Why different processing speeds...

Hi, I´m interested in purchasing a new Macbook Pro as my old iMac G5 is seemingly worthless. Could someone kindly explain why the 13" Macbooks have a larger processing unit and if the smaller laptop is faster than the 15" or 17"? This would help me greatly in deciding which size and processing speed is necessary for me. Thanks.

In short... they are not faster than their bigger brothers. The 13" model features 2 cores, where as the bigger models are quad core.

    Sounds like the CD drive died. Luckily they cost next to nothing to replace. Or get an external LaCie instead. I have a dual G4 1.25 and the CD drive was always so anemic I use a LaCie Porsche with it.

  • Can use the same thread safe variable in the different processes?

    Hello,
    Can  use the same thread safe variable in the different processes?  my application has a log file used to record some event, the log file will be accessed by the different process, is there any synchronous method to access the log file with CVI ?
    David

    Limiting concurrent access to shared resources can be better obtained by using locks: once created, the lock can be get by one requester at a time by calling CmtGetLock, the other being blocked in the same call until the lock is free. If you do not want to lock a process you can use CmtTryToGtLock instead.
    Don't forget to discard locks when you have finished using them or at program end.
    Alternatively you can PostDeferredCall a unique function (executed in the main thread) to write the log passing the apprpriate data to it.
    Proud to use LW/CVI from 3.1 on.

  • Comparing Processing Speeds

    What is the difference in processing speed between the iPhone 5s and 5c?

    That's just the thing, Apple doesn't sell .Mac on speed or even capacity really, they sell it on features. While they do allow you to see how much bandwidth you've currently used, there isn't a published "speed" baseline to gauge by.
    Whatever the speed of .Mac is, I'd say it's just barely baseline especially when you consider the kinds of pages (with PNG images) that iWeb creates. That's also why I assume most other hosts that DO have specific numbers listed would be above this and, unless you have a site that will receive tens of thousands of hits a day, you probably won't see a difference between one given host and another.

  • Processing speed of my MacBook is extremely slow when opening applications, whether Mail, Safari or MSOffice

    Problem description:
    The processing speed of any function is extremely slow - such as opening Mail, Safari, clicking on a page within Safari, switching to MS Word, adding a window in Safari, loading a page from Safari.  I get the spinning wheel most of the time before the action is completed. All other Macs which are newer in my home WiFi network operate just fine. I have done a top level (novice) check for malware, and haven’t found anything.  Any help you can suggest would be truly appreciated! Thank you!

  • In what circumstances could my app service simultaneously process requests in different processes?

    Hi,
    We recently encountered a scenario in our Cloud Services Web Role web app where simultaneous api calls on the same item occurred, such that IIS automatically allocated them to be handled on separate threads inside the same w3wp process. We needed to handle
    this scenario by rejecting/ignoring whichever call came in second, so we just used a static ConcurrentDictionary object to track which items were currently "locked".
    But I'm concerned that as we scale up eventually Azure will start routing such calls to different w3wp processes or even different machines.  In such a case, a static in-memory object is obviously not going to do the job.  For now all I want to
    do is find out what happens in the scenario where two requests are handled by different processes/machines - so what's the easiest way to trigger an Azure web role into this behaviour?
    Thanks
    Dylan

    I've confirmed via MS support that my assumptions were basically correct - if you have Instances = 1 then all requests for a single web application will be handled by one instance of the relevant w3wp process.
    If Instances > 1 then they might be handled by w3wp processes on separate virtual machines. There's no known scenario where there would be multiple w3wp processes on one machine, so if you need to handle concurrency for a scalable web-app, you have to
    use some central resource that is available to all instances.

