Why do deleted files still appear in Finder

Even after i move the files to Trash and empty the trash, the files still appear in finder. If I click on them I get some message indicating they aren't there or can't be found, but how do i get deleted files not to appear in finder. If I deleted them to clean up my docs, i don't want them anymore. It gets harder to clean up files when i keep seeing the files i already cleaned out and put to trash.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can only delete those files which you create yourself. If these are system files you are trying to trash, you'll need special permissions to delete them. Be careful though, if you trash the wrong files, you'll leave your system nonfunctional.
My software Force Empty Trash, or the competitor, Mac OS X Cocktail both can trash files created on the boot hard drive and override the permissions that may lock those files from deletion. Cocktail can trash more than my software can. But I would only use it for trashing stuff, and not cache cleanup, nor any other tool, without consulting a Mac expert. Cache cleanup of system cache can be very dangerous, and cause applications not to be able to launch anymore, including system applications. The link to my software*:

I also have reference there to where you can get Cocktail.

  • Why do my files not appear in Finder despite being otherwise accessible?

Last night I downloaded a bunch of html files via ftp so I could work on a site locally using MAMP.
The site appears in my web browser at localhost:8888/sitename/ and I can navigate round it without any problem but when I went to open the individual pages for editing in Sublime 2 the containing folder appears empty.
If I do Get info the dialogue shows 0Kb and no files. All folder permissions are normal.
After some hunting around I tried searching for the files in Finder only for them to appear in search results.
I can then see and browse the files in the finder search results - Get info on teh folder shows 35MB and the correct number of files.
But if I go back to browsing  in Finder the folder shows empty again (intense head scratching).
In Terminal I can cd to the folder and see all of the files no problem.
Running Repair Disk permissions didn't seem to have any effect. I've also tried restarting with no effect.

    Launch the Terminal application.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy into the Terminal window — do not type — and press the space bar:
    ls -Oel
Now switch to the Finder and drag the problem folder into the Terminal window. More text will be added to what you entered.
Click in the Terminal window to activate it, then press return.
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If any personal information appears in the output, edit before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • Deleted files still showing/opening in MS Excel

    Hi
I have 6 files in MS excel that were deleted from my docs in finder and I did secure empty of the trash.  However, the files still appear and can be opened in excel. I tried searching for them by file name but can't seem to locate where excel is hiding them on my MacBook Air. I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and Microsoft Office for Mac 2011.
    Any Suggestions?
    Thanks

Red Dwarf - Thanks for the reply, the files were not in emails and i was not able to get the yellow box but you gave me another idea. I added a footer to the document with the path name to see where it was and discovered that it was saving it as a template.  So after more searching I was able to find a solution on an office support page which I have shared below.  Thanks
    In the Finder, open /Users/ username/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/My Templates.
NOTE   If you are using Mac OS X 7 (Lion), the Library folder is hidden by default. To show the Library folder, in the Finder, click the Go menu, and then hold down OPTION .
Drag the templates that you want to delete to the Trash.

  • Why do deleted Outlook emails remain in finder?

Why do delete outlook emails remain in finder after deleting the emails in outlook?

Apparently Outlook never really deletes mail.  You can rebuild the database and then delete the backup of the original database that gets created when you do the rebuild.  But I don't think there any other way.
Use Outlook's help menu, type Rebuild, and select "Rebuild the office database" for instructions.
Note, there is a way to permanently delete mail if it is still in the Deleted Items mail box.  That is to press the shift key while selecting the items to be permanently deleted.  You will get a dialog asking if it is ok to do that.

  • Deleted files still have preview in cover flow in finder window

After I delete files while in cover flow view mode in finder, the preview and filename do not match. In fact the preview of the deleted file remains when a different file is selected.  Every file below that shows a different preview.  It resets to normal if I close and reopen the folder.
edit: Upon further investigation I see I am not alone.  Someone else even posted a link to report the bug, which I did.

Support call gave the solution:  instead of 'Arrange by', use the 'clean up by' command under the view menu in Finder.  This does what arrange by used to, and while the menu options are more limited than 'arrange by', it doesn't default to the cover-flow behavior that is so irritating.
If you hate cover flow like I do, please send them feedback.  If enough of us complain about it, maybe they'll stop putting it all over the place.

