Why did my iPod die?

My iPod had the red "x" on the display window when I plugged it in to my computer one day. It was working fine five minutes earlier. When I plugged it in my computer said that the iPod was corrupt. I called Support and they said that there was a hardware failure and they needed to send me a new one.
Why did this happen? How can I prevent this? The only thing I can think of is my roommate uses my charger and computer to charge his iPod. Could that have anything to do with it?

I don't see how that would be the cause.
Sometimes, things just break or are defective from the factory. That's why Apple has a one-year warranty.
If the iPod is a classic (an iPod with a hard drive inside), don't handle or carry it in a way that causes excessive +bumping around+ of the iPod.

  • Why did my ipod die AND I can't download new itunes?!?!

I got my ipod mini 2 years ago but just started using it (I know I am late).
I was using itunes version 5 (ignoring the update messages when I plugged it in) and then one day the music died...
Literally my ipod got a folder with a "!" icon and stopped working. Stopped charging I think too.
I tried all the things on the support pages and nothing helps.
Now all I see is a apple icon... It won't recognize the ipod om itunes.
and NOW I can't install itunes 7. I get a message saying: "Service ‘ipodService’ (ipodService) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient priviledges to stop system"
Can one of you help me PLEASE! I have been traveling and no ipod = no fun
    Thanks!!!

BUT it won't restore... any tips?
could you describe what happens when you try to restore?

  • Why did my iPod touch go into recovery mode when updating to iOS 8.1 over the air???

I was updating my iPod touch (5th Generation) to iOS 8.1 over the air update option and my iPod goes into recovery mode...I hadn't backed it up in like 2 weeks and a lot happened in two weeks with photos and everything. I have yet to see if I get any of them back but why did this happen? I thought apples over the air update was reasonably easy and secure...?

Hey Haywards, There has been reported issues with updating iPods to iOS 8, one of which is updating with the cloud or through Wi-Fi. Your seeing one of the problems. After you get things cleared up with the DFU recovery, connect your iPod with your computer via the cable and run the update through iTunes. You should be OK. Or if still an option, don't do the update at all! Many have reported several issues with iOS 8 on iPods. Slow or laggy operation, missing apps, missing music, camera roll not working or missing and huge battery drain and charging issues, just to mention a few. You may want to hold off from updating if possible. Things to think about. Good luck, Cheers.

  • Why Did My iPod Erase Everything?!?!

I have been working on putting new things on my new iPod. iTunes froze up a while ago, but my iPod said "ejecting," so I disconnected it. However, there is now nothing on my iPod. I did NOT hit "Restore Settings" in iTunes, so that shouldn't be the case. Why did this happen???? I have to reload so much that I am really ticked off.

I wish I had an answer for you but on Friday, I had something similar happen after 2 weeks of using my iPod. I plugged it in and it said the iPod could not be recognized.
When I looked at the iPod itself it showed no music, no videos, nada. But both the About box on the iPod itself and the iPod panel in iTunes showed 83 GBytes of other stuff on the iPod.
Given that I have only synced albums, videos, and podcasts to that iPod and given that the amount of space I have now after restoring is exactly what I had before I don't have a clue what happened.

  • Why did my phone die?

SO my android died and i pressed the volume and start button and it turned on but why did it die anyway??

        Hi there Sofiya19!
I know it can be confusing when an electronic does something like this.  This is called hibernation mode and sometimes occurs when the phone hasn't been rebooted in quite some time or is needed after a new application is installed.
It's very similar to a home computer that reboots itself randomly.  It doesn't happened too often, but is needed for the cpu to reset.
Please don't be alarmed as this is normal and I'm glad you were able to get yours back up and running.  Now, if it happens extraordinarily often, that's a different concern, so keep us updated!

  • TS1382 why did my ipod screen lose contrast and become barely readable?

My ipod classic has been kept connected to power and to my stereo.  Yesterday morning I found the screen to be washed out, so bright you can barely read it.  Changing the brightness setting helps but doesn't return it to the original state.  I do not find a contrast setting.  Is there a way to correct this and does anyone know why this may have  happened?

Thanks.  The backlight is still working and the screen is just barely readable (it seems as if I could adjust the contrast I would be OK).  I did a hard reset and have been putting off a retore because I have not backed up all my playlists and I am afraid of tinkering too much and lose what I have.  The ipod is maybe three years old.  The software is up to date.  If it were a hardware problem wouldn't the whitening be gradual?  This happened, literally, overnight.  Could the power source for the charger be the culprit?  I live on a boat and the power is 110 inverted from a 50 hz generator.  Guests (I have a charter boat) with ipads have noticed odd behavior when they plug in with the ipad charger.  They seem to be able to charge their ipads with my ipod charger with no problem.  Could be no connection (also, my husband's cell phone whited out a couple of days ago..may all be a coincidence as that phone has a few years on it, as well)...just thought I'd throw that info in the pot in case you know of any connections between charging and hardware malfunctions.  Thanks again.

When I did it yesterday my Ipod after I put new music on it. My Ipod went not bright out. I didn't see it was okay to disconnected. Usually I did it will be light up. My Ipod was so dark I couldn't see the okay to disconnected. Can someone help why it's acting like that?

  • Why Did My iPod Touch 4th Gen Stop Sync Entourage?

I just noticed that my items from Entourage 2008 are no longer syncing - Contacts, Calendar, but I don't know when that problem began or why. I've had no problems syncing my iPod Touch 4th Gen since I bought it many months ago.
Other programs such as Apple Mail are syncing my Notes just fine. I've upgraded the iPod software each time a new version came out, I'm syncing from a MacBook Pro. It doesn't appear that any items other than ones coming from Entourage 2008 are affected.
Perhaps something in one of the Apple iPod upgrades caused this, or a setting was changed accidentally - which I doubt, but anything is possible.
I'd appreciate any assistance since my contacts and calendar are of utmost importance to me and must be correct and up to date.
    Thanks, Greg

This sounds like the same problem I am having. The error I got was Ox E80000 24  that first O could have been a zero, not sure.
Edited to add I have iPod touch, iOS 6.1.6

  • Why did my  ipod stop charging?

    To whom it may concern:
I want for someone to tell me why my ipod won't charge. It was working on Friday when I last used it and yesterday when I tried to plug it from my computer to charge it didn't charge. I have tried all cables from all the ipods in my home and none of them seem to work on my ipod. So, I am assuming it is not the cable. What can I do?

    Not Charge
    - See:

    - Try another cable. The cable for 5G iPod (lightning connector) seems to be more prone to failure than the older cable.

    Hey lizabler!
I personally haven't experiened this specific thing myself, by I have certainly read issues like your quite a few times on the Discussions.
When your iPod resets itself in this kind of case, this happens usually because, while you're playing a video on your iPod, it's not being able to continuouly load and play that video fast enough to actually play the video at a normal speed.
This can be caused by the iPod's battery.
How charged/discharged was your iPod around the time when your iPod reset itself? Try letting your iPod's battery fully die, then let it recharge for a full 3 hours, and see if this ever happens again.
Also, if this ever happens again, have you tried resetting your iPod several times? (holding the "Menu" and middle buttons together for 10 seconds)
Sometimes your iPod resetting itself can also be caused by your iPod's memory being highly used. For example, if you have a 60 GB iPod, and you've used up 54 GB of it already, this can sometimes somehow bog up the iPod, causing it to act strangely.
If this iPod-resetting-itself behavior recurrs, and resetting the iPod several times doesn't help, try restoring your iPod to factory settings -> How to restore your iPod
I hope that info helps you.
