Why can't my HD to SD SHORT film look good? Best Encode?

I have a 12 minute short film on HDV. I imported it to FCP5 and then DVDSP4 and created an HD-DVD and it looked GREAT. Then I found out my computer is pretty much the only DVD player that can play the HD-DVD I had created. Thus began my journey to make a decent SD-DVD, and so far I am not even close...
HERE'S WHAT I'M DOING:
1. I used FCP to downconvert from HDV to DV (I don't have access to the camera to use it downconvert option). I'm sure this step is where the quality drops at least 4 generations!
2. DVDSP5 > Preferences > Mode: Two Pass VBR, Bit Rate: 5.5, Max Bit Rate: 8.5, Motion Est: Best
IMAGE PROBLEM:
Lots of pixelation in darker areas of the screen. Places i could see in HD are now just black and pixelated black at that.
TWO QUESTION:
1. My main annoyance is this: When I burn the DVD, it only burns about 20% of the DVD (HD-DVD would use 60%). I have the space on my DVD-R, why can't I utilize this space and burn 90% of this space with data to make my film look good?
2. iDVD did a better job of making the SD DVD look good. So I know there is something i could do. I've never used Compressor. How can I encode my HDV for use in SD DVD environement in DVDSP5?
Any help will be much appreciated... I hope answers to these questions helps others as well...

Yes i have been editing the sequences using native HDV 1080i.
When comparing the output of the converted formats here is what i did.
I have a Sony a HC1 HDV Camcorder. I captured and edited all clips with native HDV. Then i recorded back the HDV material back into the camera (HUGE issues with doing this in FCP - but ill leave that to another thread)
From there i did two things
1) I sent the native HDV Final Cut sequence to compressor and set it to DVD, 90Min, Best quality, 2pass VBR. I burned a DVD with DVDSP4 with this encoded sequence
2) i played back the HDV Sequence from my sony camcorder back into the television directly - but using the composite video output (not using the high definition component output).
3) I set my Sony HDV cam to output via firewire as standard DV (eg - i let the camera do its own HDV to DV downconvert). from there i recaptured back into FCP, compressed with the same compressor settings, and sent to DVDSP4
I compared side by side the content from all three options. Hands down Options 2 and 3 looked MUCH better than option 1.
Here is what i noticed
1) A lot of motion artifacts with option 1. This especially when the camera pans and moves. I think this has to do with the way interlacing during downconversion happens. If i run the FCP sequence through a de-interlace filter it actually does come out better - though not as smooth since you are loosing 1/2 the frames.
2) A lot of digital artifacts. pixellation and such like. It looks almost like one of those old VCDs in terms of image quality.
I had searched the forums and found that many other people are having the same problems - so i know that i am not alone on this one (unfortunately). I do find it frustrating that a very expensive >$1000 application suite which claims to support HD has so many issues with editing in HD (this is just one of the issues.. others are that you cannot reliably export HDV back to tape, there are issues with editing multi-cam with HDV with more than 3 sequences... etc..).

I'm guessing because I ripped some movies in a higher definition for use with the iPad and iPhone 4 I cannot add those movies to my iPod Classic 80GB.
Is there a good compromise in quality so I don't have to perform multiple rips? Better yet, is there a way I can add HiDef video to the iPod and play via the Apple Composite Video connector?
Given the relatively small storage space on the iPad and iPhone when compared to a iPod Classic it makes sense that the iPod would be a better storage and transport method for larger video files.

FIXED IT. For those of you who may be having the same problem, this is what I eventually had to do.
1. erase my entire ipod
2. put it all back on there
That seems simple but it also seems pointless. I do not know why I had to do this because I had already downlodaded the newest version of itunes, put everything on the cloud, and then downloaded everything back off of the cloud.
But for some reason I had to go in and
1. put things from cloud back into library
2. erase ipod (which had already had cloud info put back on it)
3. transfer all library data straight from library to ipod (without use of cloud this time)
For some reason this made my video show up on my ipod and not just my itunes.

How can change view in mail.receipts from Macy look good in iPad and iPhone, but not readable in mail

I would like to change from Outlook to mail. I recently got an e-mail with a receipt from Macys. It looks good on my iPhone and on my iPad. It looks good on Outlook, but its ugly on mail. Instead of having one compressed picture, the content is widely distributed. I have installed Maverick.

The reason I asked is because keying all devices synced is exactly what it is all about.
FYI, You need to use the Mail application, but you do NOT need to use an @me.com account. It support Gmail and other mail servers.

