Since you clips were imported to iPhoto, I assume they were recorded on a digital camera which may use and number of audio and video compression formats. Since a file must contain "edit" compatible formats to be imported by iMovie '08, if the audio and/or video is incompatible, the file will not import. So, the first step is to open your clip in the QT Player and check the "Inspector" window to see what compression formats they contain. Once you know that, you can determine how best to convert the incompatible format(s) to compatible ones.

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either.  It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected.  VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC.  Is that the same?  Thank you for your time and response.

  • Cannot import Finalize movie into iMovie

I have a Sony DCR-DVD103 and when I go to File>Import Movies I do see my Finalized DVD, but all the files including the Import button are grayed out. How can I import the Finalized movie into iMovie?
Upon connecting the Video Camera to my MacBook Pro, DVD Player launches. I quit DVD Player and go to iMovie>Import Movies, but never see how to import the movie into iMovie.

The "Import Movies..." option is for importing "edit" compatible files from a hard drive into iMovie '08. If the source files are not already "edit" compatible, iMovie '08 will not let you import them. Instead, try the ""Import from Camera..." option. If iMovie '08 properly recognizes you DVD camcorder, it will import your MPEG2/AAC content by converting all MPEG-2 "P" and "B" frames to "I" frames (which are editable), convert the AC3 audio to AIFF, and place both in an MOV file container with start and/or end time offsets to minimize drift between audio and video. The resulting file can then be edited in iMovie '08.
If the camcorder is not recognized by iMovie '08, then you will probably have to import the MPEG2/AC3 files to you hard drive and manually convert them to an edit compatible compression format manually using an MPEG-based, third-party conversion application like iSquint (free), MPEG Streamclip (free but requires $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component), FFmpegX, (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), MPEG2 Works (pay-ware), or similar application.

  • Import iTunes movie into iMovie or Motion

I am a teacher and I wanted to show the movie Hocus Pocus to the kids at my elemtary school. But the school doesn't allow movies with ANY language. I would like to be able to import this movie into iMovie '11 or Motion 5 and block out the cuss words. This is a protected MPEG 4 video, so, none of these programs will let me do this! Any suggestions? (Please don't recomend any video convertors unless they're free, don't have a time limit, and will work with protected MPEG's) THANKS!

You cannot edit the movies and you cannot legally remove the DRM.
You can't show movies in school unless it is part of the curriculum (the movie actually pertains to the studies). Simply for entertainment is not permissible (without copright owners permission).

I have a short homemade film burnt onto a DVD, I now want to import the movie into IMOVIE on my MacBook Pro so that I can edit it, how would I go about doing this? Welcoming any guidance.  Thanks in advance.

    1. Insert your DVD.
    2. Open Disk Utilities (Application> Utilities> Disk Utilities). Highlight your DVD and press "New Image" on the upper toolbar.
    3. Choose the location you would like to save your DVD from the drop down menu, "Desktop" is usually the best choice. Then click Save.
    4. When finished, your DVD icon will appear on the desktop with the .dmg extension.
    5. With iMovie open, double-click the .dmg  file you created to mount it. The iMovie import window will then appear asking you to choose. Click Import All and wait for the Import to complete.

  • Poor Results When Importing QT movie Into iMovie HD

My Panasonic FX9 digital camera has a Movie Mode that records in QT (.mov) at 640x480 at 30fps. The resulting movies look fantastic in Quicktime 7. However, when I import the same movie into iMovie HD, there are noticeable artifacts, and the picture doesn't look very good anymore. By contrast, my Sanyo VPC-C6 MPEG-4 video camera, which is also 640x480 at 30fps, doesn't look as good as the FX9 to begin with, but looks identical in both Quicktime and iMovie HD.
    Any thoughts?

