Why changing clip's in/out points leaves gap in timeline?

When I change a clip's in/out points in the viewer, it leaves a gap in the timeline (while preserving the overall duration of the sequence).
Is there any way to change the in/out points so that there won't be a gap (adjacent clips move next to changed clip). I've tried the overwrite edit. Do I need to use the ripple or roll delete tool? If so, how would I do it?
Thanks!

I really don't want to get into a snitching match here. < </div>
Doh! Too late. You can contribute to the thread but trying to point out flaws in DH and Shane posts is a waste of time. You can take shots at me all you want, I just pretend to be in their league, that's my job around here.
learn how FCP works and you will be a happy camper. < </div>
The surprise for newbies is that FCP is remarkably deep and complex. It comes with 2000 pages of manuals. Thinking it should or will behave like any other application you've ever known, including other video apps, is silly.

  • Freeze up during clip capture with random change of in and out points

Having BIG problems capturing DV footage which began late last Fall. While performing a capture (assigned clips) footage would go down for a few seconds then would freeze (picture only, the audio continued) then after several seconds the picture would "catch up" and continue.
Found a solution here in the FCP forum where I had my firewire drives "ignored" by SPOTLIGHT by listing them in the privacy selection. Worked and moved on.
I have a project now where the problem has come up again. Once again during a clip capture it did what it did before - but now it ignores the assigned in point (audio but no video and almost consistently delaying it by 9 seconds into the capture) then freezes (at the assigned outpoint - sometimes) then continues to play on (audio only) then resumes (again catching up) then stops announcing a SUCCESSFUL CAPTURE. When the clip is selected to preview it plays back from the incorrect in point, freezes, then plays until the catch up - with now the audio out of sync. More craziness because now the log information now has changed: the MEDIA START & END information is not what was inputed so the DURATION TIME is now different and sometimes it adds a MARK OUT point (!?). I rarely use the CAPTURE NOW function but even trying that the footage still freezes up and goes out of sync.
I worked the SPOTLIGHT routine again with no change. Have completely optimized my system drive and external hard drives using DISKWARRIOR 4.1
I accept all the auto software up dates that come through UPDATER and see that I received a updated Quicktime version 7.5 on 13 June 08. I also noticed that I don't have CLASSIC OS 9 supported and seemed to have read here about something about FIREWIRE DRIVERS that maybe missing?
Was thinking of upgrading to 10.5 to see if that helps - but unsure about my FCP version/compatability...
So, here I sit frustrated since I have used FCP (which I LOVE) for quite a few years with great success - this is crazy! OF course, I have a project which deadline is looming!
    Any ideas?
    Much appreciation..
    Here's my computer stats:
    G4 Powerbook
    OS 10.4.11
    FCP 5.0.4
    QT 7.5
    Sony DSR-11 recorder/player
4-Firewire Drives with 20gigs of space available

So far have done a workaround to digitize my DV elements through iMovie. Not pretty. I string together the selected/import clips (in this case from interviews), assemble them in sequential order on the time line with small breaks of black in between, then export the timeline as DVCPRO/DV-NTSC quicktime file. Take that file into my FCP then segment out the clips on the time line, make each segment an independent clip so that I can name them. Not pretty but it works - miss having the logging data going through FCP log and capture.
Still waiting for any other solution to my situation - thanks!

  • Color is changing the clips in and out points

I tried to import into color a fcp7 sequence.  The original footage are quicktime clips.
When the project opens in color, the in and out points of the clips are not there and it gives me the beginning of the clip.
With other footage that I ingested in FCP I don't have a problem.
Can someone explain this to me.
    Thanks

    >The original footage are quicktime clips.
What FORMAT of Quicktime?  Because QT is just a container that can be one of a dozen codecs.  Color ony works with certain codecs, like ProRes, HDV, XDCAM, DVCPRO HD.  If the codec is anything but those...it will have serious problems.

  • FCP X Audio Drop-Out or Audio Gap on Timeline.

