making it open up into it and when I do that about a minute or two after, itunes says that it is unable to locate the file. I never had this problem before and I have deleted itunes and reinstalled it and it is still continuing to do this.

Can I just move my movie files and leave my music files where they are?

Yes, but bear in mind if you move the movie files, any files, from the iTunes media folder iTunes will not know where they are and therefore cannot access them. It will be up to you to tell iTunes were they are in order to use the files.

  • Can't see my buddies' status messages when they are available.

So, I don't know if anyone knows how to fix this, but I've already checked the prefs, and there's nothing in there about this.
If you have any idea how I can fix this, please please let me know.
I can only see people's messages when they are away. I can also see the little arrow when they have the message set to Itunes, but the song doesn't show up, only the little arrow which connects you to the Itunes music store.
That's pretty much all I can tell you. So please help me if you can.

    This is ridiculous.
No it isn't. It's just mildly inconvenient because a fun feature of iChat is temporarily offline.
I wish Apple would buy AOL.
Why? Because AIM status messages are that vital to you, or because you'd like to see Apple waste cash on a redundant, failing dinosaur like AOL?

  • HT1751 Why can't iTunes handle a music library on an external drive?

I put all my music files on an external drive and imported them into iTunes. So far so good. The first time you run iTunes while the drive is disconnected - all your songs suddenly have that dreaded exclamation point next to them. Yes, while the drive is connected, I can still go to any song and double-click it to play; but the vast majority of songs stays "exclamated" and greyed-out. Shuffle ignores them. Even if I use some method to re-recognize all my songs, next time I open iTunes without first attaching the drive, it'll all go down the drain again.
Apple - this MacBook air is great but it only comes with 256 GB of built-in storage. I HAVE to use an external drive in order to have my music library. Why can't the MacBook recognize the drive, remember it, and know when it's connected and when it isn't?

If you mistakenly open iTunes with the drive disconnected, close iTunes, connect the drive, open iTunes, then visit iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and reset the media folder to the external drive.
Better yet is to move the iTunes library folder into the root of the external drive as <Device>/iTunes, then connect to it by holding down option as you start iTunes. Once iTunes "knows" your library is on the external drive it will complain of a missing library when you try to start with the drive disconnected. Cancel the warning, connect the drive, start iTunes.
For maximum portability you should set the media folder to <Device>/iTunes/iTunes Media and consolidate the media to that folder. You should then backup the drive to another for security.

  • Why can't I convert a music file to a podcast?

Just updated to iTunes 11.  When I try to convert a music file into a podcast (it is a 3 hour file) it changes it right back to music?  Is this a bug and is there another way to do it?
    Thanks!

For the time being it worked making it an audiobook, though now I can't use the new Podcast app for it....lame!

  • On the iPhone 5/5s, can you hear the other person properly when they are lying down?

When I use the iPhone 5s while lying down in bed, the other person is unable to hear me.  When someone who is using the iPhone 5s is lying down in bed, I cannot hear them.
Is this a known issue?  Has anyone else experienced this issue?  Does anyone know what causes this issue?  I actually used to have this same issue with the HTC One, and I was under the impression that it had to do with the accelerometer of smartphones.  I do not know of any other difference between smart phones and normal phones.
It's rather annoying, such a basic feature of a PHONE product to be able to talk and hear clearly.  Major fail, Apple.  For this alone, I may consider switching to another phone.
I have found other comments from iPhone 5 users who have the same issue:  http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/11/29/iphone-5-review/
    MICROPHONE
I don’t know if it’s because I have big hands or what, but there many times when people on the other end of the phone can’t understand a thing I’m saying. Specifically, any time I lay down flat on my back, the iPhone 5′s microphones seem to go especially bad. A few times, it’s gotten so bad that the people on the other end of the line hung up because they couldn’t deal with it.

Please Apple.  Fix this significant bug/defect in your product in your next software update.  I know this is a software issue probably related to the Accelerometer detecting that the phone is not upright and then turning off the receiver.  Not sure why you would even want to do that.
It is ridiculous that the iPhone cannot perform the most BASIC function of voice calls.  After all, that is what you buy the phone for... the texting, internet, applications are all bonus.  Phones are used while lying down, upside down, lying on the side, etc.  You are basically hurting yourself and your customer base with this significant design flaw.  Think about all the couples talking to their significant others when they're lying in bed first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening they are long distance.  Think about hospital patients who want to speak with their families.  Think about the homeless on the streets with their iPhones lying down calling people to give them money (or not...).
Anyway, you get my point.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fix it.  I only recently changed from being an Android user to an iPhone user... this is seriously my biggest gripe with your product.

