Why did my macbook say it has to shut down?
I left my macbook plugged in, downloading the latest CBC podcasts and when I return, there was an error message on the screen saying that the machine needed to shut down. Fine. I shut it down, but when I hit the power button to start up again, I heard ticking and got a grey screen with a question mark in a file. Nothing else. Has anyone had this? What's the fix?
That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

Macbook Pro- shortly after upgrading to free software upgrade to Mavericks- 10.9.5-
has suddenly been freezing up, but went more directly to 'shutting down,' CRASHING on its own. Most of the time, if I'm even able to successfully get the laptop turned back on, it only stays up/on for a few moments before repeating the failure. The failure is often accompanied with the monitor going 'blank,' or most typically either 'blacking out,' or going blue/green or grey screen with lines or grids all over the monitor. All Desktop visibility, functions or applications in process disappears. This has caused repetetive 'forced shut downs,' which I never usually do, unless prompted to because I have no choice like this.... Or as I said, the computer itself will just shut down and turn off by itself.... Can anyone tell me what this issue is, and I'm pretty sure other Mac users have seen this exact thing I'm describing happening on their laptops, with their systems or on their monitors. Someone please explain or point me in the right direction... as naturally my laptop just went out of warranty as well.... And I don't know if this means the entire system is basically corrupted, dying/dead... and or if it is a monitor issue, a hardware issue, software issue or if there is anything that can be done to restore, repair it, etc.? Also another thing I have noticed ever since getting this laptop- (few years old now...) is that it runs VERY HOT... has in fact burned my lap /skin many times... and seems like the fan or internal operating systems/functions are also perhaps not functioning properly. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

Why Does My MacBook Pro Keep forcing a shut down?
Whenever I shut down my macbook pro MANUALLY it waits a little and then brings up the "you must restart your computer" screen (the one in diff languages). How do I stop this? Is this hurting my computer?
I have 2 external hardrrives (one FW), an Mbox, and mobile mouse connected at all times.Backing up should not be a problem. Has your computer had a knock recently? I'm just wondering if a RAM module may be slightly unseated. You can google YouTube videos on resetting it, you also may need to to search these forums to reset PRAM and SMC.

Itunes won't start-says it has to shut down
i started having problems with itunes and downlaoded the new itunes. won't start. in the error report it sayd its a compatability issue. when i send the report to ms though, they claim it to be an itunes problem. i could use a lot of help.
+when i tried to start quicktime it produced the same message as itunes with a little change to it. in the last part of the code it was 1482appcomp.txt.+
That problem will be causing the iTunes problem.
So let's try swapping out your existing QuickTime for a fresh copy.
Head into your Add/Remove programs. Uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
3. Open Program Files.
4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx. (If “Hide filename extensions for known file types” is enabled on the PC, then those two files will appear as “QuickTime” and QuickTimeVR”.)
7. Restart your computer.
Next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
Switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
Go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
If the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. Does it launch properly now?

I updated my Ipod touch 4th gen (IO6 or whatever its called) And it has the picture that says to connect my ipod to Itunes, and I did, now it says "ITunes has detected an Ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this Ipod before it can be used with ITunes." I just updated it and now I have to restore it??! I don't wanna lose all my things on my ipod just for a stupid update! Please someone help!
Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything... and you must continue with the Recovery...

My macbook pro will not shut down. It tells me that safari has cancelled shut down and to quit safari and try again, but every time I try to quit safari it won't let me. I need help...I don't know what to do.
Have you tried holding the power button down for several seconds? I would try the force quit as mentioned earlier first, or go to the Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities and try force quit there.

My MacBook Pro (retina 15 inch) OS X Yosemite, which had been very stable since purchased in late 2013 has been shutting down unexpectedly in recent weeks. Sometimes it's caused by Excel or Quicken, other times, it's a mystery. And the whole computer crashes, not just a program. What could be causing this recent behavior?

Since downloading OS X Mavericks, my computer has been shutting down midway of starting up. Please help! The problem began after downloading the software free update. Now when I start my computer, it will starts up normal but when the desktop appears, there will be an error message that I shut down my computer because of an error and if I would like to open the applications that were open before the sudden shut down I should press continue. Then when I select continue, it will open up another communication window that my computer is restarting because of an error. Then the screen will revert to shutting down and restarting again. This has been going on now all morning. Can someone hlep me on how to resolve this issue?
Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Do they launch OK while in Safe Mode? -
I use an old laptop which still uses windows xp,i have a new laptop coming today which uses windows 8,my problem is that when i load up i-tunes,after about 30 seconds of using it,an error warning appears,those ones that asks if you want to send an error report.It is telling me that i-tunes has to shut down which it then does when you either send a report or just cancel,is this because of windows xp no longer getting support or whatever?

My Iphone has been shutting down by itself and its not keeping a charge either i use to keep battery life until at least the end of the day, thatas even when I close out my apps. Even Siri start talking on its own. Whats the reason for all this?
The iPhone can shut down by itself when the battery is too low. Don't know if you have a malfunction that is running continuously and as such draining the battery ...or if you just have a warn out battery.

IMac Retina has started shutting down several times a day, generating a "Panic Report".
Although I have had a new iMac Retina since October, it is only within the past few weeks that I have started trying to use it for most purposes. Initially, it seemed to be working OK. But during the past week, it has started to do peculiar things, such as:
1. Now, several times a day, it shuts down unexpectedly. When I boot it back up, it displays a message saying that it was shut down because of a problem. Then, when I click on the window for a report of the problem, it generates a long “Panic Report”.
2. When it boots back up, it automatically opens several windows that I did not have open when it shut down — Safari, Firefox, Excel, Word, etc.
3. I have 2 external 1gb drives connected for data, and 2 external 4gb drives connected for Time Machine backups. All of the drives have been formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). However, although Finder originally showed all 4 of those drives, Finder now always omits a particular one of the 1gb drives. Yet, iDrive and Time Machine continue to recognize all 4 drives.
4. Several times over the past week, it suddenly popped up a “Jabber" window containing a long transcript of a series of iPhone texts that I exchanged in January. However, I never installed Jabber (to my knowledge), and it doesn’t show as currently installed on any of my devices.

My iMac has been shutting down abruptly
My new iMac has been shutting down abruptly the past week and after that I have to wait several minutes to try and see if it will turn on. At first I thought it was overheating, but even after being on less than an hour it shuts down. Does anyone know the reason why this is happenig? Oh, and I was just browsing on the internet, there were no weird programs runnig and the anti virus scan says it's clean.
Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

X4540 Windows RAID5 Performance
We have good performance from our X4500/X4540 hardware when running ZFS on Solaris but now have a requirement to use a couple of them for Windows directly. We have tested an X4540 with Windows 2008 x64 and various RAID5 volumes both using the storage