If so, you will want to go to the SmartSound Web site: http://www.smartsound.com/ as they have all of the licensing info for their music. You should be fine, but I would check, just to be sure.

I am very much impressed with the new SKYPE for Business look and feel. And am using this for business purposes regularly .. But what i don't like is its long name..why can't you guys make the name bit short/stylish/convenient ?..will be difficult to say every time that i am using "Skype for business.....".. For a transition to work, you need handles... basically, enough footage to overlap each other so that the transition can grab from both sides... your clip is merely 7 frames, way too short to be able to add a transition...
I've used the "joining two pieces of fabric" analogy before, but I think it was too girly.. Perhaps another way to think about it, is to think of a "dovetail joint" used in wood working... the two pieces of wood need to grab onto each other in order to hold together...

Why Can't we Get Broadband in our Home when all our neighbours have it!!!!

I contacted eircom on Wednesday last, 1 July in order to request broadband be installed in my home. I called at 17.42 and the call lasted 29.16 mins. I explained to your sales representative, Louise Doolan, that I had no telephone line in the home at the present time, but had had one approximately 10 years ago. I also explained to her that in April of last year I had contacted eircom about installing broadband in our home and that there had been an issue at the time involving the reconnection and supply of eFibre, but that the issue was ultimately resolved. Unfortunately, at that time, I mistakenly understood that we were out of contract with our current broadband provider when in fact this was not the case and we ultimately had to cancel our order during the cooling off period. Louise informed me that my old telephone number had been reissued to a new address and that a new line would have to be connected. She informed me that she would call me back within 24 hours as the line was showing that our address did not qualify for broadband. I did not hear from her again. On 3 July at 10.42 I telephoned 1901, as per Louise's instructions, and spoke with, I think, Mairead. She informed me that from what she could see, the line was still not live and said that she would re-request the line set up. I was on the telephone with her at that time for 14.55 mins. Mairead informed me that she was not in the office over the weekend, but that she would follow the call up for me on Monday and assured me that she would call me back. I have still not heard from Mairead. On Monday, 6 July @ 14.22 I telephoned customer care again to follow up on the order, a call which ultimately lasted 31.28 mins. I did not catch the name of the person I originally spoke with and he informed me that broadband was not available on my phone line and that that was it. I said that I was not satisfied with that answer and requested that he put me through to someone who could explain to me why broadband was not available at my home. He transferred me to a technical team and, if I correctly recall, I spoke with Adrian. Up until this time I had not been provided with a telephone number, account number or reference number. Adrian explained to me that he was a technical adviser to people with broadband already installed in their homes and was unable to help me. He suggested I borrow a telephone from a house, install it in my home, ring my mobile and that I would then know my telephone number. I was of the opinion that this was a far fetched way to get my telephone number and he ultimately transferred me to Harry in Accounts & Billing, Customer Care, Dublin. Harry explained that he and his colleagues could see no reason why broadband was not available on my telephone line and said he would transfer the matter to the escalations department and would expect to hear back from them within 24 hours. I asked would he ring me back within 24 hours and he said that he could not guarantee that, it may be within 48 hours. I have not heard back from Harry. On 7 July, 2015 @ 16.32 I telephoned customer care yet again. I spoke with Betty in the Dublin Office. I explained all of the above to Betty and she informed me that from what she could see on screen, there was no reply as yet from escalations and that she would re submit the escalation request. I told her that I would call back again. This telephone call lasted 5.29 mins. This morning at approximately 11 am (as I was in work and called from our landline due to a poor mobile signal in my office) I called 1901 again. I was put through to the Cork office and spoke with a young girl, whose name I cannot recall, but I think may have been Aoife. She said that she could not see any resolution on the file, but that as 48 hours had not yet passed from the first escalation request, perhaps I should call back later. I told her I would. I telephoned again at 18.48 this evening, a call which ultimately lasted 51.36 minutes. As luck would have it I was answered by Betty, with whom I had previously spoken, in the Customer Care, Dublin Office. I briefly outlined the above to Betty and asked her for an update on my order. She explained to me that she tried the line again and that it was still not showing up as being available for broadband and that I would be unable to avail of same. I asked Betty for a more satisfactory reason as to why exactly I could not get broadband. I explained to her that there is an eircom exchange outside my garden, that the house itself is only 12 years old, that the house was built at the same time as my neighbour’s houses, all of whom had their lines supplied at the same time and several of whom have eircom broadband without issue. My next door neighbour has eFibre broadband. Our houses were built and wired at the same time. It is beyond reason to me that his home can have broadband supplied and my home cannot. I do not live on the top of a mountain miles from civilisation. I do not live on a remote island. I live in a housing estate in Blessington, 25 miles from Dublin. As Betty could not provide me with a satisfactory answer, I requested that she transfer me to her manager, or Team Leader, as it is known. I was on hold for several minutes. Betty