  • Finder de-selects files when they are locked/unlocked

I have several encrypted disk images that I use to store various personal info on:  financial data, logins/passwords, health info, etc.
Whenever I update the content on any of them I make a copy of the .dmg file, then rename the copy with the date and time in the filename.  For example, if I have a test.dmg file, when I update content in it, I would make a copy and rename the copy like test_201401051459.dmg.  That way I have a series of backups of each iteration of the encrypted disk image file.  (I've had encrypted disk image files get corrupted in the past, so this is a simple way to make sure I can open at least one of the previous backup files if necessary.)  I also "lock" each dated copy of the .dmg file to prevent accidental deletion.
At the end of each month I move all of the dated backup .dmg files to an "_Old Data" folder.  In order to do that, I select all the .dmg files I want to move into the subfolder, then right-click (or ctrl-click) on them and -- continuing to hold the Ctrl key down -- I click on "Get Summary Info" to open a single "Get Info" dialog for all of the files so I can unlock them before I move them (if I don't unlock them, then Finder will make copies instead of moving them).  As soon as I de-select/uncheck the "Locked" option in the "Multiple Item Info" dialog, Finder de-selects all of the selected files in the Finder window and also narrows the column they're displayed in (I always use Column View in Finder windows).  This forces me to manually re-widen the column so I can see the entire file names, and manually re-select all of the files so I can move them into the sub-folder.
This is changed behavior from Snow Leopard (from which I upgraded to Yosemite).  In Snow Leopard, Finder left things alone.  It didn't decide all on its own that files should be de-selected and that column widths should be narrowed to what it thinks is right.  This turns a relatively simple operation into an unnecessarily-more-complex operation.  Pure PITA.

  • Why can't iTunes find the music from an external hard drive?

I moved my music to an external hard drive to free up space on my old laptop.  Since I moved to a new laptop, iTunes never seems to find the music.  I have to go through and manually select a song for it to find it one and then it says should it use this to find the rest of the songs.  Then it crashes.  I have reinstalled iTunes tonight with no real improvement.  I want to be able to create a playlist to upload to my new iPad as well as updating music on my iPod but I can't do any of it.  Please, any advice!

Has the new laptop given the external drive a different drive letter?
The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. (Due to a bug in iTunes 12 you currently have to say No twice!) Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

  • 3500 songs in iTunes with exlamation points - iTunes can't locate files but they are there!

    Hi,
Since a few weeks, 3500 of my 10000 iTunes songs have exclamation points. When I try to play a song, I get an error message stating that iTunes can't find the song. If I search for it, it's on my Mac. So the files are on my hard drive, except that iTunes can't find them.
As it's weeks of work to manually relink the songs to their location on my hard disk, is there anybody who could help me with this?
    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi Esteban
As you see the exclamation mark represents a missing link to the file and the subsequent unable to play the track.
If you select one of those files and look at the info(CMD I or Get Info) and go to the Summary tab that identifies where iTunes thinks it was stored.  From here you can navigate in finder to that location or do a search for what iTunes states the filename is e.g. (01 Track 01.mp3).
So either the file is deleted, renamed or moved.
    Regards
    Mark

  • I plugged my iPhone 4s into a 2nd computer I own. Why can't iTunes transfer my music to my iPhone?

Plugged it into my MacBook, updated the iTunes software.  But I can't transfer any of the music without syncing!  I tried to drag files to the iPhone but it doesn't let me.

Oh, and the computer is authorized.

  • HT1473 Why won't iTunes import my WMA files when I add a folder?

I had been using iTunes on a Windows 7 machine, and it would import WMA files with no problem.  I decided to move to iTunes on my MacBook Pro, and iTunes will only import the files that are already in mp3 format.  It just ignores the files that are in WMA format.

The Mac version of iTunes doesn't convert WMA files. Use a third party tool or convert them on a Windows system.

  • I can no longer download and save files. They are now saved with a ".part" suffix that I can not use or open. What happened, I used to do this all the time?

Downloads seem to be happening normally at first but the file shows up with a file extension of ".part" that I can not use or open. If I refresh the folder where it was downloaded to, it disappears as though it wasn't there at all.
I used to do this and it just yesterday started to give me problems. It doesn't seem to matter what file type I do this with as PDF, MP3 and EXE files have all shown this problem.
    Please help!

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.<br />
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.
