Why charging is not supported by older iPod docking stations

The reason the new 4G nano does not charge on older docking stations is because the other iPods charge through a firewire connection and the new iPod nano does not charge through a firewire connection. I just wanted to clear that up as I see it alot in the forums.

This really doesn't clear it up, starting with the 5th Generation iPod and the 1st Generation Nano the iPod no longer transferred data via Firewire, came with USB cables and charged via USB. They also left the Firewire charging pin active (not prominently announced) so you could use Firewire to charge the iPod (only). Starting with the iPhone 3G there was no longer the alternative to charge via the Firewire pin, and the most recently announced Nano and Touch follow the same path. If anyones older accessory used the specified USB pin to charge there is no problem with the 4th Generation Nano, if the device fudged through bypassing the conversion from 12V (especially in cars) to 5V, but used the 12V firewire pin instead, then it won't work with the newer models.

Why charger saying not supported when it is a genuine apple charger

Do you mean the AC wall adapter or the cable when you say "charger"? Neither is a charger; the charger is built into the phone. You need to do some basic troubleshooting. First, try a different cable with the same AC adapter. Then try a different USB source such as the USB port on your computer. If you get the same message after both tests the problem lies in the phone. The most common cause of this message is dirt, moisture or pocket lint in the lightning connector on the bottom of the phone. Inspect it with a bright light and clean it with a plastic or wood toothpick. If none of these steps resolve the problem take the phone, cable and adapter to an Apple store for diagnosis. • Why is genius not supported on 30gig ipod classic

    Whats the deal, apple?
I highly doubt that hardware limitations have anything to do with skipping the slightly older ipod classic.
    Please release a software upgrade!
its a pain to be limited to using your new software on my laptop!

You won't be able to update an older iPod with features from a new one. As an example, when the Late 2006 version of the 5th Generation iPod was introduced it had a new search feature, this was not added retrospectively to the earlier model. The changes made to the iPod Classic and the other models are much more extensive than that one was so I wouldn't expect any aspects of the new features added through an Apple firmware update to earlier models.

  • ITouch iOS 6.1.3 not supported with bose iPod dock

We just had a Bose lifestyle v35 system installed in our home. The system sounds great and works seamlessly with all products except my iTouch V 5, iOS 6.1.3. The problem is not a faulty dock because earlier versions of iPod work quickly as described in product manuals. I have tried 2 different Lightning to 30 pin adapter. Both are Apple products. Has anyone else experienced this problem and, if so, did you find a solution? Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Why does my iPod(3rd gen) say charging is not supported with this accessory even though its not plugged in?

I was eating breakfast one morning playing a game on my iPod and it slipped out of my hand and into my cereal bowl. So immediately I took off the case and put in a bag of rice for a day and a half to let it dry out. Then when it started working again (thankfully) a notification popped up saying charging is not supported with this accessory after I unplugged it from the wall. So I thought nothing of it and pressed dismiss. Now when ever I wake it up, instead of my wallpaper popping up in the lock screen that stupid notification does. How can I get rid of it? Also my home button doesn't work anymore so I have to use asisstive touch instead. How do I take a screen shot without the assisting touch menu in the way? Thank you.

    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • My iPod touch 4G suddenly pops up with 'charging is not supported with this accessory' no matter what cord or source I use. It worked fine for months before this. What can I do?

This is crazy!  I love my iPod but it suddenly has a charging issue. Please HELP! I had absolutely no problem charging it for 7 or 8 months. Then last week I started getting an error message every time I try to charge it. I used to be able to charge it through my PC, PS3, wall adapter or car adapter. Now I get this message no matter where I try to charge it or with what cord! It says, 'charging is not supported with this accessory'. It happens after about 3-5 min of charging. Then I have to unplug it and plug it back in to keep charging it!  How or why did this happen and how do I fix it?

If you did not do a reset of your iPod please try that (you will not lose any data)
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If this does not work inspect the opening in your iPod where the cable connects. Look for any debris and clean it (a magnifying glass may be required).

  • My ipod touch 3rd gen doesnt work on usb charger but on dock it says "Charging is not supported with this device" How do I fix it?

I'm taking it in to get it looked at but will they cover this? And is there a way to fix it before I take it in. I'm still under the 1 year warranty plan. My friend said that they might exchange it. It's a 64GB and I use it for a lot of things like my picture, music, contacts, and email. It's got scratches on the back but other wise its ok the screen isn't cracked or scratched.
I have a usb charger for it but when I plug it into the PC or my wall charger it won't charge. It just says  "Charging is not supported with this device". It even says that sometimes when it's not charging. But it works on a dock station like my clock or radio.
Also my home buttom won't work unless I press down real hard. This scares me because I'm afraid I wil persss it too hard and break it even more.
    Please help.

  • "charging is not supported" when using the cable that came with ipod

I get an error message that "charging is not supported" when plugged in using the only cable that came with my ipod touch. My ipod will charge for 5 minutes then when I check on it, I notice this error on screen and the ipod has stopped charging.  I'm using the same charging method I have always used since I owned this ipod which has been over 2 years now and this only started happening recently. I believe this started when I upgraded to 5.0.1.

    - Look at both partsof the 30 pin dock connector.  Log for bent. mising or corroded contacts of orther abnormalities. The cable could be bad.  Try a new one.
    - Try a reset. Nothings is lost.

