Why Design View will be removed?

My question is that: why Design View will be removed from Flash Builder?
Will it be substituted by another way of doing the things visually? Will adobe provide other visual tool to design applications? Disabling Design view and extinguing Catalyst seams that we will not any more visual tools. Is there any other plans for visual tools or Flash Designers or they will have to do the things in code-only?
Thanks

Whaaaa...... XML was designed to me machine read not human read! How can any sane person prefer to work purely in a horribly confusing environment when you can put your widgets directly onto a form and go from there? If Microsoft told all developers to develop their apps in pure code and run them to see, Visual Studio would not exist! For an example, you only went inside the VB6 .frm files when somthing went very badly wrong, as the display layout was totally seperate from the language code, and the base of Rapid Application Development was that the IDE did the heavy lifting of setting up the GUI and eased your code into it. That family of development tools more or less dominated desktop development from 1996 till today... But only on Windows. And so you all want to go back on that and do things the hard and slow way? I'm gutted.
You have the perfect environment for a multi-platform IDE, a proven language, a multiplatform system even mobile support in a one stop shop for Rapid Application Development that can be deployed to anything. I do not want to play with your MXML. I find it messy, clunky and slow. I do not want to mess with hand crafting each and every component... I can do it without even having to think about it with a GUI builder that is supposed to help me. If I wanted to hack around manually in source files and fiddle with declarations, correct typecase, naming and options for hours to get a script to run, I can do that already and it's called HTML+AJAX... Flex Builder was supposed to be a step forwards. Why throw it into reverse?
I was seriously thinking about using Flex and Air as a VB6 and C# replacement but this is a deal breaker...Well, this version should be supported for 5 years by Adobe according to their roadmap so in time I just hope that now the builder evolves for the better under Apache in that time and not get managed by people who prefer coding in VIM and ignore everyone else

  • Design View Removed?!

You've said Design View has been removed in your FAQ, but not said why. I use it to preview certain parts of my application instead of having to launch the app, then drill down to the point where that part of the app is visible.
It's a bit pointless saying Flash Builder 4.6 supports Design View since it is incompatible with the newer versions of Flex SDK. So if I created an application with Flex 4.8 and wanted to preview it in Design View, Flash Builder 4.6 would complain the SDK is not compatible and would not display the application.
Why did you remove Design View? Are there any plans to introduce it or something similar at a later date?

With all respect as former grouper at adobe i believe that you are taking aside here. Nothing wrong with that Don, but as iwas reading i got mixed messages... anyhow
The point i want to make clear, as i also believe some would agree and diagree is that adobe is simply gibing up with their one of the biggest inventions, JUST because a big *ss company such apple  thinks inother way.
I would NOT call adobe as leader, a leader would NEVER give up on its team, which is us... developers... users and so on.
What adobe is now doing.... well they fall pretty much into a dictator mark. Why think this way is that now every company looks up to apple, the biggest company out there and they do so... they dictate users and developers and seems like everyother companie now believes that this is the thing.
It used to be, company having discussions with users and developer what should the COMPANY do, what do you developers want to see and what do users want to see and experience, but thats not the case anymore.
So basically, Adobe is no leader, they would NOT have given up on flex nor fb. A leader would have at least done some changes that makes us as the developers to feel comfortable with the transition, but they didnt... or did they ?
Now that thing with the html5... thats not gonna be the big I in this world. For instance, take C and c# they are used WIIIIIIIIDELY.... consoles, PCs, surely some customized motherboards before compilation, well i dont know that sh*t but what i know, they have been around long time one of e oldest languages BUT STILL there are alternatives which people prefer.
That leads us to one thing only, yea html5 will probably be some ones new beloved comfortable relationship-like thingy but tghere will be others who still love the kinky stuff, such as3,mxml,haxe,c,c#,xcode,python and so on...
So DONT narrow down the opportunities..... you dont see that kind of transitions in stores where all these serials suddenly start to dissappear.
As leader one would strenghten the users behind him nowthrowing them onto a thins ice where there future will be unsecure, cause that happend to me.
Andone more thing with that dictatorism thing, its not only adobe, sony and ubisoft allready have shown such indicators and also applied some of them on their products where ive seen many and pretty threattening post and also EA seems to follow that pattern.
A leader would make you comfortable with your choises cause leader belived it himself in the product, but when leader gives up, then you truly see the "leadership".
Html5 is not for everyones taste, surly not for mine, ill stay with as3 and fb4.6 till they die, then im gonne become an unemployee and will live on the government cause ive payd my taxes for long time and cause of my leader fcks up, im gonna get those taxes back. Pathetic i know, like giving up, yes... thats what adobe does on us!

