Why did I have to choose my disc on Startup?

My company purchased a new intel imac (installed with LION) in December.  This morning when I turned on my computer, I had to choose the disk I wanted to startup from.  I have my internal HD and then an iomega external HD for time machine to back up to.
Why did this happen?  Should I be concerned about my hardware?

On very rare occasion the OS can "forget" where the startup volume is, this is no big deal. If it happens as mentioned earlier in System Preferences - Startup Disk ensure the internal HD is highlighted then click Restart to test it. Also it's wise to follow Apple's instructions about shutting down your computer, please read page 16 in your owner's manual where Apple provides instructions on when sleep and shutdown are recommended.

Correct.  When you purchase devices, they would have stated the OS they needed to work, on the box.  This can be overlooked, but it is very important to check when purchasing.
You current OS, is so old, that they technology build into the new devices, is not something your OS understands.  It didn't exist when your OS was created, and therefore you need to upgrade the OS to work with the newer technology of these devices.
10.6 software is not downloadable.  You must purchase a DVD disc.  You can order it from the on-line apple store

  • Why do I have to choose my cable provider to watch a show

Why do I have to choose my cable provider to watch a show

Some of the apps on AppleTV require that you have a service provider account (cable or satellite, for example) to legally access the content. This is a contractual arrangement, not a technical issue.

  • Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

File Sharing failed between my Mavericks iMacs.  The console logs showed that the target iMac saw the ntlmv2 protocol as unknown to the kdc.  I fixed it by enabling Windows File Sharing on the target Mavericks iMac.  I had tried disabling SMB on both iMacs and leaving AFP on, but then nothing happened when I tried to connect.  Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

When you enable file sharing you need to have either SMB (Windows) or AFP (historically Apple-native) file sharing checked. The default in Mavericks is SMB, and not AFP.
If you uncheck both, then the system will turn off file sharing. Apple supports the use of both SMB and AFP connections in Mavericks, so with only AFP enabled you should have been able to establish a connection, but there could be a small bug or configuration-specific snafu that you're encountering.
With AFP enabled only, try pressing Command-K in the Finder to open the Connect To Server dialogue, and in here enter the address to the system using afp:// as the protocol, such as the following (the name can be looked up in the Sharing system preferences):
    afp://my_imac.local

Apple is not here. Apple does not answer questions here.
There are only users here who have no idea the answer to your question whith so little information. What year did you buy your Mac and your daughter's Mac. What MacBook model's are they both? From whom did you buy them, directly from Apple or a 3rd party vender? The more details the better to offer ideas.

I cant even get into itunes because it wont recognize it to do a reboot or a rollback.

  • Why did I have to create a new ID when I logged into Communities this morning? Appears I don't have any history anymore either.

Why did I have to create a new ID when I logged into Communities this morning? Appears I don't have any history anymore either. I used the same browser and username/password (its stored in my browser) and it asked me to fill out my profile and pick an alias. Not sure what the deal was, it appears Apple can't figure out this whole id thing. I've used other community sites for over a decade without having to change my user/profile, I don't understand why this is such a pain with Apple.

Agreed! I was trying to find out how to reclaim my old name since I use it for all sites. I can't seem to find the answer so I made a new one to ask questions before giving up on it.

  • Why did you have to change the layout of Firefox?

I would like to know why you have gone and changed the layout of Firefox?
I am still on Fx 3.6.18 because quite frankly 5.0.1 looks horrible.
Why did you have to change everything and move things around. Why couldn't you have given us the same layout as 3.6.18 but with these new upgrades.
I will never download Fx5. 3.6 was perfect.
Also how can I contact Fx without upgrading?

Sorry the old Feedback page - Hendrix - used with older versions of Firefox was disabled near the end of 2010.
In Firefox 4+ versions there's a Help > Submit Feedback... menu item which leads here: http://input.mozilla.com/en-US/feedback <br />
But you can't submit feedback there with an older version of Firefox, currently you need Firefox 5.0 or higher.
The decision to change the GUI was made by Mozilla collectively, not by a small group of developers or by one person. If you put your efforts toward customizing Firefox to suit your tastes, it would be a lot more productive than trying to find out who to blame and where to complain about the changes made to Firefox. Geez dude, it ain't the end of the world. It's only a web browser, which can be easily modified to make it look like you thing it should look.

  • HT204370 why did i have to buy the movie again if i allready bought it?

why did i have to buy the movie again if i allready bought it? i want my money back

You can't get a new DVD, which is what RG said. VUDU, the download service Walmart resells, is a different subject and not what RG was referring to.
But what some other company can allow is irrelevent to the issue. From the iTunes Store, movies can be re-downloaded only in the US, and then only from those movie studios that have allowed it. This is not by Apple's choice; it's completely the choice of the movie studios. If your movie is not available under the Purchased section of your iTunes Store account, then redownloading is available only if you purchase the movie again.

  • Why did I have a kernel panic?

I was in the process of disconnecting my Nikon D40 (a procedure I have done many times without incident). Usually I shut the camera off and pull out the USB connector once the volume disappears from my desktop, with no problem. This time, as soon as I shut off the camera, I got a strange "You must restart your computer" message I'd never seen before (I've had the computer almost 3 years). Discovered this was a "kernel panic" message.
Why did my computer do this? The only thing that's changed on it recently is that I installed Adobe Air although I don't believe I was running any Air applications at the time. At the time I was running Photoshop Elements, Nikon Picture Project, Firefox and a feed reader called Feedpopper. Again I have run all these programs without trouble for several years.
Here is the message from panic.log:

Perhaps try it again and see if it was just a bad alignment of the planets last time. You could also post more of the log to see which thread it was that actually crashed and what was happening. In the meantime this will keep you busy:

  • Why did I have to enter IP address manually

I could use a little help. I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n and a Motorola modem for connecting to Comcast. I also have two Macs and an iPhone.
All of this was working fine up until very early this morning. And then it just stopped working. After trying everything else I could think of, I finally connected my MacBook Pro directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable. And that worked fine. But I noticed that the "automated" Comcast DHCP information was different than the supposedly automated data on my Airport Extreme.
So I reconnected my Airport Extreme router and entered the information manually under the "Internet" tab. This information I entered includes:
    - IP Address
    - Subnet Mask
    - Router Address
    - and DNS addresses
But I'm puzzled. Why did my Airport Extreme not obtain and use the proper Comcast addresses when I had it set to "Configure IPv4: Using DHCP" … even when I powered down both the modem and the router, and restarted???
Can anyone suggest a fix for my problem?
    Thanks,
    -AstraPoint

    William:
Thanks for your interest in this. Here are some more details. When my Internet connection stopped working yesterday I reviewed my Airport Extreme (Gigabit) "Internet" settings using the Airport Utility. Everything looked OK. I was using "Configure IPv4 Using DCHP." The AE had a green light, and the various settings from Comcast were all populated ... and I noticed that all of the Comcast IP addresses (including the router and DNS servers all started with "68."
Then I disconnected my AE unit from the Motorola modem, and connected my MacBook Pro directly to the modem using Ethernet. And it worked! I could access the Internet. I then looked at my MBP "Internet" settings in the Network section of System Prefs. Again I was using "Configure IPv4 Using DCHP," but I noticed that the IP addresses being served up by Comcast were different. Both my IP address and the Comcast Router address started with "71." (and not "68.").
So I copied all of the TCP/IP settings from the Network Prefs panel on my MacBook Pro, and entered them manually into my AE. And then my Internet connection worked just fine. It's still working some 20 hours later, and I'm still using the manual TCP/IP setup on my AE.
But I'm concerned that my AE was not picking up the correct TCP/IP settings from Comcast via DHCP. I would like to go back to using DHCP, but I would like to know what went wrong yesterday before I do.

  • Why did I have more than 120gb of asl files stored on my computer?

My computer was telling me that my hard drive was full. When I pulled up Finder the amount of free space on my hard drive was jumping up and down even though I wasn't doing anything. I don't have that much on my computer, so I couldn't figure out why all my memory was gone. I looked around on forums and was able to find 120 gb of crap in the asl folder. Why did this happen and how do I prevent this from happening again????

In this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/9122845#9122845 it was a problem with Javascript and a certain Weather Chanel Screensaver.
If you work you way through the other links shown in the "More Like This"-section on the right side you might find some more reasons/solutions to the ASL-problem.
I am thankful that I don't have it...

  • What is a PRAM reset and why did I have to do it ?

My very new (4 days) 20" Aluminium iMac was getting quite noisy, so much so that I called for support today.
The Apple tech explained how to do a 'P.RAM' reset, which in fairness does seem to have resolved the issue. (something to do with a FAN, I think).
I would like to know more about the causes of this, and why would I have to do it a such a new machine ?
Is there something wrong with my machine ? What are the chances I wil have to do this again ?
    Thanks....

All, thank you for your time and valuable information. I am relieved that nothing is wrong with my system, but I must say that I find it is a little odd that a user has to do take these steps after making hardware or software changes to the system. I would expect this to be done as part of the install routines. Perhaps that is why other (you know who) systems need rebooting after most hardware or software changes.
I know Apple like to be seen as the machines where such things are not required, but clearly they are !
    Thanks again.
