Why can't there be a simple utility that shows me which device connected to my Airport is using how much of the bandwidth in a simple graphical or stats format without requiring me to be a level 10 Black Belt or Chuck Norris' paternal tooth fairy?

Why can't there be a simple utility that shows me which device connected to my Airport is using how much of the bandwidth in a simple graphical or stats format without requiring me to be a level 10 Black Belt or Chuck Norris' paternal tooth fairy?
I need to see who is consuming the most bandwidth and limit that user/device. A very simple and dare I say it, legal, moral, and normal wish.

They are not overloading the Airport. They are overwhelming the capacity of your Internet connection.
No. It's not "shared equally". That's not how packet switched networks function.
Most consumer grade routers do not have the ability to restrict bandwidth use on a per machine basis. You need relatively expensive (but readily available) equipment to do that.
How many people are on the network? It can't be that hard to hunt them down.

  • Why can I send email from my iPad, but my iMac which is connected to the same modem keeps telling me that it can't send the message using the same server?

I have an iPad 2, connecting via Wifi to an Actiontec Q1000 modem.  The iMac (3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz RAM, running OS 10.8.2) is also hard wired to the same modem.  Internet access is via CenturyLink.  Main email is from Shaw cable in Calgary (Phoenix is a vacation property), not through CenturyLink.
Can receive email on the iMac, but every time I try to send, I get a pop up saying "Cannot send message using the server .......".  Further prompts me to verify the address in the email, and SMTP settings in Mail preferences, or to select a different outgoing mail server.  I've tried using a number of servers, always the same result.
Using same settings in both devices.

Mail is not my forte, but what I noticed was that you have Centurylink and presumably have your Mail set up with their settings? But then you mention Shaw/vacation property/etc - you can send out email only through the server that you have set up as an account using the ISP you are using. If you switch places, do you have separate accounts set up with both Centurylink and Shaw so you can switch and use whichever one you're at? A Phoenix ISP won't work with a Mail POP account unless you're in your home - Phoenix - area.
Do you have a data plan with your iPad? That would explain why that works - it'll function sort of like a cellphone - works anywhere where there are signals.

  • Why can't there be a simple program to setup remote file sharing?

If someone wants to take a crack at getting my Time Capsule available remotely (off network over internet), I would appreciate it.
I am a graphic designer and use the other side of my brain. DNS, static IP, MAC address etc is very confusing.
I purchased a neat little app called Connect360 for Mac that automatically configures music/video sharing to Xbox360 from MacBook Pro. Evrything is automatic. Brilliant. If someone could do that to configure internet file sharing, it would be worth $$$$$$.
    Thanks

You cannot do a simple program with the multiplicity of internet connections, modem type, ISP types, authentication types. Also you notice that Apple decided everything should now happen from the cloud, so cancelled the mobileme service which did offer easier setup for something that is far more limited, at least for now.
Also please note there are fridge mechanics who fix fridges and car mechanics who fix cars. Photographers who make a living taking better photos than I can, and computer technicians who do network setups. If you don't fix your car or the washing machine.. why do you need to fix your internet networking?? Pay someone to do it.. but Steve said computers are easy and you got a false impression that everything should just plug together and work.. well it doesn't. Find a tame Computer tech and let him/her carry that part of your business. Spend your time doing what earns you money instead of in frustration at fixing the fridge. (Being symbolic of the computer network).
It is rather like when I (a computer technician) dabble in graphic design.. I do, and you laugh at the results.. !!
Please note I no longer work in that field because the pay is miserable, the customers ring up day and night and scream at you that the network is down and it is all your fault, and want you to spend an hour on the phone helping them. No service fee of course. You should on the basis of a single job, help connect their computer to the printer over the phone for an hour, rather than pay you a service call. Since computers are easy and you should just donate your time and life really to helping them do what Steve and Bill said was so easy.

  • YOUTUBE VIDEO'S WON'T PLAY (at all) AGAIN why can't there be a simple fix. If there is what is it ?

There is an old mechanics saying "if it isn't broke - don't fix it." Improving something, and making it better should not CAUSE more or different problems. Logic (I'm sorry I have to resort to this) would suggest if you make a change to something that creates a problem the change should include a diagnostic to find the problem and offer a direct straight forward solution.
When YouTube says "an error occurred"- - -WHAT ERROR? Obviously it knows one occurred - which one. Every browser knows (or should) that people use it to go to YouTube to watch videos. Thousands of browsers, thousands of platforms, who knows how many operating systems, etc... the "Major players" could, I donno, maybe talk to each other to address what seems to be a CONSTANT PROBLEM ?
Am asked by Firefox if I want to report crashes and other problems so you can make my experience better. I've always said YES ! Why am I still having YouTube problems 3-4-5- times a year ? Just want to know. When some genius came up with "Plug and Play" I'd thought I'd seen it all. Seems the approach is limited and doesn't lend itself to new version upgrades to Firefox, YouTube, Adobe (Flash player, Shockwave or whatever they are calling it THIS WEEK....).
I have an old Dell - slow clock, limited RAM, small 28G drive and zero dollars for an upgrade. YouTube USED to work fine. It still CAN. I don't know (nor want to / feel I need to know) what versions of anything I have. I don't know what things are left over things a new versions of whatever is causing problems. Please help me. I also have an ID10T error to be patient with me.

  • Why can't apple put a simple audible low battery indicator on the iphone?

I get so tired of having my iphone shut down on me mid-conversation. My screen is black and up to my ear; my phone is in my purse while I'm talking on my blue tooth and also has a black screen; or my phone is on my hip with a black screen while I talk with my earphones. How in the heck I am going to READ a low batter indicator on my phone behind a black screen? That information would be very helpful if I weren't on my blue tooth. Actually, that 2% low battery notification would very helpful to me if my phone weren't up to my ear with a black screen. Why can't they put a simple audible low battery indicator on the phone?