It is clear from this reaction that most people haven't been following Adobe's abandonment of Flex, over the past two years, and their total investment in other technologies and services.  It is business.
My point is ... you should not expect any significant investment from Adobe in Flash Builder.   So, complaining about design view, or any other features,  right now is not seeing the forest for the trees.
I WAS an Adobe User Group manager for years and a huge advocate of Flash Builder.  Now, I've concluded that that 4.6 is the last true version of Flash Builder.
Handwriting has been on the wall for two years now folks.   Time to wake up and smell the coffee.  Time to invest in other technologies like your leader, Adobe, is doing.
If you really like design views/drag n drop interface, I recommend you take a look at http://www.sencha.com for designing HTML5 rich apps.  Very nice design view interface.
I've chosen not to follow Adobe into their next big thing ... because most likely they will abandon it too like they did ColdFusion and Flex/Flash Builder.
With that said, Flash Builder 4.6 for Air desktop and mobile apps is a great thing to focus on for the next two years until HTML5 begins to come even remotely close to what Flex was capable of.
My two cents ... and clearly I have emotional issues that I need therapy for.

  • Why can't I use design view?

I recently loaded CS5 to manage a site developed witha previous version. The site includes php pages with a "require" function for a Fireworks-developed navigation bar. While I can do anything I want in code view, the design view will show only the navigation bar and no other design. All of the material is in the code and puts properly. How can I make the design view functional again?

I don't think I have it set up at all. When I go to Live View and try to connect, I get a message saying:
    Not Found
The requested URL /about-us.php was not found on this server.
I have the remote server set up fine - I can put and get files with no problem. However, I'm not sure how to set up the testing server.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Flash Builder 4 - design view - states basedOn + design area widget

    Hello,
Since i updated my project from Flex 3 to Flash Builder (4), i have very annoying issues in the design area.
The one in Flex 3 was quite usefull, but the new version is not easy, and straight forward usable.
    Here are the 3 issues:
    - when i have states designed from another one, i use the basedOn mxml attribute, which was used in Flex 3  and still exist in SDK 4 states system.
But the designer view in Flash Builder don't take those basedOn properties in account!
What can i do? and is it a known bug?
    -  When i have at least one precific state, i must define a defautl state, in the new SDK. Ok, but in design view, i cant add a new component without making the change only for one state. I can only make the change for the default state, but it will not be taken in account for all the other states, like i can do in Flex 3.
What i want to be able to do this: making changes in design view without selecting ANY state.
Is it possible? How can i do?
    - In flex 3, there were a design area widget to select the resolution used for the preview design.
It was very usefull when the application has very dynamic width and height.
In Flash Builder, this widget has been removed.
Why has it been removed? and how can i preview my mxml views wihtout changing width and height values?
    Thanks.
    Seb

The update has been improved in every other areas, so it is not that much important.
I just hope that the new release will fix that (as it has been answered to my post).
The only thing i don't like in new releases of FB is that when the architecture of SDK is aimed to seperate the work between design and code, they focused only on catalyst to create the tools to manipulate design, and they forgot to keep an easy way to do design app directly in FB (with the design view and the style properties of MXML in FB3). But i'm confident that they will give such a tool soon.
But for now, if you don't like the restriction of the new release, you can continue to work with Flex 3 for 0$! And even in Flex 4, you can create MX components for which the design view will work as before. The fact that tools can manage a mix between MX and Spark components is a great thing. It is up to you to choose which you need which its own advantages and drawbacks.
Xcode is real pain to use with outdated ergonomy. It is only usefull to code in Objective C which is another real pain to do.
XCode can be cheapper because all Apple products are quite expansive, so the software to create softwares for them can be much more cheapper.
And Apple get a good revenue share from AppStore, so again they can give a cheap soft to create apps. You also have to pay 100$ to be able to send app to appstore, in ly opinion the good price for XCode should be 0$, not even 80$!
Flash builder 4 is very stable, but if you don't like it, you can choose another tool. Main competitor has no designer at all!

  • Design View not rendering content of pages

I am the webmaster and lead developer for a state university. We have developed a responsive Dreamweaver template for our mostly non-coding users (admin assistants usually are assigned web tasks for some reason). You can see our site here http://www.wwu.edu/webtech . When we bring up pages in Design View, they cannot be edited; none of the content is visible. Live view is pretty good, but it's difficult for non-coders to edit in this window. For instance, in Design view they can just select Enter after a block of text to start a new <p>; In Live View you can modify an existing paragraph as if you were in Design View, but you cannot add elements without using the Insert tool. My non code users have no idea what the Insert menu is talking about. So my questions are:
    1. First - has anyone else hit situations where Design View did not work? Here is what it looks like for the site mentioned above:
    2. Any idea why design view cannot handle this page? It's a standard responsive site with media queries... I've tried stripping out complexity but cannot get it to work. It is valid HTML and passes tests.
    3. Am I using the wrong product? Can Muse handle Dreamweaver templates?

