Why can't my partition be modified

I made a partition recently for OS X Snow, I made it 20gigs and now i wsnt to make it bigger but it tell me the partition cannot be modified, Anyone know what is happening. Thanks

You can't make it bigger if there is data in both partitions. Clone all your data at least twice outside of that hard drive*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Then consider erasing one partition so you can reallign the partitions.

Whenever I modify a photo in Iphoto it puts it in a "modified" subfolder. Why can't I move this modified file (I changed and saved file name) back to the Iphoto main file so I can see it when I open my photos?

A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.
If that does not cure it backup up your iPhoto library and rebuild it - depress the option and command keys and launch iphoto and use the options there - exact option depends on teh version you have
And always remember - NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure or content of the iPhoto library - nothing - no deletions - no name changes - nothing

  • WHY can't i PARTITION base drive ?

I am having issues w/ getting assorted OS9-OSX 2.8-10.4 etc.
i like to 'stay' w/ what works and not always upgrade until i really need to........well i should be able to set up a partition so i can have multiple OS like 'classic' and X.
So i get save all my files from the base HD that has the main OS but when i go to partition it...it doesn't work, stays muted..../the bigger HD which ironically won't let me get any higher then 10.2.3 will allow the partition......the main HD did allow me to upgrade to 10.2.8 which i use the most and want to SAVE but add TIGER on a seperate partition but it won't allow....it is under 10g w/ 6g left.
right now w/ NO partition i have multiple OS's on STARTUP discs......is there another way to add 10.4 but keep seperate w/o partition......as it is i have
[9.0-----9.2----9.2.2------10.2.3-------10.2.8] on startup D to choose from.
    can i add [10.4] w/o partitioning ????
im afraid of 'erasing the whole disc' like it warns....is that true ?
and why won't the main HD allow that partition......does it need to be eraced first ?
this is WHY i don't upgrade.......if it works why alter it ??????/cuz i can't run certain stuff like the latest QT.......but i always hear that older versions which is EVERYTHING after 6 months doesn't always jive w/ latest OS version.
sounds complicated.....but i just want to have options.
    thanx

First off......every idea you suggests makes an impression...sure back up everything, but if i remember ext tape BU systems are expensive and on my current budget that would be a luxery item, Having 2 HDs should be able to BU the most vital stuff....that being what will get lost in a clean install.
so what do i do ?
    i assume that i would need to (copy-dup-drag ?) USER-SYS folder- Library.......anything else ?
last time i had to input serial numbers for EVERYTHING, updates, plugins like Flash-shockwave etc. where is that all stored ?
other issue is FIRST AID in OSX could not repair or verify the main HD saying "HD failed to unmount cuz its in use"
this while im in diff OS on 2nd HD ?
The issue w/ TRASHING a ton of stuff......i called it choked, but i feel it would have worked if i emptied a little at a time. I did have 2.25g left in HD and twice that in TRASH, so when i tried to take out files, then it took even more space away.......can you empty a specified file in the trash ?
Running Tech Tool in OS9 seem to repair something and 'pass' but any idea how or why this main HD is now listed as OSX on the startup disc when it was 10.2.8 ?
[Get info ].....what files should have [system] and what should have [USER - self]
Is there a site or good DVD that explains the features of OSX ? HELP Center is usually worthless....i see so much that i have no idea 'how or why'...the 'concept'....drop box-public-sites- 'service' ie grab/summerize etc.......
    !@##$$%>>>THE BAD NEWS (for me)
i just did a startup disc to my main HD and get this grey screen w/ a panal in various langueages stating "you need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button bla bla bla......
well i went thru this before......it begins then freezes grey w/ a thick static bar left to right.....yuk.
any ideas what i should do ????????
the only thing that works is hold-option then i can get to HD 1-2......but 1 my main always fails. Whats the diff between Install & restore ???
again sorry so long.......but im trying to find awa y to repair or restore and avoid clean install thats even if i can get to that.....

