Why did iDVD 6 take more than 14 hours to encode 24 minutes of video?

Hello,
This is my first post here and even being a total Mac beginner it surprised me when idvd 06 took more than 14 hours to encode and burn a 24 minute imovie project to dvd. Does anybody know WHY this happened? I bought this machine to do nothing but video editing, but if this is the way it's going to be I will have no choice but to return it to the store and try something else. I have an iMac Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz 17"/160GB/250GB external/1GB RAM
I hope somebody can explain what happened, because the capture/edit/create dvd process was a breeze, and I used the "Best Performance" option.
Thanks
Luis

Round here we spell 'idiot' as 'inexperienced'
Encoding/rendering is the same whether you 'save as disk image' or straight to a burn via iDVD, less of course the burn time which comes later. BTW, I use Toast 7 to burn, not disk utility. More options. Burn time, including 'verification' is about 50% of the running time, or a little less.
The main advantage of saving to a disk image is that you can burn as many copies as you like from it without having to re-encode from scratch. This becomes ultra-important when it is a wedding video that every relative and their dog want a copy of!
I have a G5 iMac, not as fast as a dual Intel machine, but does what I want. My son has a Macbook Pro (Intel). The main difference is that an iMac can house a much bigger hard disk that a Macbook.
I can't say for sure, but I simply assume that a desktop Mac is faster than a portable laptop, even if they have the same processor. (200 Level 4 contributors will now pile in to tell me that I must be nuts.) Just my gut feeling. But yes, a Mac Pro will be faster than anything else - one of the reasons they are twice the price (and no monitor).
If you are going to do video editing for a living then use a Mac Pro with Final Cut Pro. If it is a hobby, an Imac with the biggest hard disk it can take and lots of RAM will easily suffice. The choice of software is yours.
And while we are it: burn at the slowest speed you can, 2x or 4x, a slow burn gives a better burn! Also, use decent media. I have never had a 'coaster' from Verbatim or Fuji DVD-R, but lots from all other brands I have tried. Others here say Maxell are also very good.
Most of all: HAVE FUN!

  • Why did I have more than 120gb of asl files stored on my computer?

    My computer was telling me that my hard drive was full. When I pulled up Finder the amount of free space on my hard drive was jumping up and down even though I wasn't doing anything. I don't have that much on my computer, so I couldn't figure out why all my memory was gone. I looked around on forums and was able to find 120 gb of crap in the asl folder. Why did this happen and how do I prevent this from happening again????

    In this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/9122845#9122845 it was a problem with Javascript and a certain Weather Chanel Screensaver.
    If you work you way through the other links shown in the "More Like This"-section on the right side you might find some more reasons/solutions to the ASL-problem.
    I am thankful that I don't have it...

  • Have windows 7, newest update for itunes, why does it take more than one attempt to listen to a preview of song, sometimes it neve lets me listen to the whole preview, any suggestions? please help.

    any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    Okay.
    Warning in advance: experimental advice.
    The way that some of these have been responding to cache resets, but some haven't, has been making me wonder if we've got some form of trouble in the cache.db file. If the trouble is minor, a cache reset can fix it. But if the trouble is of the right/wrong sort, it might also prevent a cache reset from going through properly. (Similar things can happen with Safari for Windows preferences/settings/database files.) If that's what is afoot with you, then we might be able to get past this by manually removing the cache.db.
    Quit iTunes before proceeding.
    To get at the cache.db, first we'd need to change some view settings on the PC.
    In your Start menu, open Computer.
    In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
    In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
    Now, in Computer, open your C:\, drive.
    Open the "Users" folder.
    Open the folder with the name of your Windows user account.
    Open the "AppData" folder.
    Open the "Local" folder.
    Open the "Apple Computer" folder.
    Open the "iTunes" folder.
    Drag the Cache.db file out of the folder and onto your desktop.
    Launch iTunes and visit the Store again. Can you get full previews now?

    I can tell you that this is some of the absolutely worst customer service I have ever dealt with. I found out from a store employee that when they are really busy with calls, they have third party companies taking overflow calls. One of those companies is Xerox. What can a Xerox call center rep possibly be able to authorize on a Verizon account?  I'm Sure there is a ton of misinformation out there due to this. They don't note the accounts properly or so everyone can see them. I have been transferred before and have asked if they work for Verizon or a third party also and was refused an answer so, apparently they aren't required to disclose that information. I spent a long time in the store on my last visit and it's not just customers that get the runaround. It happens to the store employees as well and it's beyond frustrating.

  • RMAN archive backup takes more than 1 hour.

    Hello,
    We execute the following command from HP Data Protector 5.50 in order to backup archives from an Oracle 8.1.7 database running in HP-UX 11.00:
    run {
    allocate channel 'dev_0' type 'sbt_tape'
    parms 'ENV=(OB2BARTYPE=Oracle8,OB2APPNAME=inf,OB2BARLIST=Oracle_Archivers_Inf)';
    allocate channel 'dev_1' type 'sbt_tape'
    parms 'ENV=(OB2BARTYPE=Oracle8,OB2APPNAME=inf,OB2BARLIST=Oracle_Archivers_Inf)';
    allocate channel 'dev_2' type 'sbt_tape'
    parms 'ENV=(OB2BARTYPE=Oracle8,OB2APPNAME=inf,OB2BARLIST=Oracle_Archivers_Inf)';
    sql 'alter system switch logfile'
    sql 'alter system archive log current'
    backup
    filesperset 1
    format 'Oracle_Archivers_Inf<inf_%s:%t:%p>.dbf'
    archivelog until time 'SYSDATE-2'
    delete input;
    backup
    filesperset 1
    format 'Oracle_Archivers_Inf<inf_%s:%t:%p>.dbf'
    archivelog all;
    This process takes more than 2 hours for just 3 GB and we don't think this is network issue.
    Is our RMAN command doing more thinks than just archives backup?
    Almost at the end of backup we get following message:
    Default exp binary /INF/oracle/app/product/8.1.7/bin/exp/ is used for catalog export.
    Does this message mean an export is done at the end of archive backup?
    Note that message belongs it is more than 2 hours later.
    Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    Carles

    Yes, it appears one of your utilities is doing an export backup, check HP Data Protector settings.

  • Why does it take more space for pictures to be stored in iPad than iPhone?

    Why does it take more space for pictures to be stored in iPad than iPhone?
    The same pictures in iPhone utilises half the storage space than in the iPad.

    Photos on the ipad should take up little  more space than It does on The iPhone because of the screen resolutions size.
    Keep in mind If the photos are being stored on the device by Photo stream they will Take up less Space or if The photo Are being store by itunes syncing they may take up a little more.

    When recording a Video demo slide in Captivate 8, pressing the [END] key takes more than a minute to stop the recording. Why is there such a lag? Additionally, the software I record experiences terrible lag times. For instance, It may take 15 seconds to display a 2-digit number I typed into a blank field. the same software has no lag issues when I'm not recording it.

    Yes and no. The CPTX file is on my PC. Our software that I'm making the demo of is on the network. but I'm not the "IT Guy" so I can't provide specifics; however, I work at a computer software company and we probably have more servers than employees. The network hardware is kept current. I've been making similar tutorials for 10 years and haven't run into this issue until switching to the subscription Captivate.

    XDCAM 1080i60 format with Chroma rendering 30 minute episode take more than 17 hours is it usually?

    All depends on the system...
    If by "Chroma rendering" you mean chroma key rendering then it seems quite slow (but I cut on a hopped up
    8X 3.2GHz Mac Pro with a lot of everything, so slow is relative.)
    If you mean something like a Magic Bullet Colorista "treatment", that's another story. I've seen that increase renders by as much as 25X the duration, i.e., a 30 minute show might take 12-15 hours on a slow machine.

  • Why do I need more than 1 disk on a NLE system?

    This question is often asked and a lot of people still think they can get away with a single disk or maybe 2 disks for a video editing system.
    It would be relatively easy to tell you that a SATA disk is half duplex, so traffic can go only one way at a time, either reading or writing, and the other traffic has to wait until the first data streams have completed, before the next direction gets full attention, but that is rather technical and may not appeal to many, so let me put it to you in another way.
    Whatever you do during editng, there comes a moment when you have to export your final result, be that for the web, to BD or DVD, it does not matter, the only thing relevant is that you need to EXPORT your final results and that is where the disk(s) come into play.
    Bill Gehrke and I have been testing this extensively and let me make my final argument here.
    We have a very simple SD DV AVI timeline of three hours duration, no effects, no transitions, single track only. We exported that to SD DV AVI and wrote that file to disk. Simple, no calculations required, no effects, no transitions, no scaling, no frame blending, nothing to complicate matters further. The intent was only to show the impact of the disk setup on export times. It may not be relevant to your case, but it does show the impact of a good disk setup and as such translates to your EXPORT times equally.
    We tested with the following disk configurations:
    Harm i7-3930K, (OC) 4.7, 64 GB, GTX 680, 3 x 7 Raid3 striped to Raid30
    BillG i7-980X, (OC) 4.4, 24 GB, GTX 680, 1 x 8 Raid0 15K SCSI disks
    BillG i7-2600K, stock, 32 GB, GTX 660, single SSD, OCZ Vertex4
    BillG i7-2600K, stock, 32 GB, GTX 660, single HDD, Seagate 7200.12
    This is what we found after many test runs:
    This clearly shows the impact of disk setup on export times.
    I rest my case.