Never mind.....I created a new user (again), and all is well. Also, the original question has been answered: the final quality of the converted QT movie on DVD is better than the playback in iMovie, even in best quality mode. Also, in comparing the Sanyo's MPEG-4 vs the Panasonic's QT Movie Mode, it makes me wonder why no one has created a QT-based camcorder like the MPEG-4 camcorders. Yes, the files are larger, but I would trade less recording time for better quality. I understand that Sanyo will becoming out with a 1280 v 720 "HD" version of my VPC-C6 soon, so maybe the quality will get better.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Can't import Quicktime .mov into iMovie 10

Is it possible to import a Quicktime movie into iMovie 10?  I used to be able to do this with iMovie 9 but cannot get it to work with 10.  I can drag it into an event but no clips show up.   I can't believe that Apple would require a 3rd party product to get this to work.
As a separate rant, you used to be able to edit clips directly in Quicktime but Apple removed this functionality a while back; ie. deleting parts of clips rather than just trimming from the ends.  It is getting tougher and tougher to do basic editing even if you stay within the Apple ecosystem...

.mov can contain a variety of different movie formats not all of which are importable into iMovie 10.  Try playing it in Quicktime player 10 - does it say it has to convert?   If it converts it, the resultant file should import into iMovie 10 OK.  see: OS X Mavericks: Some files may be converted when opened in QuickTime Player - Apple Support
In Quicktime 10 the way to do this is to split a movie into clips and trim each clip as required.  These can then be imported into iMovie and joined as part of a project.  See:  QuickTime Player 10.x: Rearrange your movie’s content
Quicktime 7 Pro (which does allow removing 'middle' parts of a movie) still works in Yosemite

  • Importing Quicktime movies into iMovie 6i

I'm currently running iMovie 6 on an iMac G5 (iSight) with system 10.4.11 and trying to import Quicktime movies. The movies are nothing more than 10 minute slideshows created in iPhoto 6. The first four imported with no trouble but the fifth created an error screen that said "The file could not be imported, unknown error". . . . very informative. There are still 20 gigs on my internal drive but, to be safe, I created the iMovie project on an external drive with 60 free gigs. I tried updating iMovie and iPhoto to the latest versions with no success. Then I went back to iPhoto and broke the erring slideshow into two halves, before exporting them to Quicktime movies. The first imported correctly into iMovie but the second created the same error code. Since then, I have tried three or four other "slideshow/movies" with the same recurring error.
A year ago I followed this same process successfully to end up with a final DVD. I used the same versions of iLife 6 but, of course was not at Tiger version 10.4.11. My guess is that I was at 10.4.6 at that time.
If anyone has a fix or a suggestion for this issue, I would be most grateful.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I stumbled on the problem and it's solution so I thought I would post it for those interested. After two days of frustration, I accidentally discovered that the culprit was the backslash character in the name of my slideshow. While iPhoto has no problem exporting a file with that character in the name, iMovie won't accept it for importing. This sounds like an issue related to our PeeCee friends for whom the backslash is off limits. What is most puzzling is why Apple's iMovie programmers couldn't flag it as an "illegal character" error. It certainly isn't an "unknown error".
Anyway, thanks for any thought you may have given to this issue.

  • Importing Quicktime movies into IMovie

I have some Quicktime movies that are 868.4 MB in size and when I import them into Imovie they take approximatley 2 hours to import.
Is there a way of speeding up the process.
I have QT Pro and have tried editing the movie prior to import but the resulting file although smaller in size plays back as a green screen.
Can anyone suggest a solution. QT Pro doesnt seem to have a SPLIT feature in it like IMovie.

Why don't you just start the import at night, and let it run while you sleep? That will probably be the easiest solution.
To edit in Quicktime, copy-and-paste works the best. Open your clip, and then start a second blank Quicktime movie. Select the portion you want to use by marking the in and out points (I and O keyboard shortcuts), cut, then select your other window, and paste. Then export the pasted clip as DV stream for easy import into iMovie. Repeat for each clip. Or select the sections you don't want, and cut them from your original movie.

  • Trying to import HD .mov into iMovie and it's not importing

Someone gave me a DVD with MTS files.  The files were shot on an HD camera.  I converted them from MTS to .mov using Smart Converter Pro.  I am trying to import the .mov files into my iMovie and nothing is importing.

