Why did it take 12 hours to load iOS 6.0.1?

Yes, 12 hours, on a computer that otherwise has a very fast internet connection. And when I connected my iPad this morning and was invited to download iOS 6 for that, I was told it was going to take 7 hours. Knowing as I do that the estimates given by Apple are always ludicrously optimistic I bailed out and will soldier on with iOS 5 rather than have the iPad tied up for at least half a day.
This is not just an iOS 6 issue. The same thing has happened with every software update I've downloaded. I've been a loyal Mac user for 20 years but my faith is regularly being shaken these days to the point where I can actually contemplate jumping ship to Android.
Incidentally, when I was asked to name a category for this post there was no option to choose iOS simply as software. Why, when every desktop software release is listed, is iOS 5 or iOS 6 not listed except in relation to other apps/packages? Sometimes I despair.

i feel your frustration, but in truth at least the updates are less often than Microsofts. i hate it when i need some info my machine is running like the hard drive is made of syrup, then wants to restart. last time i had over 50 updates and took over an hour to sort itself out ;(.
Not sure why you have this problem so regularly, only to sayApple servers will be far more busy when pumping these updates out, given the enormous user base, all i can say is both my ip4s and my ipad2 took Around 15 minutes each to instal 6.01, but may have downloaded it in the background overnight.
you say you have a fast connection but have actually you run 'speedtest' to see if your getting near for what you pay for? i'm on BTInfinity allegedly 'superfast' broadband, i pay for 40 megs but feel lucky to get 20 megs.

  • Why does it take 121 hours to load a movie on AppleTV?

Why does it take 121 hours to load a movie on AppleTV? We are connected to Wifi with a good signal, but nothing seems to work well. We can play music for awhile, but then it just drops us.  Tried apple support, not available 'til tomorrow.  Purchased yesterday.
Actually we watched the movie yesterday, and now it has to load again.  It's on the ipad and plays, no problem.  Want to watch it on the tv.  Any Thoughts?
    Ready to take it back.

Apple TV has no accessible storage, it will need to load each time. The time it takes is dependent on your network.
What is your current connection via speedtest.net
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
The signal/network test on the device won't give a proper indication if there is a network issue. You will need to try ethernet to help rule that out, and it will also help to get a network report (istumbler, netstumbler or similar. It will show signal strength and noise as well as nearby networks)

  • Why does it take 3 hours to download a movie

Why does it take 3 hours to download a movie on apple tv?  Is there a solution??

What kind of internet connection speed do you have?
If you have 3Mbps DSL like I do, and are renting movies on either Apple TV model in HD Format, then it will take quite a while. Actually 3 Hours for an HD Movie would be failry fast here at my home. They are just large files. If I'm going to rent an HD movie, I will usually rent it earlier in the day and watch it when I'm ready.
If you have an adequate internet connection, and just want to rent movies on the fly and don't care about HD, on the AppleTV v2 you can go to Settings / General / iTunes Store / Video Resolution... and select Standard Definition. With our 3Mbps DSL connection, when we rent a movie it is generally "Ready to Play..." within about 2 minutes at the most (enough time to grab a beer and get comfortable)
As far as I know, Standard Definition movies still show on the same menu as the HD version with the ATV v1. I preferred that menu format myself because you didn't have to change the option in settings when you wanted to go back and forth.

  • What is indexing and why does it take 122 hours?

What is indexing and why has it slowed my computer and why does it take 122 hours?

Indexing allows Spotlght to know where everything is on your computer.  It won't take as long as it says, the times it gives are always vastly inflated.