    The test is supposed to demonstrate "the impact of disk setup on export times" yet there are no changes or variations in any of the bench configurations?
    What do you mean? Your major complaint about PPBM5 was the changes or variations in configurations, something taken out of the picture.
    Why not test the most common configurations (2- or 3-drive RAID0) and vary the setup for each, e.g. break a 2-drive RAID0 and see how that impacts export times?
    For the illiterate benchmark readers,  export times are linearly related to sustained write speeds, so breaking up a 2 disk raid0 into 2 single disks will almost double export times. Breaking up a 3 disk raid0 into individual disks will almost triple export times. And what both you and Jeff forget, is that benchmark tests have to be short in duration. It is easy to make a benchmark that takes at least 30 minutes on a very fast system, but cripples an average system and will take more than 24 hours. Not very feasible, right?
    Also really curious about the alleged evil of SATA's single-duplex operation.  Any proof yet?
    SATA is not single duplex, it is half duplex. Yes, when the timeline does not fit memory and has to be read from disk and then be written to disk the penalty in export times can get as high as 40-50%.
    The point that Jeff and you seem to miss completely is that a single disk will be around 17 times slower than a fast disk setup in the best of circumstances and that will go up to around 30 times slower when fill rates increase. In this test it may not amount to much total time, what is 6 minutes, but with - as you like to put it - many short YouTube exports daily, it will add up quickly.
    Writing a 25 GB ISO file to disk for later burning to BDR will be between 17 - 30 times slower on a single disk system than on a fast disk system. If you both want to tell me that is irrelevant, go ahead and make your opinion known,
    export times are not relevant for editors... but I wonder how many would agree with you.

  • Light Switch 2011 "C#" How to allow filter which take more than one entry to take * and show all other entries?

    Dear All,
    I have created the following code which extended my filter functionality and allowed a to take more than one entry (Comma have to be inserted after
    each entry).
    For example:
    "Country Filter" can take ----> Germany,Egypt,Holand<o:p></o:p>
    "City Filter " can take ---------> Berlin,Münster
    if (Country_PAR != null)
    String[] Country_Array = Country_PAR.Split(new Char[] { ','});
    query = from p in query where Country_Array.Contains(p.Hotel_Country) select p;
    if (City_PAR != null)
    String[] City_Array = City_PAR.Split(new Char[] {','});
    query = from p in query where City_Array.Contains(p.Hotel_City) select p;
    Now want to extend it more and say something like:
    If  * is included ---- > Give me all entries
         ex. Ge*     This will give me everything which starts with Ge
    If <> is entred -----> Give me entries which are not equal to a certain entry

    Why did they take out the add all songs option with IOS7

    I can not read the minds of the Adobe engineers or Marketing people. Nesting a sequence is not much more trouble than applying an effect.
    If you are creating a PIP, then a nested sequence is probably your solution. If you are not nesting, scale and crop, then put a white matte under it.
    This is not a great place for asking questions that have no answers outside of internal Adobe decisions. This is, however, a great place to get workarounds.

  • Ldap search query takes more than 10 seconds

    LDAP query takes more than 10 seconds to execute.

    The query is executing with less than 10 seconds in most of the cases, but it takes more than 10 seconds in some cases. The total number of users available in the ldap is less than 1500.

    Please post your suggestions to resolve this issue .
    1.How we can find out , why the query is taking more than 10 seconds ?
    2.Next steps to resolve this issue .

    Hi Marco,
    Thanks for your suggestions.
    Sorry for replying late. I was out of office for few weeks.
    1) Have you already tuned the caches? (entry cache, db cache, filesystem cache?)
    We are using db cache and we have not done any turning for cache. The application was working fine and there was no much changes in the number of users .
    2) Unfortunately we don't have direct access to the environment and we have contacted the responsible team to verify the server health during the issue .
    Regarding the IO operations we can see that, load balancer is pinging the ldap sever every 15 seconds to check the status of ldap servers which yields a new connection on every hit. (on average per minute 8 connections - )
    3) We using cn=dsameuser to bind the directory server. Other configuration details for ldap
    LDAP Connection Pool Minimum Size: 1
    LDAP Connection Pool Maximum Size:10
    Maximum Results Returned from Search: 1700
    Search Timeout: 10
    Is the Search Timeout value configured is proper ? ( We have less than 1500 user in the ldap server).
    Also is there any impact if the value Maximum Results Returned from Search = set to 1700. ( The Sun document for AM says that the ideal value for this is 1000 and if its higher than this it will impact performance.
    The application was running without time out issue for last 2 years and there was no much increase in the number of users in the system. ( at the max 200 users added to the system in last 2 years.)
    Thanks,
    Jay