  • Creating pocess intance of a different process and passing arguments

    Creating Process instance of a different process:
    I have two different process: Main_Flow (id: MainFlow) and Second_Flow (id: SecondFlow). In the first process I am reading a csv file. Each line of the file has four columns. After reading each line I have to initiate Second_Flow and pass the read data from the file. (Pls find the code below for the whole process):
         fileReader = FileReader(arg1 : fullFileName);//filename is of file type and have file name and path
         Java.Io.BufferedReader reader = BufferedReader(arg1 : fileReader);
         String str;
         int countLines = 0;
         while ((str = reader.readLine()) != null)
              strColumn = str.split(delim : ",");
                   int ColumnCnt = 0;
                   while (ColumnCnt < 4)
                        //defining variables
                        String appNo;
                        String custNo;
                        String loanAmm;
                        String loanDate;
                        //logMessage("Value at Column: " + ColumnCnt + " is " + strColumn[ColumnCnt]);
                        if (ColumnCnt == 0)
                             arrLoanData["appNo"] = strColumn[ColumnCnt];
                        else if (ColumnCnt == 1)
                             arrLoanData["custNo"] = strColumn[ColumnCnt];
                        else if (ColumnCnt == 2)
                             arrLoanData["loanAmm"] = strColumn[ColumnCnt];
                        else if (ColumnCnt == 3)
                             arrLoanData["loanDate"] = strColumn[ColumnCnt];
                        arrLoanData["descriptionArg"] = "AutoInstance: " + formatTime('now', timeStyle : Time.SHORT);
                        arrLoanData["genByArg"] = "Automatic";
                        ProcessInstance.create(processId : "/SecondFlow", arguments : arrLoanData, argumentsSetName : "BeginIn");
                        ColumnCnt = ColumnCnt + 1;
              countLines = countLines + 1;
    (“The code is in Java and not in PBL”)
    I have to pass appNo, custNo, loanAmm and loanDate as the arguments. The Argument will be of Any[String] type. The argument set name of Second_Flow is “BeginIn”. But I am not getting anything in Second_Flow.
    What can I do in the argument mapping of begin of Second_Flow to get the passed argument (array)?

    the argument 'arguments' for the method ProcessInstance.create receives a map of the arguments that the 'argumentSetName' argument set will receive.
    so for example if your second flow has 2 arguments, String name, Decimal value and String[] content your method invocation would be:
    ProcessInstance.create(processId : "/SecondFlow", arguments : {"name": strNameFromCsv, "value": valueFromCsv, "content": ["a","b","c","d"]}, argumentsSetName : "BeginIn");

  • Is there a different process to upload video podcast or is it the same?

    Is there a different process to upload video podcast or is it the same process?

    Exactly the same. The only difference lies in the code within the 'enclosure' tag which needs to match the file type, and most podcast creation programs and service will handle that for you. However you need to be aware that you are limited to .m4v, .mov or .mp4 files (not Windows Media, RealMedia or Flash).

  • Switching from PC to Mac, have question about processing speed

    Hi, I am going to buy a used Mac off of ebay and I am pretty clueless about where to start. I am not very knowledgable when it comes to the difference in processing speeds on pc's and apples both and have just been using what has been passed along. I am on a budget and cannot afford to do a bunch of upgrades when I get a new (to me) apple. I am currently working on a old pc (8 years?) that has had as many upgrades as it can handle. It is a Pentium III 548 mhz, 384 mb of ram and 40g hd on Windows XP. The Apple that I am stuck on getting right now is a G3 with a bunch of upgrades. It is an Imac PowerPC g3 with a 600mhz processor, 512 mb of memory, 120 gb hard drive. It has OS X 10.4 Tiger and ILife and has a single processor. It has a airport extreme card also. My question is 1) Does it take less mhz and ram to run the operating system for an apple and 2) am I going to notice a big difference in speed between what I have now and with the apple? The g3 is $249 and comes with a 90 day guarantee minus shipping. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!
    Tracy