  • Why does it take 12 hours to process a 2 hr. in imovie 11

Why does it take 12 hours to process a 2 hr movie to quick time?

iMovie is designed to create simple home movies, not theatrical-length features.
iMovie does all rendering in a single pass when you share the movie, so the longer the movie and the more complex the effects used, it can overwhelm the memory in your computer. I would normally say keep your movies to 30 minutes or less, but there is always an exception to the rule. Some people are able to get more.
If you are able to complete a 2 hour movie in 12 hours, you must have a pretty powerful Mac. Many Macs would crash long before then.
Final Cut Pro X is the tool for theatrical length movies. Final Cut Pro X allows rendering to occur in smaller chunks, so it doesn't have to happen all at the end. When you share the final movie, you are patching together many segments that have already been rendered.
However, as I learn FCP, I have discovered that most pros do not edit a 2 hour movie on a single timeline. They create it in logical scenes, and then only put them all together at the end. They do this for performance reasons, and so in case something goes wrong, the problem is isolated. When they get ready to create their final 2 hour movie, they drag completely rendered scenes to a clean timeline and output the final movie.

  • Why would it take 4 hours to download a two hour movie rental.

Why would it take 4 hours to download a two hour movie rental.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It's likely network related, have you checked your internet download speed (speedtest.net) or tried anything to eliminate interference on you local network.

  • Why did they take away the "Open In New Tab"option in Top Sites, Bookmarks, and History?

Why did they take away the "Open In New Tab"option in Top Sites, Bookmarks, and History? This very annoying.

Seriously - what could they have possibly been thinking? Mozilla, please tell us this was some kind of mistake. Accessing our bookmarks in FF-mobile is just plain bad as a user experience. And now without "Open In New Tab" we are supposed to drill down to our bookmarks for every tab we want to open? FF-mobile is almost useless without "Open In New Tab". Please restore "Open In New Tab" for bookmarks, thanks.

  • Why will it take 26  hours to download a rented movie?

Why will it take 26+ hours to download a rented movie?

For watching a movie only the download speed matters, and 4 mbps is OK, not great but good enough to start streaming a movie in about 10 minutes or less (rentals don't have to download all the way to begin watching).
Something else is clogging the pipe ... is the ATV connected to the router via Ethernet, or over Wi-Fi?  Wi-Fi is normally faster than your ISP service, but there might be router settings that are getting in the way of the Wi-Fi connection.  Ethernet may be faster, at least to see if it works better, or there might be port settings on your router that need to be optimized (sorry, can't help you there).
I've also heard that changing your router's DNS address may help things (try OpenDNS's addresses "208.67.222.220" or "208.67.222.222", or Google's DNS "8.8.4.4" or "8.8.8.8").

  • When I rent a movie using Apple TV, it takes several hours to load and then I select watch later. When I go to my rented movies and try to watch it , it starts loading all over again. This can't be normal. Is there something that I am doing wrong?

When I rent a movie using Apple TV,it takes several hours to load. At this point, I opt to watch later. When I try to watch the movie, it starts loading again and tells me that it will be ready to watch in one hour forty four minutes. This can't be normal. Is there something I am doing wrong? Any suggestions.

If it's taking several hours then that is likely due to your internet connection. You can verify at speedtest.net
    6mbps required for instant 720P
    8mbps for 1080P
You can switch to SD in the settings (which only requires 3mbps)
You can also check istumbler or netstumbler for interference
Make sure you are on your ISPs DNS
The reloading is normal. There is no accessible storage on ATV. The small flash is used for caching streamed content, if you access other things or turn the device off it will be flushed.

  • HT3951 why would it takes 15 hours to download a movie rental on my computer?

Why would it take 15 hours to download a movie rental on my laptop this year, and last year it worked?

What is the download speed of your ISP? Go to speedtest.net and test it and report back.
I downloaded two HD movies over the weekened at about 3.2GB each and it took less then 30 minutes each.

It always has a very high number at the beginning, but it never takes that long....
However, it can take several hours....I've found this to be true on any device or computer I've downloaded movies or tv shows on - Mac, PC, iPad, Kindle Fire....you name it.
However, even if it does take a long time, that does not prevent you from starting to watch it as soon as it has done a little downloading. Here is the Apple link for typical download times:

i just upgraded my apple TV and now when I rent a movie on iTunes, instead of it playing instantly, it takes 60 hours to load. Anyone else have this problem?

