Why did our standard format Quicktime movie switch to widescreen preview in iDVD?

We created wedding videos on Final Cut Express 2 and converted them to Quicktime movies. When you play the videos in Quicktime, they show up in standard format (not widescreen). When we put the movies into iDVD 7.1.2, one of the movies shows up as widescreen and the other stays in standard format. We want them in standard format (which is how they were shot).
Any suggestions?

Hi
When You make a brand new iDVD project - Select DV - not Widescreen-DV
In iDVD top menu Project/Project info - Here too - You may be must select 4x3 size.
And how You go from FinalCut to iDVD matters - My notes on this.
FCE/P to iDVD
Several things
• How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
• Free space on Start-up hard disk
• Encoding
• Brand and type of DVDs used
• Burn speed set
• iDVD BUG
• Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
• Disable Screen and Energy saver
• IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
• Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
• Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
• Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
• NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
Encoding
• I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used (matters)
• I use Verbatim
• I use DVD-R
Burn speed set
• I set down this to x4 (or x1)
iDVD BUG
• One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
Use of Chapters
• I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
• NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
• No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
Material used to build movie
• video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
• audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
• photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Also do when problems occures
• Trash iDVD pref. file and
• run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

• Why does a 1.5Gb QuickTime movie file take up 5.8Gb in iDVD?!

I've just converted an old VHS tape to DVD and then used Wondershare DVD Ripper to convert this to a QuickTime movie file (*.mov). This resulting QT file is 1.5Gig in size. When I then add this movie into iDVD, it immediately takes up over 5Gig of project space and thus is too big for a normal 4.7Gig DVD. How can this be? The movie fit on a 4.7Gig DVD to begin with with some room to spare to why does it see so much expansion within iDVD?
- CDM

CDM -- The Quicktime .mov format is a so-called container format -- and what's inside can be compressed or saved in different ways. So you could have a highly compressed Quicktime file that doesn't take up too much disc space. But, if you want that file on a DVD video disc (that plays on a regular DVD player), it must be in a format and structure that is standardized. MPEG-2 is the DVD standard format, and so it is entirely possible that your highly compressed video won't fit on a standard DVD video disc (in mpeg-2 format).
To bypass the resulting uncertainty with varying compression algorithms, Apple prefers to focus on the duration of videos, They use three methods in iDVD for compressing video into the mpeg-2 standard -- one method for video less than 60 minutes in length (Best Performance) and another for video under 120 minutes (Best Quality); the third method (Pro) takes longer, and tries to optimize the result for video of any length (but still under 120 minutes).
I'd suggest focusing on your video duration. Also, you are likely to obtain better video quality if you minimize the changes to video format -- VHS to DVD is both a conversion of analog to digital as well as a compression to mpeg-2 format. It sounds like you're then converting that into a Quicktime compressed format (mpg4?), and then iDVD is compressing it back into mpeg-2 for the final DVD. If you're editing the video, then you're typically stuck with all those conversions, but there are alteratives if you're not happy with the results (eg, MPEG Streamclip to cut up your DVD footage and Roxio Toast to copy those mpeg-2 files back to a playable DVD).

• Why can't I stream quicktime movie clips from mac book to apple tv

I have converted old analog camcorder video to .dv format and futher to .mov when opening and viewing in QuickTime. I recently purchased a new 1020 Apple TV device in hopes of viewing these movies in a wireless fashion on our Samsung Smart big screen TV. I am able to play these movies through a Lightning to HDMI adaptor, however, I am having no success in streaming these movies through AirPlay. The files appear to be too large to load and play. What to do? Thanks in advance, Jon

I suspect there isn't any need to convert from the QuickTime format. The Apple TV is quite capable of playing QuickTime movies, just not all of them. QuickTime movies (.mov) come in many shapes and sizes but have one thing in common, "the container", the container holds all the various types of video, audio and sometimes some other stuff.
Providing the contents of the container can be played by the Apple TV, the Apple TV will play the QuickTime movie. The audio profile, dimensions, data rate and video codec as posted by the OP are all compatible with the Apple TV.
.mov containers containing contents that can't be played by the Apple TV, can't be played by the Apple TV. The file in the page you linked to contains video that uses the 3ivx codec which is why it needs converting.
The OP's issue is either that the file is corrupt or that they have a problem on their network, hence why we need to ascertain whether the Apple TV will play content that we know should work.