  • Deleted site, still appears in SCCM 2012 console status: deleting...

Hi i recently encountered a problem after deleting a secondary site, but it seems to happen only under my user account on the primary site console, here's the thing
I deleted the site, and the log shows that the site was succesfully deleted, i connected to the server and the logs are ok, and the registry no longer has any SMS keys left to delete, and in programs files, both the configuration manager files, and the sql
files were also deleted/uninstalled correctly, but in my console, the site still appears as Deleting...
Note that I was the one who created it in the first place, and apparently I'm the only one who can still see it..., I open the console in both, the primary site server, and on my computer, and it shows as deleting, under Administration > sites configuration
    > sites, and I can still see the server on the site and site sistem roles, and that's it, and if I switch to the Central Site, is not there, which I guess is good
I checked on both my colleagues, and they don't see the site anywhere, just me under my user account connected to the primary site
Now, i did ran the Preinst /DELSITE command and it says that it couldn't find the data base for the site, which is good as well
Part of the problem is that, I have to re-install the site, and if I run the setup connected to the primary site under my account, it says that the name already exists (i have to re-use the site code as per request) and if I run the same setup but
connected to CAS or a colleague does it on primary or cas, the setup continues without the warning saying that the site code already exists
So I would just like to find a way to delete it from my console or find the reason that's causing it, to avoid further conflics for that secundary site

  • Why do Deleted files suddenly no longer show in Trash as they used to do

This morning I deleted an e-mail and then realised I needed some information from it. I naturally expected it to end up in the Trash folder as always, but when I opened the Trash none of my deleted files are there. I do not have 'empty on exit' set. I am using Thunderbird 31.4, on Windows 7 Professional. I have restarted both Thunderbird and Windows but to no avail. I have not changed any of my account settings or any of the options. This has not happened before. Any help would be welcome.

Thank you for all your efforts. As I said, I'm afraid the first link led to an item in Swedish (I think), which was just a single line and not recognisable as anything I knew. Your second link led to an item in English (thanks), and showed a page from 'settings'. I had not set settings to 'Empty on exit', or anything similar elsewhere, which might have been what you were suggesting I look at.
Since then, as foreshadowed, I have done an uninstall and reinstall and all is now well. I can only surmise that Thunderbird somehow became corrupt. Otherwise it's a mystery. Still a bit of a bother though, as I dislike not knowing why things happen.
    Thank you again.

  • Deleted files still taking up space

    Hi all,
I've done a search and can't find answers or figure it out. I'm manually managing my iPod through iTunes since I don't want everything to be synched. I've manually deleted various files on the iPod through iTunes, including all video files. Yet in the summary, iTunes still lists my iPod as having 3+ GB of video, even though I've verified there's no video left. I've even deleted a lot of audio files, but iTunes still keeps saying my iPod is full. It's as if my deleted files are still taking up physical space even though I've deleted them. Is there an [empty trash] icon or command I just can't find?
    Thanks!

    Thats it! You're a genius!
The KEY point here is this:
Just like in Itunes, the Music Library and Playlist are two different things.
Just because you delete a playlist, doesn't mean you deleted it from your library.
So, all of this time, I was deleting whole playlists or a few songs from the playlist by highlighting and Edit > Delete. So visually, they were gone. However, everything is still in the library. Every song I ever added since I bought the ipod was still there!!
    SIMPLE DIRECTIONS:
    1. Connect Ipod
    2. In Itunes: Device > iPod > Music - you will see the long list. Manually checking and "sync" does not officially remove it from the ipod (at least not in my case). I manually DELETED them by highlighting and Edit > Delete.
I immediately checked my ipod summary and yes, the space was free!!!!!!!!!!

  • Are deleted files still in Time Machine?

I use Time Machine with Time Capsule. If I delete a file on my Macbook, will all traces of it be removed from the TC or are they still archived? If they remain archived, is there a way (through Time Machine) to remove the file completely?

No. that's what a backup is for. so that you can restore deleted files.
    or are they still archived?
archived is the wrong word. they remain in the backups but backups are constantly thinned and old backups will eventually be deleted when the drive gets full. therefore a file deleted from the main drive will not remain on the TM backup forever.
If they remain archived, is there a way (through Time Machine) to remove the file completely? start TM , scroll back in time and select an item you want to delete. click on the "gears" action button in finder's toolbar and select 'delete all backups of...".

