Why Do BT use DLM? it just drives some people away...

Hello.Ive emailed a few depts in BT.When I first got broadband I ofc went with BT was told at the time I would get around 4.5mb
It turned out to be a lot less than that (3mb)because of the distance from the Exchange my downstream atten runs around 47DB.Well for months the DLM was just going crackers I would lose sync and the speed just kept dropping.Even BT agreed the service was poor and allowed me to leave.I went with an ISP on LLU  (that doesnt use any form of DLM) with some tweaking 15 DB profile and Fast path.I currently Get 6.5 mb and a stable line.
Surely If an LLU ISP can do this why cant BT?I do think BT should look into a protocol that allows itself a chance to do more tweaks add and remove things that sometimes just makes matters worse.
the reason I posted here tonight now I've been a customer of BT for many years (phone) in this climate everyone wants to try and save some money so getting a bundled package makes sense if you can save.
In this area (llanelli) its a big town.we dont even have 21CN. or even a hope of getting FTTC anytime soon.

Hi 21cn is due at your exchange end October 2011 hope that helps also he BT ip profiling system is currently being changed over to a system that gives 88.2% of connection speed and any change of sync causes the profile to change immediatley instead of the old 3/5dAy wait. Hope that info helps you

    how do you remove back up data from the memory storage? my storage data states that i have over 80gb of data used for back ups and i dont know why as i use a external hard drive as a time machine .now my 250gb flash storage is nearly full.. HELP!

    When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
    See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.

  • Using cache just for some classes

    Hi,
    I'd like to use datastore cache just for some persistent objects. The
    cache should be active just for some objects and disabled for some other
    objects.
    The only one way I found is the following: I defined the default cache
    time-out to 0 millisecs and this value is overridden for a particular
    class in the jdo metadata.
    For example, these are the global properties:
         <config-property name="dataCache" value="true"/>
         <config-property name="dataCacheTimeout" value="0"/>
    and this is the jdo metadata:
    <extension vendor-name="kodo" key="data-cache-timeout" value="10000"/>
    It works, but I don't like it. I'd like to turn off the cache in some way
    for classes that doesn't need it. I tryed to create a custom cache in this
    way:
    <config-property name="dataCache" value="false, true(Name=myCache)"/>
    or
    <config-property name="dataCache" value="false(Name=default),
    true(Name=myCache)"/>
    but Kodo says that a cache named "default" must be configured and error is
    raised.
    What happens when the cache timeout is 0? If the cache is read every time
    with 0 hits, I think that this is no good for performances, it would be
    better not reading the cache at all...

    Your best bet is to use the data-cache metadata extension in those
    classes that you don't want cached:
    <class name="MyVolatileClass">
    <extension vendor-name="kodo" key="data-cache" value="false"/>
    </class>
    If most of your classes should not be cached, you could also set the
    default cache's size (and soft reference size) to zero. This will,
    however, incur a small performance overhead.

    Just edited 20 film in FCPx all about 6 mins long all on 1 x 250gb flash drive
    Now i have another 10 to do but have no room on that drive.
    So i have been using my new 2tb drive to do the next 10 films with the footage on that drive, but i need elements from the first 20 films ie; graphics, common film elements etc to be added to the new 10 films.
    So I have copied all the footage, events and project folders from the 20 edited films over to my 2tb drive in a separate folder - ejected the 250gb drive (as i only have 2 thunderbolt slots and one is used for a 27 inch monitor on my macbook pro)
    .......my question is how do i load all of the 20 films into my project library so i can see all of the 30 films at once so i can copy and paste form one film to another - is this possible? and withlout messing up lol

    // any reason, why you color your post to 'invisible' low contrasted colors?? //
    I'm confused:
    by concept, there's Events and there's Projects.
    Events and Projects can be internal or on any ext. drive.
    You can use any Event in any Project.
    … so, why is the 'location' of your files on any relevance for your Projects ??
    Or, do you want to re-import done-Projects as 'Events'? Export,Import, done… (??)
    … sorry, maybe I'm just lost intranslation

    I just got a new MacBook Pro, and I tried to bring across my files from my last mac using time machine. After it was done copying I can't find my files anywhere but the space (about 130gb) has been used on my hard drive. Does anyone know how I can get to them? I did change my user name from 'user' while it was copying, could this have something to do with it?