• Why did Canon sell out for MOV files?

Man, I hate, hate, hate MOV files. With Canon being the #1 digital camera in the world, why on earth did they sell out and use MOV files for their HD video on their DSLR's.
Like really. AVI is the world standard, so easy to work with. MOV files to convert to AVI means you loose something in the process. I just wish Canon didn't sell out.

You misread my statements regarding what I'm implying...I think Canon made their own point when they stated that they intended the 5D as a professional stills camera with an interesting video feature.
To my point, and to Canon's point (again, as they have stated)...when they invented the 5D, they weren't shopping it around to the production houses as "the new digital cinema camera" to replace the standard ARRI or Panavision cameras.
I know all about the episode of "House" shot with the 5D. How could I not? Of course, nobody wants to ponder why they didn't shoot more than one episode with the 5D if it was the better choice in terms of price, workflow, technology or visual accuracy. Or, why is it that more shows have not followed suite? There have been a few, but everytime I ask people to give me examples, somehow I always get the same one ("that episode of 'House' from last year"). There are some good TV shows, and a few short scenes in major motion pictures, that were shot with the 5D. It's just that the only thing ever put out there as a showcase piece is that one episode of "House" and nothing more.
Really off the point, but as I said before, it wasn't Canon's "intention" to market the 5D or the 7D as a video camera when they built it. That was a happy accident.
Of course Canon targets professional video producers now, and I could neither imply or fully declare anything to the contrary without being easily rebutted. Again, just to clarify, we are talking again about the difference between the original intentions of the Canon engineers when the camera was built, versus the adapted marketplace strategy once a new use was discovered for the video function on the DSLRs.
I just used a chair as a stepstool to change a lightbulb, and I'm sure while the manufacturer appreciates that I've found additional uses for the hardware, they probably would still admit there are certain drawbacks, and that a fully-engineered stepladder has much to offer that a chair can't really provide in the original design spec. Likewise, while I can sit on my stepladder, it's not nearly as comfortable as the padded cushion on the chair.
That's the 5D...very capable, and sometimes the best tool for the job, but it wasn't built to be a video camera and so it has certain limitations that are all more than well known at this point. Video cameras, which have multiple tools for the standard video production environment, lack the same lens selection and image characteristics that have made the DSLRs such a popular option at a reasonable price point.
You can create a whole rig around a Canon 5D to get it to more or less OPERATE like a video camera, but there's a cost there anyway and some of the better rigs are downright expensive once you build out. Likewise, you can get a good lens adapter for most video cameras to gain some of that DOF and image that the DSLR offers, while maintaining all the "video" controls like built in ND filters, waveform/vectorscope, zoom rockers, auto focus, zebras, whatever...you get the idea.
BACK to the original post, you can probably bet that if Canon can work it out, they will find a way to streamline the video recording on the next generation of video-capable DSLRs and that may or may not include the Quicktime/MOV file garbage, but it's certainly a complaint they are aware of for now.

• Why can't I import quicktime .mov movies into iMovie 08?

I exported my iPhoto slideshow to a .mov quicktime movie and tried to import it into iMovie 08 and couldn't. It won't drag in, and it is greyed out if I try to go File>Import Movie. I thought iMovie 08 could support quicktime movies!
Thx

I tried converting my .mov file that I created in iPhoto into a MPEG-4 using MPEG Streamclip as suggested.
Thanks for posting. My original post was not to address conversion of an iPhoto slideshow in MPEG Streamclip, but rather its saving in an MP4 container in order to strip the "Tween" track that iMovie '08 doesn't like. However, while reviewing your comment, I noted that the iPhoto slideshow export options have changed and no longer offers the "full animation MPEG-4/AAC" compression format. Unfortunately, my original post is now outdated, so here is an update:
1) The best approach is still to use QT Pro if you have it. I too the morning off and created a quickie tutorial which demonstrates how you can do this. CLICK HERE TO VIEW
2) Since you seem to be having problems with MPEG Streamclip when making conversions, I also put together a secondary quickie tutorial demonstrating how GarageBand can be used to make your iPhoto slideshow iMovie '08 compatible if you don't have QT Pro. CLICK HERE TO VIEW

• 16x9 aspect ratio quicktime movie switches to 4x3 in idvd

I have a quicktime movie that has a 16x9 aspect ratio. In Info the dimensions show up as 720x480 (853x480) and when opened in Quicktime it is opening in the correct aspect ratio it was created. After bringing the Quicktime movie into an idvd project that was set up for 16x9, when I click on the movie, it shows up as a 4x3 movie, and the images are noticeably distorted. Any ideas on how to resolve this? Thanks.

A solution is to use something called Anamorphizer that sets the file's widescreen flag so that it is recognized as anamorphically squeezed widescreen.
Get Anamorphizer at http://homepage.mac.com/sith33/FileSharing34.html
Make sure Quicktime 7 is open before you try Anamorphizer. (NOTE: You MUST use Quicktime 7 and NOT Quicktime X)
Place a copy of your movie clip in a new folder and drag that clip over the Anamorphizer icon. This should create a second file in that folder that start with Anamorphic- This is the reference movie you drag-and-drop into iDVD. Note that your clip in that folder (which is the movie the reference movie points to, must not be moved or deleted).

• Why can't I send quicktime movies via attachment?

Hello everyone
This is my first post since making the transition over to mac a few months ago. While the transition has been pretty smooth, I have run into a little problem which I can't seem to get my head around.
I have recently started using .mac as my primary email account. Most of my friends do not have a .mac account (80% have hotmail accounts) but sending photos and text-based emails have not been a problem.
However, I've been trying to send quicktime movie files as attachments (< 10 mb limit) and I keep getting a error message "Can not send message using server "smtp.mac.com".
From quickly browsing the discussion boards, there was a suggestion to change the port settings from 25 to 587 which I tried. Unfortunately, It didn't made a difference so I've changed it back.
I am currently participating in the 60 day trial - does apple place any restrictions on what I can or can't send during that period?
I know I've probably made a silly mistake somewhere - I just can't seem to find it.
Any help would be most appreciated
Thank you

Usually webmail servers with size limits refuse to accept a message
that is too long and generally notify you of that.
True if a message that exceeds the overall message size limit for the recipient's incoming mail server is actually sent.
I'm basing my conclusion this is an overall message size limit problem on the size of one of the pre-encoded QuickTime files the OP has tried to send and the following copied from his first post in this thread.
I have recently started using .mac as my primary email account. Most of my friends do not have a .mac account (80% have hotmail accounts) but sending photos and text-based emails have not been a problem.
I don't believe he is accessing/using his Hotmail account in Mail to send these messages since he referred to trying to send a QuickTime file attachment to his Hotmail account with his .Mac account via the Mail.app but I may be wrong.
Since you are a relatively new Mail.app user, I'll give you an example of an improper error message provided by the Mail.app.
If the incoming mail server for an account that you access with the Mail.app is down or experiencing a temporary problem, the Mail.app will prompt you to manually enter the account's password when checking the account for new Mail even though this password is stored in your Keychain instead of a more proper error message such as:
There was a problem communicating with the incoming mail server for this account.
The incoming mail server is not available and may be down or experiencing a problem.
Please check with your ISP or email account provider for this account.
Sometimes there is a problem with the Keychain password for the account that running Keychain First Aid will (or should) resolve but the problem is not having any idea where to look or where the problem lies based on this prompt to manually enter the account's password only.
I've been using the Mail.app exclusively since Jaguar was introduced and such an improper prompt without a valid error message is my biggest complaint about the application.
Sorry to get off topic here.

• Why did Apple remove the "All Movie" category from the purchased movies menu?

We have purchased over 200 moivies from itunes, and until the most recent software update we could always view all of our movies together on Apple TV. When you choose purchased movies the "All Movies" category is no longer available, it's been replaced by "Shared Movies" which would include movies purchased by your family members. Now the only way to play your purchased movies is to go to the different genres below, that is a problem because it's not easy to determine what genre the movies you want falls into....for example the Star Wars Movies series is divided in to two different categories, the same goes for all of our kids movies, they are in mutlipule categories which makes it hard to scroll throug multipule categories to find the movies you want. This seems like such a small thing, but really does make Apple TV much more complicated and frustrating to use. Please HELP Apple and bring the All Movies Category back! Thank you.

