Why  can't my G4 detect second monitor!?

I just hooked a 2nd monitor to the VGA port but can't get it to work. The primary monitor is hooked to the DVI and works fine.
I opened "Displays" and clicked "Detect monitor" several times. It won't find it.
What else can I do?
thanks!

That oval connector is an ADC, similar to DVI but with power and USB signals added. It can run certain Apple displays (mostly flat panels) that do not have their own power supplies.
On both of those connectors (ADC and DVI) you will see that at one end, there is a plus-shaped area, surrounded by 4 pins at the corners. Those pins are reserved for VGA signals. The adapter Apple put in the box when it shipped connects to those pins on the DVI connector, and extracts them into a 15-pin three-row VGA connector.
It is very difficult to find a VGA extractor for ADC. But for about US$35, you may be able to find a short cable that adapts ADC computer to DVI monitor (by throwing away the power and USB signals and swapping the pins around). \[Belkin makes one, but it may be out of production.] This would allow you to move your DVI monitor to the ADC port, and then you could use a VGA extractor to get a VGA output (from the DVI port) for your second monitor.

Why can't I set a second alert on my iPad calendar app? I can set two alerts per event on the iPhone version, but the iPad version doesn't show the option that pops up after entering a first alert on the iPhone.

You are talking about the forward, back, mail and trash can icons in the Notes App - correct?
I've gone through restarting it and followed the instructions from the person last week.
Have you restarted the iPad - is that what you mean? Have you quit and then restarted the app? Quit the app, and restart the iPad. It's worth a try.
Double tap the home button and your recent apps will appear at the bottom. Hold down on the Notes app icon until it begins to wiggle. Then tap the minus sign to quit the app. Then tap the screen. Now restart the iPad.
Carolyn explained this above (restart) but here it is again....
Hold down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and slide to shut off. Hold down on the sleep button until the Apple logos appears then let go of the button and the iPad will restart. See if that helps.

  • HP Phoenix computer can't detect second monitor

    HI,
I have used this for a while (18 months) on one monitor and wanted to extend the desktop to a second monitor - but the system fails to detect a second monitor when it is plugged in.
It has an AMD Radeon 6850 with two DVi slots - both monitors work as I can swap them over.  But neither the auto detect (HP Catalyst) or the manual detectoption  show up a second monitor.
I have updated the ADM driver, restarted etc etc........ not sure what else to try.  Any suggestions?
    thanks
    Mike

  • Can't get palettes onto second monitor

I am using Photoshop CS4 and I just upgraded to Mavericks. When I opened PS I discovered that all the palettes that normally reside on a second monitor are now all on the same monitor with my PS document and I can’t drag them to the second monitor. It seems that PS does not recognize there is a second monitor there. I can drag documents and palettes from other applications onto this monitor so it appears to be only a PS issue. Is anyone else having this problem and is there a solution?

This is probably a silly question, but have you rebooted your Mac?  It's silly to ask because most likely the OS upgrade required a reboot, but hey, I don't know the specifics.

  • Can't scroll-select on second monitor

When using Safari on my Macbook Pro on a second monitor, I can't select more text in a browser window than what shows on the screen. In other words, when I select and drag, the windows doesn't scroll.
Anyone else have that problem, and any resolution? Other applications, including Firefox, work in the second monitor without apparent problem.

Hmmmm. Looks like nobody has heard of this problem.

  • Cannot detect second monitor

    Hi Everyone.
    I am teaching on a Power Mac G5 10.5.7
    Processor 2x2.66 2GB memory
I have a projector hooked up as the 2nd monitor. Sometimes when I come into teach the projector doesn't get a signal from the computer.
I've had our IT department out many times and sometimes we get it to work by switching around the two monitor cables into their slots in the back of the tower. Two weeks ago we swapped out actual monitor cards on the mother board.
But we are still having issues of the projector not getting a signal. I'd say it's 50/50. Some days it works... some days it doesn't. When the set up does work it's works great.
I've tried everything. I've tried starting the projector first then the computer and vice-versa. I've tried selecting detect displays from System Preferences.
The projector seems to be working. It's projecting an image onto our screen but it's simply the logo and there is an error saying "no signal."
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I tried plugging a second monitor with a *Mini Display Port to DVI adapter*... work 1 out of 100
Tried with a 23'' Cinema Display, With DVI Cintiq Display and 32'' LCD TV (1280x768), everytime with the same problem, the MBP screen blinks (blue) but the second monitor stay with the message "NO SIGNAL" and nothing happens, Macbook don't detect, no option to change resolution, tried plug/unplug (sometimes with the computer off), restarted (computer and monitor) several times, reseted PRAM more then once, changed from 9400 to 9600M and so on...
    I'm going crazy!
    Now I have two options:
    1. in case of a *driver issue* (wait for Apple for an update solution)
    2. in case of a *hardware issue* (use the Apple 1 yr warranty and stay a long time without my work machine, waiting repair, since it's a custom MBP)
I only have to be sure wich case is true.

  • U430 Touch doesn't detect second monitor

I recently got a U430 but, when I connect it to my Dell S2240L monitor using an HDMI cable, the U430 doesn't detect it.  I've tested the monitor and cable.  The display driver that came on the machine is from Intel (version 10.18.10.3379).  The supported display driver listed on the Lenovo site is also from Intel but for an earlier version (10.18.10.3277).  I've read a number of threads about a second monitor not being detected.  Hase anyone else seen this?