  • Why can't I move or modify any file from Documents folder without writing my administrator password?

I have a problem with the Documents folder. Everytime I try to move or modify (rename) any file located in this folder, Finder shows a message asking for the administrator password.  It doesn't happen when I want to delete some file or when I do the same things in other folders like Music, Movies or Images, it only occurs in Documents folder.
I've checked the security and permissions settings, I've created other folders and moved my files there, but it did'nt work.
Do you know how can I solve it?

    Hello & a warm welcome!
Is the external also named Macintosh HD?
If only the Internal is, it seems something has messed up your drive.
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Reboot.

  • Why can't you encrypt an existing partition?

I've looked around for a tool like ccrypt for partitions but to no avail. In fact I came across a thread on this forum that simply stated it wasn't possible. Why can't you encrypt existing partitions? Or is there a way to do it?

You should look at TrueCrypt. You can use encrypted containers where are essentially encrypted partitions that can also be hidden. TrueCrypt supports on-the-fly disk encryption, this may be what you are looking for.

  • Why can't brand new MacBookPro9,1 (OEM Mountain-Lion) boot from Snow Leopard on external drive, or internal partition?

Why can't brand new MacBookPro9,1 (OEM Mountain-Lion) boot from Snow Leopard on external drive, or internal partition?
Is this because of hardware changes? Or firmware changes? Or is it just and Apple Inc. administrative fiat?

@Steve Holton: Sorry Steve, but you're wrong about that one . I'm using 10.8 (purchased and downloaded) on the internal HD of this MBP8,3 (2.2 GHz, 17"), and I am also able to boot into 10.7.4 and 10.6.8 from external FW800 partitions.
However, I DO have problems with my MBP9,1. It came with 10.7.4 installed and ran fine. Then I purchased and installed 10.8. It ran fine but could no longer boot from 10.7.4 on an external partition. I then reinstalled 10.7.4 on the internal HD and discovered that it is still unable to boot (even 10.7.4) from an external FW800 partition.
One of Apple's Senior Support Advisors has done some remote troubleshooting but the case is still open and unresolved. An earlier Apple Support case suggested that when, I installed the downloaded copy of 10.8, there had been a "firmware update" (behind the scenes) that is now causing the problems with booting from my external partition(s). This apparently is "a bug": it is not what is supposed to happen.
So - I believe - "the problem" really has nothing to do with hardware capability. It is strictly about Apple's strategy for "managing its future customer base". If you don't like it - use something else - I am seriously considering Ubuntu as an alternative.
If there's a hidden caveat in all this it's probably "Read Appple's Licence Agreement VERY Carefully".

  • HT203909 Why can't you provide specific instructions here about how to make the USB drive bootable?  The article referenced is not dedicated to Bootcamp--too long, too many options.  How do you make it bootable?

Why can't you provide specific instructions here in HT203909 (Boot Camp: Creating an ISO image from a Windows installation DVD) about how to make the USB drive bootable?  The article referenced for partitioning the drive is not dedicated to Bootcamp--too long, too many options.  How do you make it bootable?

If your BC Assistant shows the option to create a USB Installer, it automatically is marked as bootable. There is no need to have manual intervention to make a bootable USB. Once the process is manually modified, it is supported by the person modifying it.
You have two or three options (depending on your Mac Model).
    1. Create USB... - Use a USB2 flash drive, which is erased and formatted. If your Mac supports ISOs then BCA will prompt for the Media. Any Mac which does not have a built-in Optical drive will support an ISO. There are specific Mac models which support both, DVD and USB based installation.
    2. Download Software from Apple servers...
    3. Install Windows...
Are any additional instructions really necessary?

  • HT1338 Why can't I install Leopard for PowerPC on my old Mac Mini?

Why can't I install Leopard for PowerPC on my old Mac Mini? The massage "This can not be installed on this computer" appears.

