I second the question posed by Rysz....if you have ANYTHING set up at all (a mail account, etc) it will communicate with it's server..whether polling for new mail, syncing notes, etc.
Also, the 4S is designed to be PC Free, so check your General settings tab to make sure it's not checking for Software Updates. Also, are you backing up to iCloud? This will automatically do things in the background. Check the iCloud settings page.
And to ensure no apps are running, double click your home button. When the screen raises up it will show icons of any running apps. Hold your finger on one of them, and they will start to dance with X's on the corners. Tapping the X's closes the app. Close them all, then hold your home button and power button at the same time. Slide to power off, leave it off for a minute, then power back on. This will ensure no apps are running in the background.

Assuming it is the standard DVD format of mpeg2: (if it isn't post back with further details)
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
If you are running Lion:
From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

Just because the video is mp4 does not necessarily make it iPad compatible. To convert a video select the video in iTunes then choose File/Create New Version/Create iPad Version to see if it transfers.

I am an apple iphone user for long since iphone 2g but never had this problem till now. I recently bought an iphone 4d 64gb white and just after a day the 5.0.1 update came out and I installed it. Since then I cannot make out going calls and every morning I am getting a invalid sim display. Switching it off and on fixes that problem and all the other thing like recieving calls are working fine but I'm not sure about this problem. Is it a hardware problem or is still the problem with 5.0.1!!! This new update promised battery life and many other stuff aswell but mine become worse :[ dunno what to do now. I miss you Steve Jobs. Make sure you both have iMessage turned on in Settings -> Messages. The Receive At setting on your friend's phone will show how you can reach him/her (just as your setting will show how they can reach you). Hope this helps!

Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV 2 doesn't show up under devices like the Apple TV 1, to send video and music to the Apple TV you need to use the Airplay Option which appears in the lower right corner of iTunes.

What happens when you try, how are you doing it, and what are the files (music, films, documents ...) ?
If you are trying to copy documents then you first need an app on the iPad that supports the type of file that you want to copy to it - the iPad doesn't have a file system like a 'normal' computer, everything has to be associated with an app. As to how you then get the file to your chosen app will depend upon what the app supports - different apps will have different ways of copying their content to/from a computer e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc.
If you are trying to copy music or films then are you using your computer's iTunes ?