    Hi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that your U430 Touch Laptop is not connecting to the External Monitor, the issue should resolve if the latest display driver is installed in the computer, below are the link to automatically scan the computer and install the relevant driver from Intel and Nvidia:
    Intel display driver auto detect
    NVIDIA graphics driver auto detect
    Hope this helps!!!
Do post us back if the issue persists

I'm trying to set up dual monitors on my company's shipping computer but Windows won't detect the second monitor. Both monitors are connected using a VGA port, but the second monitor is connected to a DVI-D port via a an adaptor. • Can't put Icons on Second Monitor

All of a sudden I cannot move icons from the desktop on my main monitor to the desktop on my secondary monitor. There's no problem putting application windows on the second monitor but icons just slide back to the main monitor's desktop. I tried restarting and that didn't solve it. Has anyone seen this and have a solution? I'm running a late 2012 Mac mini with Mavericks 10.9.2.

  • Why can't my iBook detect my Linksys wireless-B network?

The network works fine for all PC's, and it even works with my iBook when connected via ethernet, but the airport card can't find my network at all. For simplicity, I reset my router to the very basics so it's not using WEP.
I know the card works because I can detect my neighbor's wireless network.
DHCP is enabled, and the setup page looks like this:
    http://files.photojerk.com/ACX/setup.gif
I can post more information if needed. Does anyone have any ideas of what the problem could be? I'm pulling my hair out over this.

I'm having the exact same problem.
I'm using the Linksys BEFW11S4 v2 and have never had problems connecting a windows PC via wireless (using a wireless card). The macbook detected the connection for a few seconds twice, but it is gone from the list almost immediately. I reset the router settings so there is no encryption and an openly broadcasted SSID.
    Anyone have any ideas???

  • How can I set up a second monitor using the DVI, a mini Displayport to dvi?

    Hey guys,
In my office I'm trying to set up a mac with two displays, Samsung screensync sa450s, using a Startech MDP2DVIW mini displayport to dvi, and the DVI port found on the ATI Radeon HD 5770.
However, whichever monitor is plugged in through the mini displayport never shows video, and instead will just flicker sometimes, no matter which monitor I use, or which of the mini displayports i use. The system profiler recognizes both monitors, and has all of the specs on both monitors, but only the monitor connected directly to the DVI displays anything, even if it is the secondary monitor.
The StarTech does still work with the macpro that used to be in this spot, and the only salient distinction I can find is that the old computer has Mountain Lion, while the new one is still running Snow Leopard. Is this a case where we should just update the OS? or is there another fix?
I've also read online that many people have been not fully plugging in these mini displayports, so I'm worried that I'm doing that, but then I'd figure it wouldn't have worked when I plugged it into the old computer unless my predecessor had made some hardware adjustments.
    Let me know.

A frequent solution to problems like the one you describe involves pushing in the Mini DisplayPort cable-end.
It should be inserted until essentially ALL of the metal end disappears inside the jack on the 5770 board.
Is this display wider than 1920 wide?
EDIT:  The Startech MDP2DVIW adapter you cited is a passive adapter suitable for 1920 wide or less. You should be using ACTIVE adapters, about US$35. They cost a little more, but are much more trouble-free. The ACTIVE designation means they contain booster circuitry to raise the Voltage levels up to true DVI levels. The default converter produces good timing, but the signals are really low.

  • How can I extend to a second monitor

I have a Macbook Pro  OSX 10.9.3(13D65)    17 inc early 2008    I have the ability to Mirror but can I upgrade to be able to add a monitor so I can work on an extended monitor instead of using mirror? Can I also open Garageband in both of those windows and work on 2 different projects at the same time.

If you can mirror to a display you should be able to extend to it with no upgrade necessary; just turn off mirroring.
I don't know the answer to the Garageband question. Can it open multiple projects on one screen?

  • Why can't iPhoto '11 detect photos in my iPhoto library?

I recently updated an old version of iPhoto to iPhoto '11, version 9.5.
Now, when I open it, it's empty. No photos. No events. It looks brand new. Before installing this upgrade, I had a small, 64GB library of photos I stored in iPhoto.
So, I set about restoring my iPhoto library from TimeMachine by going in to Finder, finding my iPhoto library, then clicking on TimeMachine, and then once I found the library I wanted, I hit restore. (I think this was the right way to restore the library). I was then asked if I wanted to use "both" libraries or "replace." I clicked "replace."
So far, so (seemingly) good. When I look at the newly restored iPhoto Library via Finder, I can see it's now 64GB (perfect), and when I right click "show package contents" I can see all my pictures there. Great. But when I open iPhoto -- while holding down the ALT or Option key to make sure I'm opening up the right library -- still no photos.
I also tried iPhoto Library Manager, but it too tells me there are no photos in my 64GB iPhoto library.
How can I restore the photos/library to I can see them in iPhoto? I'm tempted to open finder and track them down and copy/paste them over, but have heard it's dangerous to tinker with the library.
    Can anyone help?

If you can't find a working library in your Time Machine backups you'll need to take this approach:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Why does FF open two windows when I open it? Why can't I close the second window without closing FF altogether?

After FF automatically updated it started opening two windows whenever I start FF. One window has the open tabs from my previous session and the other window has only the FF home page open in one tab, nothing else. I can't close either window without shutting FF down altogether. I have limited RAM (3GB), running Mac Lion, which eats up a lot of resources and now FF eats up the rest. It's a real pain in the ass.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js [2] file and possible sessionstore-##.js [3] files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).