  • Deleted file always visible in Finder preview

If I delete a file, the Finder preview still consider the file existing.

Change the Finder view mode; for example, from icon view to list view, or vice versa.

  • Moved files still appear in grid view

Lightroom 2.1 - when I drag images from a subfolder to another folder they do move there, they show in the new location, and the subfolder is now empty, but still appear in the folder one level up from the original subfolder. Opening them from the higher level folder in Loupe 1:1 can cause them to disappear and they are always gone after exiting and restarting Lightroom. Has anybody else experienced this? If so, did you find a solution or is it a real bug?
I am running Windows Vista on a new Dell PC - quad core processor, 4GB RAM.

Typing the filenames in spotlight didn't work for me.
But i was able to sort it out by rebuilding spotlight indexing!
    This is what i've done:
    - I opened up spotlight preferences in system preferences. Then excluded my harddisk from the spotlight search, then closed system preferences (this is needed to make the changes take effect)
    - Then i reopened spotlight preferences and added the harddisk back again (by removing in from the 'exclude-list')
    - After exiting system preferences, spotlight will start rebuilding its search index and the broken aliases were gone!
So it seems to me they were some sort of spotlight leftovers, maybe a bug in spotlight?

  • Why is i Tunes suddenly appearing in Finder under Devices with an Eject icon next to it?

I recently downloaded a new version of I Tunes due to problems with the existing one,now i Tunes appears in Finder under Devices with an Elect icon next to it. Normal?

It is normal. That's the iTunes installer you downloaded. You can press the eject button next to it without any problem because you do not need it. If you want, you can delete it from the folder where it is stored, in most cases, Downloads

  • Deleted music still appearing

I purchased music on my iPhone 6 to later download onto my iPod. My iPod has all of the music on it but now I want to remove it from my iPhone. I plugged it into my computer and I says that there is no music on the phone yet when I got to my purchased music in the iTunes store is shows that the music is still there (image below) Any ideas on how to completely remove all music?

  • N97: Deleted images still appear as thumnails

I deleted some images and videos from my N97 using the Mass Memory connection via my PC.
They are definitely gone from the phone, however they are still showing up in the photo app on the phone. When I click on the thumbnail of a photo, I even get  a detailed view, but after trying to zoom in the photo app crashes. I can't delete the image, the error message says "general system error".
For videos that show up in the photo app, when I select them it says "Unable to connect to server: File not found".
Also, trying to delete the thumbnail results in the same general error.
    Any solutions?
    Thanks,
    MB
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Try this...  Connect your N97 using Mass Storage mode.  If you have Windows, open up the drive associated with the N97 under My Computer.  Before going anywhere, make sure you have your Windows Explorer set to show hidden files as well.  Go to Tools > Folder Options > View.  Somewhere in there you'll see a branch called "Hidden files and folders".  Select "Show hidden files and folders".  Hit Apply and Ok.
Now, you'll see in your mass storage drive a folder called "Private".  Open Private > 101ffc31.  Then delete glxmdstn.  Unplug your phone, and re-open your Photos app.  See if that helps.  (Weird thing is that even if you use Y-browser and have it signed with the full 17-capability certificate, the Y-browser still can't see this Private folder!  So no use trying to find the folder or file in Y-browser.)
Caveat:  There is a slight bug with the N97.  If you have apps installed to the built-in bigger drive, while connected in mass storage mode, all your apps installed there will disappear, as if you lost your apps.  Not to worry, that's because in mass storage mode, the phone OS is prevented from accessing that internal drive.  Once you unplug the USB cable, everything will go back to normal.  This is not a bug, but the bug is this:
If you have your Messaging app set to store messages in this internal drive ("E: mass memory"), then after unplugging the phone, your Messaging app will seem like you have lost all your text messages and mailboxes.  Before you freak out, do not try to rebuild your mailboxes.  The data is still in the internal drive.  Simply go to the Messaging app > Options > Settings > Other and change the "Memory in use" back to "E: Mass memory".  Go back to your Messaging app, and all your SMS and mailboxes and emails will be back there.  The only thing is that if you have the email widget set in your home screen, then you'll have to choose a default Mailbox again.  This is an annoying bug...
If the above solution helps, I wouldn't mind the kudos.  ;-)