I don't use family sharing either, so I'm not sure of the implications. However, assuming this is something to do with family sharing (some doubt, I saw another thread where a poster had the menu missing and didn't use family sharing) it would appear that it is intentional for it to appear in one state but not in another, this tends to tell me it's received a good coat of thinking about.
I sincerely doubt there's much thought gone into a retrograde user interface and experience

• Why did our information merge on each others phones?

My husband and I share the same apple account on our phones so whenever he downloads something new it downloads on my phone as well and vice-versa.
Just recently, after iOS 6 update, we noticed that his contacts merged with my iPhone & my contacts have merged with his. Also, he is getting notifications from an app that we share... But the notifications are from MY friends on facebook. The app is called voxer and whenever someone (from my Facebook friends) sign up, my husband gets the notification. Which is really weird because im not even signed on to Facebook on his phone. Somehow my information has merged with his phone and his mine. Why is this? Is there a way I can make things back to normal? Thanks in advanced.

• Why did apple trailers and quicktime stop working together all of a sudden?

I'm running Chrome and Firefox and Apple Trailers suddenly stopped launching HD trailers through Quicktime X. It was working automatically a few weeks ago. The only info i can find on the net is years old. Anyone else having this problem? Anyone fix it?

I've been having the same problem, I think since updating to Lion. HD trailers will only load through Safari, no other browser.

• Why did Apple eliminate "Save as a .pict file" from Preview?

I have more than 400 photos and clip art items saved as .pict files for use in pubs I do in Quark 8. Now Preview doesn't have the .pict function as an option. Is there another way to open those files? QuickTime won't do it, tried that. Help!

I believe it is only available if Preview is running in 32 bit mode. Anyway, when I ran it in the default 64 bit mode, I get this:

• Why did the trace NOT show the other switches in between?

I have a PC that is connected to a switch (A) in a network. Switch A has many switches in between and connects to another switch B. When I did a trace to the server, the last switch I see in the result is switch B. Also, when I checked to which port of switch B that the server was connected, It showed as Po1. When I did a show cdp neighbor for the interfaces for the interfaces involved inthe bundle, I get a switch and then another. Why did the trace NOT show the other switches in between? Why did I get an arp on Switch B? Could some one explain?

It's hard to tell, but if you have L2 switches, the addresses on those L2 switches are for management purposes only and you won't see a response from a trace. The only time you'll see a response is when the packet is routed between devices and not switched. You'll get an arp request/response across a single vlan. If you have vlan 10 across 10 switches, all 10 switches will see an arp request because they're broadcasted throughout the whole vlan.

• Missing Render Files / Problem Exporting Quicktime Movie

Everything was going great on my 21 minute project.
I had exported it to iDVD via a Quicktime movie and it looked great in widescreen format. It worked perfectly.
Now, for whatever reason, when I load my project, I get a message saying the Render Files are missing. I am unable to locate them anywhere. I had them stored along with my project on an external firewire 400 drive.
So I press "continue" without finding the missing files.
Now when I export my movie, it appears 4:3 with gray vertical bars on the side!
When I view the project on the canvas, it looks perfect as 16:9. Everything looks normal in FCE.
Did a render file get corrupted or something? Is there a way to delete all the "old" render files and tell Final Cut Express to re-render my entire new project? Would that solve my problem?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I did what you said and the "exported" file says:
Kind: Final Cut Express Movie File
Under More Info it says:
720x480 Integer (Little Indian) Timecode
Total Bit Rate: 30,313
Why am I trying to export?
Before I ran into trouble, I would export my FCE project using the Export Quicktime Movie command.
I then used iDVD (set to 16:9) to burn to DVD.
It worked perfectly before.
But now, all of a sudden, the same project always shows up at 4:3, whether played in Quicktime or when burned to DVD using iDVD set to 16:9.
The version of FCE is 4.0 and the version of Quicktime is 7.4.5
Thank you again for trying to help me!

Your external drive is probably formatted as MS-DOS. It has a file size limit of either 2Gb if formatted as FAT16 or 4GB if formatted as FAT32.
In either case, reformat the drive to Mac OS Extended. You will lose any material on the drive in the reformat process unless you copy it to another drive.