    Hello fellow FCPX-ers.
I am posting this thread on a few forums as I have encountered a very weird issue taking place.
Trying to figure out if the issue I am encountering is a bug/glitch or a technical issue.
This has consistently occurred in three different projects now all shot at different times. The audio has been fine on the camera during the recording process and has been fine in it’s RAW NATIVE SOURCE.
    THE ISSUE
For some reason my audio keeps dropping out on my timeline and it is creating audio skips/clicks making it impossible to export proper audio or fix the gaps on the timeline.
Screenshots are attached to this thread for a visualization example.
I have followed the process and finished troubleshooting with it all the way to FCP X.
Thus, I am able to pinpoint that whatever is going on is a FCP X issue
The audio is fine until it reaches the FCP X timeline.
I have tested the RAW FILE in VLC player and there is no audio drop-outs
I have also tested the video file in Sony Vegas Video and the audio is fine.
    The Digital Workflow:
It start’s off as a .M2T file which is then run through Clipwrap 2.6.4 as a (rewrap as source format) and then eventually makes it into FCP X and is placed on the appropriate timeline.
I have had this same error for three different projects now.  It has occurred both when using the NATIVE VIDEO FORMAT and when trying to use the (rewrap 1920 x 1080 format)
Thanks in advance for your time and help.
    reggie-

You don't say what your audio settings are for Clipwrap. If you're exporting mp3/AAC or other player format, then FCPX is probably having problems dealing with those formats.
You might try selecting your audio (or related video) tracks and rendering (Control-R) and see if that fixes the dropouts. You can also try selecting the clips in the Event Browser, right-clicking and selecting Transcode from the popup (if the options are available.)
The "native" FCPX audio format is WAV( ! ) AIF/AIFF and CAF will work just as well.  The transcode options should be PCM (or LPCM,) 24 bits/sample and 48kHz sample rate (or "better" - but the sample rate should match your project settings.) If you have control over these options in Clipwrap, you should set them accordingly.

  • Audition CS6 Multitrack - clip in/out points arbitrarily changing

Using CS6 on Win7 64bit in multitrack mode.
Assembling music and voice clips on the timeline to make a programme, saving as I go, and working usually from start to finish, CS6 is truncating some clips after assembly and saving, leaving gaps in the sequence, meaning I have to re-edit and resave.
Clips can have ends or beginning truncated, and it happens on music and voice clips, arbitrary timing of removed sections.  I can reopen a saved project to find new gaps in work I had already completed.
    Thoughts?
    Christopher

The project comprises music tracks, either mp3 (or variants) or wav, copied into a project folder on an external drive.  A project is started at home on CS6 usually by my wife just assembling the music tracks in play sequence on the timeline, leaving gaps for voice tracks to be recorded in the studio at our local hospital radio. I only get involved with technical issues, and it is a technique she has used many times.
In the studio we load the project from the external drive into CS6 on the studio pc, and record her links on a spare track, at the approximate location on the timeline where it will be used in the final programme.  Each link is recorded separately so Audition gives it a unique filename.
At home it is just a question of her assembling the music and links, editing each voice track if necessary for restarts, then dropping it in place with fades etc as needed. Usually all that is needed is to trim the voice track start and end to remove unwanted lipsmacks or dead air etc, which she does by dragging the clip ends.
It's a technique that is quick and easy, but lately she has complained that her Audition is arbitrarily chopping chunks off the beginning and end of clips on the timeline, including the music clips, leaving gaps on the timeline.
I've just loaded up the project from the external drive into my install of CS6 (both hers and mine are legit, and not the same serial), re-edited part of the project and saved it.  When she reopened it on her pc all my edits had disappeared.  The same happens if I now open it on my pc.
I've been using Soundbooth/Audition/Premiere pro for a decade or more so it isn't finger trouble, something odd is occurring!

  • Video after In and Out points Changed

After opening up a video in the Viewer and setting In and Out points, and dragging it back to the Browser afterwards:
    1. I tried changing the name of the clip that I dragged back to the Browser, though it changed the names of the other clips in the Browser to the same name. Why?
    2. How come when you double-click on the new clip and it shows in the Viewer, it shows the In and Out points as well as the video from the original segment around it. Is this the way it is supposed to be? I thought it was supposed to just display the segment of video starting with the In point and ending with the End point.

    1. do some reading in the manual. Might try making the clip independent.
    2. Yes. I know it may seem weird, but it has some really powerful uses. Double click on a clip in the timeline, it loads in the viewer. You can then change your in and out points in the viewer and they will be reflected in the sequence. (with some limitations). If you want to "isolate" the material between an in and an out, check out "make subclip."
This is very basic fcp stuff. Skim the manuals, explore the menus, you'll figure this stuff out pretty quickly.

  • Batch Capture Randomly Changes In and Out Points

I'm editing a documentary on Final Cut Pro 5.0.
Using a SONY DSR-11 firewire deck.
I logged sets of clips and then batch captured them. I DIDN'T select add handles in the batch capture tool. Some clips, as they're captured, change their in and out points. Sometimes by two frames early, sometimes by two frames late, and sometimes not at all. Several clips even stopped captured with an out point twenty seconds earlier than what I'd logged. The result is that I have clips with media start and media end points that are not in what I wanted. There seems to be no rhyme or reason whatsoever to this.
    Any ideas what's going on?
    Many Thanks if you do!

Check to see if your tapes have NDF time code.
If you play a tape with NDF TC using Log & Capture, the current time display will defaut to DF until the tape palys forward long enough for the current time field to update. It is posible to log NDF tapes as DF, in which case the timecode values can be incorrectly re-converted if recapturing.
Also, If you initiate a batch capture from the browser, FCP will default to DF, and not be able to update the TC format to NDF duriing the batch. The workaround here has been to cue up NDF tapes with L&C, and start the batch capture while L&C is still open and showing NDF TC.
However, upon upgrading to FCP5 last year, I found that even observing all these precautions and steps, FCP would still shorten the out point of my captured clips on NDF tapes. I was capturing a feature film that came from the UK, and so the starting time on the master was 10 hours instead of 1 hour. When the DF/NDF error occurred and shortened the out point of my 2-hour clip, it did it by several minutes instead of several seconds, because of the starting TC on the tape. In that case, I wound up adding several minutes to my out point and recapturing the end over again.
I haven't experienced this issue lately, but it comes up every now and then.

  • Dragging a clip made with In/Out points from viewer

I'm using Tom Wolsky's book FCE 3.5 to learn FCE 4.
I'm hoping it will at least get me through some of the minutiae.
I'm on page 44 and 45 "Slicing your clips" and under "Slice 1" #9 it says I should drag the marked clip from the viewer and drop it in my newly created bin marked "Clips".
When I drag whats in the viewer with my new In/Out points into my browser, I'm dragging the entire "Temple" clip into my browser that has the marked In/Out points on it, not just the clip made with the In/Out points.......my understanding is that I'm supposed to be dragging the clip I just made, not the entire Temple scene with the In/Out points simply marked......
Naturally, any help or scathing insight would be great!

I guess I wasn't supposed to be dragging the clip itself, but the master clip >with In/Out points on it..........
but the master clip >with *(_new in/out points_ and been made to a Modify>Make Master Clip)* In/Out points on it.
The new ones are now independant.

  • Copy In to Out points in timeline?

If i'm in the timeline and have in and out points set over a portion of a clip how can i copy the portion between the in to out points to paste else where like you can in fcp?
    Thanks

Curious (and also wondering if CS3 is different from CS4):
I was very confused until I realized that Patrick must be referring to Sequence in/out points.
Patrick, why are you using Sequence in/out points? I'm not suggesting you shouldn't, just curious. Help files address these as relevant to 3 and 4 point edits, or doing lift/extract operations. I couldn't understand why you weren't simply copying and pasting the clip, since a clip with in/out points will paste just as is (i.e. Jim's method).
    > Set your in/out points on the clip in the timeline
Jeff, can you put clip in/out point while it is in the timeline (other than dragging the end)? And if you drag the clip, then all you need to do is copy/paste.
Harm, there's no short cut to setting the in and out points your way, is there?
    Another option:
Select the clip in the timeline
    Go to Sequence in marker.
    Add a clip marker
    Go to Sequence out marker.
    Add a clip marker
Double click clip (opens in Source Monitor)
go to markers and set in/out points on clip
Move CTI to new clip location
    Add clip to timeline

  • Removing between and in and out point in the timeline

I don't usually post on forums but this has got me quite perplexed:
How do you remove a chunk of media between and in and out point in the FCPX timeline?
It's can't be as hard as it seems to do this task that you have to do all the time. I have a 2 hour 3 camera shoot and I want to remove quite a few 2, 3 minute chucks all through the show. I can't find any way to easily remove these chunks. I know there's no real in and out point in the FCPX timeline anymore but there HAS to be some way to easily remove all the video and audio between two points !!!
I feel really dumb! The answer can't be to make a compound clip as that sure is a pain just to remove something from the timeline. And to blade each individual track means I have to blade at least 8 or 12 things just to remove it!
I have to be missing something. Thanks for any input.

