Why did my Apple TV die after only 14 months?

I have an Apple TV MD199LL/A I purchased 11/20/12. It died sometime this month.  I have run all the diagnostics, swapped out cords, hooked up to my Mac to try and restore--nothing works.  I know it is the unit because I moved my other identical device to this room using all the hookups from the other device and it works fine.  When I say dead, I mean no indicator lights, nothing--also iTunes does not even acknowledge the device when hooked up to the computer.  Is the lifespan on this device only 14 months?

Bad luck I'd say - assume you've tried a different power cord in case a fuse has blown?
The original AppleTVs, of which I still have several, got very hot and I think that contributed to many of them failing within a few years.
The new black models have much lower power consumption, only just get warm and in theory should last much longer than devicesusing hard drives.
That said a small percentage of any product will fail in or just out of warranty - most don't, so probably as I say just the luck of the draw.

  • Why did the Apple 'genius' tell my my bulging battery was normal?

Why did the Apple 'genius' tell my my bulging battery was normal

The battery has a cycle count of 101 and is listed in good condition and @ 2 years old.  The 'genius' said it was 'normal' and NOT defective.  And was probably because I left it plugged in most of the time.
I remined him how the lithium ion battery and its associated charging system are supposed to be very sophisticated and are reported to not overcharge the battery and to extend its life. I also cited where I had read that the swelling usually occurrs when a battery does not ventilate properly,
I asked him why the five other Apple laptops I owned for years never had that 'normal' condition.
I pretty much got the dumb deer-in-the headlights stare.

  • IPod not charging after only 6 months

After only 6 months, my iPod (color display) seems to have stopped taking charges. When plugged into computer, a very faint image appears saying something like "Battery power very low." We brought to an iPod store. They said the battery is fine, and sold us a cord for plugging into wall outlet. We left it charging overnight, but it still doesn't work (it does work while plugged into wall).
Could the battery really be dead after only 6 months?
Does it really cost $80 to have a battery replaced?
Is there really no way to get support from Apple directly to answer questions like these?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Please note that
Normally, the battery should needs to be replacement around 18 months, yours is 6 months -Hummm.
Where did you buy it? Are you sure it is a brand new one? iPod with colour display have came to market for quite some time.
Try to do a reset and recharge your iPod again.
If still does not work, you can go to Apple shop again, your iPod should covered by 12 months warranty

  • My battery has a current max capacity of 97% after only 2 month ...

    Hi everyone.
I don't know if I'm a little bit paranoid but I just checked the current max capacity of my battery (Macbook Pro 2012 13") with different softwares as Battery Health or Battery Guard (available on the App Store) and it reads 97% after only 2 month and 3 cycles ... Is it normal?
I'm kinda worried, the loss of capacity seems so fast, to me ...
More details : this capacity was 100.6% just before I tried to calibrate it. I followed the advices of Battery Health :
    1) Charge the battery until 100%, then wait 2 hours with the Macbook plugged
    2) Use it, until it shuts down by itself, then let the Macbook 5 hours at least without charging it again
    3) Charge the Macbook until 100% again
After this manipulation, my max capacity lost 3 percent ... Is this something I did? Is it normal?
Does the Macbook have to calibrate his battery again? Then, what's the manipulation to do to calibrate it (I looked for it on the Apple website, but I can't find a step-by-step)?
    Thank you all

Battery capacity degrades over the life of the battery for a lot of reasons and will fluctuate from day-to-day by a percent or two.  Instead of using apps to read the battery, you can get all the info you need right from the system itself.  Click the apple in the upper left corner, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power and then just read the battery Capacity, charge Cycles, Condition, and Voltage.  As long as the Condition is Normal you are fine.
Although Apple says to calibrate the battery by discharging to shutoff and then recharge, that in reality is not good for Lithium-technology, and it does not calibrate the battery, it calibrates the charge reporting circuitry.
If you go to the Battery University site, an independent group that has done a lot of studies of batteries, you can find information on prolonging Lithium-technology battery life.  One thing that is clear is that deep discharge cycles are very degrading on battery life.  Optimum balance of use/life seems to be around a discharge to 50% and then recharge.  Also, temperature is a major player in shortening battery life.
At thiis point, don't get too hung up on the battery capacity, use the MBP and enjoy it.

