Why did my time capsule stopped backing up?

Why would my time capsule stop backing up, it is set to delet when the drive is full?

Many people report that TM no longer deletes old backups as it should.
That does happen sometimes, but for many different reasons.
TM should never run out of space
Yes, it can.  First, remember that it deletes entire backups, not the backups of individual files.  Second, it won't ever delete the last remaining backup.
So if it needs to do a very large backup, there needs to be room for the last remaining backup, plus the new one, plus some workspace.  That's why we recommend that the TM drive be 3-4 times the size of the data it's backing-up.  If it's much less than that, and there's a need for a large or full backup, there may not be enough room.
as i understand how it works, it should simply give a warning that the old backups need to be deleted.
That's how it worked on Leopard, if you had the "Warn when old backups are deleted" option checked -- the backup would fail if there wasn't room.  All you had to do then was remove the check, but many folks didn't understand that.
So, effective with Snow Leopard, the option is now "Notify after old backups are deleted," and that's what happens -- old backups are deleted automatically when necessary, and a notice is sent only after the new backup completes.
It seems that after an upgrade install of the OS.. TM ceases to have the ability to delete old backups.. it simply runs out of space and refuses to backup.
Normally not.  Some have turned out to be users who actually did a "clean install," erasing their internal HD.  If you do that, and don't use either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to put your data back (and transfer Computer Settings), the erased drive is treated as a different one.  In that case, TM will do a full backup, so requires a lot space.
However, effective with Mountain Lion, TM does add more space for "padding" than before, sometimes quite a bit more, so a drive that was barely large enough on Lion or earlier may be too small now.
EDIT:  A good way to figure out what's going on is to look at the log messages, either by using Console and filtering for backupd, or via the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting

  • Time capsule stopped backing up

My TC had been successfully backing up both a mb pro and imac. Now it won't back up the mb pro, but imac still backs up. Error message "backup of (computer name which is correct) was not repairable by this computer. It is being mad available with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible." I don't know exactly what this means but doesn't look good!
I've tried simply restarting (unplug and replug) the TC. No luck.
    Any ideas out there?
    Thanx.

I had the exact problem (using Time Capsule to back up two computer on my home network). I did update the firmware on the Time Capsule at some point so I don't know if that contributed to the problem. I erased both files on the Time Capsule hard drive and restarted using only one computer - we'll see if it makes a difference. Painful and potentially dangerous to loss of backup data.

  • Time Capsule stops backing up even after reset

My Time Capsule has stopped backing up saying it can't create the backup folder.
    So far, I have:
    1) reset the Time Capsule
    2) reset the network and even renamed it
    3) deleted the file in the library marking the last backup
I see that there are backups on there, but I can't make any new ones and it seems to have just started in the last week and there was no change to the Time Capsule in that time.

What OS is your computer running?
Your profile is out of date I am guessing. ie you are not running 10.6.2 ??
Apple did give a few details of problems in Mavericks.. there are many more.
OS X Mavericks: Time Machine problems
Reset the TC to factory again.
Redo the setup with all short names no spaces pure alphanumeric.
    Set IPv6 to link-local only
Manually mount the TC disk in computer.
Then reset TM and try the backup again.
You will see all of those in posts I have done about Mavericks issues with TC and TM.
eg Time Machine Can't Find Backup Disk
If none of those fix it.. tell us exactly the network layout.. not just the TC model and age, main modem model and type. TC setup.
    Also computer OS and setup.
You can setup the TC in full network isolation.. plug it into the computer by ethernet and try again.
    How much space is available?
Have you studied the details of setup and troubleshooting from Pondini??

  • My time capsule stopped backing up.

My time capsule suddenly stopped backing up.  I updated utilities and it is still not backing up.  Any ideas?

    What is the error message?

It don't workie!! is rather hard to troubleshoot from.
Try rebooting the networking.. restart in correct order.. modem.. router/TC.. clients. 2min gap.
That now fixes 90% of issues with Mountain Lion and TC connectivity.

  • Time capsule stopped backing up after installing Mavericks.

Ever since installing OSX Mavericks time machine will not back up and now Time Capsule says that there's not enough space. What can I do?

Archive off the old backups.. if you still want them.
    Erase the TC..
    Start a new backup.
You can also plug a USB drive into the TC and use that as target for new backup.

  • Time capsule stops backing up

i have a macbook pro 2010 15 inch and a fourth gen time capsule.
was able to do a complete backup in snow leaopard.  have not been able to do a backup in lion.  is there a way to just start over?
    please help.
    thanks!

Have you found a solution? I'm having a similar problem, in the initial back up it gets to 27 or so GB and then it says back up failure but no other information on how to fix it. I'm hoping that you have found a solution that can help me. Anything, suggestion, etc would be greatly appreciated.

  • Time capsule stopped backing up and is saying it is busy

Time capsule issaying it is busy and wont back up?

    Is the hard disk spinning??
Put your hand on it and you can feel the vibration..
If the disk is not spinning reboot it..
If the disk is spinning disconnect all the other computers and devices on the network so nothing else can access it.. wait for the disk to spin down then reboot it.

You cannot post emails in the text.. you can have it open in your profile.
Ring Apple if you have loads of stuff and have current apple care and they will try and sort you.
Yes.. big changes were made at Mavericks.
You need to factory reset the TC and start again.. Perhaps even wipe it and start over.
I recommend all very short names.. do not follow the apple recommended names in the wizard.
Use 2-20 characters, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Passwords the same but 8-20 characters. mixed case and numbers.
If you still cannot reach the TC tell us how you are connecting.. wireless or ethernet and how the TC is connected to the network and which model it is.