" How in the heck I am going to READ a low batter indicator on my phone behind a black screen?"
    You cannot.
" Why can't they put a simple audible low battery indicator on the phone?"
They can.  They have simply chosen not to do so.

  • I'd copied some pictures from a PC to a folder in Finder in my new iMac. The 'Date Created' in iMac is not the same as the 'Date Created' in the PC. Why? Is there a way to fix that?

I'd copied some pictures from a PC to a folder in Finder in my new iMac. The 'Date Created' in iMac is not the same as the 'Date Created' in the PC. Why? Is there a way to fix that?

View Menu -> Sort Photos is a good way to start.
    Some organising possibilities in iPhoto:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • Why can't I update latest version of apps. Always request applied . Although I sign in using correct password

Why can't I update latest version of apps. Always request applied. Although I sign in using correct password. But everytime prompted with incorrect password , retrieve password

There are plenty of apps still compatible with iOS 4.2.1. Not a majority, necessarily, but they're still out there. If the app you want requires a newer version, find another app the accomplishes the same thing.
Of course, it may be too late for that now, since you chose to hack/jailbreak your iPhone, and it is currently a brick. As varjak paw stated, this forum will not help you with your hacked phone.

  • Why can I sync a movie but not TV shows on my nano (7th gen)?

I am using iTunes 11.0 and can sync a movie (Miracle on 34th Street) to my new ipod nano 7th gen but when I try a TV Show (a Planet Earth HD episode) or even a brief video clip taken with my camara I am told that such an action is not permitted on this ipod.  So why can I sync a movie but not TV shows on my nano (7th gen)?  Thank you.

Before you can sync video files, it must be converted into a format compatible with ipod.  If you can’t sync a video convert it by doing the following:
In iTunes, select the video you want to convert. Do one of the following then sync again after:
    1) Choose File > Create New Version > Create iPod or iPhone Version.
    2) Choose File > Create New Version > Create iPad or Apple TV Version.
    I hope this works.

Why can’t I find a Flash Plugin that will run my videos on Facebook etc?

You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version, 10.2.152.25, 10.3.x beta, or later, is for Intel Macs only, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Version 11.0.1.152 is for Lion.
    * Unhelpfully, if you want the last version for PPC Macs, you need to go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html  and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
(If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, contributor Texas Mac Man suggests the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the latest version:)
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work

I am thiking of buying iPad to use it at school.
Can I open textbook withought WiFi?
How much will the Internet fee be?

What is your grade level? Most (many?) schools at the secondary and college/university level have wifi, so if using it at school you would be set there and if you have wi-fi at home, you should be all set, there, too. Having cellular can be expensive for what you get in terms of space, and depending on where you live, you might want to do some research to see what your best options are.
    That said...
I had questions as soon as I read your post. Are all of your books available for ipad? Do you have a computer, because you'll need one, etc.(I know you're using one now...)  If you do, then the ipad could work for you. My younger son is starting his junior year in college and he's getting an ipad for convenience. But he has an imac in his dorm room, so he'll be set. He knows that's more important for productivity than an ipad, but loves the idea that he can bring it to class for notes, put them on his imac for editing in microsoft office and excel, upload files he needs from classes, etc.
I opened a thread to the right on this page to see if there was information re these questions, and there are. There are also many threads where people have your same questions, and many have very helpful answers. The only thing is it might be time consuming. You might have to go way back to read them. There are so many questions asked 24/7 that a new question on this site might be ten pages back in a matter of hours. I don't do it often, but I check them out and and I've gotten some very helpful info. Take notes and perhaps what you learn can help you make your decision.
One thing I would skip as an option would be a netbook. They crawl... class would be half over before you'd get to start your note taking, and they are not powerful at all and have limited space even if you max it out with a larger hard drive. We bought two for my sons to take notes in college and don't use them anymore.
If you let us know more about your school level, specific situation, and why you want 4g, hopefully people can possibly help you better. All the best as you make your decision!

  • Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?

Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?
In other words, because the MacBook Air only has 120 gbs of hard drive space & my old hard drive, from a Lenovo, has 500 gbs of hard drive space (and I have over 120 gbs of music), I’m looking to manage my iTunes music from the external hard drive permanently. Upon attempting to access the iTunes library held on the external hard drive the following message comes up: “The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file”.  Is there a way to get around this?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

You will have to engage a split library which means you will have to start answering questions on this forum because you will need to learn a lot about how iTunes works in order not that have a big mess at the end of it all.  It also won't be easy when the time comes to relocate it all to different drives.
You can go to advanced preferences and turn off organize media and copy to items to media folder when adding items to library.  Next read about how to selectively consolidate items to the external drive.
    Sept. 2010, Consolidate selected content - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2589812 and April 2014, https://discussions.apple.com/message/25414357
"...selected the new tracks directly in iTunes, Control-clicked on the selection, and saw that now you can consolidate selected items." - http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090919000326840
Remember that when you start iTunes without the external drive turned on iTunes will present you with a bunch of broken links.  If you have automatic downloads enabled with iCloud you may have to turn that off to prevent iTunes from repopulating your drive trying to deal with those "missing" tracks.
If you add tracks in bunches to iTunes and want them to go to different media folders you will need to either add them by holding down the option key while dragging if the desired media folder is not the one set in preferences, or by changing the media folder in preferences.  Changing media folder preferences only applies to new files added, not old ones.
Okay, I am going to stop typing because you might just reply to me, "Oh, okay, forget it," and I don't need the exercise.
