Why Certify the Network for Gigabit

Hi All,
Before we purchase gigabit switches for our network, I want to certify our network wiring to make sure it will support gigabit. Nobody knows for sure if the wires are cat5 or cat5e. The owner of the company says just plug a computer in to a port connected to a GB switch and if it connects at 1GB, then its good. I have had problems with this before and I know that trying to run GB over bad wiring can be worse than just leaving it as 100Mb. However what I am having trouble with is finding documentation to support that. Can anyone help me out by posting some links explaining why you have to test your wiring? Thanks!

I don't have any specific documents, but I believe the core argument is essentially "Why are you spending the money on gigabit if you can't guarantee optimal performance?"
In other words, failing to qualify your cable plant reduces the chances that your cabling is permitting the best possible efficiency (isn't that why you spend the money?)
Also, "plug it in, if it works, it's ok" is a fallacy ... you can get data through barb-wire fence, but it won't work as well as category-rated UTP cabling (IOW: you can use a VW Jetta to haul 20 tons of racks in the back seat too, but there's better ways to do it).
"Works" (does not equal) "working at best performance."
The tolerance for wasted time & money (keeping in mind potential network troubleshooting issues) is strictly dependent on your company's policy.

Just corrected leopard to lion. I connect wirelessly to my router. Shows as connected in taskbar but isn't until I go to network settings and reconnect. Then will stay connected while I am using. When I leave computer alone for 30 minutes or so and return have to do reconnect process all over.

Yes. You can directly connect an 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) using an Ethernet cable. The AXn would then just need to be configured as a bridge to allow the D-Link to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all network clients connected to either router.
In this configuration, the AXn would broadcast a wireless network for your wireless network clients to connect to.

If you are using your account's balance then the price of the song should be deducted from it immediately, if you are using a credit card then it may take a day or two for it to appear on your card's statement

Why are the options for "When Firefox starts" NOT clickable in Firefox 5? I want to choose "Windows and tabs that where opened last time you accessed the net" but Firefox won't let me.

In the previous version of Firefox one could choose to save tabs so that when Firefox opened, all the tabs from the previous sessions appeared. This was done in Settings > Options > General > Startup. In the menu for the "When Firefox Starts" one had the option for "Windows and tabs that where opened last time you accessed the net." in Firefox 5.0, this menu is gray and not clickable. Help, please?

Possibly you are not saving your "browsing history" which is what the session history is tied into.

There are several things that are related to private browsing and not saving History
* Private Browsing Ctrl+Shift+P
* You selected "Never remember history" in first drop-down of Tools > Options Privacy and all of the check marks disappear (See picture above)
* "Permanent private browsing mode" was check-marked under "Use custom settings for history" in the first drop-down of Tools > options > Privacy (see picture above)

Assuming you have a 4th gen shuffle, it should be fine hanging off the computer, since the shuffle is so light. You can think of that cable that comes with the 4th gen shuffle as being more of an "adapter."
If you want a long cable, you can buy the replacement part. It comes with both a short adapter (like the one you have) and a long cable.

I use a USB hub, which I can conveniently locate on my desk. I connect the shuffle (and my other iPod/iPhone) to the hub. If you want a hub, make sure you get one that is self-powered (it has it's own power supply).

There doesn't seem to be a one-size-fits-all answer, because what works for one printer doesn't necessarily work for another, and I don't have your printer so I can't advise on specifics...
However, perhaps we can discover a set of settings that will work...
If you File - Print, choose Photoshop Manages Colors, in the Printer Profile section do you see profiles specific to your printer (e.g., with the name Kodak in them)?
If so, choose one of them that seems appropriate given the paper you're using.
If not, try choosing sRGB IEC61966-2.1.
Now, before you continue, press the [Print Settings...] button. This brings up the printer driver dialog. You may have to go through [Advanced] buttons or whatever, but what you're looking to do here is to disable the printer driver's color management logic. In other words, if you can find a color-management / ICC profile handling section, set it to "no color management" or equivalent. OK back out to Photoshop's print dialog, then press [Print].
The key here is that if Photoshop manages the color transforms, the printer driver should not be set to do so - or vice versa.
If you're presented with the printer driver's dialog again, double check that the settings you chose above are still set, for good measure, and try a test print.

Exactly which driver did you downlaod and from where? By "GET STRAT", do you mean one of the Getting Started VIs? Error 5 means "NI-488: Command requires GPIB Controller to be System Controller." Are you using GPIB to control the instrument? If so, what type of board are you using and which version of VISA and NI-488? If the error only occurs on a read, try issuing the query from MAX and see if the error occurs there. In a couple of the Xantrex drivers I looked at, there seemed to be some fixed delays after a write and before a read. You might try increasing those values to see if that makes any difference.

I did the fix a few times and restarted firefox, with no success. Also, I installed the latest version of firefox and it is slower now. I have to use firefox for school, otherwise I would just find another way.

Scanning the network for devices with Network Monitor

At the moment there are no way to scan your network for devices. And I think there is a good reason for not doing so. If your users shut down their PC when their day is done - do you need an alert for that?
They way this is designed is for you to decide which devices is the most important, so much that it demands live monitoring.

Are they going to add the ability to scan the network for devices instead of having to manually add them? I've seen it in the inventory management but can't find a way to do it in the Network Monitor. I apologise if you can already do this but I haven't figured it out myself.