  • IPod Touch 4G "charging is not supported with this accessory"

My iPod Touch 4g has been getting the message "charging is not supported with this accessory" ever since iOS 5, and I just recently updated to iOS 6.
I currently use an Apple brand charging cord and a 3rd party charging cord, and none of them work.
I've been looking around in forums and there have been several temporary fixes that haven't worked for me, such as:
    - closed all apps
    - purchased a new cord
    - did a hard reset
    - updated USB drivers
    - updated iPod Touch driver
    - updated iTunes( just covering all bases here)
    - plugged my iPod in several other computers
    - tried putting it in airplane mode, then turning the iPod off, and then plugging it into the computer
    - and cleaning out the dock with compressed air as well as the USB ports on my computer
Does anyone with a permanent solution? Because this is starting to get very irritating...

  • Quicktime exported "Video format not supported by the iPod".  Why?

    Any help appreciated.
-I just downloaded new version of quick time 7.6.4, alongside iTunes 9.00, paid for Quick time Pro, entered the key code successfully and the Pro-only options of Quick Time become available.
-I exported my quicktime video files "movie to iPod". (File type m4v).
    -Added file to iTunes library.
-When I sync my ipod (160GB "classic"), i get an error saying the "video format is not supported by the iPod". (I can watch downloads from the Itunes store without a problem.) It happens several times.
    Any suggestions?

Your iPod classic firmware 2.0.4 support the following video format
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
Most likely the resolution or bitrate doesn't fall into the supported Video spec.
If you are using a Mac, I suggest you download a free video converter, called handbrake
You can also Google for other version of the video convertor if you are using Windows.

  • Sudden issue: Charging is not supported with this accessory

    Hello -
I've had a 32GB 3rd generation iPod Touch since right around the new year. It's worked nearly perfect since January until today, when I plugged it into my PC to charge. I got the error "Charging is not supported with this accessory".
This seems odd to me since it's charged just fine on this machine for the last five months. I tried using two different cords, tested it on my wife's Mac and a dock we have in the kitchen, which in both instances it worked just fine. I tested my wife's 2nd generation iPod touch on my computer and it worked just fine. It's just MY iPod that isn't charging at my computer all of a sudden. I can access it via iTunes, it just won't charge.
I also tried blowing out the connector pins with some compressed air. I have a USB hub which I usually plug this into and I tried it both plugging directly into my USB port AND the hub and neither worked. I also had two USB cords, both from Apple (one of which had never been used before) and it still won't charge at my computer.
The only thing I can think of is I recently updated my iTunes, but I don't know why that software would affect whether or not the iPod charges.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Jer

No, I appreciate your asking but we only have two iPod's, both are touches, and I had been using the same cord for both with no problem for the last five months. I did try both cords I had though to no avail. I wish it were that simple!
So many people have commented about this particular error but it seems like very few people have had it actually happen suddenly after months of use with no problem. So frustrating.
Luckily I can still charge it with the same cord on my wife's computer with no problem or the dock we have in the kitchen. I just want to know why it has suddenly decided to stop charging on my computer.
    Thanks!

  • Charging is not supported using this Accessory

    Hi
i have been using iphone 4 with 4.1, and last week the phone completely went dead and neither did it charge not could i switch it on. then i had to do the rest using home and power/sleep button, then it switched on and i would charge it properly.
few days after that i started getting the message "charging is not supported using this accessoty" then i upgraded to 4.2.
since then i can hardly charge my phone. i have used the original cable(s) and wall socket(s) supplied by apple but its not working.
    please halp

I have recently purchased an ipod touch 4th Gen, 64Gb device and have used it without issue, including charging with a cable I purchased from K-mart which was better designed and more robust than the ones that come with the ipod. I used this cable for years with my 2nd Gen Ipod and my partners 3rd Gen Ipod (touch) without any problems either.
Then, one day it just started to happen, not with the older ipods, just my new one and only when using the computer. Charging it on my My friends computer with the same cable is fine and my wall charger is fine and the older ipods on my computer are fine when also charged on that same cable. I don't care what apple says, it's either a glitch in the programming or a move to stop people from using 3rd party hardware by chipping everything they have in sight to scrape up extra cash and then telling the devices not to perform task unless the chip is detected.

  • "Charging is not supported with this accessory" with iOS 4.2

It looks like iOS 4.2 is not supporting the older USB cables that have the longer plugs with the two fastener buttons on the sides.
Since yesterday (after my update to iOS 4.2) I am getting that message on the iPhone screen:
"Charging is not supported with this accessory"
Now I have to spend another $29 for a cable that used to work until yesterday morning.
I am just not getting why Apple would render cables useless with a software update.
Has anyone experienced the same issue?

My two cents... This may eliminate some options...
I installed iOS 4.2 on my iTouch last night. I went to set up my link with Ubuntu on my main machine and got the message "Charging is not supported with this accessory" when I plugged into my USB port. After reading this post I tried another USB cable, and a reboot, but neither worked.
I tried plugging my iTouch into a USB charging device USING THE SAME TWO CABLES I USED WITH MY PC, and the iTouch behaved normally.
I tried plugging it into a Windows XP laptop and it behaved normally. I tried plugging it into another Ubuntu computer, and it behaved normally, although this computer is running a slightly different version of Ubuntu.
My iTouch is configured in a standard fashion.
I am concluding that the problem is not the cables, and it is not the connector at the base of my iTouch.
My suspicion is that one of my computers is running at a slightly different USB voltage than the others, and that this difference is somehow triggering a reaction from my new iOS 4.2 installation.
