Why can't you attach files when replying to email?  Geez!

Come on Apple, this is a basic feature on every other smartphone...can't attach files in reply to emails and can 't attach them from starting an email directly...instead you have to go to the file first, select it and then tell it to send in an email. This is ridiculous!

Apps on the iPhone are pretty much sandboxed, with some exceptions. This means that any given app can only see files associated with that app. You cannot share any files between apps.
You can't do this:
1) Download a file from Safari and save it (app number 1)
2) Edit that file (e.g. word processor) (app number 2)
3) Copy that file (e.g. file explorer) (app number 3)
4) Open an email and attach the file to it (app number 4)
etc, etc.
You also can't save files associated with an app, delete that app and reinstall it, and then restore those files. If you could do this, you could do a "restore as a new phone" to fix whatever problems you might be having, but not lose anything in the process.
The iPad can't do this either, which eliminates it as a laptop replacement.

Why can I not attach a document to an email? Every time I want to send an email with a document attached to it, an error notice pops out. It tells me that the file is being used even when  iall other programs are closed. How can I fix this issue?

Thanks Jeff, I was not aware that a template could be multi-page.  (All the existing templates were 1 page)
But it worked, saving me some steps.  When I was finished I renamed the document, and locked it.
Then tried to save it but  could not because it was locked.  I closed it, went to my Spread Sheet Folder ,
to find it, it was not there.  The Finder could not find it either.
    So I start over again.
I opened up Numbers and it showed my personal Numbers template folder, it contained both my new
original 4 page template and the vanished saved document!
I tried to delete the template containing these document data and could not - I had to go to the Library/Application Support/Numbers to physically remove it from this folder. Then I started over again.  I Finally found out how to make it work: I can now "save as", and then lock, and it will go to place where I want it to be saved and locked.
The secret is: Click on the document title in the menu bar, and it opens up  "Save as...", which works the same as in OS 10.4.11, and you can pick the place you want for saving.  Once done that, you can then lock the document in the same pull down menu, and then close it.
I also found later that I can delete a template from its folder, by letting Numbers open the templates,
clicking on the one I want to remove, then go to the "Numbers Menu/File/Move to...", select "Desktop"
and from there the selected template can then be thrown into the Trash from there.
It appears now that the real fault of the Numbers software is that the "Save as" command is not available in the "Edit" or "File" pull-down menus, but hidden behind the title of the document.

  • Why can't I attach files to my emails in Mac Mail?

I've messed with the .webarchive and .mailsignature to create myself an HTML email signature. After completing that, which worked, I can now no longer attach files to my emails in Mac Mail. I can click the attachment button, browse to the attachment and hit okay, but it shows nothing in the email and seems to freeze up. I have since replaced those .webarchive and .mailsignature files with the originals from Apple and restarted the computer but still am not able to attach files to my emails. Any help?
    Thank you.

Except for the first response, all of you are unhelpful. The email was configured. Apple contacted me about the issue and said that the iPad cannot attach multiple docs to a single email regardless of whether the docs are located on the iCloud, in Pages, or a dropbox. It's operating system is not designed to do so (a stupid error if they are promoting the use of iPads for business and productivity, or even fields like architecture, design, and marketing, or even as an office alternative for remote use in meetings...which they are in professional consultations with offices). It also cannot do this through an alternate email site like a university server, yahoo, gmail, etc via Safari. Apple also cannot recommend a third party App that can do so. What they recommended, and there seems to be a lot of buzz about this being a problem with the iPad on the Internet, is that people go to their website, go to product feedback and go to enhancement requests and request the capacity to attach different types of files other than photos, and the capacity to attach multiple documents to an email. Basic functions...any email user would want. One of the Apple techs even thought it was implausible that they hadn't integrated this function ALREADY, when I called to set up the appointment.

  • Why can I not attach files

When I try to attach a file on a web site my only option is to open file.

I also cannot attach files on websites.  For instance, I am job searching and I can't attach my resume to the website www.Barr.com. This is not the only website that I seem to have this problem.  In fact, each time I apply to a job, my iPad does not allow me to attach a file.  I have to copy and paste my resume. So frustrated..... This needs to be fixed ASAP..... Slightly disappointed.

  • Why can't I attach files from desktop to hotmail?

I'm trying to attach files to a "hotmail" message and my eMac just spins forever. There must be some security settings preventing this. Can anybody assist me? Thanks.

As I don't use hotmail I don't have experience with this problem. Maybe just move away from the Microsoft windows.live hotmail, to something more Apple friendly.
Do they have a support site where you could see if other's are experiencing this problem?
If you have an ISP, don't you get an email account with that, as part of the service? Often you can have several email addresses with the one ISP. For that you can use Apple's Mail application.
If you are traveling overseas and want web based email, the other alternative is Gmail.
Sorry I can't help solve your problem but it seems uncommon and I am not familiar with hotmail.
One web based email I use is Yahoo and that seems to work OK. Maybe switch to that.

  • Why can't I attach files using Yahoo email? I've clicked on 'Attach files more easily' and nothing happens. With all other browsers, I have no issues attaching files.

I want to attach Word files to some of my yahoo emails. Instead of the word 'attach' like on all other browsers, Fierfox wants me to click on 'Attach files more easily' and download this. Nothing happens leaving me unable to use Firefox if I wish to use my yahoo email and send attachments, files or pics.

The only way I can open a PDF is to launch the Reader X software and click "open files" from there.  Obviously, this doesn't help me since I need to email PDFs to clients, and printing 'n faxing isn't an option.
You don't need Adobe Reader to email PDFs to clients.

  • Why can't I attach files in an email instead of having them embedded?

Can't figure out how to attach files in an email. They always come up embedded. I need to send files to someone to edit them. Help please.
I'm sure this is an easy fix.
Using Leopard on a MacBook Pro and Iphoto 08
    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can. Control-click on the embedded photo and select View as Icon from the menu.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Attach files while replying an email

Situation: 1st mail received from Mr.A with attachment (say a PDF format file). Saved the same on my iphone. I do have a PDF reader app on my handset.
2nd mail received from Mr.B, being CC'd to me, and contains long mail trail.
Query:  I wish to "reply" Mr.B, along with attachment PDF file received from Mr.A.

    ok.....
I think i see what you need.
Unfortunately, there's no simple way. If it were a photo, then yes, that's very easy. (although if your pdf is a small number of pages, then you could send them as such, instead of pdf's.)
That's one way.... depending if you need your recipients to edit the pdf. If so, after saving the pdf as a photo(s), then in your reply to Mr.B et al, then hold a finger down on the mesage body, and a choice pops up, press the right arrow, and press "insert photo".
choose the pdf photo(s) and you know the rest.
    2) As my last, you can do this:
    Highlight and select all the contacts cc'd in Mr. B's email and press "copy";
Open Mr.A's email with the pdf and select forward....
clear the screen so all that is left is the pdf attachment....
go to the "To" box and then "paste" all the contacts.
Fill in your message in the body and you're ready to go.
    3) if your pdf viewer/reader is one which can save the pdf file AS a pdf, then from that app (viewer), then you should be able to select the pdf and email directly from it. In which case you'd need to select and copy the contacts as in (1) above.
I hope that's at least a little better, unless i've misunderstood you again! (sorry if i have!!!!!)

  • Why can't i get creative when making an Email in my hotmail account using Firefox?

Font types and color menus in hotmail when creating an Email don't work right.Drop-down menus for font types/print-color flashes on & off with 1st try..works on 2nd but pressing the ''bold text'' button cancels out all font/color combs selected.

Had this problem for quite a while but found a work-a-round. I click anywhere in the text I want to delete and insert any character. I am then able to block and delete any text I want to. It's been working great.

  • Why Can't You Save Files?!!?

All I want to do is download an email attachment and then load the song into iTunes.. Why did Apple leave out an integrated File Explorer? You can download lame third party ones, but they are their own entities and are completely non-integrated. Does anyone know why this feature was left out? If I wasn't on contract I'd dump my iPhone for an Android solely for this reason! So lame!!!

  • Why can't recipients open file attachments that I email from iFiles?

I currently use iFiles on my iPad to store and organize my business files but when I send any file from iFiles as an email attachment, my recipient can not open the attachment. Instead of showing in their email as attachment that requires a double click to open, it appears in the body of the email as a box with a red 'x' in the middle of it. Conversely, I use Documents To Go on my personal iPad and have no issues emailing any of these files as an attachment.

  • Why can't I attach docs to my email, even when I'm in my mac or yahoo account when using an iPad. I'm thinking of returning it because it is a basic tool that isn't supported.
