Why are all my contacts Unknowen in my phone book when they call me?
Look under system preferences on the mac at what is be controlled? Look at Mail, Contacts, Calendars. How many accounts are managing contacts? Just the cloud? the cloud and gmail? or cloud, gmail, yahoo, and exchange? If you have more than one contact account, then you will have different contact lists, if John Smith shows up in more than one of your contact lists, you will have multiple entries.
Pick a contact list that is your master, (I use iCloud), only turn on contact syncing for it. The same for your phone. Spend some time on the iCloud webset (www.icloud.com) and work on your contact list there. Clean it up, remove duplicates, etc...Changes will auto sync back to all your devices. Life gets much simplier.
Just remember, if you sync different contacts lists and a large number of people appear in your different lists, then they will appear as duplicates.

I just updated my Iphone 4s to the new operating system but lost ALL MY CONTACTS on my phone. The contact list on my phone is completely blank. PLEASE HELP!

If you are experiencing difficulties with the connection between your stereo and device, disconnect the device, and then power cycle the stereo and your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. When the Home screen reappears, reconnect your device. If you cannot power cycle the stereo, turn the car off and then back on to allow the stereo to power off.

If I delete a contact from my phone book, the number is still there when I go to type in a name to send a text message to, and is listed as 'other number'.
Can anyone please tell my why this is and how I can delete a number completely?
Thanks.Th einformation is stored in cache memory on the phone. The only way to get rid of it is to restore the phone as new and you will lose data and settings. Eventually the cache will be overwritten so just ignore it

It sounds like she deleted them all from your icloud account. If you have an iTunes backup, try this to possible recover your deleted contacts. http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4108
If that doesn't work, you might be stuck as Apple doesn't usually have a backup plan for intentional user deletion. You can try to call Apple though and see if there is anything else they can do to try and recover that deleted info for you.

You need to check other places where your contacts may be stored:
- iTunes/iCloud back up
- iCloud if you synced them to it -
person has access to my itunes.even if i change my password how will i manage to erase all my contacts from their phone?they have all my contacts on their phone and they are sending messages to all my friends.

PS:they had a new handset plugged it in to laptop used my apple id so all my contacts and app has gone onto thier phone toogo to icloud.com and log in. from there go to track my phone and see if his phone pops up. if it does send him a message saying he should stop. change your password after sending him the message.

Just bought new Mac pro when I sync my iPhone 4 i lost all my contacts on the phone .tried restoring from backup no luck .is there any way I can retrieve my contacts
Why don't you just restore the to your pc from your most recent backup? You'll get the warning about erasing the media on the phone, but since you'll have all of your media and apps restored from backup, you shouldn't have much of a problem.

the same problem happened to me also, i felt that while playing hay day, if some calls came in between and if i answered the call, the setting of all the icloud items turns off. (i have backup of all the items on icloud), after deleting the account and making settings of mail, contact, calander etc on on mode and after rebooting the phone, it again download from icloud server. but it is just a headache. do not know how to handle this.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unless you have the contacts backed up somewhere, you won't be able to restore them.
You and your son should have your own iCloud accounts then you can keep your own contacts and calendars etc and avoid deleting each others. -
My iPhone 4s won't display my contact names in my message, although the number is still linked to the correct contact in my phone book.

In Lion, the user's LIBRARY folder is hidden. So, it's not visible automatically.
Open Finder.
At the menu items at the top of your screen, click on GO (where you see Finder, File, Edit, View, Go, Help)
Next within the GO options, select the 'Go to Folder' option. You will see a window open to enter text.
Enter ~/Library and click the GO button.
Now you'll be in your user LIBRARY where you need to be to get to your address book file previously mentioned.
You want to open the Application Support folder then from inside there open the AddressBook folder. Then you can follow Barney's instructions. -

I recently deleted a contact from my phone book and when I send a text the same contact appears.. How do I remove it?
I don't believe there's much you can do about it...have a look at the "More Like This" pane on the right side of this page.
One way though to eliminate the issue (although not a very good way) is to restore the phone as new.
