Why did Apple choose new size for iPhone 5?

I am a bit worried that the new physical size of the iPhone 5 will make a great number of existing accessories useless. A own a Tomtom GPS car holder as well as an advanced iPhone holder for my bike, and they are not exactly cheap to buy? How come Apple decided to change the standard size?

The 3 and 3gs, the 4 and 4s...now the 5 and possibly the 5s next year. the accessories worked with each different number of phone released. At any rate, at least they are selling an adapter for the 5 for charging, etc.

  • Why did apple stop makeing ios for iphone 3g?

i've been wondering why you all have stoped making ios for iphone 3's inpurticular because i can't get any up dateed stuff on my iphone?

Because the hardware can't support it. The iPhone 3G is very old, it had to be dropped at some point. All later models are still supported as of now.

  • Why did Apple choose O2 as their carrier in the UK????

Why did Apple choose O2 to be the carrier in the UK when their 3G network is truly awful?
I get 1 bar of signal on 3G most of the time
Wouldn't it have been more useful for Apple to sign with 3 as they are the main 3G carrier in the UK?

I am using my Italian, unlocked, iPhone here in UK with Orange. Coverage is mostly OK and orange has got EDGE when 3G is not available.
I have heard funny stories about O2 coverage but that has nothing to do with the iPhone itselfit is just the network.
I found the T-Mobile site very useful where you can punch 3 postcodes where you mostly are and it will tell you what data and voice coverage you have.
O2 has a similar service but I am told by fellow iPhone users that is not reliable.
Not very useful to have unlimited data if you don't have coverage but you can pop into a cafe and they for sure will have Wifi that you can use.

  • Why did Apple choose 1334x750 for the iPhone 6?

I'm not just an iOS user, I'm also a developer who's thinking about developing for iOS, and I'm wondering what the benefits/detriments of Apple choosing 1334x750 as the resolution for the iPhone 6. It's such a bizarre resolution; I've never seen it anywhere. It seems to make more sense to use 1280x720, which is normal HD.
Question from a user's perspective: Does this make application content fuzzy, scale wrong, misalign, or anything else like that?
Question from a developer's perspective: Is it difficult programming for this resolution, or does Apple naturally scale/interpolate graphics regardless of the app's output resolution(s)?

Anyone here who actually knows is either an Apple employee, or has signed an NDA. Anyone other than these types of people would be guessing.
Apple employees who visit the forum are not permitted to identify themselves as such, and are just users (except for Community Specialists, but they are a separate subject that doesn't affect this thread).
If I were to guess I'd say the pixel pitch is fixed for the Retina display material, and that's the number of pixels that fit at that pitch in a screen the size of the iPhone 6. Doing the math compared to an iPhone 5 series it makes logical sense. Did you notice that the 6 Plus is 1920 x 1080 and has a different pitch from all of the other Retina display iPhones?
To answer the other question you asked, I have never noticed fuzziness or aliasing on any iPhone display.

  • Why is apple not releasing siri for iphone 4

I want siri for my  iphone 4...

    While we're posting I wants:
    1.  I want Nikon to increase the Megapixel on my D5100 to what the newer camera has, 24 Megapixel
    2.  I want Mercedes to up the horsepower on my almost new 2012 to 329 as that's what I've heard the 2013 will have.
    3.  I want Adobe to to upgrade my Photoshop Elements to the newest version, without cost.
That's about all I can think of at the moment.  Let me know when I can have these cool upgrades.

  • Why did apple discontinue Boot Camp support for XP in Lion?

