Why DDR3 @ 1333MHz on Core I7 iMac + CAS Latency

Hello,
I've just ordered an iMac 27" Core i7 (mid-2010) with 4Go.
On Intel's i7 page, I read :
http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37148&processor=i7-940&spec-codes=SLBCK
Memory Specifications
Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type) 24 GB
Memory Types DDR3-800/1066
# of Memory Channels 3
Max Memory Bandwidth 25.6 GB/s
Physical Address Extensions 36-bit
ECC Memory Supported No
On the other hand, Apple says that memory upgrades shall match the followings:
* PC3-10600
* Unbuffered
* No parity
* 204 pins
* *1 333 MHz*
* SDRAM DDR3
My questions are:
1° Why shall we use 1333MHz since i7 only supports 1066MHz ?
2° As regards CAS Latency, if I add 2x2Gb with faster CAS, will they work at their own CAS Latency or at the stock 2X2Gb's ?
3° If I decide to leave one slot free, I can simply add 1x4Gb. Will this impact the dual channel performance of the stock 2X2Gb or will this perform as before ?
Thanks a lot for your help !
Cheers,

Do yourself a big favor and stick to [Apple's Memory specification,|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4255] those that have not, have had all sorts of problems ranging from slow performance, Kernel Panic's, failure to boot, damaged slots and fried memory controllers.

When [Installing or replacing memory|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3918] you can have 2 or 4GB modules in opposing banks, but they all must be the same latency and speed.

More ram will help, but [Matched RAM on Intel Macs|http://guides.macrumors.com/MatchedRAM_on_IntelMacs] always provides the best performance.
Two highly recommended third party ram suppliers are [OWC|http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2010/DDR321.527] and [Crucial|http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=iMac%203.6GHz%20Inte l%20Core%20i5%20%2827-inch%20-%20DDR3%29%20Mid%202010&pl=Apple&cat=RAM]

  • CAS Latency 2 Reverts To 2.5

My RAM is designed for 2.5-3-3-7.  I've already changed it to 2.5-3-3-7, but was recommended by someone else with similar memory that I try changing the 2.5 to 2, for more performance.  When I set it to 2 it boots and runs fine, but CPU-Z and Memtest86 report it as 2.5 still.  The BIOS definitely reports it as 2.
    Why?
Is it true that the CAS Latency makes little difference on my system?  Why is this?

Sounds like CPU-Z is reading the IC Chip settings and not BIOS settings.

  • Cas latency setting

why when I set my memory timings cas latency to 2.5 and it says in the bios that cas latency is set to 2.5 does cpu-z report it being set to 2?

This will clock the ram at 400. You should be able then go further.
This is what I have done, the performance setting is set to slow, and even right now I have CAS 3 set in the bios but cpu-z still shows its using CAS 2. Using 333MHz DRAM clock with 250MHz FSB is stable at all default voltages, but anything above those wont work, no matter what voltages. If I set the FSB to 255, it wont be stable anymore, not even with 1.7v vcore and 3.3v memory voltage. Even setting the DRAM clock to 266MHz wont be stable with 255FSB. Also, running a lower FSB with a higher memory clock, so that the FSB is lower but memory goes above 200MHz wont be stable no matter what.

  • My USB CF Card reader is not mounting on my 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5 iMac anymore. It was last week and worked fine to get pictures from my camera. Now it won't mount. I have tried another card reader and the same problem exists. Also tried different cards..

    Hi
My USB CF (Compact Flash) Card reader is not mounting on my 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5 iMac anymore.
Last week it worked fine to get pictures from my camera but now it won't mount at all.
I ejected it in the correct way rather than just disconnecting it but now i cannot get it to remount!
I cannot even see it in the disk utility or system profiler.
I have tried another card reader (a brand new one bought today) and the same problem exists. I've also tried different cards to see if that made a difference and they still arent being picked up on the Mac.
I have done all the usual things like rebooting, unplugging all other USB devices and then trying but nothing has worked.
I'm a photographer and I'm at my wits end here. I know the cards are fine as i have been using them without issue and they are also new.
Note: If I plug the camera in directly to the Mac, the Mac picks it up just fine as it always has done. Its just the card readers that it wont pick up anymore.
If anyone has any ideas at all other than the following (my so called friends advice) you'd earn my undting love:
    Buy a PC
Use the camera (Thats why i bought the reader in the first place - importing RAW files from the camera is SLOW!)
Replace your CF cards (I have three 8GB cards two of which i had never used til today and they dont work either!)
Buy a new card reader (this is the 5th one in two days - none work on the Mac)
    Many thanks in advance!