came back on the phone and explained to me that her team leader said that nothing could be done unfortunately. I once again explained to Betty that, given that I was told one year ago that broadband could be supplied to my home, I would very much like to know what supernatural event occurred in the meantime that rendered this now impossible. I explained to Betty that I understand that she could not explain the matter further and that, as I would like a more reasoned explanation than “we can’t provide you with broadband at the moment, sorry”, I would like to speak to someone further up the line and once again requested that she transfer me to her team leader. I was put on hold once again and, once again, Betty came back on the line and said that her team leader would not take the call as nothing could be gained from it and that nothing could be done at the time. As you can imagine, the fact that this comedy has been carried out over now 1 week with not just one, but six telephone calls not being returned by any of your representatives, I felt it was not an unreasonable request to speak to somebody further up the line. I explained to Betty that I appreciated her assistance and that I was not put out by her manner, but that I found her team leader’s refusal to accept my call extremely ill mannered and discourteous. I asked her for her team leader’s name and for her surname and informed her that I was making a formal complaint against her team leader. She advised me that she could not give out that information without her team leader’s consent and I requested that she advise him or her of same, request that the name be released and relay my disappointment and disgust at the manner in which I was being treated, the level of his/her discourteousness and ill manners. I also asked that she request her team leader take the call personally. Unbelievably, for a third time, her team leader refused to take my call, but deigned to bestow me with details of his name – Thomas Graham. I explained to Betty that I appreciated her help in the matter, that I found Thomas Graham’s manner despicable, that I felt he was treating her in a poor manner by having her scurrying around relaying messages between him and I, that it gave an overall very poor impression, that I was under no illusion, but that I was being fobbed off, especially as I have fobbed many people off in various roles over the years and that I was very disappointed by the manner in which I was treated. For the hell of it, I requested Betty one more time to request that Thomas Graham take my call as a matter of courtesy and once again he refused, A FOURTH TIME. I explained to Betty that I was not happy with the reason or lack of reasons given to me as to why broadband could not be supplied to my home. I explained to her that, until I saw an individual outside my home, carrying out an inspection and attempting to rectify the problem, I did not see that anything was being done to resolve the issue. I explained to her that I wanted to speak with a technician or engineer who could give me a valid reason as to why broadband cannot be installed in my home. She suggested that she transfer me to the technical department. I was transferred to the technical department and spoke with Adi who did his best to be helpful, but advised that his role was to assist people with broadband already installed in their homes. He explained to me that he could not see any reason from the system why broadband could not be installed in my home. He suggested that he transfer me to the sales department who might be able to assist me. Given that I had spoken with the sales department several times and that this was where this entire sorry saga began, I explained to him that I had no desire to speak with them as they were sales people and I wanted to speak with someone with engineering/technical information. I was put on hold for a time and Adi came back to me and said that he had spoken with a colleague who suggested that there may not be enough space on the exchange I was on and I that I should write to the Planning Department near Heuston Station to request that a slot be installed for my home. He informed me that he could see from the system that at 18.59 he could see that a request for broadband connection was made. As you can no doubt see from the above, the situation is farcical. I have contacted several other broadband providers, however, all of these use eircom lines and, as such, eircom “has me over a barrel”. This is, in my opinion, an absolutely ridiculous situation. It is July in the year 2015, not 1915. I live in a relatively modern house in an area where broadband is readily available. It is just not acceptable to say “sorry, we are unable to provide broadband at this time” without any investigation outside pressing a few buttons on a screen in an office in Dublin. To add insult to injury, to treat a potential new customer so poorly is, aside from anything else, bad business. My husband and I also have mobile telephone accounts which we had intended to transfer to eircom. In addition, my two children will also shortly be getting mobile telephones and we were thus likely to bring four mobile phone accounts in addition to our broadband and, possibly, evision accounts. The fact that eircom is a national provider whose lines your competitors use and that this is the best you can come up with is very disappointing. In the circumstances above, I wish to receive a satisfactory explanation of events to date, an indication of how eircom intend to resolve this farcical situation and an explanation as to why Thomas Graham was allowed to treat a potential new customer and a member of staff on his team so poorly. It created a very poor impression of your company and I genuinely felt sorry for Betty. I should state at this time that I have no issue whatsoever with Betty’s handling of what was a very difficult phonecall. She was very courteous to me at all times and, to be quite frank, put Thomas Graham to shame. Perhaps he should offer her an apology for his behaviour too. You should also note that I am forwarding a copy of this to the ComReg and I intend to contact my local TD if this matter is not resolved in the short term. Why can't I open a lot of documents since yosemite. They are in grey

