because you do not have a 3rd generation device. The OS Version says so , otherwise you would be at 4.3.5 minimum and also Itunes is also always correct in determining if you have the latest OS ( if not it fetches the newest from Apple's Servers ) . And because a 2nd generation iPod stops at 4.2.1 you can't get the newest OS, because your device is old. Buy a new iPod , they have iOS5 preinstalled. -

I then went and closed everything I didn't need in the bottom toolbar. (taskbar). I then reloaded the software and waited. Took forever to reload and I don't know why but whatever it worked but I DID NOT HOOK UP THE IPOD LIKE IT SAID! I instead shut down the computer after loading the software and waited 5 minutes and turned it back on. I again waited and shut of mcaffee. It loaded everything fine this time and said new hard ware and drivers detected. I plugged my IPOD in and YES I WAS UP AND RUNNING (THIS IS AFTER 6 HOURS OF PLAYING WITH OTHER THINGS!) I am able to load and play, burn, watch movies, see pictures and everything your suppose too! The only thing I see different than the instructions is I left my usb cable plugged in and when it said to eject the disk I didn't. I also didn't plug in the IPOD (5th Gen) and then I shut down waited and then restarted the computer. I hope this helps others because I know the feeling of wanting to return something you paid dearly for and worked hard at saving money to buy one and it doesn't work. My only thing I dislike about apple is they didn't supply a ac adapter for the IPOD and the instructions say to plug it up when trying to charge battery. DUHHHHHH, ya can't do that if ya don't have one and stores are closed and won' open until Monday! But at least I am up and running. I just hate having to plug up IPOD to computer daily to charge the battery which only last a half a day1

My iPod updated by itself without a wifi connection. It told me to connect it to iTunes so I did and I updated the software and everything. After it was updated, my wifi button was greyed out and I don't know why. I sent it in to get fixed and the Apple store did NOTHING. I still have about 48 days left on my one year waranty and I don't know what to do to fix the problem. Please, does anyone know how to fix this issue without selling it or replacing it? I've tried all the troubleshooting techniques and nothing is working. Someone help.

Try from a computer. You may have to reset your password. If you can't get the comfirmation email then you can use the secret question. Once you can log in then you change the the email address.

There are so many people trying to update at the same time that some will have difficulty. If you are running iOS 5.0 or 5.0.1 and get the message that your software is up to date, simply try again a little later. I received this message for some time earlier this afternoon but on a subsequent check I was sent to the update page.

I have an iPhone 4s, not jailbroken. I was able to update to 5.0.1 when it came out last year. When 5.1.1 came out, I noticed that I never received the
notification that a new update was available. I updated my 2 ipads and my wife's iphone 4. I didn't bother looking into it, since I didn't feel the need to update to 5.1.1. Now I want to update to ios 6, but when I go to Settings > General > Software Update. It checks for updates , but still shows me that my 5.0.1 is up to date. I plug into itunes and check for update there and it still indicates that 5.0.1. is up to date as well.
Does anyone know what this is happening and how I can update to ios 6?

Please verify the model number from the back. If it is A1288, it is a 2nd generation unit and can not be upgraded beyond 4.2.1

I have a 120GB iPod classic with software version 2.0.1 bought in 2009.
I want to upgrade the software to version 2.1 so I can have the voice memo feature on my iPod.
I am running iTunes version 10.0.1
When I ask iTunes to check for a software update for my ipod it says, "This version of the iPod software (2.0.1) is the current version."
This is obviously not true.
I've tried to download the software update directly from apple.com ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120229 ) but it gives me a full download of iTunes 10.0.1 which I already have installed.
I don't understand why iTunes will not update my iPod's software. I don't understand why the iPod didn't come with the 2.1 version already installed. According to the download page, this version was released in 2003.
Can anyone please explain to me why or more importantly, HOW I can get the ipod software updated when iTunes fails to do it?

Sorry, but that firmware update is for a different model iPod, which would explain why its release date was from 2003 and not something more recent. The firmware on your 120 GB iPod is actually the most up to date version already.