My thoughts are that your difficulties could be one of these:
your non-retail DVD may only work on a very limited range of Mac minis
the installer may not like your new RAM
the installer may not like the language change especially if the disk has not been erased first
I have seen a little evidence for 3 in the code of other Leopard install DVDs - they appear to have less stringent language checks for erased volumes. Whilst I have never modified model specific installers I have modified retail installers to ignore speed and RAM checks.
    My advice:
back up your whole mini hard disk to an external disk - see notes
erase the hard disk and partition into 2 volumes with Leopard install DVD
try to install Leopard on one volume
put original OS on the other volume
    Notes:
Carbon Copy Cloner can be used to backup the whole hard disk
ensure the mini can be booted from the external disk before you erase the internal disk

  • Why can't I install Snow Leopard on my videos hard drive?

I have a Mac Pro with four hard drives. Lion is on the primary drive but I need Snow Leopard for a legacy app. My plan is to install Snow Leopard on a hard drive that I use for video projects, and then restart from that drive when I need to use the old app. The problem is that the Snow Leopard installation disk says that it can't install onto the videos hard drive unless I partition the hard drive, which will erase all the data. Why can't it install onto the videos hard drive? There's no operating system on that hard drive. The hard drive has folders for Final Cut Express Projects, iMovie Events, iMovie Projects, DVDs movies I've ripped, a folder of music, and an iDVD project. What do I need to remove to enable installing Snow Leopard?

If I understand what you are saying you have a drive with "stuff" already on it and you want to install a version of OSX on to it while still retaining that "stuff".  If that's what you want to do you cannot do that mainly because there's already "stuff" on that drive.
The only way you can do this is to either of the following:
    a. Copy the "stuff" off that drive to another drive.  Install the OS.  Copy the "stuff" back on to the newly created boot drive.
    b. Copy the "stuff" off that drive on to another drive.  Partition the drive into at least 2 partitions; one for the boot and one for the "stuff".  Install the OS into one of the partitions.  Copy the "stuff" back to the other partition.
Either way, if you want to use that disk for a boot disk, you got to get that "stuff" out of the way to do the OSX install on to that disk.

  • Why can't I install Tiger on an external drive?ne is

I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard. For reasons I won't get into, I need to have a Tiger boot volume. I have any of 3 external drives I could install it on (one is a FireWire hard drive, one is a USB, and one is an iPod). However, the Tiger installer won't recognize any as valid drives. On the window where you pick the drive to install, they all have a red "!" on them and on mouseover it says something like "Tiger cannot be installed on this drive. Your Mac cannot boot from this drive."
    Why?
Could it be because I'm using the Mac OS X install disk that came with my MacBook Pro when I bought it in 2006 and not a separate Tiger installation CD?

Limnos is onto the correct path, mostly. Install DVDs for Intel Macs require an external drive to be partitioned with the GUID partition table in order to install onto that drive. If the drive is formatted with the Apple Partition Map (APM), or something else, the OS X installer will not install onto the drive. Also, the volume must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
You can check the partition scheme of the drive with Disk Utility. Be sure to select the Drive (size/model# in the list), not the Volume (whatever name you gave the drive), and look at the bottom right - will either be GUID Partition Table or Apple Partition Map.
Note that it is possible to get the OS onto an APM-partitioned drive, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and successfully boot an Intel Mac, but the OS must be cloned onto the external drive (e.g. with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner) from an Intel Mac - it cannot be installed directly from the Tiger install DVDs. I have a LaCie external drive with APM partitioning, and I can boot my MBP in Tiger from that drive (and my wife's PB from it as well, since the bootable clone of her machine is on a separate partition of the drive).
Having said that, since you have upgraded to Leopard, I suspect you no longer have an MBP running Tiger to use as the source for that bootable clone. So, you'd need use Disk Utility erase one of your external drives (FireWire is best for an external boot disk, although Intel Macs will boot via USB as well - it's just slower), and set it up with the GUID Partition Table (one partition, or more if you like), Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, then the Install DVD should recognize the drive as a valid target for the Tiger installation.
    Hope this helps...