Since I installed the last version of OS X on my Ipad, I could not open a lot of documents on my Mac. I thought this problem would be solved when I would install Yosemite on my mac but this is not the case.
Why are so many documents in grey and why can't I open these documents on my mac with yosemite ?

Why can't I write ID3 tags?

Hi gang. Odd problem. Just very recently noticed it.
With some files, but not all, when I go to bounce them, it won't let me write ID3 tags.
I click the Bounce icon. The bounce box comes up.
I overtype the file name at the top.
I select destination MP3. Stereo mode is joint stereo. Write ID3 tags is ticked, so are use best encoding, filter frequencies below 10Hz , mode offline and include audio tail. Bit rate mono is 80kbps. Bit rate stereo is 160kps. Bit rate VBR is not ticked.
I click ID3 settings. The Bounce box goes out and then after a very short moment comes back set back to the PCM destination with the file name missing.
I go through the whole routine again. This time the bounce box goes out and stays out.
The only way it will bounce is without changing the ID3 tags. It flatly refused to edit them. Just no way, I can't get at them, that's it.
Version is 9.1.5 (1 7 0 0.9) 32 bit. Yes I have tried saving the file, shutting the program down and restarting it, it still does it. Once a file starts doing this, that's it, it always does it.
The only thing that's changed recently is DwellClick. Every file created after that seems to have the problem. Every one before it is still OK, even with DwellClick running. However, if I create a new project now, the problem doesn't happen, it's fine. Something must be happening during the project that stops the ID3 tag dialogue box being accessible.
Is this a software incompatibility? a software bug? suggestions??

Erm, excuse me asking a really stupid question, but how would I do that?
and why is it affecting some files but not others? The latest file here does not seem affected. If it was a global preferences issue would it not affect all files? is it not more likely that it is the project itself that has the issue?
I notice that the project file can be examined as a package which apparently contains a folder LgDoc, which itself contains
displayState, which appears to contain coding instructions and data
documentData, which is mostly unintelligible coding with odd bits in clear text
windowImage.jpg, which is just the graphic for the icon.

Why can I no longer, after having downloaded Lion, write accents and other diacriticals when in the Google, Yahoo, FaceBook, or even here in this post? The new method for getting at the "option" symbols works fine in other places like spotlight, but now even the older "option+letter" doesn't work in most places.

Chrome doesn't support the new accent/diacritics/macron chooser. I'm not sure about other browsers such as Firefox. You can use the old Option+letter combination that Doug suggested. Hopefully updates will solve these little incompatibilities shortly.

Why can't I see my iPhoto files in iMovie?