Apple Support, I have just purchased 3 movies 2 from my account and 1 from my wifes account and both systems are stating that it will take 2 days to download.  I have a FIOS 150 megabit per second up and 150 megabit per second down busiuness class fiber service to my location.  I have tested downloading 10Gbyte files from two other locations and both work fine.  I additionally went out and have tested doing speed tests (http://www.speedtest.net/) from over 10 other locations all over the US and all are over 75 magabits per second download speeds with a few hitting 100 and 125 megabit per second speeds.  What is wrong with your servers or your internet connection????
    This is VERY FUSTRATING!!!
I have additionally tried to download them with my Apple TV and two different PCs all wired on Gigabit Ethernet with jumbo frames enabled.  I have tried differnet DNS servers also.  I can upload and download files to my office 50G in less than 1 hour.  I have also download movies from 2 other movie sites without any problems.

  • Western iso 8859-1 character set is gone, "other (including Western" does not work. Why did you take it out?

Some websites need Western ISO 8859-1 character set to run properly and you have taken it away in favour of "other(including Western)", now the site does not work properly. Why did you take it out and can you please put it back.

ISO-8859-1 and Windows-1252 should be equivalent. Can you provide an example of a page that doesn't display properly?
If you have to manually select a character encoding to view the page correctly, then the site is broken and you should notify its owner that it needs be fixed. Websites specify the character encoding in one of two ways:
    * [http://www.w3.org/International/tutorials/tutorial-char-enc/ Handling character encodings in HTML and CSS | W3C]
    # The ''Content-Type'' response header.
    # The ''meta'' tag in the page source.
    ''Henri Sivonen (:hsivonen) wrote:''
<blockquote>We are in the process of implementing http://encoding.spec.whatwg.org/ . The process involves removing support for legacy character decoders that aren’t really necessary for supporting existing Web content.</blockquote>

  • Why did iTunes take out the category, "AIFF or mp3 encoder" on their latest version?

I make CDs for use in my carr so it is valuable to me to know which version of a song is on iTunes:  either AIFF, or mp3.  The previous versions offered these specs for a category as a column listing in the library but the latest version doesn't;  if you don't remember where you last had it set you have to check in prefs., then hit "import settings" which is annoying when you're compiling for a CD.
Why did they take that category out (under "view options") or am I wrong and you can tell me where I can find it?
    Thanks

    Dear loeezy,
Sorry you felt offended by my post. That was not my intent and I never suggested you were stupid.
Your post was a bit confusing because you were describing unrelated things.
I was simply trying to explain a few things to help you out. Seems it did not work.
    My apologies.
Please check out exactly the directions I wrote about "import settings".  I believe you will find the active button, "import settings" next to "ask to import CD" which is next to the words "when you import a CD:" under the heading, "General" in the pull-down menu, Preferences.
Yes, I understand what the Import Settings are and how to change them.
However, Import Settings has nothing to do with burning a CD or selecting file types for adding to a playlist.
Since it is not needed for making a playlist or burning a CD, I don't understand why it would "annoying".
If you are burning a data or MP3 CD and only want specific file types, then you need to know what format of the files you add to a playlist are but that still has no relevance to what your current Import Settings are.
And no, iTunes will NOT "convert the file as needed" if you want one song in both formats.
If you are burning an audio CD, the result is one format. Audio CD.
That is why I wrote, "If you are burning an audio CD the format is irrelevant", because iTunes will convert AIFF, WAV, MP3, AAC & Apple Lossless to audio CD format.
Next time read the question thoroughly, make sure you do have the right version, and test what the the person is saying
I did read thoroughly and understand exactly what you wrote.
In the end, seems all you really needed was how to view the Kind column.
Seems you have sorted out your issue so good luck.