    I'd save your money or apply it to an Apple G4 (AGP or newer) tower. Depending on how it was configured, you may find that your PIII was a little faster loading web pages than the 600 MHz iMac. My 1 GHz P3s are faster than my iMac DV G3-400 MHz models. I think $249 plus shipping for a 5 or 6 year-old iMac is a bit high. I picked up one of my G3-400 MHz iMac DVs for $20 at a thrift store. If there are any in your area that accept donated computers, you might want to check for a local bargain. While the 600 MHz model that you described is loaded, that's about as far as it goes, other than bumping the memory to 1 GB, but that would likely involve removing a pair of 256 MB DIMMs already in it, and buying a pair of 512 MB DIMMs. If it has a single 512 MB DIMM installed, you wouldn't have to spend as much. Selling the computer with Tiger installed but without the OS installer media will eventually put you in a bind, when you'll need to boot from the installer CD to perform disk repair maintenance. Some may consider Tiger to be a bit demanding of that iMac's system resources, preferring the predecessor "Panther" instead. The bottom line is that the iMac is somewhat limited, in terms of design (no PCI slots) and/or future upgrade potential. If it will suit your needs as a starter Mac, try finding a comparable model for less. You might also check for used computer dealers in your area, as that saves the cost of shipping, and return shipping - if there's a problem. The G4 tower has more potential for hardware tweaking, if you decide to stick with the Mac OS. You can find G4 towers at eBay selling for less than $249, but you'd need to have a monitor. Is space at a premium, in terms of a preference for the iMac's compact form factor? There is a direct correlation between the OS version and the optimal processor speed and amount of installed memory to adequately run it. OS X needs/uses more memory than the older, pre-OS Mac versions, just as Vista or XP2 requires more memory than Windows Me or 98SE. A comparison of Intel's P3s to Apple's G3s or G4s gets into the debate over which one handles more instructions per clock cycle than the other at a given speed. It's difficult to do a head-to-head comparison, because the hardware and software is not the same.

  • Non-Reentrant VI executing in different Process Stacks

    I am creating a DLL which can be called by several different processes on a machine at the same time. If I have a non-reentrant VI in the API, do the same restrictions apply between processes as if they were in the same process? For example, if I call "Get Shorty.vi" which is a non-reentrant VI from 2 places in the same process, at the same time, the first call will start executing, and the second call will wait till the first call is done. When called from 2 different process stacks, there is supposed to be total seperation of memory windows, so logic tells me that this restriction would not apply if that same VI were called from 2 different processes.
    The catch is that the VI Library installed by the run-time engine is used by both processes as well. Would this, in effect, cause the same behavior between 2 calls to the same VI both in process and out?
    Thanks for any help you can provide. This is not a easy to describe concept, so feel free to ask for clarification if needed.

    I understand that the memory spaces are supposed to be completly seperate. The question is that if 2 processes call the same function in the same dll at the same time... will one process have to wait on the other process to finish before being allowed to execute? My feeling on this is no, it would not have to wait, but I am hoping that someone out there has a more difinitive answer.
    There is no shared memory mechanisms set up in this vi.. ie for persistant data between execution processes. I am not even sure if this is possible with LV dll's, but I thought I would throw that in there since I know it is possible in general.
    Thanks again for your help guys... keep em comming. Hopefully this will help clear up other peoples perceptions on how dll execution is handled in LV if we can nail this down a bit more.

  • Severe corruption of .MOV files in Lightroom & unusable processing speed

    Hi all,
    I run on an Intel i7 quad core, 12 GB Ram, 2 GB Graphics Card (nvidia), Raid 0, 2x512 GB Harddisk space (1 TB), Windows Vista 64bit using the latest cut of Lightroom 3.4.1 64bit.
    Using a Canon 7D with latest firmware updates, for RAW/JPG/MOV - this is the only source of all files that I currently use in Lightroom.
    First Question regarding corruption of .MOV files:
    Once I copy my files over from the camera onto my computer, I can play all .MOV files seemlessly with no flaws or hiccups (using multiple movie players), after I import the files in the directory (this includes the .JPG's, .RAW's, and .MOV's) into Lightroom, my .MOV files no longer play on my computer, the files begin to stutter and jolt, and are completely unusable. You can imagine my frustration as I've only recently added a huge chunk of my files to be cataloged by Lightroom, resulting in the last years worth of .MOV files being corrupted and ruined.
    I am wondering if anyone has had this issue before and if they've found a way to fix it? I understand I could simply un-tick the import of .MOV files (and do so from now on), but I find it baffling that Lightroom is ruining the .MOV files - as it's not actually meant to touch the original files themselves is it? It's meant to add it's own layer of things to do to that file, stored in its own catalogue never meant to actually change the original files themselves.
    Second question regarding unusable processing speed:
    When DEVELOPing in Lightroom (I develop on two 24" monitors, both displaying at 1920x1200) it can take anywhere between 10-20 seconds for what I'm actually doing to take effect, ie. spot removal or changing the noise levels of a photo. My catalog currently has 10438 photos in it - is this overwhelming for Lightroom?
    I love Lightroom and its functionality - when I first started using it these problems didn't seem to exist, so I'm unaware if it's an update or if it's just the increase in photos it has catalog'd that're bogging it down. I would love to resolve these matters as Lightroom is definitely where I want to be.
    regards,
    Emilio

