Why can't my AirPort Express (A1084) see my AirPort Extreme network?

I've done lots of searching and it seems that the answer is that it simply can't, but that doesn't make sense to me and I just want to make sure before I completely give up. Specifically, what I'm trying to do is get my old AirPort Express to join the network I have set up with my new AirPort Extreme (A1521) and then pass the signal via ethernet cable to my Xbox. When I try to set up the old Express in AirPort Utility (v5.6) and it asks me to choose a network to join, it doesn't see any (not even neighbors' linksys, etc). Am I doing something wrong? Is there a setting that I need to change in the way my Extreme is set up? I was hoping that since, according to Apple literature, the Extreme is compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n devices, that the old Express would see it and just run off the G signal and this would work, no?

Specifically, what I'm trying to do is get my old AirPort Express to join the network I have set up with my new AirPort Extreme (A1521) and then pass the signal via ethernet cable to my Xbox
The A1084 (and A1088) versions of the AirPort Express do NOT have this type of capability.
You need a feature called ProxySTA which was added to the A1264 Express, when Apple introduced the product in 2008.
The current A1392 version also incorporates this feature.
See this article for more information on ProxySTA, a special feature on the 802.11"n" version of the Express devices:

  • Why can't my Airport express be found by the airport utility?

Why can't my airport express be seen by the airport utility?

    I have the same problem.
I have a Mac Pro OSx10.7.5, a Netgear router, A 1st gen Airport Express Model A1264 set up in Bridge Mode w/ LAN cable as Network 2 for Airplay, the iPad palys music and connects to the internet great through it. I want to extend Network 2 to another set of speakers in another room so I bought another AE A1264. "Like new"
So far I cannot get the computer to see the new AE at all. I have tried it wired to the router, wired to the Mac, wireless near the 1st AE, I've reset it and restarted multiple times. It just isn't showing up at all. ZIP. I get a slow blinking yellow light.
The Airport Utility "Configure Another"comes up with a Mac address I haven't seen before. I don't know if it's the new AE or not. In any case none of the passwords including "     " for a password work. It spins and I get an error message that "An error occured while reading the configuration"
Even when it was new the first AE took some doing to be seen by my Mac which was plenty annoying since it should just pop up but it did eventually connect via LAN. Once I configured it it worked on my network.
These things have been a real pain. Please advise.

  • I can see my airport extreme network, but none of my devices (vista, ipad, iphone, ipod) can connect to it. Why?

I have set up my apple aiport extreme after moving and I can see the airport extreme light is green and I can see the airport extreme network name, but when I select the network, the device cannot connect to it. No error message appears, the device simply is in a constant state of trying to connect to the network.
I can easily connect to the non Airport Extreme network.
    Can anyone help?

Try factory resetting, it often helps when changing location.

  • I changed my Airport Extreme network name and password, now I can't access my Airport Express speakers.  Help please.

I changed the network name and password associated with my Airport Extreme and now my system is not recognizing my Airport Express speakers.
Can someone help me get my speakers and sound system back online?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You will need to think in reverse here.
Change the network name and password back to where it was on the AirPort Extreme and get things working that way.
Then, change the name and password on one AirPort Express, then the second. Both Expresses will be blinking amber at this time. Power them off.
Now, change the name and password on the AirPort Extreme.
Power up both Expresses and they will now join the AirPort Extreme network correctly since you have programmed them with the new network name and password.

  • How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme? My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured" and my AirPort tool on my PC will not permit me to add my new Airport Extreme network (no network names to choose from)

How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme?
I have a PC running with Win7 and just replaced my Jensen With a brand New Airport Extreme.
I have set up the Airport Extreme to the internet, Iphones and Ipads and it work as it should.
I have downloaded latest Version of Airport tool on my PC. In addition i have downloaded the airport tool for Ipad.
I have reset one of my airport Express and it now shows up both on the Ipad and on the PC airport tool.
My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured."
I have wired the airport Express to my Ethernet to be able to "see it" on my Airport tool.
My AirPort tool on the PC will not permit me to add the airport Express to my new Airport Extreme network (no network names on the drop-down list to choose from). I wished for an easy set-up, but nothing seems to be plug and play as the Commercial says.. can you please help me?

    Hi
    Thanks for Swift reply.
Yep - I in fact have two A1088 and one A1264
I actually bought the new router because the Jensen
router always lost connection to the Airport Express after some hours or days. I
always needed to restart my Jensen to play music and that was driving my wife
mad. The hope was that the Extreme should fix this. Both A1088 have been set up
to only stream music to two of my stereo amplifiers from my PC’s Itunes library.
    Are the A1088 now useless?
The A1264 has been set up to feed internet into a Denon Reciever that needed Ethernet cable.
    Please advise
    Regards
    Sigve

  • G5 can't recognize Airport Extreme

Hope someone can help. I tried to install an Airport Express to my existing Airport Extreme network so I could play music through powered speakers in another part of my home. I screwed up the installation, and while trying to backtrack, my Airport Extreme network was deleted inadvertently. Now there is no network listed at Internet Connect. Neither Airport Set-up or Airport Admin Utility sees the base station so I can set up a new network and start over. When using Airport Set-up, I receive the error message: No new Airport networks were found." Any ideas will be appreciated. Nothing seems able to "see" the base station. I've reset the AP Extreme with the reset button and by unplugging its power - neither help. All cables are in place, the unit is in the same room.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.1)   Airport Extreme

Determned that the base station had "died" and replaced it with a new one; everything is working fine now. Not sure what caused the demise of the base station though.