[DISCLAIMER: My question is short, but my details are not. This is going to be a LONG read, but I wanted to make sure I provided all you helpful people with as much information as I could so that I could receive the best possible solution. So your patience and assistance is greatly appreciated!]
In iMovie [version 4.0.1], when I click on the Photo button to import pictures into my project from iPhoto, the following error message appears: "No photos were found. To use this feature, you must first create a photo library using iPhoto version 2.0 or later."
However... I AM using iPhoto [version 4.0.3]... with a HUGE Library containing 2000+ images and several created albums. These features work just fine within the confines of that program. They just aren't integrating with iMovie correctly. So... why can't I see my iPhoto files in iMovie?!!?!
FIRST ATTEMPT:
When I checked iMovie help, all it said was "You must open iPhoto at least one time on your computer to be able to access your iPhoto library from iMovie." I've obviously done this, having used the program plenty. Didn't work.
SECOND ATTEMPT:
When I checked this forum, the closest thread I could find that was similar to my problem suggested deleting the iMovie preferences file [com.apple.imovie3.plist]. It was later added that deleting the iPhoto preferences file [com.apple.iphoto.plist] as well had solved the problem immediately for that user. Tried it. Didn't work.
THIRD ATTEMPT:
When I checked the Apple Info site, their main solution was to try recreating the AlbumData.xml file which is used to populate the photo listing. Now this file can usually be found in the iPhoto library folder and I know how to recreate it. But THIS is where I think my main problem lies.
Unlike most users, my iPhoto Library is actually located on an external hard drive under "my hard drive name"/Pictures/iPhoto Library. When I checked this folder for the AlbumData.xml file , it simply did not exist. So as a test, I created a new iPhoto Library also on my external hard drive but the AlbumData.xml file was not created with it. I opened up iMovie just to see if it was able to browse the iPhoto library properly. But it still didn't work.
However, when I created a test iPhoto Library directly onto my Mac's hard drive, the AlbumData.xml file was indeed created with it. And when I opened up iMovie again... lo and behold, the iPhoto library finally appeared. It worked. But unfortunately, this solution still doesn't help me at all!
Thing is, I don't have enough space on my Mac's direct hard drive to move my entire iPhoto Library there (where it works). That's why I am using an external hard drive to store (more space). So is there ANY way I can keep my iPhoto Library located on my external hard drive and have the library, albums and files recognized in the other iLife applications like iMovie???
I feel I've tried everything, folks Could someone please please help me?!!?!

My main concern at this point is that the AlbumData.xml file is unable to create itself onto the External HD. When I view the file [that I created from my test iPhoto Library on my Mac's HD] in finder, it appears to be a Final Cut Pro type of extension. Is something wrong with my External Hard Drive in that regard? Is it just incapable of storing those file types??? Hmmm...
As for the alias solution... instead of alias-ing the "Pictures" folder like you have, I've already tried creating an alias of the "iPhoto Library" folder on my External HD and placing it within the "Pictures" folder on my Mac. But when I tried to "Find Library" upon launching iPhoto, the prompt box would not allow me to choose the "iPhoto Library" alias I had created. So I couldn't open it.
To be honest, I'm not exactly sure how to create an alias correctly... or perhaps I should try alias-ing the actual "Pictures" folder (like you have) rather than just the "iPhoto Library" folder, but I don't know how to do that correctly either.
FYI... I am mounting my External HD before I launch iPhoto.
Also, I have also tried dragging the AlbumData.xml file that I created from the test iPhoto Library into my active iPhoto Library folder residing on my External HD. It would appear to be in the folder, but as soon as I clicked somewhere else in finder and than back into the folder, it would disappear. Not sure how to "point to it" either.
Karl, think maybe you could provide some hints on how to properly alias something or "point" to the AlbumData.xml file? I'd try it myself, but I don't wanna screw anything up by accident.
PS. As stated in the post above, there's a possibility my External HD is no longer Mac OS formatted... at which point I throw my hands up into the air and scream!

Why can't I delete gaps in the video or audio timeline?

I have added narration to a sequence of old (silent) video clips. But when I delete or add a clip to march the narration I frequently get a gap on either the video line or the narration line. I can click on it to turn it gray but I can't delete to close the gap. The audio and video are not linked. They were recorded at totally different times. Why can't I click on a grayed gap and delete this?
One note:every once in a while (one time in ten) I can delete a grayed area. I have no idea what I've done on this occasion to close gaps.
Any suggestions?

I'm not sure I understand. What is the difference between a true gap and and an apparent gap? There were no gaps in either the narrative or the video until I inserted (or deleted a clip). I'm only using one track (the first one). And I've added the narrative just below it. There is nothing at all on video 2 or audio 2 (except for the title at the very beginning).
How do other people add a short clip into the video 1 timeline without introducing a comparable gap in the narrative line below?
This is maddening when I'm trying to finish what is really only a 12 minute video. Attempting to close everything back up again literally stops me cold. I assume more sophisticated users have ways of dealing with this. I wish I knew what they were.

Assuming (as Billy mentioned) that the question refers to SELECT statements (also assuming that "stmt" is short for "statement", nice time-saving abbreviation, thanks for that), you cannot use procedures because there is no concept of a procedure in an SQL query, and possibly in declarative languages in general (computer scientists may correct me here).
How would it work? Everything in a SELECT list has to return something - it's the whole point of a SELECT list. Procedures by definition do not have a RETURN clause (yes you can RETURN to end processing, yes there are OUT parameters, but that is not the same thing). Perhaps you could post an example of the syntax you have in mind.
