Why do alert sounds vanish?

This happened under Lion, too, but it seems to occur even faster under Mountain Lion. For no apparent reason, alert sounds for emptying the trash, etc, just stop working. They start again if I reboot, but I shouldn't have to do that. Any suggestions? And thanks!

No. I've sent information to Apple through its feedback link, but I've heard nothing further from forum members or through any other source.

  • Alert sounds ; why do they stop?

I'm using a Curve 8900 on AT&T;  my alert sounds stop working, without me changing profiles, without me changing the details of any profile, without me doing anything.   I can get them working again by re-booting, but only for a while.  Within a few hours, they stop again.  Not 100% sure, but "vibrate only" seems not affected.  Extremely frustrating, especially when I'm counting on the alarm, you know?   Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean your audible alerts stop, as in do not make any sound at all....
or do you mean they "stop" as in do work and then after 15 minutes or so stop making the audible sound?

  • Why am I not getting any alert sounds in Lion?

I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion 10.7.3 and find that I am not getting any alert sounds. Mail sounds work, voice notification [as in giving me the time on the hour and other spoken alerts] works, but simple things like trash emptying, taking items out of the dock or Finder side bar don't work at all.
I gone to System Prefs many times to try and tweak some things. Discovered that I had a lot of old Xounds sounds, so I deleted those. I'm at a real loss here folks, so if someone can point me in the right direction, I shall be forever thankful!

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • Why my N900 has a problem with beeps/alert sounds!...

I have a weird problem with my N900 and the alert sounds.
They seem to stutter or not sound smoothly as if something is slowing them.
It happens on message alerts, email, sms and camera shutter etc.
Difficult to describe. I am not technical but it almost seems like it can't keep up maybe the CPU or memory???
Had the problem before and after PR1.2..
Also noticed stutter/pausing on media player as per this clip below from another user.

Searched discussion and can't see a topic but have read someone else mentioning something similar once.

You may have to see about exchanging that MacBook/Pro for another before time runs out, and hope the replacement does not have this issue; and if you have access to an Apple Store with Genius, you may be able to get an appointment to discuss this issue and the exchange prospect, if it comes to that before 14 days from purchase date go by.
I've looked a little and seen a few different problems with some of the hardware you have, but not the same issue with the green color, etc. Do you have a different external display device to see if the color is due to the internal graphics hardware in the MacBookPro retina?
Hopefully you can get an answer in this matter.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Alerts sounds are not working after upgrading to iOS 7.1.2

    Hi,
I've noticed that all the alerts sounds are not working anymore after upgrading my iPhone 4S to iOS 7.1.2
I’ve reviewed similar posts regarding the same issue; and it seems this is a common issue in iPhone 4S when upgrade to iOS 7.1.2.
Apple, please Advise if there anything I can do to resolve the issue especially that my work deepens on the push emails and alerts that requires prompt response.

    I got this issue resolved.
It caused due to some dirt in the charger slot; such dirt caused the phone to assume as if it is connected to a car kit and that is why it does not produce any sound except the Ringer and the Alarm.
It has been fixed by cleaning the charger slot by toothbrush! with some
    drops of a cleaner.
Do not do it by yourself, as it might be a risk; rather, let it to be done by an expert.

  • Text message vibrate instead of alert sound

i am in a text message conversation screen (as opposed to the main message screen that lists my messages), and my phone ringer is on with vibrate activated. however when i receive a text message within the conversation, it only vibrates with no sound alert. is this normal?

Even just going back to the list of converstatoins (button in top left) you will not get alert sound while in the App.  Again, it assumes you are looking at it and seeing the indicators pop up for number of messages etc for each conversation.
You have to be out of the app for it to give a sound.
If you are not expecting a msg right away then why stay in it?  Press home and go back to home screen and wait.

  • Probably a stupid question. Typing = system alert sound

I went to use iWeb for the first time and I cannot figure out why this is happening.
Every time I click in a text box or type within a text box every click or keystroke gives me the system alert sound.
No clue why it is doing this. No other app is doing this.