  • PROBLEM: Trying 2 add an AIRPORT EXPRESS to an already existing AIRPORT EXTREME network

I'm trying 2 add an AIRPORT EXPRESS to an already existing AIRPORT EXTREME network in my home.
I see the EXPRESS in ARPT UTILITY but when I click on "CONTINUE" or "MANUAL", the only option I'm given is to SWITCH networks, which I do not want to do.
I am using a MACBOOK PRO (MAC OS X 10.6.8)
Can someone offer me help with this?
    Thanks!

Hi, I have a similiar setup.  When you click onto the express, and it asks you to switch networks, it's not actually asking you to "change" networks.  It's just actually switching to the xpress.  When the xpress comes up, you'll input the name of your existing network, which you set up and named for the extreme.  You'll have to change the extreme to "participate in a network", which is what you'll also do for the xpress.  In the extreme under the WDS tab, you'll input the wds mode as "wds main".  And then put a check mark in the "allow wireless clients".  Where it says wds remotes, you'll input the the airport id's for the xpress's.  In each of the xpress's, you'll set up as participating in a wds network.  In the xpress's, under the wds tab, you'll set the wds mode to remote, and check
mark in the allow wireless clients.  You'll have to input the airport id of the extreme in the wds main block.  Under the internet icon on top, in internet conect tab for connect using: airport (wds), connect sharing: off (bridge mode).
Remember to insure that the express's show the same channel as the extreme, if you're using 802.11n (80211b/g compatible).  Of course the security that you decide to use should also be the same.

  • Cannot add Airport Express to Airport Extreme network

I keep getting the message "There was an error setting up this Apple wireless device for WDS. Quit Airport Utility and try again." So I've tried a few times with different reset/reboot/configuration changes all to end up with the same message at the end. This problem seems to almost exactly coincide with my update to 10.5.8. At least the Extreme is finally playing nice after I restored it to the factory settings and updated it to v.5.7. This is really frustrating since I pipe my music downstairs through this Express and feed the TiVo.

I'm trying to do the same thing - extend my wireless network from my Airport Extreme to 2 more Airport Expresses. I don't have a solution yet but hopefully between us both and the help of others we can get it.
First thing I realized - I needed to go to settings on Airport Extreme and in the 'Wireless' tab check 'Allow this network to be extended'.
Instead of WDS, I plugged in the new Express and in the 'Wireless' tab chose 'Extend my wireless network' and then chose my Airport Extreme network. Still not there, as for some reason Airport Utility no longer picks up the extremes even though I've got them plugged in right here. Perhaps a reboot after this post and we'll see what happens.
One question to all - does it matter if any/all of these wireless base stations have encryption set to WPA or WEP? Would it affect the Extreme's ability to connect to the Express'?

  • Extending Airport Extreme network with Airport Express using WDS

I have been having some trouble using WDS between an Airport Extreme and Express, with the Extreme acting as the internet router in the network.
Both devices have been updated with the lastest firmware.
I am using Airport Utility 5.5.1
    *Airport Extreme Configuration*
    *Wireless Tab*
Wireless Mode: Participate in a WDS network
Allow Network to be extended: Checked
    Radio Mode: Auto
    Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
Channel Selection: Manual (Same as my Express)
    *WDS Tab*
    WDS Mode: WDS Main
    Allow Wireless Clients: Checked
WDS Remotes: (MAC of my Airport Express)
    *Airport Express Configuration*
    *Wireless Tab*
Wireless Mode: Participate in a WDS network
    Channel: (Same as my Extreme)
    Network Name: (my network name)
    Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
Allow this network to be extended: unchecked
    Radio Mode: 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible)
    *WDS Tab*
    WDS Mode: WDS Remote
    Allow Wireless Clients: checked
WDS Main: MAC of my Airport Extreme
I think that covers the pertinent stuff. If there's anything else that might be useful, please just say so.
So, the Extreme is green-lit, working fine. Wireless clients can connect to it just fine. On the Wireless Clients page the MAC of my Express is showing up, with a type of WDS listed. It does not, however, show up under the DHCP clients section.
The Express is yellow-lit. Sometimes after a setting change it goes green for a minute or so, then back to yellow, reporting a WDS Error ("the AirPort Wireless device is set up as part of a WDS network, but no other AirPort wireless devices were found").
The Airport Express is ending up with an ip address of 169.254.49.198 (an automatic private). It seems it's not getting an ip from the Extreme's DHCP.
Do I have some sort of authentication issue here? Honestly I'm totally baffled.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Would the routers' logs be of any help?
    Thanks