  • TM and Time capsule:  stopped backing up 12 hours ago

I've got a TC alternating hourly backups with a D-Link NAS, and up to late last night, they've been working perfectly in tandem.
However, this afternoon I noticed that when TM tries to back up to TC, I get an error:  The backup disk image "/Volumes/My TC-1/ Admin's Mac mini.sparsebundle" is already in use.
This TC backs up two other local Macs and they are being backed up fine.
I should add that late last night I was experimenting with a couple of TM logging apps (TimeTracker, BackupLoupe, and the Time Machine Buddy widget).  I deleted those post-haste, rebooted, but still have the same problem.
I've opened my TM device in the Finder and can see the path to my last backup session:  /Volumes/Time Machine Backups 1/Backups.backupdb/Admin’s Mac mini/2013-02-17-145625, as well as a number of earlier backups within the sparse bundle, so I assume I can somehow pick up where they left off.
    Two questions:
    1.  What should I do to get TM for this volume back on the rails and working again?
    2.  How would I do a full restore from an earlier backup to my boot volume?
    Thanks!

@Linc Davis:  Thanks for the heds up.  I'll keep that in mind.
However, my D-Link is working perfectly.  It's the Time Capsule that wasn't being recognized.
I'll have to close this thread, though, as I've got it back to working by turning off sharing, rebooting the TC, renaming the target disk, and finally re-enabiling sharing (nothing seemed to work until sharing was re-enabled.  {shrug} ).  My TC is now recognized in the list of available volumes, and is now backing up.  I was about to update my question above when your response appeared.
Thanks for checking in and for your advice.

  • Update time capsule stopped backing up

I updated my Tiem Capsiule a few days ago with a new release, and it has stopped backing up.
Anyone had this problem or have a solution.
    Mant thanks./

If you are on SL.. go back to 7.5.2.. 7.6 firmware is buggy as anything. And there is nothing of any use to SL in there.

  • Time Capsule stopped backing up when I upgraded to Mountain Lion

Time Machine, with auto backup to Time Capsule was working fine until I upgraded to Mountain Lion. I'm currently on 10.8.2.
My Time Capsule is called "Center Of The Universe." When the computer tried to backup, I get a message saying Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Center Of The Universe." The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Erich Bergen's MacBook Pro 15" (2). sparsebundle" is already in use.
Any ideas for what is causing this?

    Here is what it lists

It never finishes the last 353 KB - it sits there for hours saying finishing backup.

  • Why did my phone non stop backing up?

Please help me....initially i wanted to sync the songs which i had added into my itunes library to my iphone. But after clicking Sync, it shows "step 2 of 4: Backing up...." and it has been N hours ago since i had pressed the botton Sync. What is wrong with my iphone? Does this means too many data to be backed up in my iphone? I do not think so as i do not have much apps in my phone and pictures or videos as well.
I'm a new iphone users and still adapting to this phone. Please someone help me. Why it just couldn't Sync the songs into the phone just a click away?

  • Backup to Time Capsule stopped due to network problem

I have been backing up for a month or so. Now my time capsule stopped backing up. I get the following error message:
There was a problem connecting to the server "Time-Capsule.local".
The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connections, and then try again.
    Here is my setup.
Internet comes in via an airport extreme. I extended the wireless network of the airport extreme to the Time Capsule. I try to backup my MacBook Pro (Lion 10.7) wirelessly to the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule is visible in the Airport Utility, has an IP address and I can access it without a problem. When I go to the settings for time machine I can see the Time Capsule and even select it. But then I get the above error message.
I tried checking the network but to me everyhting looks fine. Not sure how to start trouble shooting this. Who can help?

    It's eventually just a hang.
Switch off the wireless on all computers.
Power off the Extreme and the TC
    Wait a minute or two
Power on the Extreme and wait until the light is steady green
Power on the TC and wait untill the light is steady green
Reconnect the computers one after one

  • If I move my iPhoto library to iDrive will Time Capsule still back it up?

My disk space is getting tight and I'm considering moving my iPhoto library to an external drive.  I've been happily using Time Capsule for years for backup.  If I move iPhoto library to my external drive (not the one in Time Capsule) will Time Capsule stop backing it up?
    OS X 10.10.1
    TC Version 7.6.4

Thanks, Linc, you are the greatest!
So I moved my iTunes library to my external disk.  When I checked Time Machine's Excluded list it was not there.  Then I entered TM and saw that the library had been backed up from the external disk.  So all is well and apparently the OS guys stopped adding external drives to the Excluded list.

  • Time Machine stopped backing up to Time Capsule

Three weeks ago, my Time Machine stopped backing up to My Time Capsule. I get a Time Machine Error that says the backup disk is not available. When I go into Time Machine on my Systems Preferences and click Select Disk, I get None. If I then go to Set Up Time Capsule, Airport Utility finds my Time Capsule.
I click through where it asks whether I want to change some settings for this Time Capsule. I click all the way through, changing nothing. And of course, I haven't resolved the problem. I don't want to go back to factory settings because I have archived a lot of old home movies on the Time Capsule and am afraid I'll lose them.
The only changes I've made recently that may affect this have to do with a mobileme account. I've been using one mobileme account for work for several years. Three weeks before I started having problems with the Time Capsule, I started a MobileMe account for the family. Now, when I sync all of our machines, the system looks for a new local host, which I have created. About the time I started syncing my computers is about the time the Time Machine stopped backing up.
Can switching between the two local hosts be the source of my problem?