    Thanks for your response,
    After what you said, in having absolutely no issue with .MOV files, I decided to ensure every drive on my computer was up-to-date and all software packages were final cut versions.
    When I started playing my .MOV files (using VLC version 1.1.10 as standard), the files played fine after a graphics card update/VLC update/Windows system update/computer reboot (Lightroom NOT loaded) - So you are absolutely right, Lightroom is NOT in any way affecting my original .MOV Files, however:
    When I then loaded Lightroom up, and started to then play my .MOV files (whilst Lightroom was running, and still using VLC (standard default player) (no other packages loaded), the files would begin to jolt/jitter/ struggle to play again.
    If I monitor Task manager/Resources the only noticable heavy usage on Lightroom is having dedicated itself 1.7 GB of memory (not that much considering 12 GB is available), but also that clicking on any picture (whilst in grid-view, showing .CR2+.JPG as one, second monitor showing preview image) all of my 8 CPU's would spike to 90-100% for a second or so then drop down - fair enough.
    I then close Lightroom and my .MOV files still don't play accurately - after a while (approx 30 minutes) my .MOV files will play seemlessly fine again.
    So, I stand corrected that Lightroom is, in fact, NOT corrupting my files and regret my title choice, but is Lightroom doing something to my system which is making it hang/struggle whilst Lightroom seems to flush/go through its buffer?
    Also what import preview do you set your catalog to? 1:1 then wait for it to complete the full import or standard?
    Another major issue I'm having is when exporting multiple files (200+ or so), I notice the exporting process is fast initially then dramatically slows down my whole computer as all my RAM (the full 12 GB's) gets sucked up - after 60 or so photo exports Lightroom would have used the full 12 GB Ram I have available, and stopping the export does NOT free up the Ram - I need to completely close Lightroom (which then frees up the used RAM).
    Thanks in advanced

    poppy-
    Aperture is a hardware hog. Unfortunately your iMac  has a weak processing unit and relatively weak graphics, both of which are important for Aperture performance. Your iMac will never run Aperture particularly well; it may or may not be adequate for your needs.
    I ran Aperture with weak hardware (2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo 2006 Macbook Pro, 3 GB RAM) for years. It was tolerable because I also used a Mac Pro for heavy editing work. With weak hardware we need to optimize everywhere we can. I suggest:
    • Do not bother running Aperture until you add RAM.
    • Before each Aperture session restart the Mac to clear possible memory leaks, and run only Aperture by itself unless you have 6 GB or more RAM on board.
    • Drives slow as they fill so verify that all hard drives are no more than approximately 70% full as a guideline. Even less full is better.
    • Keep the Library size reasonable by using a referenced-Masters workflow with Masters on external drives. Back up originals before import into Aperture or any other images app.
    Good luck!

    The processing speed has decreased over a period of time. Although i don't keep heavy data in the system. I have been able to fix it couple of times, but it keeps recurring every few weeks.

    You won't get full performance from Mavericks with only 2 GB of memory.
    One of the myths that circulate on this site is the myth that you must maintain a certain percentage, such as 10% or 15%, of free space on the startup volume. That myth is based on nothing except the fact that people keep repeating it.
    According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