    Hi
It's a little "off" (the sizing is not quite right now), but it's viewable!
Yes - and the info from the sides - are not recorded anywhere as Camera was rotated 90 deg when recording.
    Only alternatives are:
    - Increase the picture size and crop top / bottom.
    - or create a frame instead of the black left and right side "pillards" . just to make it look nicer.
How a Clip-sequence is recorded is very important and using standing picture format as 3x4 (instead of 4x3) is a photo habit in my cases. I've just to forget it and try to concentrate on that it's Video-works I'm into doing .
To make up-sizing and cropping one can use
    - QuickTime-pro - or -
    - MPEG-StreamClip - or -
    - FinalCut Pro (expensive but here You can re-size and rotate and move the clip to view the interesting part - by key-framing.

  • Importing personal movies into iMovie

Let me start by saying two things. First, I'm a first time Mac owner (3 months) and I just love what mac has to offer and sorry if these are stupid questions. Second, I have done exhaustive searches within the Mac forums and I'm confused with all the various different answers out there on my topic.
What I'm trying to do is get all my personally created Sony 8mm handycam *home videos* (analog) into iMovie so that I can create dvd's. The dvd burner that I originally used made VOB files. I still have the original 8mm tapes. Various discussions touched on this topic with solutions such as getting a ADVC from Canopus and converting that way ( too expensive), using MPEG Streamclip with the MPEG-2 Playback (preferred method), and other tools that people mentioned that isn't as good. So my questions are the following:
    - If I use both Streamclip and MPEG-2 Playback will this import my VOB files for iMovie use?
    - MPEG-2 Playback says that it needs Quicktime. Is this the same as the Quicktime player that comes with the Mac out of the Box or do I need to purchase something different? Confused
    - Discussions say that MPEG-2 Playback needs to be "added-on". When I get the software and load it will this happen automatically or do I do something specific (i.e put it somewhere or move it to a specific location, etc)
    - Lastly, is there good reference material that I can go read as to how to do this (i.e, step by step instructions) for MPEG Streamclip and Playback?
    Thanks Much

Welcome sfhmlh133 to the  iMovie boards..
the workflow analogue>>DVD>>conversion>>iM>>iDVD.. is not the 'best' way in terms of quality. converting any DVD into something useful for iM/iLife adds a quality loss.. allthough, many people are happy with results..
so, best practice here would be usage of some converter, you mentioned Canopus (but too expensive), another 'cheaper' option is an eyeTV stick with analogue-in (=you get a converter AND a TV receiver/recorder for the price of one )
.. - If I use both Streamclip and MPEG-2 Playback will this import my VOB files for iMovie use?
    no.
it will convert vob to dv-stream, which is iM's preferred codec.
.. MPEG-2 Playback says that it needs Quicktime. Is this the same as the Quicktime player that comes with the Mac out of the Box or do I need to purchase something different? Confused
there is 'Quicktime', the media architecture on any Mac (and some Windows machines...), there's 'Quicktime', the player app, there's 'Quicktime' the 'file'/container format and there's 'Quicktime', in its 'pro' version, you have to purchase..
    .. still with me?..
the mp2 component adds to the free Player app the ability, to playback vobs..
the pro key adds to the free Player app the ability, to convert 'video' to .. something else.
the mp2 component + a pro key does NOT allow to convert DVDs/vob !!
if you use Mpeg Streamclip (free) + mp2 component (20$), no need for QTpro (30$) ..
.. Lastly, is there good reference material that I can go read as to how to do this (i.e, step by step instructions) for MPEG Streamclip and Playback?
    my ad free site?
    http://karsten.schluter.googlepages.com/convertdvdstodvs
there's another, totally free option, I haven't tested yet:
use the app DiskUtility (under Apps/Utilities) to create an 'image'; drag content of DVD into it; 'mount' that image; iM08 will notify a 'DVDcorder' and allows the direct import from there..
if I'm done with my tests, I'll add that to my site..
hope that helps, and isn't too much of 'information overkill'

  • Import Quicktime movie into iMovie

i need to import a movie that is in quicktime at the moment, i need to put it into iMovie. how can i do this.
    jack

Normally, you just drag it in.
FYI: QuickTime files are just containers. They can contain a variety of different kinds of video and audio. You need to know EXACTLY what's inside the container for a better answer.