Nancy O, osgood_, Fritz, thank you for your thoughts.
Dreamweaver has been a wonderful tool for non-coders for many years. We developed templates for the groups, then all they had to do was put the content into the correct areas through the power of the Dreamweaver template. That is no longer possible it seems with the more complex, responsive templates. And yes, Osgood_ , it does appear that some pages will be rendered fine in Dreamweaver. Our older templates such as represented by this site: http://www.wwu.edu/bservices IS viewable and editable in Dreamweaver Design view. Those users are quite happy. However our newest responsive Dreamweaver templated sites such as http://www.wwu.edu/webtech and http://www.wuw.edu/registrar2 are not.
What I'd really love is for an adobe engineer to sit down and look at our templates and let me know if there is anything I could do to make these templates usable in Design View.
Our other alternative is to move away from static HTML and Dreamweaver and go entirely to WordPress and Drupal. I will miss Dreamweaver when this happens! I had hoped there was a place for those who did not want the complication of a Wordpress site...

  • Flash Builder 4 - Beta / Design view sporadic at best

Okay, so I have installed the beta, and running through the Catalyst / Flash BUilder 4 tutorial, all is well, unitl i try to get the imprted fxp file to consistently display in the design mode. Not only that, but switching from code view to design view will break it just about 95% of the time, and then it will not display the created items that the tutorial has you put on them (i.e. the databinds to the names, etc etc).
Has anyone else experienced this? Other than a few little things like this, so far so good guys(ADOBE).
    Thanks,

Please be aware that using a newer SDK with Flash Builder Beta's Design View may have unpredictable results. I can't say specifically since I don't know what version you tried and what your document contained, but... let's pretend for a second that the SDK changed something in a component - its name, its package, or any method or properties in it.  Design View was compiled with a specific version of the SDK, and would not know about that change, and so might not react very well to the document. Yes this is not ideal, but it's hard to avoid when the SDK is changing rapidly (at some point it will settle down, and this won't be an issue). We can look at ways to mitigate this.
I have had less unpredicatable results with recent builds of the SDK the latest being build 7988- I basically update from the svn trunk every 2-3 days look through the changes run the checkintests just to make sure all is ok then see what happens to be small testbed apps, I have been doing this for several months. I don't mind the IDE not dealing with the changes as long as it tells me why it can't. But the code should not break the IDE. Also i'm getting a little confused as some of the responses to some issues (not the design mode one) in this forum have suggested seeing what happens with updated SDK's.
Anyway I have reverted everything back to a standard FB4 install and the first thing that happened yet another new flaw in design mode rears its head, no errors but this time a visually definable issue. The component appears as a 1 dimension line in the top left hand corner of the design editor window, not even on the design view working canvas. Attached is a screen shot and the associated code that caused it. Please note the IDE didn't draw the big red ring around the visual glitch so thats one less bug to worry about.

  • No Design View?

I hope I'm mistaken in understanding that design view has been removed from flash builder 4.7. That was one of the coolest things about flash builder, I think removing it had to be one of the dumbest ideas anybody's ever had.
Please tell me how mistaken and there is a way to enable this feature,

There is no other way to see what you are doing unless you publish a swf.
    IMHO
For simple projects its not a big deal but if you work on large enterprise projects ( one of my projects has over 30,000 lines of code ) with complex dynamic designs that need to be compiled and uploaded to a server because of variables that need to be passed in and other remoting calls that need to communicate with services using session data it is a real drag. It can take several minutes to compile and upload just to test if I need to move something even as little as 1px in one direction or another.
And it is way faster  to drag and drop components and set the properties in design view rather than typing everything in manually. Thats where the "Rapidly Deploy" was a big plus.
When you have several projects going on with multiple deadlines you need every second you can get.
Once the initial layouts are established DV is not used much except for some small changes that are called for.
Using FB4.6 and FB4.7 to work a project is just lame but I guess I have little choice if I wish to stay current.
Some may say "Migrate to HTML5,CSS3,JavaScript"
I would say "There are no HTML5 equivalents for these key features we use".
    1) Encoding HD quality Video/Audio  from the browser.
    2) A way to stream that video to an  RTMP server (AMS and/or Wowza) from the browser to record and send live streams.
    3) Use RemoteShared Objects and other complex SSAS functionality that has various functions that also connect to external gateway services.
    4) Use LocalConnections to commumicate with  AIR apps our project launch.
There are more but these are the minimum I need to address to even think about migrating.
Adobe is leaving us high and dry with an inferior product compared to previous versions.
Nice job weenies. Your "Too Bad For You" attitude will bite you.

  • Live view different from design view

    Hi folks,
Does anyone know why, in dreamweaver, there is a difference between the site design in Design View and what you see in live view; and how should oneapproach this difference?
    Thanks.

Design View was coded a LONG time ago and Adobe hasn't really changed it much. It is very useful for my workflow, which is to work in Split view and jump back and forth between the Design view pane and the Code View pane. I know right off the bat that I won't see everything. Design View will never show me the newer CSS3 attributes, like shadow, gradients and so on. But it gives me a "rough" analog to work with while I'm doing general layout. Things like, "Am I breaking up the text enough to keep people on my web page?" "Do I have this typeface too small?" "Is the picture I just put in there positioned correctly?"
Also, be forewarned, "Live" view is Webkit (an Open Source browser) so it will accurately portray Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari. It will not accurately show issues with Firefox and Internet Exploiter. So, before you launch your website, do a check in all of the major browsers.

  • Unable to view php files in Design View?

Need help! I cannot select design view when working with a PHP document, the DesignView option is disabled?
    My information.
    -          Dreamweaver CS5
    -          Mac OSX 10.6 snow Lepoard
I have searched online and I also went through the FAQ but couldn’t find anything relating to this particular issue and my Professor at school said that I need to contact Adobe directly as design view should always be available but all that I would see in Design View are the HTML elements within the PHP file.
The Design View button is disabled, I can not click on it all and so for my class assignments. I have to copy the PHP code into a new HTML document and only then am I able to view the html/php and edit the HTML elements, and then copy and paste it back into the PHP file once I have the html elements/design set up correctly.
I did a similar “Set up PHP for Mac OS X – MAMP” to the version available here, could I have set this up incorrectly and that is why Design View is disabled?
Thanks I appreciate your guys expertise and any help!

Go to Dreamweaver > Preferences, and select File Types / Editors from the Category list on the left. Make sure that .php is NOT listed among the filename extensions in "Open in code view".
Adding a filename extension to that list prevents files from being opened in Design view.

  • Crystal XI viewer will not open in Internet Explorer

I have a web site using ASP and we are using Crystal XI as our report program.  We developers have created the .msi file that is distributed to our QA and Production Servers so that all users can run reports and see them in Crystal Viewer using IE using any PC.
The problem is that only we developers can see the viewer in IE.  Any client that runs the reports on a virgin machine (no Crystal loaded) only gets an IE window with a red "x" in the upper left hand corner.
Does any one know why the viewer will not display?
The .msi file I created holds these fiels:
    CrystalReports11_5_RDC_Licence.msm
    CrystalReports11_5_RDC_Runtime.msm
    CrystalReports11_5_RDC_ReportEngin.msm
    Microsoft_VC80_ALT_x86.msm
    Microsoft_VC80_CRT_x86.msm
Plus a dll that is custom to us.
Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?  As I said it works just fine (the viewer is show in IE) on any machine that has had Crystal Reports loaded prior to the run.

Intermittent rights issues when trying to auto-deploy ActiveX controls on a machine is very onerous to resolve.
Because of security concerns, typical corporate machines prohibit users from auto-downloading and installing ActiveX controls.
When the ActiveX control is required on a machine that's locked down, the ActiveXViewer.cab file must be physically copied to the machine, and a user with administrator (preferrably local admin) rights must manually install the CRViewer.inf found in the cab file.
CR.NET and Java Reporting Component has a HTML-based zero-client viewer, that do not encounter issues with ActiveX (unless the ActiveX print control need to be used for client-side printing).

  • Design View disappeared in FB 4.5 (not 4.7)

I know that Flash Builder 4.7 does not have a design view.  However in Flash Builder 4.5 the option to switch to the Design View is grayed out and the button for design view has disappeared from my interface.  I need this design view to follow a specific tutorial although I could probably get away with inspecting the code if I can get my hands on it.  I would prefer to have the design view there.  That's what I paid for with this version of Flash Builder.
    Thanks in advance.

Design view is available up to Flash Builder 4.6, but you can not use a later version of the Flash SDK than 4.6 otherwise design view will not be enabled.

