Why did add a new tab button stop working ? it doesn't work any more

Firefox was normal until the add new tab button stopped working I tried to find out why that happened but I couldn’t I tried fixing it , uninstalling it then installing it and other things but nothing seems to work '''please I need help'''

This is normally caused by the Ask toolbar, uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
* Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
* Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

• Can the "ADD-A-NEW-TAB" button be reconfigured to be adjacent to existing tabs (like it used to be)? I am a left-handed tablet user who finds it's position on the far right side of screen very inconvenient.

In previous version of Firefox, the "add-a-new-tab" button has been located to the right of any existing tabs. In the latest version it's been moved to the far right of the screen. In tablet mode, this is too far to reach conveniently for a left-hander. I cannot find any controls to re-configure it to the way it used to be and I can't "drag" it to where I want it. Is there a way to relocate it?

Thanks. I don't know why it wouldn't just go back there when I tried putting it back? I didn't change anything, so I assumed the new "default" was over on the left. Glad it was a simple solution after all.

• Clicking "Open a New Tab" button or "Ctrl+T" doesn't open a new tab any more. How do I get that functionality back?

Clicking "Open a New Tab" button or "Ctrl+T" doesn't open a new tab any more. How do I get that functionality back?
When I click, type or use the File menu or try right-clicking mouse to open a new tab, nothing happens. However I am able to open links in a new tab.

The Ask Toolbar is causing that in the Firefox 3.6.13+ versions. Evidently something in that extension isn't compatible with a Firefox security fix. Disable that extension or un-install it.
How do I "disable" or "un-install it"?

• Why is there no New Tab button?

There is no New Tab button with a "+" symbol on the right of the open tabs. How do I install or enable this please?

Do you see that button if you open the Customize window?
You can open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"

• Add new tab button does not appear at the right of the previous tab

Just upgraded to Firefox 4 and the plus sign (T) for a new tab does not appear on the right of the previous tab as it had in earlier versions. I thought it was there briefly after I upgraded but it's not there anymore. How do I get it back? I did download the extension "new tab at the end" but that didn't help....

That button should be available by default. However, if you use tab related Add-ons it may not show up as expected. You can add it back by right clicking on the navigation bar, clicking Customize, then drag the New Tab icon to the right end of tab bar.
If that doesn't work, please try starting Firefox in Safemode to see if add-ons are indeed interfering.

• Why does Firefox sometimes put the New Tab "+" button to the left of my open tabs instead of to the right?

''dupe of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/932160''
[Re-posted with additional details when I thought this post had failed. Please respond to the other post and ignore this one. My apologies for the duplication.]
In some windows, seems more likely after a crash recovery (but not sure there's a connection), Firefox puts the New Tab "+" button to the left of my tabs instead of the right. This is annoying, because once you're used to clicking it to the right of your open tabs, it's confusing to sometimes find it to the left.
If I go into Customize mode, it still shows the "+" tab on the right, but as soon as I close Customize, it's really still there on the left edge of the screen.
Why does this happen and can I stop it? I have seen no reports of this problem posted by others, but it's been happening for me since at least Version 12 and not fixed by version 13.0.1.

This may be related to session restore.

• Since latest update, every time I start up Firefox the "New Tab" button is gone and I need to re-add it from the "customise toolbar" menu.

I don't know if my settings are not being remembered or what, but the New Tab button is missing each time I open up Firefox.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]

• "Add New Tab" button does not exist in the Window -Customize Toolbar, and not on my Navigator toolbar. Where can I find one to put on my Navigator toolbar, please?

I see "Add New Window" but..."Add New Tab" button does not exist in the Window -Customize Toolbar any longer, and not on my Navigator toolbar. Where can I find one to put on my Navigator toolbar, please?
Thanks

It's the "+" on the Tab bar. You can move it to the Navigation Toolbar if you prefer. When you start Customize, the + moves to the far right end of the Tab bar. You can drag it where you want (see attached image).
Any luck?

• I have 9.0.1 on 2 pc's, both xp sp3. On 1 the 'open new tab' button is visible, on the other, the 'open new tab' button is not even available in the 'customize toolbar' menu for dragging and dropping. Why?

I used the same installation file, but on 1 pc, the 'open new tab' button is available in the 'customize toolbar' menu and can be dragged and dropped onto the navigation bar. On the other pc, the 'open new tab' button/icon is not even available for dragging and dropping. I uninstalled firefox completely, including settings and preferences, then reinstalled, but that did not correct the missing button.

Hi,
Please try '''Restore Default Set''' in the '''Customize...''' window. If it's still not visible, one reason could be that the button is already placed on the toolbar but may be hidden behind another icon or toolbar.

• In Firefox 10, is there a way to add two "Open a new tab" buttons like in Firefox 3.6?

In Firefox 10, is there a way to add two "Open a new tab" buttons like in Firefox 3.6?

This UI change is really stupid and useless. People got used to some specified menu items order. Changing this order could only annoy and anger.
Also the reload button has been relocated. This is another example of stupid Firefox 4 UI change. The good news is that it could easily be relocated to its original place.
It looks like the Firefox developers are suffering from idleness and boredom.
CHANGE IT BACK ASAP!!!

• Why was the "new tab" button option removed from the "customize toolbar" set?

Back in 3.x and older I was able to place a "open new window" button, and an "open new tab" button on the bookmarks toolbar. This worked well for me. Now with 4, the "open new tab" is unavailable, and you can only open a new tab using the default button right next to your already open tabs.
Any chance of that open new tab button coming back? I'd rather use that (what I am used to) than the new one.
They're called options, stop removing them.

You can find the New Tab button showing as a '+' on the Tab bar.
You can open the Customize window and drag the New Tab button from the Tab bar on another toolbar and it will become a regular toolbar button like the New Tab button that you have in Firefox 3 versions.
If you want the New Tab button at the far right end of the Tab bar then place a flexible to the left of it.
Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