  • Can i just partition my HD by using boot camp 4.0.1 without install window?

Can i just partition my HD by using boot camp 4.0.1 without install windows?
cox i want to use rEFIt to boot up my pendrive to install windows.
Due to some reason the boot camp 4.0.1 cannnot detect my usb drive (that contained windows 7), so thats why i use the rEFIt to boot from my usb drive

    Yes, you can.
Let the BootCamp Assistant just make the partition and do not click on "Install Windows"-button.
The result is a preformatted FAT32-partition on your Mac.

  • Hard drive failure (why can't I start up with boot disk)?

Running OS 10.4.6. I was getting flashing question mark at startup. Tried starting with Disk Warrior holding down "C" key. Got Apple logo, but then screen frooze with horizontal lines across screen.
Rebooted, held mouse to eject disk. Tried TechTool Pro disk. Would not boot from that either (got circle with slash logo I think).
Finally was able to boot with Tiger install disk.
Ran disk utility from Tiger disk. My internal hard drive showed up in red letters and said "failing"
OK.....I can understand that.....I guess my hard drive crashed (on my 2 year old Powerbook...oh well)
But, why can't I start up with any of my boot disks (Disk Warrior, TechTool) only the Tiger install disk. Also the Panther and Jaguar disks will NOT start it...only the Tiger disk works. One more thing I'm wondering....I connected my external firewire drive that has a boot partition on it that I have started up with in the past....and it won't boot my laptop either.
Any ideas? Thanks for any insight. Guess I'll head to the genius bar tomorrow. At least my extended warranty is still good (I think).
    Powerbook G4 17 1.5 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Here is what the outcome was:
I took my Powerbook into Apple Genius bar (still under 3 yr. AppleCare), he determined that my hard drive had crashed. He shipped it for me to be repaired.
It came back with a message attached saying that the source of the problem was my 3rd party RAM, which was a 1 GB module. The note said that the memory had been removed...and that in some cases like this the removed memory will be sent back to the customer and will be in the box somewhere. I checked and it wasn't there. The "Get Info" for my system said I was now running on 512 mb instead of the usual 1.5 GB. The note said that this 3rd party RAM had caused the hard drive to fail, so the hard drive had been replaced.
I ordered a new 1GB RAM module from Apple for $300, didn't want to take a chance on 3rd party again. But....when it arrived, I went to install it....and my 1GB 3rd party module was in the slot....it just wasn't pushed all the way in I guess. I pushed it in firmly, closed up the computer, started it, and the "Info" read 1.5 GB again. I ended up removing the 512mb module and replacing that with the new 1GB one I bought from Apple. So now I have 2GB of memory and and extra 512 that I can't use. It has been running fine ever since (more than 2 months)
Can bad RAM really make a hard drive go bad?
I wonder why they said they had removed the RAM, but it actually had not been removed (at least not completely)

  • Why can't I copy a file to memory stick

Why can't I copy a MP4 file to my memory stick? I keep being told theres no room ... but there is room.
The memory stick has a capacity for 16 GB. But the Get Info command tells me 1.3 GB are being used. But Ive erased the memory stick and dont understand how there could be any files still on it ... unless "erase" doesnt erase them all and some "invisible files" are still there somehow.
Ive formated it using the MSDOS Fat 32 format.
When I try to copy a 5 GB MP4 file I get a message that says:
"the item cant be copied because it is too large for the memory stick's format."
Im at my wits end. There should be plenty of room opn the stick ... but apparently theres not. Is this something to do with partitioning?
    Many thanks ...

MSDOS FAT32 has 4GB file size limit.
exFAT is the format you need.

Now I can start LR 5 and I can watch/modify pictures, but as soon as I try to import new pictures LR 5 stops and gives the message "your LR 5 64-bit does not work correctly - searching for solution". I have not changed anything in my computer since lasttime LR 5 worked properly, only the registry was optimized by Norton 360.
    Trouble 2:
