Why did rebuilding my Aperture library increase its size by 50 GB?

After updating to 3.3, library conversion was no problem, but I rebuilt the library today and its size increased from 125 GB to 173 GB. This is large enough to be discomforting. All masters (orginals, I guess, now) are referenced.

I have maintain previews off. For ones that I need (like to share with iPhone, Flickr, etc.), I generate them manually. I might try deleting all previews and see what happens to the library size.
I rebuilt because vault updates (for both exisiting and new vaults) were hanging.

  • Having Aperture library on its own drive?

I'm wondering if it would be advantageous to move the Aperture library to its own drive. I currently have 2 different internal RAID 0 volumes. One of them is comprised of two WD Raptor drives and is my boot drive and contains my applications and Aperture library. The other drive contains (some of) the referenced files and my data. Given that I am a heavy Aperture user (350,000 referenced images in a 150gb library) I'm wondering if I wouldn't be better off having the library be the only thing on the Raptors. I'm guessing that with a library this big, disk fragmentation could be a major bottleneck, plus I would also gain some speed advantages by having my volume only be 50% full (instead of 75%).
Do you think I am making this overcomplicated for a small speed advantage, or I might I see significant gains?
    thanks,
    Dave

    Hi both,
Firstly i typo'ed the RAID number (sorry but sounds like you realized).
Subjective / empirical results from my own tests with my needs in mind:
I've noticed small performance improvements moving from FW400 to eSATA externals but frankly with 8Mpix/24Mb files sizes for the RAW's it's not been a significant contribution to decision criteria for me. Moving from USB 2 to FW400 was significant, esp. for launching Aperture, importing and exporting. During editing/adjustments, FW400 was quite acceptable.
As for RAM, moving from 2.5Gb to 4.5Gb gained me some when I was also running PS CS3 and other apps. (Mail, Safari, MS Office 2004/Rosetta etc.). At 4.5Gb, I rarely run into much virtual memory paging. My suggestion is to launch Activity Monitor and just see how you are using RAM for your workload. More RAM will achieve nothing at all if no paging to disk is taking place.
Aperture is reasonably multi-threaded but import to some extent and export primarily are the best examples of where the extra cores add value. Once into image manipulation, my 4-cores tick along at idle for the most part and sadly I Activity Monitor doesn't show GPU performance. Maybe the X1900 G5 card is maxed out (likely) but I don't know. I did a test with 2 x graphics cards under Aperture v1.1 but it showed no improvement whatsoever. Unknown whether Aperture v2.x will multi-thread gpu calls but I think not .... possibly core image limitation in Leopard.

  • Vault (external) file size Versus Aperture Library (internal) file size discrepancy?

Using Aperture 3.3.1 (all my images are Referenced). I created my first vault on an external hard drive. The Vault.apvault file size is 32.8 GB. My Aperture Library.aplibrary file size on my iMac hard drive is 81.6 GB. So I am wondering if I have a full back-up in Vault or not. Seems like a large discrepency in file size. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Do any Images that you don't expect show up when you filter "Photos" using the Rule "File Status" with the argument "Managed"?
If not, then close Aperture and repair your database.  Instructions are on the Apple Aperture trouble-shooting page.
    Does that make any difference?

    Morning alex navarro,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For troubleshooting on this, take a look at this article:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
Third-party cases can interfere with the autofocus/exposure feature and the flash (iPhone 4 only); try removing the case if you have image-quality issues with photos.
If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.
    Hope this helps,

  • Can't see videos on ipod nano - why did it let me purchase if its not compatible?  7th generation

New 7th generation ipod nano.  Purchased some videos on itunes, but can't play them on ipod - says it's uncompatible.  First ipod - why did it let me purchase them if I can't play them on my device?

If the iPod is set to auto transfer, then the songs on your iPod would be removed if you were deleting them from the iTunes library after putting them on the iPod.
If you have the iPod set to manual transfer of songs, the songs already on your iPod should not be removed each time you add new ones (even if you were to delete them from iTunes afterwards.
The directions in the manual don't match the summary screen if you are using the latest iTunes version 7.0.1.
If there's no particular reason you want to transfer songs manually, then try the auto method again and post back if you encounter problems.

  • Why did my iPad 2 abruptly reduce its wifi connectivity?

Roughly two weeks ago, my iPad 2 (64GB/3G/wifi), which I've had for about 18 months, suddenly reduced its ability to connect with wifi sources (in-house dual-band router) that I've been using for that entire time; full details are here. Note that my wife's iPad 2 (identical model, bought a little before mine) works just fine from the same spot (sees and connects to both bands, as mine used to, while mine now only sees one band and can't connect to it from that spot). At first, I thought it might be a side-effect of the latest iOS upgrade (6.1.3), but as noted, my wife's iPad works just fine and it's upgraded to 6.1.3 as well.
I've already done a lot of the usual remediations (reboot iPad, reboot router, etc.), none of which helped; it's pretty clear that the wifi in my iPad no longer works as well as it did. The one thing I haven't tried yet -- in case this is, in fact, some kind of software problem -- is a clean restore of the iPad.
Anyone else seen this problem and, if so, is there a solution?  Please read the link above before making suggestions; I have a fairly strong technical background and, as noted, have pursued most of the obvious paths.  Thanks.  ..bruce..

Test your iPad on some other networks. If it has problems there then it likely has developed a hardware problem. If so, contact Apple Support.

  • Why did mine only fit 725 songs its 8 gb my 4 g fit 800? do i need to do something in my itunes to make 1000 to 2000 fit?

i just bought an 8g nano but i loaded 725 songs just straight music no videos no pictures and it says its full i know its says i should be able to fit up to 2000 songs 725 is no where near that my 4g has 800 on it is there something i'm doing wrong or something i need to do i just dont get it and i've tried it a few times with the same results!!! Its getting very frustrating!!!!! thanks

If your songs are longer than 4 minutes on average or encoded at a bitrate higher than 128Kbps, fewer than 2000 will fit on the iPod.

  • Aperture Inspectors - increase font size?

    Hi
I just tidied up my various folders and so on that had got a wee bit messy with a fair amount of work recently.
My eyes not being quite what they used to be, I could not help but think how much easier it would be if I could increase the font size on all the project and file labels.
Is it possible to do that?

    In addition to Frank's suggestions:
Experiment with turning off font smoothing with fonts below a set size.  This helps some, and galls others.  The setting is at "System Preferences→Appearance".
There are other zooming tools in addition to the "scroll to zoom".  These are set at "System Preferences→Univarsal Access→Zoom→Options".
You might consider running your display at a smaller resolution (this will make the system fonts render larger).  "System Preferences→Display".
If you are still unsatisfied, you probably can find a third-party utility to change the system font settings.  (TinkerTool used to do this.)  I advise against it, as it almost always leads to unintended consequences, and in addition is difficult to maintain through the many updates and upgrades.
You could make a feature request of Apple, via "Aperture→Provide Aperture Feedback".  Even a "Small, Medium, Large" might be useful in the Library pane of the Inspector.
I use work bifocals with the "reading" lenses set specifically to the distance of a computer screen.  Invaluable, imho.

  • Why did my Firefox window minimise to half size, with the bottom half of the screen showing the window underneath the Firefox one?

Today the bottom half of my Firefox browser window just drew up to the halfway point on my screen, and will not maximise again. I tried taking Windows back to a point 2 days ago, but the problem remains.

Not sure what happened, but the problem disappeared by itself.

  • How can the Aperture Library grow when I delete images (incl Masters)?

When I delete pictures from an 'album or project' the Aperture Library increases in size - even when I specify to delete the Master image and all versions. This happens even after the trash is emptied.
Can anyone shed some light on this - thank you!
    George.
    dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   3GB - 2x160GB SATA

Ian - I was working on some albums and when I started the process, just out of curiosity I looked at the size of the "Aperture Library". Did not really jot down the number of the byte count. After deleting a buch of rejected images (I did have the second monitor window open showing the Aperture Lib size) and noticed that the library appeared to have increased. Not having been sure of my memory and number recollection, I deleted a whole album and the size was up by several 100 KB.
Just to give you an example - after having moved the 23.5GB Ap Lib to a safe place, I imported 4 different projects. 3 of the projects contained the images which were owned by me the last project contained the images which were owned by 'root'. The size of the Library went from about 170KB to 82MB. I deleted 4 images in one of 'my' projects and the Lib size went from 82 MB to 103.4MB. Deleted and additional 6 images in the same project and it was now down to 100MB. I then deleted an additional 15 images (originals owned by root) and the size went down to 86.5MB. Quit Aprture, the Lib size showed 84.1MB, proceded to empty the trash (which contained the 25 images) and the size now was 82.9MB. This is not a big deal, 900KB, but why and why the wild changes?
When I went back to read the Aperture manual, on page 55, it states that removing "Albums" does not delete the master image nor its other versions. When I delete a "project" the size of the Library does get reduced.
I guess, I have to be careful "when" I examine the Library size - and maybe I have answered my own question - Thank you all for your input -

  • Aperture library size vs iphoto

My aperture library and iphoto library have the same photos in them. Photos seem to be the same size and quality (I imported all photos from aperture into iPhoto). iPhoto's library is 20GB, Aperture is nearly 60. I'm guessing that while Aperture might be a hair bigger because of the previews (default settings there), 3x the size means something is wrong.
Is there a way to rebuild the Aperture library without losing all my albums/libraries?
While 60GB isn't the end of the world, I'm trying to move my photos to my laptop. And between photos and music, I'm really pushing my hard drive's capacity. That 40GB difference is going to mean I'll use iPhoto (09) vs Aperture (2), and I'm still partial to Aperture.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for their help. Redoing the previews helped. I think I had the previews set to "do not limit" on my dekstop and had just pulled the aperture library to my laptop. Redoing those previews took 20GB off my library size.
I see where you're coming from with the referenced images, but for now, it just keeps things simpler for my to keep it all managed. It's a brilliant solution though, if I need to in the future I might go that route. Especially when you think about possibilities with having the referenced images on Time Capsule or something. I don't take that many photos, and I upgrade my computer every year or two. I'm hoping the laptop hard drive space will expand gradually with my photo and music library, and by the time I have to worry about it, there will be another solution.
As far as how I went from Aperture to iPhoto (Ernie), I did (from iPhoto) file > show aperture library > then pulled them all in. I know there are issues with this though, you might check the iPhoto forum if you have trouble, there are work-arounds I believe.

  • Reducing Aperture Library size

Sorry if this has been dealt with before (I did a search and found nowt).
I'm fairly new to Aperture, and my Library has grown to 14GB (14,000 files). All files are referenced on an external drive (31GB of referenced files). I use a MacBook Air with SSD, so I start with 56GB after formatting. There were lots of duplicate photos (because I merged my iPhoto library with some offline archives I had). So, it was time to get rid of the dupes.
I deleted about 3,000 photos, but the library didn't get any smaller. I deleted all of the previews, but that only freed up 2GB. When I regenerated the previews, it went back to 14GB. After recovering from a prolonged bout of consternation, I searched the web. It appears that thumbnails are not deleted when photos are removed. This strikes me as a bug, or at the very least, poor design. So, I went in and removed all of the thumbnails as described here:
    http://brettgrossphotography.com/2008/04/24/aperture-library-slimming-the-size
After regenerating thumbnails and previews, my library was down to 6GB!
My question is: how do people on this forum deal with this unnecessary library bloat? I typically only keep a few percent of the photos from each import, so my library volume will again outpace the actual number of photos.
One possible approach is to create a new Aperture library from a vault. Because my files are referenced, it should create a new library from scratch and then generate the thumbnails and previews. Has anyone tried that? Seems preferable to opening packages and manually deleting files.
    -Rick

After a weekend of investigation, here's some more info on Aperture library size:
    1) I deleted another 1,000 or so photos, updated the vault, moved the library and then restored from the vault. The library size went from 6GB up to 7GB!
    2) Looking inside the old library and the restored one revealed:
    a) AP.Thumbnails files in the restored library were generally twice the size of the ones in the old one.
    b) Looking at the AP.Thumbnails files with File Juicer revealed that the restored library had created thumbnails of the master files as well as the versions. The original library had thumbnails for some master/version pairs, but nowhere near as many.
    3) I then deleted all of the AP.* files in the restored library, and got Aperture to regenerate the thumbnails. This reduced the library size to 5GB. The AP.Thumbnails files were much smaller.
So, my conclusion is that the best way to trim your library is to go in and delete all of the AP.* files, then regenerate the thumbnails. Restoring from a vault is not as effective.
Anyone have any intuitions as to why Aperture generates thumbnails for master files when there is an edited version? I'm fairly new to Aperture and have yet to see Aperture display thumbnails of masters if there is an edited version.

  • Aperture library updated with 3.5.1 lost all my keywords

I got a new Mac with maverick 10.9.2 downloaded Aperture 3.5.1 and updated my Aperture master library. Where did all my keywords go ?

Which version of Aperture did you upgrade from?
Where are the keywords missing? On your image files, when you are looking at the metadata in the "Info" pane in the Inspector? Below the images in the Browser? Or are the missing from the keywords list in the smart settings HUD; the Keywords HUD, or the Keywords Controls?
Sometimes the keywords simply appear to be missing, if you are viewing an event or album with new images. The keywords smart rules will only show the keywords, that already have been used for the images in the scope of the search.  And the Keywords HUD may have a filter set. Check, if the Search field at the top of the HUD is cleared, if the HUD appears to be empty.  The metadata overlays may have been disabled.
If you don't see keywords at all, repair your Aperture library:
    Quit Aperture.
Back up your Aperture library, if you do not have a current backup.
Use the Library First Aid Tools to repair or rebuild the Aperture Library:
Hold down the alt/option and command keys ⌥⌘ at the same time, while launching Aperture. Keep holding down the keys firmly, until you see the First Aid panel.
Select "Repair database" from the panel.  This may take a long time for a large library. Don't interrupt it.
If "Repair database" does not work, try again with he next option "Rebuild"

  • When I try to open my aperture library, I get the message "There was an error opening the database for the library "/Users/alyssabouma/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary". help!

When I try to open my Aperture Library, I get this message: "There was an error opening the database for the library “/Users/alyssabouma/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”.
I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the library....Help!!

    lyssalou,
what is your Aperture version and what is your MacOS X version?
What happened, before this problem occurred? Did you import images, install software, move the Aperture library?
I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the library....Help!!
What do you mean by reinstalling the library? Did you reinstall Aperture?
You might start the trouble shooting with using the Aperture Library First Aid Tools - repairing the permissions, repairing the library, and rebuilding, if necessary, see:
Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
Before rebuilding the library, make a backup of the Aperture Library, if you do not have one.