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

  • Disk Utility hangs while initializing internal hard disk in Core Duo iMac

I have a 20" Core Duo iMac. Recently the internal hard drive crashed ("invalid B-tree node size" or something reported when Disk Utility tries and fails to repair it). I have all my data on an external hard disk used as a Time Machine volume, so recovery is not my issue. Initially I picked the write zeroes once security option and chose to erase the internal hard disk. Realizing this would take too long, I clicked on skip, and Disk Utility appeared to hang. I quit and restarted Disk Utility, and chose the "don't erase" security option, but when I go to erase the drive it appears to hang while at the "partitioning" stage and doesn't seem to get any further. There is motion in the progress bar, but no additional progress after about an hour. Disk Utility shows the disk but no volumes underneath it (whereas immediately after the crash, it showed an unmountable volume labeled "disk0s2").
Why would Disk Utility be taking so long and not making any progress? How can I reformat this disk if Disk Utility is not able to? Incidentally, I am running the Disk Utility that comes with OS X 10.4.8, since that is the OS X version on my portable hard drive that I booted from. I also tried using Drive Genius to initialize the hard disk, but it also appeared to hang with no progress.

It is possible the drive has failed, but to be sure start by turning off the computer. Wait five minutes. Then do this:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Be sure to boot from the OS X installer DVD, not a backup clone.

    Thanks

SADLY  not as i downloaded an upgrad to my original PAGES/
i have in the meantim had to open www.icloud. then from there import the file that i am working on and then check on ipad if it uploaded/ yes it did.
but what a waste of time as it doesn not save any changes done automatically back in the cloud....
i am now downloading the new LION and hope that it will fix the problem
i cant find any other way. I was lead to believe that you wrote, it saved automatically, on to the cloud, you then opened anohter device in anotother country even, and the new file was there, waiting, in its latest version.......
and the same magic was supposed to happen in reverse.
    It doesn't/
if i have to open a browser, go to www.icloud....why on earth did they not just leave us an icon to drop it in in that case?
I hope the new lion will help resolve the isssue/
any other ideas> keep em coming...thank you so much.

  • Magnet in G5 (non-iSight) iMac case top?

I have the iMac model shown below, with no built-in camera. I just bought an XBox 360 "Live" USB camera to use with iChat -- thanks to the 10.4.9 upgrade, it is plug & play.
Naturally, I set it on top of the iMac. When I did so, I discovered something I had never noticed before: there is a strong magnet somewhere near the center of the iMac's case top. This is not a problem; in fact, it helps keep the camera from falling off. The magnet is not in the camera, since it is easily felt by sliding a paperclip or other small metal object along the top of the iMac case.
I just wondered if anyone else had noticed this, or knew why it was there.

Thank you Miriam & DaddyPaycheck for your replies!
I suspected the magnets (there seem to be two) might be for iSight mounting, but I don't believe this is mentioned in any Apple documentation I can find, either for my iMac or in the online iSight User Guide. From what I can tell, the latter reference suggests only the adhesive "Flat-panel display and flat-panel iMac mount" for use with the G5 iMacs.
Odd that this feature of these iMacs wouldn't be mentioned, since the magnets might present an unwelcome erasure hazard for anyone still using (for example) floppy or Zip disks, or for an iPod inadvertently set on top of the case.
DaddyPaycheck, which mount did you use with your iSight camera? Not having one, I'm not familiar with the mounts other than from the online manual, which seems to indicate the "Magnetic display mount" is the only one that would be grabbed by the magnets. Does another mount have enough iron in it for the magnets in the iMac to grab it securely?
It's a pity Apple discontinued the stand-alone iSight camera -- there is still a demand for them, as shown by the prices used ones fetch on eBay -- more than they originally cost new! I haven't seen anything else comparable, particularly anything with an autofocus f2.8 lens or full OS support -- the now-supported USB webcams work with iChat, QuickTime Pro & Broadcaster, but not with iMovie. Plus, only QuickTime Broadcaster allows any adjustments (tint, saturation, etc.) with these webcams.
Oh well. At least those of us without an iSight can now use some cheap webcams with a few Apple apps.