  • Why did my mouse stop scrolling after upgrading to mavericks?

I have completely lost all ability to scroll with my Apple Magic Mouse after upgrading to Mavericks.   Why did this happen?   How can it be fixed?    It worked fine with Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion.

    Everyone:
I was able to solve my own problem, after scouring the Internet looking for solutions.  Sadly, the Apple Support Community was of no help.
    Here's the full story:
I originally had purchased my iMac with Snow Leopard installed.   I loved it just the way it was, and really did not ever want to upgrade.  However, I've been around computers long enough to know that I would HAVE to do it someday, only because of the age old problem of wanting to run some new application in the future, but not being able to, becasue the app would only run on the latest version of OS X.  I reluctantly upgraded to Mountain Lion less than a year ago, without too many problems -- nothing I wasn't able to fix fairly easily anyway.  When Mavericks came out, with the "offer I could not refuse" price of FREE, I knew I would eventually have to install it.
So the day comes when I'm finally ready to install Mavericks.  To get ready for that day, I did the following:
I ran CCleaner on Mountain Lion to clear out any old files accumulated.  (No longer works in Mavericks)
Made sure my Time Machine backup was up to date
Cleared out gigbytes of old files off my hard drive, and archived them on an external USB drive
Made sure every single app on my iMac was fully upgraded.
Made sure Mountain Lion itself was fully upgraded!
I then set aside a full day for the upgrade, knowing full well how long it could take, even with a very fast internet connection.  Eventually I worked up the courage to go to the App Store, and proceded to download Mavericks.
The update seemed to go smoothly enough, no problems that I noticed.  So I finally get to the point where I can sign on to my iMac again, opened up the Chrome browser, and found out that my mouse was was unable to scroll.  I then opened up Firefox and Safari, and found that I could not scroll pages on those browsers either. As a matter of fact, I couldn't scroll using my mouse no matter what app I tried.  That feature was completely lost.
I went to ' System Preferences --> Mouse ' to look at the settings, and only the most basic settings were available: click and speed, nothing at all for scrolling or swiping.   That's not good....
Looking to see if anything else was missing in System Preferences, I saw that there was no option for Blue Tooth at all.  As a matter of fact, Blue Tooth was completely inoperative, and there was literally nothing I could do to make it work.  The Mavericks upgrade had completely trashed Blue Tooth on my iMac.  I have no idea how my wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse were even operational, Apple must have some sort of "back door" that keeps those two connected even when the entire Blue Tooth subsystem is off-line.
Since there was absolutely no way to fix this, given the damage done by the Mavericks upgrade, my only choice was to do a complete re-install of Mavericks.  I did this by turning off my iMac, and then after turning it back on, I held down the command + R keys to initiate the "recovery" of my iMac, and re-installed Mavericks. There are screens the are displayed that walk you through the process, which is fairly easy and strait-forward.
This above process is a feature called OS X Recovery, and it has been present since Lion.  Here's a link to an article that explains it more fully:
OS X: About OS X Recovery
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718
I did not know about this feature, but found out about it after doing various web searches in an effort to find a solution to my problem.
So, I basically ended up installing Mavericks a second time.  This took hours to accomplish, but it worked.   After the second installation, I signed on, and sure enough, Blue Tooth was back in operation, and my Magic Mouse worked without any problems what so ever.  I had full scrolling ability in all my apps.
So OS X Recovery saved the day, at least for me.
I should note that before doing the Mavericks upgrade on my iMac, I had already performed the upgrade on a family member's MacBook, without any problems encountered at all.   They were still running Snow Leopard, the orignal OS that came with their MacBook!  Like me they were reluctant to upgrade, but eventually it becomes a necessary evil.
Here's hoping that this information may be of use to someone in the future.

  • Do Apple products die after a given time?