    Thanks Tom.
I'll have between 3 and 6 layers at any point. I've tried command B but the problem with that is it only puts a cut on the primary storyline. It will cut more than that if I select all the layers. By doing that it's like a 5 or 6 step process to delete chunks of media in the timeline. I can't believe there isn't an easier way than that.
But what makes it worse as I have a long piece of audio only media that  is for the whole show. Its a connected clip to the primary storyline. when making edits with command B and then deleting what is between the edits this main audio gets deleted from the edit forward. IT's like this audio becomes a connected clip right after the edit when command B is made. it looks connected to the next clip after the command B but it deletes when I delete the chunk between the command B.
This is so silly that I can't easily delete media from the timeline in this way. It's such a simple thing!

  • Getting rid of in and out points

To slo mo a bunch of clips at one time, I am putting the clips in the timeline, using paste attributes and then transferring them back to the browser to edit into my music video. After completing that step, they already have an in and out point. The in point in the beginning of the clip and the out point at the end of the clip. That means to do a cross dissolve, I have to delete the in and out points. I want to use paste attributes, but I hope I can transfer them back into my browser without the in and out points. Is that possible? Thanks for the help.

Pressing the Option and X keys together will remove In an Out points.
Option is marked "alt" on some keyboards.

  • Marking an in or out point in the event browser changes the selected clip

I'm getting quite infuriated with this issue at the moment. I'm not sure if it's a bug, or I'm doing something wrong.
I've created collections of subclips by tagging ranges with keywords in the event browser. I'm now trying to edit these onto the timeline. I find the clip I want in the browser and use JKL and IO to mark the in and out point of the actual part of the clip I'm going to use. The problem I'm having is that sometimes - not all the time - pressing I or O changes the selected clip in the event browser.
    Any ideas what's going on?
Many thanks in advance for any help you're able to offer.

Changes how? Post screen shots of what you're seeing and what you expect to see.

  • Why does't the playhead snap to in/out points in a merged clip in source monitor when using up/down

It seems to work on non-merged clips.  And within the sequence the up/down keys work as exprected.  But in the source window, with a merged clip (at least that seems to be the problem) the up/down arrows only take you to the beginning or end of the clip.
    Message was edited by: cjderosa1
I'm amending this after further investigation.  In an un-merged clip, the up/down keys do snap you to in/out points in the source monitor.  But they fail to do so in a merged clip.  In the sequence - the keys also fail to snap to in/out points.

You can use these hot keys:
Go to Previous Edit Point (enabled track) - Up
Go to Next Edit Point (enabled track) - Down
Go to Previous Edit Point on Any Track - Shift+Up
Go to Next Edit Point on Any Track - Shift+Down
Of course, you can re-map these keys to suit your preferences.

  • New problem/bug when I set in and out points on a clip. Unwanted automatic zoom in on clip timeline.

Playing clips to log and set in and out points for scenes I will use later.  Something changed with the new update and I think it is a bug.  When I hit the I and O keys to set in and out points on a clip before dragging to the sequence, it zooms in on the clip timeline.  I cannot see the full clip time line unless I zoom out which is a pain to do time and time again.  How do I get it back to the way it was before?  It did not used to zoom in and out, it just marked your in and out point as it played leaving the clip timeline unchanged.
I am using windows 7 with Premiere Pro CC

    Hi,
Thanks for your post. I think you are using Premiere pro CS6 as the Project option is included in the file menu and in the video there is an option of project available and visible. Please update your CS6 with the latest 6.0.5 update and the issue will be fixed. The link is provided below. Please update once issue is fixed.

  • Send to color changes some in/out points

This is confusing me a lot. I send a sequence to color and about half the clips (all in succession) export just fine, while the others (again, a group of clips in succession) have completely different in and out points than they did in my Final Cut timeline. What's even more weird is that the in points or outpoints didn't jump to the beginning or ending of the clip - they look like they were just randomly picked while preserving the clips length.
My sequence is HDV if that means anything at all.
    Thanks for any help.

I have found that HDV can be graded natively in FT, but it's certainly not simple, and could be the origin of your problems. More likely are speed changes. FT hates them, and Color, according to the manual, handles them only to a certain extent - Constant Speed only. It hates Variable Speed effects and stills.
Having said that, the timeline in Color/FT is a different beast from what we're used to - shots can slide around a bit and still find their way back to FCP, albeit with some adjustment needed later.