    You don't want to do that by copying.
    Your best bet, by far, is to use Setup Assistant.  If your Mac is running Snow Leopard, see Using Setup Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard.
    If it came with Lion, it's a bit different: Using Setup Assistant on Lion

    Yes, you have WD software installed  REMOVE IT !!
    WD has warned its customers about their huge mistake that their software doesnt work on Mavericks and causes data loss.
    (also dont use WD drives anymore)

    Try the other USB port. If it still doesn't show up in Disk Utility then there may be something wrong with your Mac. Try something else in each USB port and see if it is seen. If the other thing, like a USB thumb drive, does show up in disk utiltiy then the USB ports are fine.
    Power down the system and restart with the drive connected, go to DU and see it it is seen.

    Why cant i use a bought call-tone bought through I-tones for calling tones for just one of my contacts?

    What makes you believe that you can't? To set a custom ringtone (or SMS tone) for a contact, go to that contact entry, tap the Edit button in the upper right. You can then edit both ringtones and SMS tones for that contact.

    Any ideas greatly appreciated, it will save me a journey to the apple store

    I have now solved it. I signed out of my iTunes account and then held down both the power buttons until the apple appeared. When I signed back in it started downloading.

    Id choose the I5 yes, depends on what your usage is going to be,
    ....your question about "128 gig being enough" begs the question for IDEALIZED USE of your macbook AIr
    In the case of a Macbook Air with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.  You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
    *Generally, unless you NEED the data at least once every few weeks or once a month,...it really does'nt NEED to be on the SSD of your Macbook Air.
    Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
    Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
    Ive got more APPS than any human should have on my 128gig AIR,..(50 or so),....and 10gig of working data, important files etc etc.
    Still have 82gig available....... the entire point is that someone shouldnt consider the Air a "storage device" for tons of pics, music, vids, etc.
    *Never consider any computer a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake that will, without fail, strike.
    For needs of packing around a LOT of "big data" with your Air in its case..., get a nice 1TB HD for $70, or even a 2TB drive not much bigger.
    Perfect 2TB HD, very slim, the "little giant"   made by Toshiba (have several of these) $119

  • Why is compressor using my main (application) disc drive?

    I’m using Compressor to convert a 2.5-hour .mov file to mpeg2/AAC. The destination is set to an external SATA drive, but the process is using the main application drive during the compressing process. The main drive has 50 GB available space but is running out of space during the conversion process. Is there a setting to direct which drive is used during compression? I don't understand why the main drive is being used when none of the project files are that drive and it is not the destination drive.

    Check:
    System Preferences>Apple QMaster>(Advanced Tab)>Shared Cluster Storage/Cluster Storage/Set...
    Choose your external hard drive.
    Attention: this is a permanent setting so when you disconnect your external drive the connection is lost.
    If this is not successful alone go back to (Setup Tab) and select "QuickCluster with services", check the Compressor service. Set the maximum Instances in "Options for selected services..." (select "Compressor" in the services list first to the number of your cores minus 4 cores. Hit "Start Sharing".
    hth
    sidenote: btw this shines a light on a recently introduced flaw in Compressor and the Cluster Storage setting. Former versions (<3.5.3) used the Cluster Storage as their intermediate render-destination, since it's latest evolution with the above described setting Compressor moves the segments to the destiantion as selected for the batch. This is unnecessary and slows down the merging process.

    Greetings Fraser Alexander,
    Erasing your Mac shouldn't harm your internal hard drive but erasing does clear Yosemite and everything else off of it.  Are you not able to restore it with your Time Machine backup?
    iCloud: Erase your device
    If you erase then find your Mac, you can restore the information on the Mac using a Time Machine backup. For more information, see the Apple Support article Recover your entire system. If you set an EFI firmware password on your Mac before it was lost, then erase it and later find it, you may need to take your Mac to an authorized repair center to unlock it before you can use it again.