Just to make clear. I have full access. I can select with clicks and I get characters when I type. It's just accompanied with the current system alert sound.
It's weird, after I posted my first message I went back to iWeb and typed and it didn't give me any alert sound. I went into other apps and then went back and the alert sound was back.

  • Alert sounds in Safari and other Mac OS products

I am a PC to Mac convert. I would like to find a list of the alert sounds so that I can see what my system is trying to tell me. I have seen the Library of sounds but it does not tell which sounds go with what alerts. Can someone please point me the right direction?
    Thanks

The sounds themselves have no particular meaning, they alert you to when you make an error or when a dialog box appears in that active window. In the Finder, if you open Help and look for "alert sounds" in the Index, this is what it says:
    *Adjusting your computer's sound volume*
You can change the volume of all sounds playing through your computer's speakers. You can also select a separate volume for alert sounds (sounds your computer makes when alert dialogs appear). And you can mute your computer's sound.
Obviously, that's kind of vague, but that's the only description they provide. But there is a third-party "hack" that lets you assign specific sounds to specific actions in Mac OS X. You can download a free trial of Xsounds here. There are a variety of sound sets you can download that have already been pre-configured for the action they correspond to. If you like it, it's only $12, so why not try it?

  • Spontaneous system alert sounds

Every few minutes my MB Ro "purrs" (alert sounds). No apps need to be open when this occurs. Disk utility report is NR. Repaired permissions anyway. FWIW, Drive Genius 2 is unable to verify or repair the disc.
Any idea why this is happening, and how to stop it?? Tech support had no idea.
    Jeff

Well, it started recently but this MBP is almost 3 years old and I rarely use the widgets (and have not recently added to them).
Which one might you suspect? Other ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Weird alert sounds from my iphone

My iphone has suddenly started making an alert sound that I do not recognize and that I did not program it to make. and it isn't connected to a new email or text message or phone call or anything. it just does it! has anyone else had this issue?

okay I figured it out and I'm so embarrassed! It was my NOOK making the noise! the nook was sitting right next to my phone and I the Nook is always muted for all sounds but for some reason the notification volume had been turned up so that's what it was and that's why I didn't recognize it! Sorry!

  • Email Alert Sounds - Multiple Sounds

Can you assign different alert sounds for separate email accounts on the 4s?  I have two different email accounts on my iPhone.  I would like to set a different sound for each account.  Is this possible?

You used to be able to do this in a previous iOS version.  I know it used to be possible because my iPhone is set up that way right now.  As a matter of fact I just submitted a question asking how I can change the sound played for one of my accounts because the current sound is grating on my nerves.  Why did Apple take that function away?  I am hoping it was just an over sight and not intentional.  If it was intentional - that was a horrible decision on someone's part and they need to re-instate that function in the next iOS update.

  • Delayed system alert sounds

I have a little problem which is an annoyance more than anything else - though it could indicate a more serious problem.
The system alert sounds on my 17" PowerBook occur approximately two seconds after an alert winow appears. Sometimes I don't actually hear my prefered alert sound - I just hear the speaker make a very quite crackle.
When I shut down the alert sound which should accompany the Restart/Sleep/Cancel/Shutdown option is not heard until the desktop has disappeared and the progress wheel (not the beachball) is rotating.
    Any clues, please?
    TIA
    Alf

Systems before X played system beeps perfectly. OS X seems to read all beeps off the hard drive. I have never been able to get OS X to play a beep without accessing the hard drive, which annoys me far beyond this tiny little issue might deserve. I understand why systems should move away from direct calls to the hardware, but this is certainly a downgrade in the human interface, when what took microseconds in OS 6-9 now takes deciseconds. I've noticed that the cache holds the system beep a bit better in 10.4, so that there's a minimal delay, but still not as good as my old macs. The more able computers get, the harder it is for them to do the simple things. The corollary is that system programmers focus on new features instead of improving performance, or it's easier to write new code than to shorten old code.
