Why choose Solaris 10 over Linux?

Hey everyone -
I was wondering if any of you would mind telling me what advantages Solaris 10 holds over Linux?
I'm not well informed on their pros/cons and would love to hear the perspectives of some gurus.

I am actually in the process of trying to answer this question for an upcoming project I am involved with. I have worked heavily with both Linux (SLES10, RHEL specifically) and also with Solaris 7,8,9, and 10 over the past several years. Honestly, I can argue on either side but I am trying to find compelling answers to bring to the management table. This may be like the search for WMD's but I think I have some answers and I continue to find myself leaning towards Solaris as I have in the past. One of the biggest reasons I chose Linux in the past was the ability to run on X86. That no longer is an issue. The many advantages of Solaris are for sure Dtrace which I have found extremely useful. Also one thing i'm finding is that support has become cheaper through sun than it is through Novell. One other thing is hardware. I have several Sun hosts that have been around longer than I have and continue to run while it seems I'm getting 4-5 years or less out of my other servers(Dell). Linux has gotten 10 times better since 2.4 and even better with 2.6 but with Dtrace, Containers and ZFS, I'm partial to Solaris. Also, ACL's are good in Solaris. I've never used them in Linux so I cannot comment.
If I'm off base on anything let me know and please add anything else.

The Java runtime environment doesn't automatically give you access to the OS environment variables. You need to pass the environment variables that you want available in your runtime during startup. This is done using the "-D<name>=<value>" options (see java -help for full syntax).
For Tomcat 4.0 you can pass parameters to the JRE by specifying the options to be passed in an environment variable named JAVA_OPTS (e.g. export JAVA_OPTS='-Dname=value'). For more info on this checkout the documentation at the beginning of the bin/catalina.sh in your Tomcat install directory.

Why do colors come over as Color Book swatches when I copy and paste to a new document? Original document has CMYK spot color swatches. I copy them and paste them in new document and it gets converted to a Color Book swatch. Why?

Check the spot color options of that document.
It's in the swatches panel's menu.

telnet is in the clear while ssh is not. In other words, the information travel over the wire can be seen in clear text by the intruder without having to deciper the data. Not so with SSH.
Similar argument can be made with http and http(s).

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.
Netflix uses adaptive streaming and can reduce quality right down to produce a stream as low as 0.5 Mbps.

OMG, mutt is flying right now! Even with header and message cache is mutt + imap not the fastest. I reccomend offlineimap for everyone.

Why does Adobe take over Part 2: I attempted to use http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/application-file-icons-change-acrobat.html and on download got a box that said, Quitting Raise without Handler!
Oh, and I had to uninstall the whole thing anyway just to be able to get to the Internet. Any Adobe icon I hit tells me that there is nothing attached to it.

May be you can try other solutions mentioned in the link.

Versions for Oracle installation over Linux

We are working for a project in the university, and basically we want to install Oracle over Linux, and develop some web applications. Before we start this project, I would like to learn which Oracle(8i or 9i) and Linux (Red Hat or Mandrake) versions would work fine and perfectly together. Since this project will be time consuming, I would rather take a right decision before we get into details.
I would be glad if anybody share that kind of experience,

Why has iTunes taken over the iPhoto file? I can not attach pictures to files because I can not find them. I can not upload pictures to software like Shutterfly for the same reason.

This has happened suddenly as if there were some keystrokes that changed the previous pattern. I am not able to upload pictures to programs such as Shutterfly because I can not find them. When I try to upload, the computer takes me to an iTunes folder.

Why is it taking over 4hrs to download "the Best of War" by War?

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now. About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

While the points brought up by the others are certainly valid, in my point of view, the best platform for Oracle, is the one which you are best capable of supporting. Where is your system administration expertise? Whatever your system administration staff is most comfortable with, should carry significant weight. If you go a direction that they are not comfortable with, at best, you're looking at retraining staff and/or hiring specific expertise. At worst, you'll run into a lot of stonewalling when trying to get support. DBAs, developers, and architects don't work in a vacuum, so, it's good to work with those who support the hardware.