Wait, just did a bit more reading. Am I correct in assuming now that the "Extend a network" option will function as a wireless repeater, with no ethernet connection to the main router required
Yes. This will provide much better wireless performance...and...its much easier to configure.
On your AirPort Extreme, open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Update to save settings
On the AirPort Express, open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network (hold down the option key when you click on the selection box if you do not see this setting)
Wireless Network Name = Click on the selection box and name of your AirPort Extreme network should appear
Check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as the AirPort Extreme network
Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme network
    Confirm Password
    Update to save changes
A good starting location for the Express is a point that is about 1/2 to 2/3 the distance from your AirPort Extreme to the area that needs more coverage.
The ethernet port on the Express is also enabled, so you can connect an ethernet device if needed. Post back to let us know how things are working.

  • Can I use AirPort extreme to play musik on my sterio

Can I use AirPort Extreme to play music from Itunes, on my sterio? Or is it just AirPort Express.?

Express only. Only the Express has a audio jack.

  • How to extend the range of my Airport Extreme network by adding an Airport Express

How to extend the range of my Airport Extreme network by adding an Airport Express?

You have to make sure that the AirPort Express is in Factory Default Settings. If it is straight out of the box, it is ready to be configured.
The instructions that I will provide are for using AirPort Utility 6.0, which you have.
Locate the Express in the same room as the AirPort Extreme for the configuration. Power it up and allow a full minute for the Express to display a blinking amber light.
Make sure that the wireless is turned on your Mac
Open AirPort Utility 6.0 and look at the small rectangle in the upper left hand corner of the display. It should now read something like "Other AirPort Base Stations (1)"
Click on the rectangle, and then click on the AirPort Express xxxxxx listing
AirPort Utility will take a minute or two to analyze the settings on your network and then suggest that  the Express be configured to "Extend" your wireless network.
Edit the Base Station name to your liking, then click Next in the lower right hand corner
Allow a full minute or two let AirPort Utility do its work
When you see Setup Complete, click Done at the lower right of the window.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is approximately half way between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage.
    You should be in business.

  • New to wireless Cant get airport express to join airport extreme network

So... I just got this MBP yesterday along with airport extreme and airport express. I got the base station set up i just cant get the express to connect for the life of me... help anybody? Everything is in range i know that for a fact. I just cant get it configured and i already looked on the airport express support page and followed the instructions and i still can't get it. :-/

Factory reset your Airport Express (AX).
    Resetting AirPort Express
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
Connect to the Airport Extreme Network
Use the Airport Assistant to configure a new base station and configure the AX to join an existing wireless network (either use client mode, only extend your network if you need to do so).

  • Can i use airport extreme as wifi range extender in conjunction with a Linksys AE4500 router

can i use airport extreme base station as wifi range extender in conjunction with a Linksys AE4500 router

If you are trying to "extend" using wireless only......Apple tells us that their "extend a wireless network" feature is designed to only work with other Apple routers.
So, in order to use your AirPort Extreme as an extender, you would need to have another Apple router.....an AirPort Express, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Extreme as the main base station.
I haven't tested the specific Linksys model that you have, but have owned and worked with several other Linksys models, none of which were compatible with Apple for the purpose that you ask about....so I would have to say that it is extremely unlikely that your model would be compatible with the AirPort Extreme.

  • 17" flat panel Mac can no longer get on my Airport Extreme network

My 17" G4 flat panel iMac can't get on my Airport Extreme network. It has been on the network for years. All of a sudden I can't get on my own network. The Airport extreme uses a WAP2 Security password. Everything else in my home is on this network ie. Blu-Ray players, Wii, Nintendo DS's, MacBook, Apple TV. The G4 doesn't even have WAP2 as an option! Where did the option go? I really don't wanna set up the network again with a WEP password(That's an option on the G4) and have to reset everything. What happened?

There were two 17" flat-panel G4 iMacs. The earlier of the two (Part# M8812LL/A) had an optional AirPort Card. This card only supports 802.11b and either the WEP or WPA security standards. It does not WPA2. This may be the reason the G4 is not able to connect to your wireless network if you have it configured for WPA2 Personal.
You will need to reconfigure the AirPort to use the "WPA/WPA2 Personal" option.

  • Can you use airport extreme as a bridge to netgear wdnr4500 wireless router

can you use airport extreme as a bridge with a netgear  wndr4500 router.I need to extend my wireless connections to the other side of the house

can you use airport extreme as a bridge with a netgear  wndr4500 router.
This is extremely unlikely. The AirPort Extreme can provide this function with other Apple routers, but as far we know, it is not compatible with products from other manufacturers for this purpose.
Suggest that you use a Netgear product for the best chance of compatibility.