One of the primary reasons I purchased my macbook pro was the presumed ability to boot in either the Mac OS or a microsoft OS.  I need XP for business, but I also have several hundred dollars worth of games and software that requires some pre-vista backwards compatibility to run its best.  I am very disappointed with apple for the following reasons.
I bought my laptop yesterday and today apple's "support" staff informed me that Boot camp no longer supports vista or XP in Lion.
My understanding is that this was a conscious decision by apple and not a passive development because there is a simple workaround, but it requires a snow leapord disk. This means that all the infrastructure is in place for XP or vista to work but apple just chose to disable compatibility. On my support call I was told that older versions of Windows simply "aren't compatible" with Boot Camp or Lion.
This is disappointing because it would seem to suggest that apple is colluding with Windows to promote new software and disable the functionality of the old.  This seems like a blatant anti-trust violation by apple bordering on fraud when you consider the way they market the supposed flexibility of their products.
So Apple, why did you choose to do this?  Your customers deserve an honest answer as to how in the world this serves their needs. Or are you just pimping the products of your competition these days?
Anyways, Steve Jobs is rolling over in his grave right now.

My understanding is that this was a conscious decision by apple and not a passive development because there is a simple workaround, but it requires a snow leopard disk.
That is incorrect. Having an SL disk would not help you. What makes Boot Camp work with a particular Mac is having the Windows drivers for the Apple hardware you have. Apple has to write those to work with the version of Windows they are for. The XP drivers for your new Mac will not be on a Snow Leopard disk.
This seems like a blatant anti-trust violation by apple bordering on fraud when you consider the way they market the supposed flexibility of their products.
Uh, in what way? Apple is not Microsoft. They had no need to make it possible for Mac users to boot into Windows at all. It's there to make Macs more accessible for longtime Windows users who have considered purchasing a Mac, but don't want to have to purchase Mac versions of their possibly extensive software collection, or have certain titles there is no Mac version of. Even newer PC hardware cannot run XP. So is Microsoft also doing something illegal by not providing drivers for this newer hardware?

goodnight. as you know apple has evolved considerably until today but there are people who do not have ability to buy new products. in my case I would like to know why the apple do not let the iphone 3g update to iOS 4.3 as are several applications that can not put on my iphone 3g due to this reason. Why does not Apple make a repository with applications for ios 4.2.1? or else do not work in an update to ios 4.3 on iphone 3g?

This has nothing to do with Apple, as Apple does not make the apps.
This is the decision of the app maker.
Contact those app makers and ask them why they do this.

  • Why did Apple discontinue iPhoto for iOS?

Why did Apple discontinue iPhoto for iOS?
This app offered great features such as the ability to format your pictures and journal and, add comments and context.
It's disappointing to be forced to migrate away especially when this is a paid app ($4.99). Many other companies may stop supporting paid apps, but at least you can still use the apps.

Apple did not say why, so we can only speculate.
But have a look at what has changed in iOS 8. http://www.apple.com/ios/developer/
The basic frameworks, that support image editing apps and any graphics apps have been completely replaced by newer frameworks, for example PhotoKit. Also, the Photos.app and its library are very different, with the Camera Roll being replaced by the "Recent Activity" album.
iPhoto used "Photos" to access all photos on the device and did not them separately. The code would have needed to be completely rewritten. Probably, Apple did not want to develop iPhoto a second time, in addition to the new "Photos", but is relying on the third party developers to supplement Photos with extensions:
    PhotoKit
Developers can enable their photo apps to edit photos directly in the Camera Roll without having to import them first.
    Photo Editing
Developers can embed their filters and editing tools directly into the Photos app. So you could apply third‑party effects to images without leaving the app where you view your photos.

  • Why screen size for iPhone simulator is still 480x320 pixels?

    Hi,
I just upgraded my xcode to 4.2.1 so I have iOS SDK 5.0 now. However, when I create a project, the screen size in simulator for iPhone is 480x320 pixels. I was told the screen size for iPhone/iPad is now 960x640 pixels. Why in simulator it is still old size? What should I do to get the correct size or I am wrong and the actual device is still 480x320 pixels? Thanks.
    Regards,
    Taizhi

    hi,
you change between "iPhone" and "iPhone retina" to simulate both physical resolutions.
For the project it doesn't matter because the logical resolution is still 320 x 460 "Points". The OS does most of the work for you.

  • Lanyard headphones: why did apple discontinue them for ipod nano?

i'd love to purchase the new generation of ipod nano (i need more HD space on my 2nd gen ipod nano), but i have a basic need for the lanyard style headphones. i can't bring myself to wear the old style headphones (i have many bad memories of dropping the lanyard-less ipods).
i have never had a problem with the lanyard design in the 4+ years that i've used them. why did apple stop production?
and, more importantly, does apple have any plans to bring back lanyard headphones in the future?
    thank you.

Since we are all end users like you, nobody here would have the answers to such questions.  Only apple knows.  Either way, I suggest you leave feedback to Apple through one of their feedback channels.

  • Why did all my music on my iphone get erased when i tried to sync to the iTunes on my new laptop?

why did all my music on my iphone get erased when i tried to sync to the iTunes on my new laptop?

As a rule syncing is one way, from the library to the device. There should have been a warning that media content on the device would be removed and replaced with that in the local library. If the content were still on the device it could be recovered with the steps in Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. You can redownload your qualifying past purchases from the iTunes Store, Amazon store, etc. Do you have the previous computer your device synced with, or a backup, from which the library could be recovered?

  • HT204074 Why did apple set a 90 day lock out to apple devices?

Why did apple set a 90 day lock out to apple devices? I bought my dad a new iphone 5s. He decided to give me his old iphone 4s but i cant download my purchased programs from my apple ID. I got a notification saying that the phone is associated/identified with another apple ID then automatically locked my apple id for 90days. I dont understand why they had to set a 90 day timer.

"Why did apple set a 90 day lock out to apple devices?"
No one can tell you why Apple makes the decions that they do and discussing their decisions/policies is not allowed here.

From your point of view and the framing of your question, Apple does indeed support WIndows better than Mac for the limited issue of iCloud.
    chewy cabeza wrote:
...YET, Leopard and Snow Leopard are NOT iCloud compatible. How can that be justified? Obviously, Apple can make iCloud available to Snow Leopard, but disdains us...
Historically speaking, Apple has rarely gone backwards in its OS development.  Once they have released a new OS with new technology, I can only think of one example of when they backtracked:  They released TrueType technology in System 7 and then released System 6.0.8, which included TrueType technology for continuing System 6 users.
So it is part of their culture to move forward and not backwards.  Other examples:
    •  Inclusion of the then novel SONY 3.5" disk drive in its release of the first Macintosh (and not the industry standard 5.25" drive); after its use in the Lisa and adoption for the Apple II series of computers.
    •  Elimination of the floppy drive completely in the release of the first iMac.
    •  Use of then novel AAC audio compression as "state of the art" compression for the iPod release in 2001 instead of the outdated mp3 standard.
    •  Refusal to allow use of FLASH in iPod Touch/iPhone/iPads.
How could they justify these decisions?  The marketplace justified them for Apple!
So, yes, they could release 10.6.9 with iCloud support.  But why now, if not then?

Why did apple screw up the discussion forum format?

    Hi,
Apple in this case has to rely on what software is out there that can handle the amount of Traffic that these boards get.
This is from the Brows Option the selecting People in the box
    Note the Number
At the Launch of the new software this was at just over 2,250,000 and has now topped 2,300,000
That is well over 50,000 people joining in just 2 weeks.
Jive are the only real players in this market.
To some extent the software is a one size fits all, much like the previous software was.
We got used to the look and the Folder type layout of the Previous software.
We ignored the foibles of where things were placed.
Things are somewhat double edged in my view.
    I post mostly about iChat.
I don't like that the Leopard and Snow Leopard forums that were are now "Refine the List"/Tag led searching to read specific threads. (not to mention that returning to "Dicussions" loses the "refinement").
On the other hand those same threads and anwsers are now a lot more viewable in the OS forums than the subforums of before.
As a regular poster I use a couple of Boiler plate things for a welcome message and my Signature.
Some were made with TextExpander and included the HTML code to sttyle things slightly.
These no longer work without going to the HTML editor.
Posting link used to use the BBCodeXtra add-on to Firefox but this action is now included in the Regular and Advanced Editor.
That means I equipped myself and used things to get around shortcomings of the old software which is some cases I either don't need or need to learn the new way.
I am sure the Style will morph as we go along.
Of course some of this relies on what exactly you mean by:-