My iMac is three and a half years old and keeps freezing! Will not boot consistently, after waking from sleep the Apps running are non functional. Engineers don't know why?? Also, my Time Capsule died after two years and I had to buy another. Could have had 4/5 PC's for the money!!
These problems have caused me much loss of time/money not to mention the inconvenience and potential loss of data.
I have recommended iMac and other Apple products to large numbers of people, whom I hope don't have the same problems as me. My confidence in Apple has taken a huge dent. It seems that the only way the engineers can fix the machine to keep changing components!! In the meantime, I can't get on with my endeavours to make a living.

    Engineers don't know why??
You've had this in for a proper diagnosis? Who are the "engineers?"
You may have several concurrent issues. But we need more specifics to be able to help.
In the meantime, Applejack may help. At the prompt, type in "applejack AUTO" and let it run through its agenda.

The first boot after will be slower than usual and it may take several restarts for you to see the benefits, if any.
You should also run the Hardware Test in extended.

  • Why did the Apple Store replace the iPad mini when the firmware was corrupt -- why not just fix the firmware?

The iPad mini would not turn on - so I scheduled an appointment with the Genius Bar. Why did they say the only solution was a replacement iPad mini- couldn't the firmware be corrected (re-installed or something?)
    Problem Description/Diagnosis
    Issue: iPad display is black
Steps to Reproduce: Plugged into the computer to do a restore and there was an error message saying the firmware is corrupt
Cosmetic Condition: iPad appears to be in good condition
    Contact Apple Support Case: 697280685
    Employee 929551133

The iPad mini was not still under warranty -- so they charged me $199 -- and I did not ask because the way they said it, there was not an option. When I got home and checked, it appears that there should have been an option to re-install the firmware.

  • Why did my Apple ID suddenly revert back to an older username?

After using the same Apple ID (and email address), call it "[email protected]" for several years. I switched my Apple ID when I switched email carriers to "[email protected]", and also switched my Apple ID to the same name, which I used successfully for several months.  A few days ago I tried to update my account details and saw my Apple ID had changed back to "[email protected]".  In addition, I could no longer access a couple of games I purchased 5 years ago and had been successfully using.   Any ideas why this should happen?

I just had the same issues although with no resolution.  I rebooted my phone and it prompted me to log in with a completely different apple Id identified as this : x*****@1*****.com
I bought the iPhone 6 Plus from Target brand new while signing up for verizon Edge.  Unless Target is selling refurbished or second hand iPhones then what the **** happened?  I cant get into my own phone!
I have talked to multiple apple reps and after quite a while I got someone who asked for my proof of purchase with IMEI, i sent it to him and he was surprised. He thought i was making it up.  He says he has to put through a force unlock before I can use the phone again.
With your issue it seems the email was yours even though it shouldnt have been your Apple ID.  With mine the new Apple ID that comes up on my phone isnt mine at at all!!!!!!!!

  • Why did the Apple TV update remove "home movies" from the computer option in Apple tv?

AApple TV auto updated.  22 sept 2014.  Most of the movies I have on my iMac were under itunes as "home movies".  The Apple TV update removed the ability to see home movies in the "computer" option in Apple tv.   I can see them on my iMac, but no longer have access thru my Apple tv.  I can still see the few that are physically in "movies" in iTunes, but the Apple TV will now only show them.  Thanks

    Hello bernsteinr,
It sounds like an issue with Home Sharing. Check out the article below for more information on getting Home Sharing working again so you can see all the movies that you have on your iMac show up on your Apple TV.

  • Y500 motherboard dead after only 18 months

My $1000 laptop is dead after just 18 months. The motherboard is unrepairable and my hard drive has stopped working. It has been having issues starting for at least six months but now it is dead for good. I'm pissed because Lenovo won't work wih me to repair it. They want almost $600 for a new motherboard and hard drive. That's without them actually touching the laptop. For that price I can just buy a new laptop. You can be sure it won't be a Lenovo. Apparently, they are ok with people paying a premium for their products that last less than half te lifespan of their competitors. I am so angry right now.