Ok, so i bought a 16GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM for my late 2011 13" MacBook Pro whose memory runs at 1067 MHz (I was also told that late 2011 MBPs run at 1333MHz, is mine an exception, if so, why?)... Im looking for all possibilities to close the compatibility gap because computer freezes at boot and was wondering if there was anything i could do to get this 16GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM to work at 1067MHz or somehow get my computer to run at 1333MHz?...

You don't have a late 2011 MB Pro.
    You have a 2010 version.  Your MB doesn't support 16GB.  8GB Max.
That's what it shows on your about this MAC.
    You need to return the RAM and get 8GB ( 2 X 4GB ) 1066MHz.
Your system bus is set to 1066MHz.
You're having issues because you've installed more RAM than your MB can support.  It's only reading 4GB per bank which totals to 8GB and not 16GB.

  • How Many QMaster Instances for Core i7 iMac?

I've read several tutorials online, but none seem to address the new Core i7 iMacs specifically...
On this new machine is it best to setup QMaster with 2 instances (1/2 of the 4 physical cores on the i7) or 4 instances (1/2 of the 8 logical cores on the i7)? Or something altogether different? I've got 8GB of RAM installed, so each instance will get 2GB or more allocated.
Right now I'm using 3 instances, I figured I'd split the deal! =)

Selecting half of what Qmaster gives you would be the sweet spot.
In your case, 4 is ideal if you are doing a lot of other things while compressor is running.
Photoshop, Mail, Safari, Final Cut, etc...
4 will give you enough overhead to be able to do most other things.
I wouldn't go lower than 4 unless you're planning on doing intensive things while compressor is running, which I wouldn't suggest.
Now, if you don't think you'll be doing much at all while compressor is running, increase it to 6. This will give you more power and still have enough overhead for the system to function adequately.

  • Why is the brightness of my iMac become 100% automatically when I turn on..

Why is the brightness of my iMac become 100% automatically when I turn on my computer even though I set the brightness to the lowest before I shut it down.
I want to set the brightness to the lowest every time I turn on the computer automatically.
Is there anything I can do?

    Hi,
There seems to be a serious issue with screen brightness on the 24" iMac. About 6 days ago I bought a 24" iMac (2.66 Mhz model w/4 GB RAM + 640HD).
Out of the box it had Leopard 10.5.5 installed; there were several problems.
    1. Screen brightness was way too BRIGHT. Display preferences would not pull brightness down. At least not down far enough so that the screen could be viewed without extreme discomfort. Plus add insult to injury a reboot would reset the preferences to maximum brightness. NOTE: An upgrade to 10.6.1 did NOT fix the issue.
    2. Viewing a browser page via either Safari or Firefox (latest versions of each) was not good. A vertical scrolling would be jumpy and appear pixelated. Upgrade to 10.6.1 seemed to fix most of the issue in Safari, but Firefox was still not working properly. The issue appeared like a horizontal "ripple" in about the bottom 2/3 of the browser window. The effect did NOT extend outside of browser window. Changing screen resolutions did not work.
    3. Connecting a USB Logitech head set caused issues with Sound preferences.
If the head set was connected during startup the machine would recognize them as main sound. The internals speakers did NOT appear in the Sound preferences. as an optional choice. Removing USB headset and reboot would return the internal speakers to the Sound preferences. Plugging in headseat would work for a while. We could repeat and same problem would occur.
These are all in 10.6.1 - definate bugs.
Returned with the iMac to the Apple store. Bottom line, after nearly three hours; the Apple technician, and everyone could see what we were talking about.
Regarding the screen brightness. Nothing they could do about it. They stated that "not too many people have complained about it, to their knowledge." They stated that the electronics in the "florescent" panel could not be turned down the same way. TRANSLATION: The programers at Apple let this one slip past them. As a customer (software programmer & network analyst) I expected a bit more of an intelligent answer.
    However.
Examining the 20" model I noticed that we could turn down the screen brightness - at least to a level that my wife and I could live with. PLUS the settings remained after a restart. Something that was NOT happening with the 24" model.
So - we exchanged the 24" for a 20". Frankly we are a LOT happier. The Safari/Firefox issue is still carried over to the 20". However it is not nearly so noticable on the smaller screen.
Plus the USB headset did not cause the same Sound Preference issues.
So - Thanks for the speedy return/exchange of the iMac. But someone needs to look at this from the programming side of things.