  • BUG: JSP disappears from design view with MyFaces / Tomahawk

    Hi,
When I try to create a JSF JSP in design view (as opposed to code view) using MyFaces and Tomahawk 1.1.3, the design view will blank and display "Type, paste or drag and drop content onto this blank....". This usually happens after I've dragged half a dozen JSF outputlabels and inputtext boxes. The code still exists in code view, and will even compile and deploy ok, it's just the design view that stops working. The design view usually blanks while I'm switching between the code tabs at the top of the screen, although I'm fairly sure it blanked as I dropped a textbox onto the form once.
I've restarted JDev, tried to create a second page, clicked refresh etc but I can't get it back. This has happened starting from scratch 3 times now.
I've switched back to the builtin reference implementation JSF (and no Tomahawk), and JDeveloper works fine, so it seems to be a problem using MyFaces. I've added MyFaces and Tomahawk via Manage Libraries.
    This Oracle article - http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/101/howtos/myfaces/index.html
states that the RI version can't be swapped out in JDev Developer Preview version but I understand that's not true now?
    I'm using :-
    JDeveloper SU4
    java 1.5
    Windows XP SP1
    Thanks for any help.

I found the answer. I went to View, Style Rendering and clicked several of the boxes  Display Media was one.

  • Design View independent of Code View

    Hello,
When selecting code in a split screen my design view jumps around assuming what I want to look at.  Can anyone share how to make these independent of each other?  Is it even possibile?
For example if I focus on the bottom of the page and scroll up to the top of my code view section the design view will follow to the top of the page.  Sometimes I would just like to look at my code without the view following me around like my once neglected and now set free from the pound dog.
    Thanks!
    Phil

Hi thanks for the quick response.  Operating in two different windows is not what I am shooting for.
This is what you see in Dreamweaver split view (although typically more thought and design has been used in the interface.) Pretend that the grey bar and slightly reddish grey on the right are the scrollbars that act independently of each view in there respected view.  One scrollbar for the design view and one for the code view in a split set up.
    Source View
    <div>code</div>
    <div>code</div>
    <div>code</div>
    Design View
    Top Div
    Middle Div
    Bottom Div
In the design view I focus the view on the bottom div, the scroll bar is all the way down in the design view.  I touch anything in my code view and it snaps the design view scroll bar back to the top and I am back to looking at the top of the design view.  Can I break this dependancy?  It seems that clicking in the code view refreshes the design view which is the source of frustration.
    Thanks again.
    Phil

Have you tried to open the finished app from the zip? >> Yes, I did. And it works.
Also, as long as it does not crash nothing goes wrong. But once it does, not only the design view goes blank but I cant even execute the project, I will hit 505 error in the browser.
Can you give more info about your environment (OS, memory....)? >> http://s19.postimage.org/ttpxyfk7n/specs.png

  • Why hasn't the tutorial been updated to reflect 4.7's lack of a Design View?

This series uses version 4.5 which is no longer available. It frequently mentions the DESIGN VIEW and how easy it is to use, yet there is NO design view (nor is there a Components tab on the lower left box) in current version 4.7. Not only that, but the code used in several of the first day examples is not valid in Flash Builder 4.7 / Flash Player 11 and the browser refuses to show those examples (btw: most of the examples  still work in 4.7). There are now ActionScript related errors in the examples that demonstrated Design View. You've had 2 years to fix this...
It seems that you  might be shooting yourself in the foot here by:
    1. Not giving new users who want to learn how to work in this environment current information (or at least linbking to new information). This is NOT a way to encourage new customers!
    2. Not showing any work around options - such as linking to Dreamweaver, Illustrator or Flash Pro in some way? or updating the tutorial and showing how to create the components in the code view?
    3. Marketing? Standards? groups within the company need to anticipate and develop fixes BEFORE making such drastic changes - this has NOT been done and it reflects poorly on the product (which is actually pretty cool)!
    What is the alternative?
Aren't there other tools in CC that can be integrated in some already well defined way? i.e. I can edit a menu in Encore by selecting "edit in Photoshop". Why can't something like this be available?
I realize that this is one of Adobe's evolutionary mashup products (ie. Flash uses the timeline that originated in Director, Premiere & AfterEffects use tools acquired from CultEffects and AutoMasker, etc.) so there are many behind the scenes licensing issues that have determined the product evolution (and the products occasionally evolve in unexpected ways) - but it seems a bit contrarian to remove useful features without providing workarounds that users will think are BETTER than the old way!

Why complicate yourself? Adobe has almost pulled itself off from enterprise level flex delevopment to create new HTML5 tooling.
They will not pay to upgrade a training that is on the verge of getting unsupported. Just satisfy your training needs with other resources, such as lynda.com, pluralsight, etc.
Always remember, we are talking about capitalist companies here, if its not done for profit, then its not possible.
